  • This clip contains three different variations of the Neon Mickey Walt Disney Home Entertainment ident, all taken from Betamax copies of Walt Disney Home Video products.
    The Neon Mickey ident was introduced in 1978 coinciding with the Walt Disney Company's ventures into home video for LaserDisc through MCA DiscoVision and, in 1980, on video cassette rentals through Fotomat on both VHS and Betamax.
    The Neon Mickey logo would be used until about the mid 1980s on LaserDisc, CED VideoDisc, Beta, and VHS releases from Walt Disney Home Video.
    1. Blue warning Neon Mickey, taken from "Goofy over Sports"
    2. Red warning Neon Mickey, taken from "Dumbo"
    3. Neon Mickey with previews, taken from "Cartoon Classics Volume 4"
    4. Red and white warning Neon Mickey, taken from "From Pluto with Love"

    The first time I saw Neon Mickey occurred when one of my teachers in middle school showed us an old rented tape of _20,000 Leagues Under the Sea_, and fast-forwarded past the logo to start the movie. Seeing Neon Mickey sped up and silent made it look *really* trippy compared to the Sorcerer Mickey logo.

    That Neon Mickey opening logo used to scare the crap outta me when I was a kid! It wasn't just the way the freaky neon Mickey Mouse silhouette would appear onscreen, it was also the loud triumphant-like music that accompanied it. Creepy!

      @Xanatos21 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's almost as though the neon Mickey Mouse silhouette is trying to talk to you through your television screen: "Ha-ho! I'm gonna get you, kid! Ha-ho!"

      I used to love that logo! I remember in the 2000s my dad had a vhs tape with it and I vividly remember thinking of it while playing hide and seek!

    I used to have old Winnie the Pooh movies on vhs with this logo. It never scared me when I was young, I always found Neon Mickey cool. Because of it's first use of computer technology, the tune of it to me was so fantastic. I still find the tune memorable to this day.

    If you listen closely you can hear the music from the Neon Mickey logo's music begin to play at the end of the "private use" bumper, before the actual logo begins.

    Brings back memories of renting disney tapes from the library in the 80s. I remember the tapes were always old and warped near the beginning so the music always sounded off.

    Sam Witwer proposed the great idea that this fanfare be used in front of the Star Wars sequel movies as a suitable substitute for the 20th Century Fox fanfare. I agree!

      Just listened to that episode of RFR. I think the idea of just silence is superior, but this would still be a fine choice.

      I do too. In fact, the first few notes sound rather identical to the 20th Century Fox fanfare.

    The 1978 version does look noticeably brighter, while the 1981-86 version looks somewhat darker and also has the animatronic Mickey animation shifted up more.

    I remember seeing this logo as a kid at the beginning of The North Avenue Irregulars and all the Winnie the Pooh VHS tapes we'd rent from Blockbuster. I loved this logo and always associate it with the carefree life as a kid

    That last one, the 1983 Neon Mickey logo, was how I was first introduced to the logo itself. I had first seen it on that 1986 VHS of "Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too", the one that has different/shortened opening credits, due to it being taken from a TV airing at the time. When I first saw that, I was confused by the differences, having been more used to the actual version of the featurette, which I obviously saw first. That one was my introduction to Winnie the Pooh as a kid.

    I think Neon Mickey was 3D animated. (Is it either the university is or computer graphics company created this for them, or they did it themselves?) This is before The Black Hole, Tron and John Lasseter present the CGI animation test (Or The Brave Little Toaster.) before he got fired for 22 years before he came back and leave the company in 2018.

    • @Watcher3223
      @Watcher3223  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      More than likely, the animation may have been done using scanimate rather than being CGI as we know it.

    I happen to have the 1985 VHS release of Herbie the Love Bug, and it's the only Disney title that I have that has the 1978-1986 Walt Disney Home Video. The last variant of the logo seen at 2:16 matches the VHS opening of Herbie the Love Bug that I have.

    Was seen on my copy of the VHS version of that title. Other titles with this warning: One (EXTREMELY RARE) version of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, Tex, Trenchcoat (without the Neon Mickey logo), The North Avenue Irregulars, Tron.

    Holy hell, what the eff was Disney thinking with these garish graphics? Thank the animation gods they thought better later on and came up with much more tasteful and classy openings.

    • @Attmay
      @Attmay 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bonnie Walling Remember the late 1990s one that just said "Walt Disney Home Video" and little animation other than the shining of the words? That was neither classy nor tasteful. It was cheap and lazy. At least these look like they put effort into them. It is only in the past few years that they have finally matched the production values of theatrical movie logos.

    • @NJ_Dsneybuf

    The Neon Mickey has got to be the worst logo Walt Disney Home Entertainment/Walt Disney Home Video of all time! Fancy watch a large neon outline on the black background which is so jarring and in your face! Also, the loud bombastic fanfare would certainly scare first time viewer of these early tapes - especially young children! The 1978 & 1984 Walt Disney Home Entertainment/Walt Disney Home logos do not fit in with the neon Mickey!
