I just did the clutch on my '02 tdi jetta with 275k. A metal retainer clip came off the throw out bearing and beat the hell out of the clutch and bell housing. Also, with the bearing being cockeyed it smoked the clutch disk, and wallored out the center of the flywheel REAL bad. The flywheel went off balance so bad it was chewing into the starter housing, and of course the dual mass flywheel got twisted so I had to cut off that center to get the bolts out. I did it all on my back in my driveway. It fought me every step of the way. Thank you for this great video. My tdi would probably still be in pieces if it wasn't for you.
@@TDISwaps definitely. Along those lines, I don't imagine many home mechanics have the triple star M bits needed for pulling the flywheel. I think the flywheel bolts are M12 size? Also, dropping out the transmission was the only way to go for me and the CV shaft bolts are M8 if you do it that way, instead of pulling the center nut/bolt from the hub. You are right, the transmission isn't too heavy. I dropped it onto my chest to get it out and back in.
Nice! Ya you do need a few special tools for sure. And ya I just shipped out a whole 5 speed swap kit, tranny axles and all and it was right at 200lbs in a 35 lb crate!
I know this is an older thread, but Im trying to figure out how to do this on the ground now for my ‘10 TDI. Any suggestions? I’m worried about clearance to get transmission out from under the car while it’s on jack stands. Can’t justify a 2 post or scissor lift at the moment.
@Aaron well, I did it with a couple of jack stands. It was certainly tight, and you won't have room for a creeper, but it's doable. The worst part in fenageling the transmission out of the engine bay to get it clear of the car.
Super helpful video! straight to the point. The only thing I'll add is if you're doing this by yourself and on the ground, have some light-duty ratchet straps handy( at least 3). I was able to hook them into some of the transmission bolt holes to help pull the transmission back into place while reinstalling. This will be a day saver if you don't have anyone around to help push/pull the trans back into place with you.
@16:10 you mention "..shaking so much." Mine is a '08 Jetta L4, and shook badly at idle too. After switching the engine strut mount bushings to urethane, it became barely noticeable. Highway speeds are like riding on air. Hope that helps.
Awesome... What Solid Flywheel are you using...from which cars...? Are you using original TDi Pressure Plate and Clutch Plate (without cushion springs)?
I don't remember which clutch that one was, but I now recommend the vr6 upgrade with weighed flywheel for this setup, comes with everything you need. www.idparts.com/sachs-g60vr6-clutch-flywheel-kit-a4a5-038198132h-p-764.html
great video! learned a ton before tasking this myself. Completely random question what is that filter cap next to the engine oil pan? noticed this on my touareg too, is it a replaceable filter?
dude this is a pretty good explanation! planning on putting a south bend stage 2 endurance in my 2005 mk4 bew. besides the new flywheel, flywheel bolts, clutch plate, pressure plate, throw out bearing, and assembly grease, what else do i need? i’m sure the kit covers all of that already. anything else i should do while i’m in there?
Hello how are you very good videos. These are the ones that feed the mind. I have a question I am doing the same thing but still 2.0t mk5. Could you explain to me how you did it to be able to start the car and decrease the speed, please, by holding the automatic transmission harness.please i need help thank you very much
@@TDISwaps yes . I'm just waiting for the ecu. manual with immobilizer removed. I removed the automatic one and I'm waiting for the manual one. Do you have an email or something we can communicate with? or social page
That's nice work friend. I have 2006 skoda Octavia 1.9 tdi diesel alh 5 speed manual clocked 100k on odo. I am planning to get done timing belt and clutch work. Can you please tell me which timing belt kit is good? INA or Continental? And there is little grinding noise from gearbox side in the morning not continuous. Also not typical loud rattle. When I press clutch noise goes, when I release clutch ,noise comes. Otherwise, clutch is normal soft, gear engagement normal, pickup normal. What should I do? Should I replace clutch plt pressure plt release bearing with flywheel? Should I convert DMF to SMF? Is it safe for the gear and crankshaft in longterm? Luk or sachs? Thanks brother.
I've had good luck with both of those timing kits, and the rattling is most likely the dual mass flywheel, the g60 vr6 single mass flywheel and clutch upgrade is a good choice.
Having a problem getting my trans back in can’t get the bellhousing bolts to line up. Partly because of the metal gasket between the engine and trans. It also has big gaps at the top of the bottom is lined up, and big gaps at the bottom if the top is lined up. Any ideas?
It's definitely a tight squeeze, did you for sure get the centering plug in to line up the clutch disc when bolting that all together? Also it helps to have it in gear and turn the axle or drive lines a little bit to help the splines fall into place

just finished watching, and i noticed we have the same squealing noise under boost😭👍 i’m pretty sure it’s the egr pipe being loose, or cracked. i just deleted my egr and the block off plate i made might not be on all the way. any thoughts as to what it could be?
My squealing is my intake, the cone filter I got makes alot of noise spooling, but any other squeals could be boost leaks, check connections on all the boost pipes

What wheels are those? I like them and I want to go to 17" wheels for a brake upgrade and those look like 17" or 18" wheels.
I believe they are an MB wheel from discount tire direct. They are for like a Tiguan suv though that's what makes them so wide 18x9s though
great video! learned a ton before tasking this myself. Completely random question what is that filter cap next to the engine oil pan? noticed this on my touareg too, is it a replaceable filter?
That is the oil cooler, it has a big oring seal on either side and that cap is a big bolt that holds it to the bottom of the oil filter housing

@TDI Swaps here my mechanic said that he will combine luk clutch plt and luk pressure plt with some smf
That will work fine, I think the vr6 clutch holds a bit more torque but either way it will get rid of your rattling.
@TDI Swaps thanks bro
Also doing Ina bearings and continental timing belt
Sounds like it will be ready to roll!
Good info
Thanks, spreading the knowledge!
Is it ok to go from dual mass flywheel to single mass?
Not a problem, that's only a concern with the newer 2009+ transmissions
Is this the same 5 speed manual transmission they used for the inline 5 cylinder?
I believe they have the same bolt pattern but I couldn't confirm if they are the same or not without some research.
