NOT FOR REBROADCAST
In 2023 there currently have been 1165 confirmed tornadoes in the United States (as of Nov 27). That's just under the annual average. For some storm chasers, 2023 was a great year, for others, very challenging and disappointing. Though I documented 20 tornadoes, I personally fall somewhere in between as I missed the majority of the spectacularly photogenic tornado events in Iowa, Nebraska and Colorado. The year was characterized by nontypical chase setups in fringe states like Mississippi, Arkansas and Illinois as well as several hard to forecast long range, upslope set ups in Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming. Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas had lower than average storm events it seems as the days of May Lee Low triple point set-ups rolling across the Plains were almost absent. Remarkable supercell structures were abundant across the entire alley.
REMARKABLE STORM EVENTS FEATURED:
On March 24, Powerful Tornadoes impacted MS, AL and TN at night. Morning light revealed catastrophic EF4 rated damage in Rolling Fork Mississippi
where 17 people lost their lives. Storm Chaser Brandon Clement documented the incredible damage with his drone. See his incredible video on his channel here...
• Rolling Fork Mississip...
3.31 ARKANSAS
Racing toward me at 50 mph was a killer EF3 In Arkansas. After ripping through Little Rock and Jacksonville, this tornado would injure 50 people
and miraculously only one fatality was reported. However, this outbreak was just beginning. another large, intense tornado was about to tear through Wynne Arkansas. In its wake of obliterated homes, the high end EF3 claimed the lives of 4 people.
4.04 ILLINOIS & IOWA
A fast moving tornadic supercell tracked from Missouri into Illinois. Several chasers were hit by a tornado with max EF3 rated damage. Luckily, the chasers would all survive. Because of the the high precipitation storm mode, extremely fast cell motion and difficult chasing terrain, I kept my distance. Over in Iowa, Scott Currens was documenting an incredibly photogenic tornado. See his footage here...
• Awe-Inspiring Rope Tor...
4.19 KANSAS
One storm in eastern Kansas would produce 8 tornadoes after sunset that would traverse mostly open country in the Flint Hills. Elsewhere near OKC, interacting supercells danced in a Fujiwhara effect producing numerous tornadoes.
5.12 NEBRASKA
A long tracking EF2 would track North near Lyons Nebraska where it was wrapped in heavy rain. a couple other EF2s would touch down during this outbreak including a photogenic tornado producer near Greeley and Spaulding Nebraska.
6.15 TEXAS & OKLAHOMA
The event of the day was a deadly EF3 tornado tearing through Perryton Texas, ending the lives of 3 people and injuring 100 others.
6.21 MATADOR TEXAS
On June 21, another extremely dangerous storm was tracking over a region with limited roads. While I was giving the storm a wide birth, Daniel Shaw managed to capture and report the intense rain-wrapped tornado prior to it striking Matador Texas. His reports directly resulted in locals seeking shelter. Unfortunately 4 deaths occurred. You can see Daniel's incredible account of this event here...
• Hidden Monster Tornado...
6.23 WYOMING
On June 23 in I finally scored some pretty tornadoes in Wyoming. The largest of the tornadoes would impact the outskirts of the small town Hawk Springs. No fatalities were reported. Chasing around the scenic bluffs and challenging road network, I managed to eek out a couple more tornadoes as the cyclic supercell moved into Nebraska. A damaging tornado would prompt a tornado emergency in Scott's Bluff and Gering as locals evacuated town. Fortunately no fatalities occurred.

It's good to see Hank transitioning from hair on fire twister chaser to atmospheric sciences professor... He's teaching millions at a time!
Only a bit annoying how he always repeats that tornadoes are very dangerous and can kill you... yeah no shit these freaks of nature can kill you.
💯
Showing is a clear plus
I think that transition happened years ago. In my humble opinion.
He's been a science professor for a very long time
The great thing about Hank's videos is that they aren't just videos, they're part documentary, part adventure. And always terrific production value, from the music to the amazing footage. Thanks for taking us along for the ride, Hank. Have a great vacation!
And they serve as time capsules of what we all heard about but never saw
He’s def one of a kind and produces great videos
Hank's videos are great artworks !
I love it that closed captions transcribes "tornado" as "burrito".
@@williamsstephens I think Hank was able to set it to automatically do that lol
The grasshopper shots killed me 🤣🤣
Same
They're so derpy
My favorite part. Love this dude's sense of humor, & taste in music. And he's a musician?! So glad I found this channel!
"incorrect"
SAME
What I love most about Pecos' videos is that he doesn't just show tornadoes, but also showcases the different animals he finds and shows off the amazing landscapes he drives through.
As well as the other cool non-tornadic weather he experiences
And don’t forget his music!! 😊❤
Hank must have Safelite on speed dial!
And there's always moments that feel really special in a human way too. These are one of the reasons I really love his videos, and they always make me smile. An example in this video is 7:22. It's so rare he is stressed about things that really don't matter. He even has his emotions controlled well in life-threatening scenarios. I think these moments are also poetic in both the content of the message, but also its delivery: "AND! ... they didn't have... any golden grahams... at Love's... ...but they did have... Cinnamon. Toast. Crunch", and "but I think between venting to you guys, and my Cinnamon Toast Crunch... everything's gonna be okay" I LOVE IT. A true artist of the craft
Especially the bullfrog
I can say that without a shadow of a doubt, Hanks annual tornado recap is the highlight of my entire year. Nothing tops the thrill I get every time it pops up.
Hank video bring serotonin to my little weather enthusiast brain

Same, I was just about to comment that
Been watching since 2015, hope he can do this as long as he wants, top tier content for sure!

@@moondart6963 I wonder if the wind-borne ones are newly hatched and don't have the science of evasive maneuvers down pat yet...
You're a videography genius... Your framing, filler content, b-roll, story telling, and soundtracks are all top tier. Some of the best quality videos on TH-cam!
What's b-roll if you don't mind me asking? If you could give me an example from Hank's video, please! Thank you.
@@mommawolf9653 It's secondary video footage not necessarily related to the narration being told at the moment, meant for filler.
@mommawolf9653 an example is when he rescues the green snake from the road. It's amazing how caring Hank is and is an entertaining clip, but isn't directly related to what the video is about. 😊
@@mommawolf9653 Another example unrelated to this channel, sometimes in automotive reviews, there is a follow or chase vehicle with a film crew filming a vehicle's performance as it moves around curves and over hills, and the driver is talking about the vehicle live. But when the camera perspective changes to behind the vehicle, there is no sign of a camera car in front of the vehicle which was just providing the footage given moments ago. This technique is used commonly, and spliced together in editing to give the impression that everything happening on the screen is live, that the camera filming it is invisible, like a set of eyes in the sky.
The soundtracks Hank comes up with for these videos just fit so well, I swear. It's not the first type of music I would imagine when thinking of tornadoes but it's honestly perfect.
And the most beautiful is that Hank composed all the music in his vids by himself. The intro music is called""Glamorous Adagio"".The song between 08:00 and 10:00 is called""Drive under the Moon"".Great music😀
@@coinmastercoinmaster and Drive under the Moon when he Plays the Guitar in back of his Car too
@@obsidianwing Drive under the Moon.Great song.Pecos Hank in a classic oldtimer car together with Bay Berger.Pecos Hank has great skills🙌
He recorded these songs back in 2015. Some of the songs were from his earlier band, the southern backtones, whom he was the guitarist and singer. First album from them was back in ‘06
It really does fit perfectly with all of those long roads and that open American country
I never ever fail to enjoy Hank‘s recaps. They offer a non American a glimpse of Americana, its people, wildlife and incredible weather. Thank you.
Where are you from?
No doubt mayte, no doubt.

The music, the tornados, lightning, storm structure… it’s all amazing. BUT!! The grasshoppers uncontrollably flipping through the air and the “magical sounds” absolutely did it for me 😂😂 another perfect video Hank
They look like they are having so much fun doing that! Like kids jumping on a trampoline who learned how to do flips on it and can't get enough of doing that lol ❤
Hank is my all time Tornado Documentarian on TH-cam. With his homespun accent and phenomenal way of filming, I'm shocked that he hasn't landed a TV gig on Discovery or The Weather Channel by now.
I believe he was consulted for Twisters and probably more idk
The way he ran out of the shot at 9:38 had me cracking up. I love the chemistry between you two!
9:38. The theme to Endless Summer plays. Love this guy’s music and taste in music.
I am in Little Rock, AR…we are still recovering from the March 31 storm. The🌪️ took out one of our Kroger stores, thankfully it reopened a few weeks ago. The news stations did not cover the bulk of the homes that were destroyed. Some homes sustained EF 4 damage. The area’s affected still looks like a war zone. 💔 Thanks for covering our state.

Yesterday in Buenos Aires we experienced a nasty storm (similar to the one in 2012) directo or whatever which was 600km long. I hope Hank you are good and documented it. Unfortunately people died because of fallen trees and a sport club bulding in Bahia Blanca.
Derecho, sorry to hear about deaths
Hank's videos are a treat; his annual storm compilation is an annual event! The photography, editing & informative narrative..& music.. is beautifully timed & captivating!
Hank that was a tremendous lightning bolt outside your window at 2:59. Thanks for adding the little scenes with the big scenes. The big, wide-angle storms are so amazing in your lens. You are the one they should give an IMAX camera to!
For anyone who's creeped out by sirens....let me tell you. It's even more terrifying when you're there. I moved back to TX a few years ago, and 2 weeks after we moved, one went through Ft Worth. I was in my 2nd floor apartment with no basement and weak stairs, with sires going off and the phone popping constant Tornado Emergency alerts, watching the radar with my cats trying not to have flashbacks to when one went through my grandma's backyard in Winston-Salem, NC many, many years ago.
Once you live through one, you never forget that sound.
Thank you for everything you do, Hank. The outtakes always make me laugh, the real, genuine side of Stormchasing these days give people the understanding that it's not as absolutely glamorous as some movies and shows make you think. You genuinely care about people, and love what you do, and every single bit of it shows. Congrats on 1M subs, it's so well deserved!
Was having the worst day until I got the notification Pecos Hank posted, day turned around immediately
A man with passion and compassion, talent and integrity...... We could really use thousands more just like you to teach us so much more than the biology of storms. Wishing you & yours a Merry Christmas ❤ Stay safe and keep doing it the way only Pecos Hank can!! Im going to re-watch some of my favorites 😊
The video I’m most pumped about each year. Hank is the gift that keeps on giving! Bringing us so much knowledge and exposure of tornadoes and the destruction they cause while still being sensitive to victims. I’m sure many are inspired to help out after seeing these 🙌🏼 thank you for putting yourself in harms way to help people ❤
I am in no way a weather or tornado enthusiast, but something about Hank's channel has kept me coming back for a decade.
I have been watching this channel for 8 years now from since i was 11 and you are still one of the best of this platform. I get so excited with every upload and love to see the “tornadoes of” videos. Thanks for all the amazing photography and documenting Hank, and stay safe on the chase!
This is one of the best positive representations of America that I have ever seen. Right now a lot of Americans turn away from their home culture and glorify other cultures. I even did this to the point of moving abroad. This video shows so many aspects of America from the people who are willing to reach out to complete strangers, Cars and the specific type of freedom they provide, consumer culture, and even the amazing biodiversity that is present. I believe that this video is a cultural masterpiece.
Beautiful Hank, admirable work you do
Hank, the grasshopper segment was one of the funniest things I've seen in a long time. Tears in my eyes over that one. Thank you for the laugh
Hank, it looks like Daniel Shaw captured my vehicle on the road side at 15:26. Again, you've made a wonderful video, just my kind of relaxing storytelling with comedy, animals and gorgeous cinematography. Thanks!
Wow. You put a lot of work into this video, and it came out great! Loved seeing your storm chasing adventures all over the world. I'm super excited for the "Tornadoes of Argentina" video.

Those bullfrogs sure where loud
Hank, this video is absolutely fantastic, as always! Such raw beauty within these storms and the way you capture them. Happy trails!
14:18 haha
Magical sounds full the night... 😂
The section at 12:40 had me giggling :')
Some beautiful shots, Hank. Thanks for sharing!
Please understand that the documentation of these storms and the resulting damage is a very important part of how we, as a society, can learn more about these storms and how we can improve how to provide more meaningful and effective relief to the victims of these storms. I completely understand how difficult it is to balance having a deep appreciation for the majestic beauty of tornadic structure and then seeing the utter devastating impact that comes with these storms. Just know, my friend, you are providing a much appreciated and valuable service for the public!! Thank you, my friend!!
Love the videos man! Keep up the good work!!!
Thank you Hank for all you do, one of the most iconic chasers known to man, love ya!
CHRISTMAS CAME EARLY GRAHHHHH
I love your channel Pecos Hank! Keep up the great work! Get ready for the 2024 tornado season! Never stop chasing
Time 3:40 the THUD of the hail bashing in the window... nice bass drum punch. On the other video that catches it, you go to the other camera and shards just go showing past it. The look before and after are so epic. The bull frogs and incorrectly leaping critters ... love your humor! Thank you for the amazing footage!
speaking of photogenic, that dog at 6:00 was quite the looker!
genuinely one of my favourite videos (and channels) on this platform.
Hank, tells a story through his videos, like no other. He shows us the footage, we get to experience the adrenaline rush, we see the heartbreak, as well as the beauty of tornadoes. Keep doing what you are good at Hank. Don't ever let anyone tell you, you can't do that, because that is your gift and your passion. I would feel awful and stifled if someone told me I couldn't storm chase anymore.
OMG I WAS WAITING FOR THISSSS, THANKS PECOS, i was today wondering when a “Tornadoes of 2023” would appear
Also, I love your storm chasing videos, No Screaming, No swearing, Calmness is all, I dont know how you do it!

This man and his storm chasing friends have some of the best tornado footage and music even if there a far away nipple any tornado from any distance is fantastic to me
Your photography and timelapses are brilliant !
Have you ever visited Lake Catatumbo in Venezuela? Its nickname is the “House of Thunder”. I would love to see you make a video about that place where lightning occurs for 140 to 160 nights a year, nine hours per day, and with lightning flashes from 16 to 40 times per minute. I’m sure there would be amazing things to see and study there. Thank you for the many amazing videos you continue to make and share with us!
Man, I love your channel. Great music, beautiful weather, beautiful wildlife, respect for the losses people suffered, and then in the middle, that intermezzo with the grasshoppers. I’m having a hard time staying quiet while the rest of my family is asleep. They remind me of Gonzo from the Muppet Show. 😂😂😂
(HOPE YOU READ THIS) SIR I'm from 🇮🇩 currently there's very big debate among citizens country because JUST 4 day ago one scientist of Indonesian National Research Institute (BRIN) , Mrs Erma Yulihastin announce that One event that take place in Rancaekek Bandung (21 February 2024), are considered As FIRST EVER TORNADO in Indonesia. She said that The size of vortices and large scale destruction are fulfill the threshold of at least EF 0-1 scale. But Indonesian Meterologial Agency (BRIN) said that the event is only.. not more than Tornadic like event (Locally called puting beliung). This is make the citizens and netizens outraged in debate without proper Scientific word.. WDYT SIR???? I Really appreciate if you make the videos about this... Thx u sir ❤❤

Love it! From Australia and I've seen some bad weather but tornadoes. They are a fear and a fascination. Thanks for the vids I've learned alot!
this year i experienced my first tornado warning and let me tell you just being in stuck in the storm with those winds was scary (and this was just an ef2), I cant wrap around my head how badass you have to be to pursue this career and lifestyle. Good luck next year and stay safe. Can’t wait for more travel blogs this upcoming year!!!
Whenever Hank releases a new video, I celebrate in a mighty bout of video-watching. When the new video is the latest "TORNADOES of", I may shed tears and fully embrace Hank's entertaining, thrilling, and informative videos.
Hank is a chill guy! He seems like the guy you could grab a beer with and talk or give your feelings to! Tornadoes looking beautiful lately, Keep up the good work!

My family and I where caught in an EF-4 tornado on April 1st of 2023. We had a power line get knocked down, and we had serve damage done to one of our garages. Thank God that everyone else around us was okay and that that was the only damage that we received. The tornado that hit us was of the four tornados that touched down in Tennessee.

Storm at the 8:08 mark is absolutely incredible. Great video Hank
The grasshoppers got me so bad😂😂😂
I've heard people from western PA to WI call the tornado cyclone feature "a collar" enough times that I noticed it. I grew up near Boston so the whole variety of tornado vocab was new to me in 99 when I went to UW.
People from my area in Tennessee (Memphis) went to Wynne, Arkansas to help clean up and set up shelters. It was devastating. Then we got one near us that destroyed some of my coworkers homes. It is kinda scary living in this area
Great stuff Hank, I can tell you are a weird one, which is why I'm watching, dazzling footage, 4k and education to boot. Absolutely wonderful stuff. Drama is one the most important factors of weather that the main stream science channels just do not capture.. You must be kind of a wild one to do what you do, I'm here for it.
