Not sure how much of that is down to the stock pipes I have on the rs with that horrible exhaust valve bs their mt10 with after market pipes. We have done roll on tests and the rs when in the higher what I call powerband has more torque and pulls away a bit from the mt10s. I had a spd triple R 1050 prior and that had a much "friendlier" low torque feel, not so rough at most revs. The rs likes higher revs and hates pulling from low revs so a downshift of 1 or 2 gears is sometimes required in my experience for it to remain smooth.

I have owned my 21 plated RS from new and haven’t had any issues. I have other bikes and so have still only covered 6,000km, I now have no issues selecting neutral and believe the issue is caused by clutch drag when everything is new. The engine, gearbox and quick shifter are all excellent. Great honest and constructive review 😊👍
I always buy Japanese motorcycles, never owned a European, mainly because I like the reliability of the jap bikes, I'm considering buying this bike, how was Triumph reliability in your opinion? Have you had issues with your bikes? Do you recommend buying the extended warranty?
The suspension stiffness problem is mainly caused by the tires, changing the things change drastically. Try another ones . In my case I have tried two, contisport which heats up immediately and grips at s21 levels, and contirace that for me and with the climate of the Canary Islands it is perfect. Since I bought it I have removed two compression clicks, but with the contirace I only remove one because the tire absorbs a lot together with the suspension, doing a perfect duo job. Before the speed 1200 rs I had the 1050 rs so I know what I'm talking about. A friend has also bought it from me and told me that s21 also works very well and another guy told me that with s22 it also works much better. I already have almost 11000 kms on it and I can say that it is the best motorcycle I have ever had, and among them there has been street r 08', tuono factory V2 07', ktm superduke r 17', Speed 1050 rs and currently I also have a Tiger 1050 08'
I took 4 full turns out of the fork spring rate to get the fork correct for 83kg rider, that isnt tyres, took spring rate to the stopper to get 37mm of sag. Way too hard.

Bren Tune gives low RPM a boost and continues throughout the rev range. A must in my opinion for this particular bike. I disagree with his fueling opinion regarding on/off throttle. Spot on with this guys opinion about the suspension, and everything else for that matter. I had a pro adjust the suspension for street riding, which helped a lot.
I had the same issue selecting track. Go in and reset all modes to default. The problem is some sort of illegal setting for one of map/abs/tc (on mine, map was blank). Once reset, you can select track. Mine never froze. I would take that back to the dealer. The key fob is crap, open it up, and jam the 3 fingered contact downward, it's a fvcking force fit and not soldered!!!
Here’s what’s funny. When you want neutral it’s hard to find but when you’re using the quick shifter it’s super easy to find when you don’t push the lever hard enough passed neutral in either direction.
what a nice review! i was interested on this bike as i am looking for a new one, but there are so many videos out there with describing issues that i am not even going to try to test ride it. Cheers for the comprehensive review on the bike
A lot of the "errors" have been the reviewer not knowing how to use the TFT dash, you have to turn off traction control BEFORE selecting track mode , for instance.....
I bought the 2021 Tuono V4 1100 base model on 5th December & did 3,000 k's b4 xmas, couldn't be happier. Thats till I CRASHED my 2020 KTM 890 Duke R 2 weeks ago, now laid up for the next 6-8 weeks :-( vids on my channel incl riding the previous speed triple.
I've got 300 miles on my 2023 which is virtually the same. Oil leaks, issues with the maintenance reminder being set for the year 2000 and of course the cherry on top- the torque assist clutch which is acting really funky. It slips, the friction zone is really vague- sometimes its right where it should be other times it takes a bit to find it. The day before it went back to the dealer, it was slipping around a corner and then slammed. The RPM kicking up seems a little issue now. I'm looking forward to a Streetfighter V2 soon.
@@onthebackwheel Yep they are doing a warranty on the Engine and they found they had delivered the bike with the clutch misadjusted that caused all the weird behavior.
I have a 23 Speedie in Baja Orange and your review is spot on! I absolutely love the bike, it's a beast! we call it here in NYC as Gentleman's Hooligan machine! :) DJ
Wow you have some issues there... I have had mine since sept last year 3000kms on it now and not had any of the errors or issues you had. Tank lock is simple and works every time on mine. Also interesting range difference, can get a max of around 260kms from a tank of 95 octane.
Your check engine light was lit up because the ECU is really sensitive it's constantly receiving signals from every part of the bile. Its likely that as you were I think you said you were switching through the modes when it lit up, it probably received a signal when you were between modes settings. The check engine light will stay on until you turn the bike on and off a set period of time or you perform the reset code/sequence . If you get the service manual (usually need to search the web to find a free version ) download it and look through there you will not only find the sequence to reset all the error codes & check engine light, but probably answers to all those other little things that annoy you along with all the solutions that will make them a thing of the past. But then you need to go back and edit in an update
I had the bike for 2 weeks so I can't try that sadly. I can only review and give my experiences I had at the time. Happy for long term owners like yourself to give updates on how it has been for sure
Enjoyed your review lot's of detail 👍 I've watched a few reviews on the Speed triple 1200RS and they all seem to complain about dash error issues so probably not just the bike you tested. Also most complain the suspension is to harsh as you have. Would be interested to know if it's just uncomfortable or does the bike get unsettled over bumps and throw shapes.
The barge pole outrigger for the license plate is all down to the EU nanny state. We adults are not allowed to have a plate that’s within the radius of the tyre because we might chop ourselves in 1/2 with it
@@onthebackwheel ya I’d rather not be spinning my tire in heavy rain like I did last year. Lol but I agree only rain mode in rain for me. Sport and track every other time. Glad you still comment on this vid
Can't speak for the Speed Triple, but my street triple was hard to find Neutral, when it was brand new. Now I can go to Neutral every time. Could be from learning the quirks of the bike, or the transmission is properly worn in.
Just the compression and rebound. I checked the sag and front preload and it was at the recommended settings but didn't change it. A viewer said they got their preload all set up and they like it now
@@onthebackwheel Im getting mine in the spring, have testet to diffrent demo bikes, the first one felt fine not to stiff, but the second one felt very stiff, so i think the soloution is to change the sag softer then adjust redamp and compression.
I have 6000 miles on mine. First day I set the sag/ preload front and rear to about 2/10 of maximum. After a few weeks of commuting, I went to the Tail of the Dragon (NC- USA) and actually had to stiffen it up a bit. I weigh about 155 lbs naked and take my weight off the seat over concrete bridges and hard bumps on my 100 mole round trip commute. I know the suspension is never going to be plush, but on any sporting bike it shouldn't be. This is my 3rd Triumph, second Speed Triple and by far the best bike I ever owned out of the all my bikes. It does have some quirky dash issues, but I have mostly gotten used to it now, no major issues with it for me so far. Finding neutral was tough at first, but after a few thousand miles and a slight adjustment to the shifter lever (I adjusted it down a bit lower.) I have had mostly no issues finding neutral anymore. Thanks for the video. Stay safe. Keep riding and making videos.
Just a bit more info, I used to work at a Triumph dealership and we found that most bikes come in "set up" for a 180-200 lb rider. Also that most riders of that weight would still want a bit softer setting. Since I dialed mine back up a touch in NC, I have left it and it feels pretty good. I wondered if it took a while to "break in" the suspension.
My first generation Street Triple R Matte Orange problem is that it nearly always goes to fast. Maybe its the colour !?. And then its the problem with down throtteling with a Leo Vince system, POP POP BOM BOM RRRRRRR. 😄
Great review. I would only say: MT10sp is a real rival to Speed. Tuono and street fighter V4- 4to5 K more expensive. R1000S -throttle is absolutely empty , Super Duke- great beast but vibrations are anonymous but color for everyday use - just horrible, Kawa? looks heavy with cheap plastic. And that pretty much it.
I have this exact bike and love it. I've found, with the display issue not always behaving on startup can be related to the key fob. Keep the battery in the fob fresh, and sometimes if I turn the fob off and on (the Triumph logo is a button) the bike wakes right up. It's a little odd.
Wow how dare triumph not engineer the suspension just for you! I suppose these manufacturers should do every bike as a custom setup for each person. But they would charge an extra 3k+. Where a suspension tuner would be under a 1k. 🤷♂️
I had one of the 1st 1200RS in Qld (notice that's where you are) Not one issue, no electrics fault at all. I also replaced the battery in the fob, was given connection issues now and then. After replacing the battery, no more problems. Have the Leiker exhaust and did away with the butterfly valve. (oh repainted it two weeks after it) Here's a video done a while ago th-cam.com/video/kzUd3eNMZkw/w-d-xo.html Also regarding the suspension, yep it's hard. I tried the settings mentioned in (I think Ride magazine) Helps, but still would prefer it to be softer. Forks - Compression default 15 clicks from fully in - Rebound default 15 clicks from fully in.: --- Compression all the way out >22 clicks from fully in (Minimum for Compression) --- Rebound 22 clicks out Rear Shock - Compression default 20 clicks from fully in -Rebound default 16 from fully in --- Compression all the way out >22 clicks from fully in --- Rebound 14 clicks from fully in (Added two clicks)
@@onthebackwheel Realised I posted as my other account, ooops... The exhaust or bike? I still have both, bought another end can from Leiker so now I can swap between the two. Agree about the tank, my previous bike was a Super Duke R and got more out of the tank, close to 250kms... Neutral was difficult at first, but now although not the easiest, not too difficult. I also had the bike re-mapped by Pro-Cycle Dyno
In Europe Aprilia doesn't sell much because its very unreliable and ktm is the worst.. This triumph after youbshort out the first batch baby issues it's ok! Still not unreliable but not as bad as the ones you mentioned... The MT10 is a good bike for sure and you can't go wrong... Triumph is also classy bikes. The quality shows on the bikes in all the metals, you can't compared with the plastic ktms and the Aprilia...
Yup suspension way too hard, I took 4 full turns out of the fork spring rate to get the fork sag correct. Neutral, absolutely difficult, I turn the tip of of my foot in so my boot is on a noticeable angle then I can find Neutral without going past it. Its also far easier 2nd down to Neutral. Track mode, stop, Neutral, select track then push and hold the x select stick, then wait a few seconds without touching throttle. I do it everyday, issue free.
Yeah that suspension is STIFF. Thing is, still a mean bike! Turns out the track mode issue needed a fix at the dealer. Another person had a similar issue and did some crazy work around otherwise it'd just lock up, bizarre.
I I agree Triumph needs to step it up on their color schemes. I wish I could turn wheelie control off without turning traction off. I think triumph blew it with that
Triumph loves to lock you out of certain things only the dealer has the tools for like reseting the service interval and when they do service the bike and get it back no cruise Triumph wants their bikes looked at by the dealer you can turn the fob off to save battery
I find the supernakeds of today to be ironic. It's almost as if they're no longer designed for street riding and way over powered. At this point, just get a proper superbike and be done with it. I'm looking forward to the new 990 Duke. This makes sense to me. And it may have ridden like a bulldog, but I miss my 2009 Speed Triple.
The electronics on vehicles have gone too far. We ride motorcycles, which inconvenience us, we get rained on, ride in hot / cold weather, most of us can tolerate putting a key in a lock. I don't want my bike disabled because a gremlin jumped in the circuitry, or I forgot a fucking password.
I love the fob. No more keys attached to keyring scratching the bike. Have a speed triple r with key and Nice to be able to open fuel tank now without a key. Just ensure you turn off the fob when you are near the bike so no one can steal it. Same in the house turn off the fob to avoid anyone scanning the fob
Like cars, too much unreliable tech. Annoying. Not necessary. But that seems to be what people want, spending what little time away from work they have to address electronic glitches.
All that race garbage is a waste on a street bike. Having great yank of the brakes is not a good thing either. When these race brakes are operated at race speeds, they work very linearly. It's what they're designed to do. They aren't designed throw you over the handlebars every time you approach a light that's turning red. Good bikes are designed to be varied smoothly and linearly in the range that they're to be operated. Sport mode is even worse. They take what could be a nicely fueled throttle map and turn it into a light switch. Fortunately, manufacturers can make a fortune selling stupid shit to the clueless public.
No fluff, no bullshit intros, just straight to the point, clear and concise information. New sub earned from Singapore.

Rather the KLR, got to work harder to make it perform. Was using my sons street triple until he sold it last week, magic bike though.
Now this is good info, cheers mate
Here’s what’s funny. When you want neutral it’s hard to find but when you’re using the quick shifter it’s super easy to find when you don’t push the lever hard enough passed neutral in either direction.
That's definitely not ideal
what a nice review! i was interested on this bike as i am looking for a new one, but there are so many videos out there with describing issues that i am not even going to try to test ride it. Cheers for the comprehensive review on the bike
No worries mate. There are so many good super naked bikes too
true that @@onthebackwheel
A lot of the "errors" have been the reviewer not knowing how to use the TFT dash, you have to turn off traction control BEFORE selecting track mode , for instance.....
I bought the 2021 Tuono V4 1100 base model on 5th December & did 3,000 k's b4 xmas, couldn't be happier. Thats till I CRASHED my 2020 KTM 890 Duke R 2 weeks ago, now laid up for the next 6-8 weeks :-( vids on my channel incl riding the previous speed triple.
Mate you need to get off ktms, you keep crashing them!
@@onthebackwheel Lol yeah I know hopefully not the Aprilia
I've got 300 miles on my 2023 which is virtually the same. Oil leaks, issues with the maintenance reminder being set for the year 2000 and of course the cherry on top- the torque assist clutch which is acting really funky. It slips, the friction zone is really vague- sometimes its right where it should be other times it takes a bit to find it. The day before it went back to the dealer, it was slipping around a corner and then slammed. The RPM kicking up seems a little issue now. I'm looking forward to a Streetfighter V2 soon.
Yikes, sounds like a lemon mate
@@onthebackwheel Yep they are doing a warranty on the Engine and they found they had delivered the bike with the clutch misadjusted that caused all the weird behavior.
One of the best reviews of this bike I've seen. Mine is coming next week.
What year is yours?
Thanks! This was a 2021 build, same as 2022
I have a 23 Speedie in Baja Orange and your review is spot on! I absolutely love the bike, it's a beast! we call it here in NYC as Gentleman's Hooligan machine! :) DJ
The gentleman's hooligan, great name 😂
Wow you have some issues there... I have had mine since sept last year 3000kms on it now and not had any of the errors or issues you had. Tank lock is simple and works every time on mine. Also interesting range difference, can get a max of around 260kms from a tank of 95 octane.
Good to hear mate. Seems very un Triumph (well, modern Triumph) to have issues. Seems a mixed bag ATM, hopefully just teething issues
A lot of people complained it has no low end power my question is do you think a tune will help that because I like low-end torque.
It would help for sure. How much? Hard to say
Great review...
Any heat issues? How does the heat compare to riding a Ducati?
No heat issues and compared to a Ducati it will feel like air-conditioning
Enjoyed your review lot's of detail 👍
I've watched a few reviews on the Speed triple 1200RS and they all seem to complain about dash error issues so probably not just the bike you tested.
Also most complain the suspension is to harsh as you have.
Would be interested to know if it's just uncomfortable or does the bike get unsettled over bumps and throw shapes.
Yeah it's definitely too firm. It was unsettled over bumps, then I tweaked it and was good at higher speeds. The quality is certainly there
Suspension is great if you get it set up for you, quality unit
Track mode gets locked before first service. I don’t think they unlocked it
Nah, it was just a pain in the ass
Sounds a bit like the VTR firestorm/superhawk, doesn't like anything under 3k rpm but from there upwards it is very linear.
Always liked the vtr, they sound fantastic
You're lucky those electronic issues where not related to throttle response 😁
I know im late to this but track mode cant be selected until you turn off traction control.
Good to know mate
The barge pole outrigger for the license plate is all down to the EU nanny state. We adults are not allowed to have a plate that’s within the radius of the tyre because we might chop ourselves in 1/2 with it
Barge pole outrigger, that's a good one
I am trying to decide between Speed Triple 1200RS and the BMW S1000R M package.
That's a tough one. The s1000 is a better road bike and that new triple is a peach. Depends what kind of riding you're going to be doing
@@onthebackwheel 80% Work commute, 20% Weekend winding road group riding.
@@mikev6046 my initial thoughts are BMW, but you've got some test rides to go on. Or just get a Tuono 😄
MT10 SP mate 👌👍
Same here
For finding neutral dropping in from second gear is infinitely easier than first
Same, this bike was a pain either way sadly
The orange is nice
We’ll rain mode also reduces the HP to 88 so ya it does dumb it down so you don’t wreck it
Boring!
@@onthebackwheel ya I’d rather not be spinning my tire in heavy rain like I did last year. Lol but I agree only rain mode in rain for me. Sport and track every other time. Glad you still comment on this vid
@@kodiakrl1094 I'll accept it being used in slippery conditions haha. I try to keep up with comments when I can
YES
Can't speak for the Speed Triple, but my street triple was hard to find Neutral, when it was brand new. Now I can go to Neutral every time. Could be from learning the quirks of the bike, or the transmission is properly worn in.
I honestly think it's just tricky to find neutral on the new speed triple
Did you set the Sag or just changed damping?
Just the compression and rebound. I checked the sag and front preload and it was at the recommended settings but didn't change it. A viewer said they got their preload all set up and they like it now
@@onthebackwheel Im getting mine in the spring, have testet to diffrent demo bikes, the first one felt fine not to stiff, but the second one felt very stiff, so i think the soloution is to change the sag softer then adjust redamp and compression.
@@mholsen80 no doubt it will help. I got it reasonably close with some adjustments just to the clickers. Everything else is pretty, bloody good
I have 6000 miles on mine.
Does they have steering stabilizer?
It's been a while and I can't remember TBH, sorry!
My first generation Street Triple R Matte Orange problem is that it nearly always goes to fast. Maybe its the colour !?. And then its the problem with down throtteling with a Leo Vince system, POP POP BOM BOM RRRRRRR. 😄
Those triples do sound good with a pipe
I'm a little down on the styling, but that might be down to the lack of bright colours that Speed Triples have traditionally offered.
Bring back Nuclear Red and Roulette Green!!
@@philliprobertlawman2232 absolutely.
Black and grey really aren't cutting it.
@@philliprobertlawman2232 You mean pink? (I owned one and loved the color).
@@1MrBryn nothing but compliments on my flat grey. It is not a kid's bike.
Yeah, all those colours in MotoGP are for the kids.
Now I'm a little nervous about getting one! What year is yours? My concern is that the dealership is almost 4 hours away.
Great Vid by the way...😀
Thanks mate. This was a 2021 model. Would happily own a Triumph, they are known to be solid
Cheers. Tricky thing is, the base Tuono is the same price and I'd have one over the RS
I have this exact bike and love it. I've found, with the display issue not always behaving on startup can be related to the key fob. Keep the battery in the fob fresh, and sometimes if I turn the fob off and on (the Triumph logo is a button) the bike wakes right up. It's a little odd.
Yeah right. Mean bike
I just want to know. How many speed tickets do you have?
Not too many thankfully! I'm pretty good bar the odd squirt in quiet areas
The Track mode, is the bike still below 1000km?
No, over 3000km. I asked the dealer when I took it back and they had no idea. Another viewer had the same problem and was able to fix it
Never had an issue finding neutral. Not on 3 different 1200 RS I have ridden. And you misunderstood suspension settings.
Neutral could just have been mine, can only talk about the one I've got. No mistaking the suspension, it's too hard
Wow how dare triumph not engineer the suspension just for you!
I suppose these manufacturers should do every bike as a custom setup for each person.
But they would charge an extra 3k+.
Where a suspension tuner would be under a 1k. 🤷♂️
Nah this is too stiff and harsh for nearly everyone unless you are on the track all the time or a heavy guy
I had one of the 1st 1200RS in Qld (notice that's where you are)
Not one issue, no electrics fault at all. I also replaced the battery in the fob, was given connection issues now and then. After replacing the battery, no more problems.
Have the Leiker exhaust and did away with the butterfly valve. (oh repainted it two weeks after it)
Here's a video done a while ago
th-cam.com/video/kzUd3eNMZkw/w-d-xo.html
Also regarding the suspension, yep it's hard. I tried the settings mentioned in (I think Ride magazine)
Helps, but still would prefer it to be softer.
Forks - Compression default 15 clicks from fully in
- Rebound default 15 clicks from fully in.:
--- Compression all the way out >22 clicks from fully in (Minimum for Compression)
--- Rebound 22 clicks out

-Rebound default 16 from fully in
--- Compression all the way out >22 clicks from fully in
--- Rebound 14 clicks from fully in (Added two clicks)
That's good mate, nice looking exhaust too. Do you still have it
@@onthebackwheel Realised I posted as my other account, ooops...
@@striff nice mate. That motor would be even sweeter with a tune
Nah this bike is perfect ❤
There’s a new gear link free upgrade in gearbox for easier neutral as of 2023
Thanks mate good to hear, it was a real pain in the ass
Not a trend I'm liking
In that whole time you didn't start it once ?
Hi, what do you mean exactly?
get a Bt Moto tune ;) goes from like 140 to 170 hp at the wheel and unlocks the euro 5 nannies of doom.
That sounds bloody fantastic
I find the supernakeds of today to be ironic. It's almost as if they're no longer designed for street riding and way over powered. At this point, just get a proper superbike and be done with it. I'm looking forward to the new 990 Duke. This makes sense to me. And it may have ridden like a bulldog, but I miss my 2009 Speed Triple.
990 is a great size for the street, should be a hoot
It has an angry wasp look, plus the "dicky" stinger that happened to snatch up a license plate...
😂 it does a bit!
NOBODY leaved the "stinger" on...now or ever in the past.
I think uou wanna say 18.000 dollars. Not 28
I wish, it is 28+
@onthebackwheel you're Australian, I see..
I couldn't stand keyless fobs. It's just a solution to a problem that never existed.
I'm not sold on them that's for sure
Once you've had it you miss it on other bikes... rode my wife's S1000R yesterday and kept forgetting to put the key in after each stop.
No issues with my fob on the SDR.........yet 🤣
I love the fob. No more keys attached to keyring scratching the bike. Have a speed triple r with key and Nice to be able to open fuel tank now without a key. Just ensure you turn off the fob when you are near the bike so no one can steal it. Same in the house turn off the fob to avoid anyone scanning the fob
probably best to store a fob battery on the bike somewhere?
Like cars, too much unreliable tech. Annoying. Not necessary. But that seems to be what people want, spending what little time away from work they have to address electronic glitches.
All the electronic fuckery makes me want to stay away from these. I absolutely LOVE my Roulette Green 955i.
They are a pain in the ass. Bloody nice bike when everything is working though
