Classic VHS promo the played at the end of every Walt Disney Home Entertainment VHS release in the early 80's. Uploaded for pop culture archival purposes. No rights implied or given...
Man, I remember this promo showing up at the end of several old Disney VHS tapes I rented, like Tron and a VHS with a couple of Wonderful World Of Disney episodes featuring Ludwig Von Drake, and it showed up on a tape my sister often rented, Blackbeard's Ghost. Even in the 90s and early 2000s, there were still rental stores that had old VHS tapes where I lived. I miss those...
Interestingly enough, in the actual movie, that final line is said more matter of factly, as opposed to here, where he sound slightly surprised. Evidently, it's from an alternate take.
me too, brings a smile to my face when it starts but leaves me disappointed with the world today when it finishes so i just add it to my favorites to keep the joy it gives me alive.
I remember watching this promo when I was a kid. The scenes from "A Watcher In The Woods" (1:46) scared me every time. Not even Winnie The Pooh's precociousness could undo seeing that blindfolded girl for me.
What's scarier now? The blindfolded girl, or Bill Cosby? Because I was pretty shocked to see him in this promo, and especially in a movie about buying a teenage girl's soul.
I was born in 1999, and I love this! I was so stoked when I found this on my "Mickey Mouse/Donald Duck" VHS tape! I knew every word of this commercial even before I watched the tape! Another one older than this is the "Here are selected highlights from other Walt Disney Home Videocassettes" screen, followed by previews. If you look up the rental taps, you'll find that promo.
If you're a VHS collector, those early "white box" Disney tapes are worth considering. Many of the titles released in that line either weren't seen again or if they were, it wasn't until many years later on DVD and in many cases the DVD release wasn't really advertised at all so you'd be forgiven for not knowing about it. That always kind of baffled me. Here Disney has this HUGE catalog of live action films and classic animated shorts/featurettes and they're not doing anything with them. If I were Disney, I would at least be setting aside a couple of hours of Disney Channel airtime a day to show this old stuff.
As far as their animated classics went, they were focusing on theatrical re-releases (which is why The Aristocats were rereleased twice in seven years).
I remember this at the end of “The North Avenue Irregulars” that I rented often as a kid! I wanted to show it to a co-worker in her mid 20s that loves Disney but hadn’t heard of a lot of the older “live” Disney films from the 60s and 70s. Now she will really think I’m old😁
i remember this previews in a BETA tape my dad bought in San Diego CA. back in 1986, this clips were at the end of Bongo the Bear and Mickey and the beanstalk movie ....
I remember this or disney home video previews very much like it from rentals in my childhood. I think this confirms Watcher in the Woods was the preview that would freak me out. I still want to watch it someday...
My favorite section on the promo is when the announcer says and music. On the new version of the program the song is found in Bedknobs and Broomsticks. But on the other one it's supercalifragilisticexpialidocious from Mary Poppins. Every time that's on I sing along with it because it makes me happy. The 4 cartoons on the promo are Lonesome ghosts(a 1937 mickey mouse short), thru the mirror( a 1936 mickey mouse short, it's like Alice in wonderland), Up a tree( a 1956 Donald Duck short be careful Donald!), and Boat Builders (a 1938 mickey mouse short Be careful Goofy!). You know the ending reminds me of Frosted flakes commercials where with different people they say with him they're great. That's what Tigger does at the end.
4:29 When I first saw this as a kid, when they say "waiting for you", I thought they were saying "Winnie the Pooh", but mispronouncing it as "Winnie the YOU".
Heh, regarding the list of titles appearing starting at the 4:12 mark, it's interesting to see which titles are on Disney+ and which aren't... "The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again" - Yes "The Watcher In The Woods" - No "Gus" - Yes "Treasure Island" - Yes "Dumbo" - Yes "The Shaggy Dog" - Yes "Davy Crockett and the River Pirates" - Yes "Condorman" - No "The One And Only Genuine Original Family Band" - No "The Devil & Max Devlin" - No "The Absent-Minded Professor" - Yes "Goofy Over Sports" - No (as it's a short compilation) "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" - Yes "Herbie Rides Again" - Yes "Pete's Dragon" - Yes "A Tale of Two Critters" - Yes "The Black Hole" - Yes "The Sign of Zorro" - Yes "The Love Bug" - Yes "Pollyanna" - Yes "Escape to Witch Mountain" - Yes "Old Yeller" - Yes "Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier" - Yes "Darby O'Gill and the Little People" - Yes "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" - Yes "Mary Poppins" - Yes "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" - Yes "Alice in Wonderland" - Yes "The North Avenue Irregulars" - No "A Dream Called Walt Disney World" - No (souvenir tape from the resort) "The Apple Dumpling Gang" - Yes "A Day at Disneyland" - No (souvenir tape from the resort) "Hot Lead and Cold Feet" - No "A Walt Disney Christmas" - No (as it's a short compilation) "The Legend of Sleepy hollow" - Yes (as part of "The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad") "Amy" - Yes "Snowball Express" - Yes So that's 27 of the videos shown here available on Disney+, and 10 titles not on the service (as two of them are just short/cartoon compilations and two of them are souvenir tapes sold at the Disney parks.)
I spent about 38 years trying to figure out the title for The Watcher in the Woods, that's seriously a title that rivals Song of the South for being used in promotional material while effectively buried. I'm a tad upset to hear North Avenue Irregulars isn't on there, also Hot Lead Cold feet, how is that not on there?
With Bill Cosby’s ruined reputation nowadays and the controversy that surrounded “The Devil and Max Devlin” when that film was first released...I very much doubt that “The Devil and Max Devlin” will ever stream on Disney+ in a remastered condition if it hasn’t already been streaming on that service. Disney would probably want to forget that the film even exists, just as they would want to forget about their other 1980s and 1970s box office bombs. Disney probably doesn’t even want to digitally restore Condorman if they think it wouldn’t be profitable.
It’s pretty remarkable that 27 titles out of the original lineup listed in the promo were able to be streamed on Disney+ decades after this promo was created. Those titles were able to successfully go through the preparation process required for online streaming. That would probably mean that the master prints were still in existence and in adequate enough shape for digital restoration and preservation. The other ten titles weren’t as lucky. Maybe the master prints are not in good shape or are otherwise lost, or some of the titles were controversial box office bombs to begin with, or the music rights are too complicated to negotiate, or a Disney+ executive may have thought that the titles were too obscure for the streaming to be profitable.
Another Disney movie I love seeing on the Walt Disney and you promo is Pete's Dragon. I use this in honor of Mary Poppins, Pete's Dragon and Bedknobs and Broomsticks.
My favorite movies of the list, in this order: "Escape to Witch Mountain", "Darby O'Gill and the Little People", "Treasure Island", "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea", "Swiss Family Robinson", "Old Yeller" (very sad, but I love it), "Pete's Dragon", "Bedknobs and Broomsticks", "Mary Poppins", "The Watcher in the Woods", "The Shaggy Dog" (I only like the original black and white version), "The One and Only Genuine Original Family Band", and "Condorman", I think...
They haven’t disowned nearly every single one of these properties at all. Most of the more family friendly ones were streaming on Disney+ when you made your comment. The only ones that weren’t streaming on Disney+ would have been the ones that were box office bombs when they came out (Condorman) or very controversial at the time of release AND a box office bomb due to the controversy (Devil and Max Devlin).
I still do! I have tapes from 1981 to 2004 from Disney, and I love them all. Go to your local thrift store, and get a VCR and some tapes, particularly ones you remember. Then you're set.

Wrong. It's from "Hot Lead and Cold Feet".
Garrettk41 I get it.
The Shaggy D.A. 1985 VHS
What is the movie at 0:59? Lean on him!
North Avenue Irregulars, the movie is worth a watch for the ending alone.
pre pixar era media
Which movie(s) do the lines "Lean on him" (0:59) the explosion after that (1:00), and "was that anyone we know" (1:22) come from?
+Attmay The first two are from "The North Avenue Irregulars", the third from "Herbie Rides Again".
1:02 Gus (1976)
2:49 - Mary Poppins (1964)
