Why do we fight mid at level 1 and how do we abuse it?

  • Fighting Mid is something we all do without thinking these days so why do we fight mid?
Pros fight mid because they want to stay groupped and be in the middle of the map to prevent enemies from cheesing towers or to prevent enemies from hiding and trying to flank. Groupping also allows kills during enemy rotations.
Otherwise there are 3 things you should look for in fighting at level one.
1: Do you have quests with high value to complete early. Some quests can get a lot of stacks mid and those stacks can be the difference of the lane.
2: Does your team have an early combo like a hook that can lead to an early kill?
3: Does your team have a weak level one with maybe a varian? Or a strong level one with a tracer?
Taking those 3 things into consideration the value of simply soaking lanes is worth more than a couple kills. So If the enemies have more quests, more kill potential and/or a stronger level 1 you may just want to soak instead of fighting mid.
Also I talk a bit about The Art of War and Social Cognitive Theory.

Early game tips, first always say hi to your team to break the ice of silence and wake them up from their "routine game start" mindset, they could have had a bad loss in their last game and still be annoyed about it. Next tell, your team if you have go ta plan or ask if they have a plan even if you are just with randoms like "I'll go for this camp *ping camp* before obj event happens, need one to help out." This way you are not ordering them what to do so you are not bossing them and maybe hurting their ego, just tell them what to expect. If it is QM it is probably even more important for example "I'll take bot will Murky take top?" or "Watch out guys their team is really dive heavy play safe!" or "Watch out, this is a premade team so don't charge int them." Just so that their thinking does not get locked down into fighting with the other team for too long. We all know this weird feeling when we see the enemy suddenly dropping on health and the taste for blood fills our minds and we want that kill no matter what and even after we got the kill or the enemy got away we still get stuck in this bloodlusted mindset and loosing our grip on the macro game for a long time. I mean I know it is different for everyone but I can personally say I often fell into this trap but just calling out will help us stay on the top of things.
Let us face it, most of us fight at level one in the midlane for the fun of it, I know I am. xD

    1. I like really how you speak. I am germany and its not always easy if people starts talking with "gamer language" + english. You really explain it in a way I really can understand. Thanks!
    2. The way and examples you use is also good. Not to much of details or things around which could confuse. In other words, beginner have the chance to get what you want.
and finally: 3. The questions you set at every point. It seems like a small thing but helps to request myself. The answer can be so easy.

I like your hide in the bush strat and that sounds strong. I have been doing something similar with Sonya. I'll clear the wave as fast as possible and then move on the enemy side and where I expect the rotation to come from. Yes I'm just expecting 1 person to be walking up. I don't hide and try to spear them. I really just want to slow them down to allow my wave to crash into the wall. This seems to work every single game and it's a nice little +1 wave to start the match. I can even clear the mid wave before moving up. People are that slow to rotate.

Even when i got Bot from the beginning and type in Chat "Dont go Mid, so we dont give Azmo and Kael Stacks" and pinging Retreat after they still go mid as 4.
It ends with 2 Kills for the other Team and some nice Stacks for Azmo and Kael.
Its super fun to start with lvl1 against lvl2 in the solo lane.

I realy like your approach of "One little Thing for each Video".
The little things are so important and will help you climb in Ranks or getting better overall.
I was stuck in high Plat for 3 Seasons and my biggest Problems were.
Tunnelvision in Teamfights (i mostly play Tanks but i just went chasing someone insted of peeling).
Not using the Minimap (i got caught so often by Rotatios).
Playing too many different Heroes (i even picked someone like Tyrael when someone asked in Draft, even if i havent played him for Month).
So i fixed all 3 Problems one after another, by train myself to use the Minmap every 20 Seconds in 10 Matches straight and repeat that the next Day.
Now it feels normal to me and i facepalm everytime when someone get caught by an super obvious rotation (like me half a Year ago^^).
I focused on 3 Main Tanks, which improved my Winrate on them and of course my Winrate overall.
And by playing the Shit out of the ARAM Brawls i got much better in Teamfights and lost the Habbit to Tunnelvision.
These "small" things helped me to climb from Plat1 to Master after 2 Seasons.

Honestly, in situations like that, where 4 teammates make a decision different from your own, whether it be right/wrong, I've learned that just doing what your team wants to do can make a bad outcome less severe, or somehow turn into a favorable one.

    • @christianrasmussen528

Yeah, it really feels counterintuitive, but often it really is better to have 5 people doing it wrong than 4 people doing it wrong and 1 doing it right, because at least it'll mean you're able to help your team while they're doing silly stuff (and then you can always point it out afterwards if you think they'll listen ;)

I think a lot of people do it because they simply enjoy playing the game against other players. A teamfight is always fun, even at lvl 1. So if you are not one of those people that want to be the very best, but simply enjoy the game, imo it's alright to fight at lvl 1 for one minion wave and then split up.
Not everyone wants to play on a high level, as it takes a lot more concentration and can be really stressful. Anyone who wants to relax simply enjoys playing the game while trying to win without trying to play at his best. So if you are talking about hero league, then the question is a good one, but for quickmatch or unranked, I prefer to let people play whatever they want if they do it with a positive thought in mind.

  • @thefigura

There is a very important reason pros fight in the middle that was not covered by the video. I would say it is more important the other reason provide, although it is map dependant (and not a factor on this particular map). Pros Fight middle to be ahead in clearing waves on maps where you rotate with a 4 man group to clear waves (tomb of the spider queen is a good example). You fight middle to push the enemy team back to be able to clear the mid lane minions before your enemy so that you are ahead in the rotation. That means you will always be ahead on exp which means you have the advantage during objectives.

Another great video! I'd like to know when you should fast clear a lane vs hiding in a bush to let the minions kill each other to prevent the enemy from getting soak. Also, what people mean by "freezing a lane" and when doing that is useful.

    • @NotParadox
      @NotParadox  6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Fast clear vs hiding is situational. How fast can the enemies rotate? Have they notices your team is missing people?
I find if the enemies don't know you are not there, meaning 5 are still trying to fight, I hide. If my team is getting kills I know the enemies are going to rotate so I hard push so they lose. An easier way to see is if there is a fight going mid, you push hard, if it's just poking back and forth, hide.
Freezing the lane means to let the enemy wave not reach your tower when pushing and instead tank it so it doesn't die to towers. Then when your wave reaches the frozen wave it will have to fight those then the new enemy wave keeping the entire wave on your side. This is beneficial for scary heroes like Garrosh who wants the enemies to get closer so you can throw. Freezing lane can zone the enemies out of experience pretty well with the right people.

    • @Jonas_Fox
      @Jonas_Fox 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Freezing means getting your minions to pile up at one point in the battlefield. You can accomplish this by either killing the front three minions or by killing the back four minions. If you want to push, take out the back four only.

Hello there. I'm an offlaner main and when I play on bigger maps with comms I like splitting to a side lane at the start, wait for the enemy to show mid, clear the lane a.s.a.p. and then try to slow the rotation of the opposing offlaner. On Cursed you can do it with both side lanes, because they are equally far. Usually it works like a charm.
Thanks for you videos, btw, you have a great growing channel both for beginners and more experienced players!

On alot of maps like dragonshire or tomb, teams will make a 4 man that rotates through two lanes. Teams often fight as 5 so that they have the highest chance of clearing their minions faster, so that they can rotate faster. the team that is ahead on rotations controls the bushes/ mid area, so can clear more efficiently, and can use this pressure to get siege dmg or create space to cap mercs.

There's a story about a great Chinese general who was legendary for setting up traps for his enemy. One day he was completely cornered, completely outnumbered and surrounded inside a fort. So he went up to the wall and started playing his mandolin on top of the tower as the enemy army advanced. The enemy, seeing him alone and seemingly vulnerable, turned around and fled. The legendary general escaped certain defeat by appearing weak, tricking his enemy into thinking he is strong, when actually he is weak. Woah.

You do not truly brawl for the lvl 1 fight to get a kill UNLESS you have an early game comp or a pick off comp.
The only 3 reasons why you should group for lvl 1 fight is rotationnal advantage, quest progression and the fact that as 5 you are a lot safer.
Rotationnal advantage is particularly relevant on rotation maps where you roam as 4. Clearing the first wave faster than your opponent is incredibly significant as it will allow you to clear the second wave faster and come back to mid with a rotation advantage : you are already set in place when the ennemy comes back and can get either continue to stay ahead in rotation or get free poke on ennemy if they come slightly staggered. A rotation advantage translates in either merc camp control or ganking power which is very powerful.
On map where you don't rotate as 4 because lanes are far apart, there is still absolutely no reason not to group up as your grouped up team will clear the first wave fast enough for your solo laners to catch back onto their lanes without losing a single minion worth of xp (even if the ennemy solo laners were in their lanes first, the fact that they wavecleared it will actually give you an edge in that solo lane as their minion wave will move forward making it so that your next minion wave will stop attacking theirs. Shifting the minion contact point towards your side of the lane).
Now, it might happen that your team's early game is weaker than the ennemy or that they have a lot more waveclear than you. In that case, your solo laner should take position early on in their respective lane and NOT SHOW nor actively clear the lane (for the reason explained in the previous point). Your mid lane should play safe and catch up on soak safely as minion come to your towers ; if you have quest talents you will still be able to get a few quest stacks as the ennemy will be grouped up.
TLDR: your video has basicly has all this point explained but I feel like you take too much time explaining it in details regarding those given comps.

Personally, if I ever feel like I'm going to be mechanically better than the enemy team I always go mid. Often I get picks. If I'm a solo laner that I don't really feel has kill potential I'm more likely to just go to my lane and hide in the bush. Sometimes I'll go for vision aggressively if I know my team only wins on pure kills (IE, I have Nova/Tracer/Valeera in a QM or something).

Did an Ctrl+F on Chromie with no results so here goes,
If the enemy have a Chromie, never go mid. You WILL get burned down faster than they will regardless of CC as mentioned in the video. You will also give her ample opportunity to do her quest/trait.
So if there's a Chromie, start off by going lanes and force the travel time upon their team.

I love playing Zul and always go Bot or top right away, as soaking always seems more important. It never made sense why everyone went mid. I always guessed it was to try to get early picks. But xp from creeps is more important imo

I used to fight midlane to see how act my teammates in teamfights. Later on i knew who to focus and whether i can leave my team 4 vs 5 to soak.
But it was on bronze, now I just go mid, clear wave and then I go soak other lane

I go mid because I'm impatient and laning is boring and that's why I don't play LoL. Also because it's scary being on your own, and I usually play support anyways so I'm more effective there, especially on aoe healers like Brightwing or Lucio. (Although burst heals tend to be nice there too because somebody usually gets focused.)

Whenever i play sylvanas, i skip the mid fight and zerg down a tower. usually get to do 80% tower damage to killing one and do upward to 50% on the second tower before the enemy even goes bot.

I've played the game for almost two years now but I've never actually known why or why not to go mid. Most of the time I solo lane depending entirely on my pick, or I just auto default to mid when I have a decent level 1 like Alarak just because I know there's gonna be an early fight and I want in on it, simply for the sake of having fun.
Never realized the early game is this important tho.
Also, the only problem with 11:20 is that 3 out of 5 people have the mindset of "this guy is telling me what to do but he's not my boss so I won't listen to him", and they'll completely ignore you. At least that's my experience with MOBAs.

Hey man - new 2 ur channel, and I already love it! U speak shortly about dooing a list of "Earlygame vs lategame" heroes - And I think it would be a great idea! Everybody is dooing the "new patch" and the common "tier list" for overall strenghts of the heroes, but no1 seems to be dooing the Early/lategame thingy...-U might be the first one on this one?
    Cheers!

Thank you. Great video. I would it be interested what you have to say to the topping of when to stop laining. I am under the impression that the pros almost always come to a point were the laining part of the came is just something you do quickly in between when you are near by anyway

  • @WaitingForStorm
    @WaitingForStorm 5 ปีที่แล้ว

even if your team all went mid lane at the start only half of the games you played, you're most likely to learn to go mid lane simply because you play this game to fight (also because going mid lane for no reason doesn't seem to give you any noticeable disadvantage)

    Hey,
that's yet another very good guide of yours. I'm a high master / low grand master player myself, so I know a thing or two and I watch guides for entertainment mostly. And when I'm watching most of the guides I can't help but making facepalm and I guess every plat+ player does that. They are super inaccurate and illogical. For example a statistical guide author would mention your quests but wouldn't say that the enemy team also has quests and its down to who has more and more important ones.
Your guides are nothing like that. A sight for a sore eyes (and sound for a sore ears).

Do you believe in the theory that doing the mid brawl is the wrong choice for at least one team? Assuming quest stacking isn't a priority. One team should have a weaker early game or a weaker team fight and since there's really no reason to fight since there is no objective yet, the 5 man brawl seems pointless.

    • @sarzootashoota351

There is always one team that has an advantage. So yes, if you have an aba or they have a bunch of quests they need to hit you, just avoid them. I recently beat a Hanzo when I was playing Hanzo because he went mid and got three hits of his Q Quest on everyone else and he never ever hit me even once with his q because I just avoided him all game. Play smart.

Thank you for your insight. I wish more people would be aware that soaking lane is much more important than taking useless fights. Just 2 days ago it happend that we lost the first objektive on battlefield of eternity. Boss went bottom lane. I as a spec stayed top for 2 reasons. First to soak XP (we where a level behind) and second to counter their zagara pushing top as well.
I got flamed IMMIDIATLY that i´m a retarded idiot for not abandoning top and helping defend bottom

Great video. Only part I felt was missing is when a new player picks a seige character and only Lanes thinking that is all they are for. It would be nice for them to show up during such fights. I would rather have them in the middle fight then to solo a Lane to inevitably die when the enemy team rotates.
