Excellent review. Finally a video that covers Valve’s dock, external hard drive as well as connectivity to dual external monitors. Job well done. Thanks!
Oi bought a dock when I grabbed my LE OLED and was needing a secondary charger... I'm glad that they give you one with the dock. Figure $30 for a charger and $50 for the dock itself. I'd say that's well within margin for it as a package. Glad I bought it!
THANK YOU!!!! this is the only video i've really seen about the dock and it may have sold me on it, we'll see!! very entertaining and in-depth, incredible video 💖
One thing to consider about the price is the dual display thing. This requires some extra special components that actually are quite costly. If you throw the charger this Dock is actually a steal in comparison to others in the market with same display output. I’d love to see both a Windows and a Max laptop connected to this. I think this can be a pretty good solution for a single cable setup.
Hey lads, two things. First, the steam deck is a pretty decent ultra book. I’m using it to play with a few stuff in C++ (I saw someone running unity in it), so don’t sleep on it. Second the SteamDeck Dock has a USB PD, means that this protocol supports up to 100w on current implementation and will be up to 240w with new parts in near future (not the current dock). My point about the Dock is more around with what people is comparing. Maybe some cheaper docks can’t handle 4K 60hz (not talking about gaming, but OS feel), maybe they can have faulty components, who knows. Again, that’s the beauty on what Valve did. If you don’t need the extras, like the two monitors or 4K, go for the cheaper models, if you don’t need the included power supply but rather have a nvme slot? JSaux is the way to go. I love the open source mentality in here and just wanted to bring up that this dock is probably overkill for the 90% of SteamDeck users so the price is a somewhat all over the place but for the 10%, oh boy I’m quite excited. Just in comparison about quality, the Steam Dock is WAY more reliable than my Razer Laptop Stand V2 (I know, I know, razer products can have pretty bad quality). My biggest pet peeve? Attached USB-C cable. C’mon.
The FIRST video where someone actually tries it with a TPU cover on it in the dock. THANK YOU. I have the same cover and will use an extension and likely put something that looks good on the front to hold the deck in more. Great video!
Keep in mind that Usb C cables have certain bandwidths that can be limited by using lower grade extenders. Not all usb C cables / extenders are the same. Some are actually usb 2.0 disguised as usb 3.0 or higher.
Main reason I got this dock over jsaux: it lets me use the deck as a complete Linux computer. Jsaux needs windows installed to update firmware. Which yeah I have a windows PC but Mac users are sol, chrome book users, people who were already Linux only, and the handful of people that use the deck as their only PC. Yes you can install windows on the deck but that's extra hassle, and money.
Jsaux is not the only brand that make adaptors, I bought one for 60 bucks that has all same ports plus card readers minus the dock form factor but for me ain't a big deal just let the steam deck sit on the desk, I think the price of the dock is overkill for what you get
You can still do that on the jsaux. I own one! Haven't updated any firmware either! The updates are just for tvs that don't work out of the box. Now if you're talking display port well I understand
I'm so glad this comes with another charger cord as my dog chewed on the tip of my steam deck one(which he never does) so I feel like it's gonna give out anyday now
Awesome. Just ordered mine yesterday. I’m using a 43” TV for my monitor. I have my Pioneer DJ speakers hooked up to that. I also use my Sony Pulse 3D headphones with the USB-C hub I have now. I’m sure all of that will continue to function. Can’t wait to get mine.
If you use a thicker case like this one, try the Ivoler dock. The deck sits securely in it and the USB plug still fits even with the case on (I have the exact same one as in the video). The dock was a lot cheaper than the official one (although it doesn’t come with a PSU) and it’s even made of metal. The only thing it doesn’t have is the display port.
I love you, man! I just got the official dock and quite literally just opened it, only to be disappointed by the fact that it's very restrictive. Just like you, I have the same case for the Steam Deck and had bought the iVoler dock a few weeks ago. I figured buying the official dock would work in the long run, but given that it won't let me fit the Deck with the case and the charging cable won't fit either, I simply put the dock back in its case and took the iVoler out of its box. I know some Steam fanboys will rage at this, but Steam messed up with this one. They're definitely going to lose to third party accessories.
Just got mine and tbh even if the cable fit, it's a bit too slim for it to fit with a case on, consider a third party/3d printed one and doll it up with some self adhesive rubbed or felt around the cradle area.
1:13 the fact that the official dock comes with another power brick can also be very helpful if by some crazy chance you lost the power brick that came with your deck
Assuming it does send audio out the hdmi(or displayport), you could also likely easily find another device that will split the audio from the video to allow you to have something dedicated plugged in. I'm thinking something the likes of a TV receiver, but maybe smaller and cheaper than many of them. Only downsides would be another device to plug in, and you'd probably be introducing some latency.
I don't like how the plug sits flush on top of the deck, most people will have some kind of case on it, this video single-handedly deterred me away from the official dock. Thanks!
oh nice. didn't know about the dual monitor support. It is actually a big deal - docking stations with dual monitor support are pricy. But with it you can basically replace a casual home PC
Was concerned whether or not my case would fit with the Steam Deck in the Dock. My official dock is arriving tomorrow I believe and I actually have the Spigen case which a whole slot is cut out around the charging port so you can plug in cables like that. Glad to see that the one in the video fits with the case so hopefully it will work out for my Spigen case.
@@MrTrollingcraft Does not fit the Spigen case unfortunately, might have to go without a case because I really want to use the dock. Will mostly be playing it around my house but still wish the docks were a little bigger.

I have also had issues with the dock not passing video through to the tv. I have tried reseating the cables and it worked once the other two times I had to power off the deck and power it back on.

Get yourself a DBrand vinyl decal for it. That will protect your Steam Deck from getting scratched. Then it will fit in the dock fine. Your case serves no other purpose, isn't going to prevent your Deck from getting damaged if you drop it. I guess the smart phone industry successfully conditioned everyone that a case was a must thing every time they bought a handheld devise. Not necessary.
Yup, but because it comes with the charger and it can update via the steamdeck. Just got mine, and using the Killswitch case. It won't sit in the cradle, but the USB c cable fits fine.
Great review! My husband just ordered this for me for christmas. I'm a little saddened the case doesn't dock well. I have that same one but I think it's worth having the official dock for the Steam support. The external hard drive is clever. I hadn't thought to do that.
Just for a clarification, not just a usb c extender will work I’m pretty sure. Cause it’s transferring video the usb c, my recommendation which I don’t think is talked about for a good accessory cause I don’t think it’s known. Magtame thundbolt adapter. Worked so well ended with a right angle for my nice pd anker charger. And a straight for the dock. Just snaps into place so you don’t have to worry about messing around with your case. Pretty sure it will just work. I have a spigen thin fit pro shell and a better nicer hard case. So the spigen fits the official dock. I just use magtame for peace of mind when charging. I’m thinking yall knowing this will come in clutch for your non official dock cases 👍
I opted for one from Amazon and it works great.. and has 2 more USB ports plus it'll dock with your protector on it and it was only $16 with free shipping. The Spigen case works great with the USB plug. With the Official dock and the Jsaux one. I personally have the Jsaux and it fits decently well in the dock even with the case on.
Where do you go to change the settings to display it on the dock and the monitor ??? I accidentally chose to have the screen off on the steam deck and display on , on the tv. But I want both on !
Anyone know how to get any other USB C device to output video on this thing? The connectivity options are great, but it sadly seems to only work with the Steam Deck.
I have questions about material and if it'll leave residue on my hands? Is this silicone or carbon fiber I don't like residue on my hands? I noticed it said rubber in middle of dock? Do you also recommend it?
I wish it had more usb ports, considering 2 of them in my case are always taken by keyboard and mouse, I'm left with just one for other stuffs, like controller dongle, flash drives, webcam, etc
Can I use the dock without connected Power Adapter? I don't want constantly charge my Steam Deck and degrade it's battery, so can it be used without connected Power Adapter?
Thanks for that. I do not understand why they didn't add 3.5mm. Many people use headset AND speakers and maybe both require a 3.5mm slot. Furthermore people that have a case for their Deck can't fit it in properly as you mentioned. I mean thats very unfortunate. It could have been perfect but sadly it isn't.
I want to like the dock, but there's a couple of issues I have with it. First, for some weird reason, my Deck won't connect to the internet whenever it's docked. It does connect when it isn't though. Second, not all of my games are willing to launch. I tried to play Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed, but the game will kick me out every time I try to launch it. It works when I undock it, launch the game, then redock the Deck; but it gets annoying doing those extra steps.
You can buy a USB c dock of any kind and use it. I grabbed one of Amazon for less than 20$. It's a 6-in-one unit that has 4K HDMI out and 60 watt pass through charging. Along with a couple of other ports USB SD cards and such.
I wonder how this would work if you don't own a PC but want a steam deck and want to use it as a pc. Heard people have played WoW and stuff on their steam decks
This is one of the reasons I'm getting the deck and dock.. seen WoW played on other TH-cam videos and will be a great alternative to buying a gaming PC
@@gnarface3831 this is exactly what I want a "switch PC"... I love my switch but wish I'd could handle some games better like CIV 6 with mods and with the steam deck I can
It would work well for light pc work noting to intensive but it would be close to on par with a small gaming laptop. browsing web watching video and stuff like that should all be fine and gaming as well but keep in mind it should not be expected to game at 4k high max resolutions or anything. but its a very solid device for sure
When I use both HDMI and Display port (in desktop and gaming mode) neither of them produces output. It's only when I have *one* of them plugged in that I can get output. Any advice?
I don’t quite see the point of the dock. If you’re hooking it up to a PC, why not just play the games on the PC? And if you hook it up to a TV you’d have to get an additional joypad to use it, in which case wouldn’t you be better off just buying a console?
A monitor is not a pc, some people may want to use a steam deck as an alternative to a pc. As for connecting to a TV, alot of people will have a huge library of games they'd love to play on a large screen but would find it a hassle to move their pc to the living room everytime they want to do that, not to mention having to navigate a desktop to get to their games needing to plug in a keyboard and mouse. Most pc gamers already own a controller for certain games that simply play better on one.
It a cool way to easily hook it up a large monitor when you get home and you can use it as a light weight pc or just game on it as well like a console. You would prolly want to get a controller or keyboard and mouse with the dock as well. Its personal preferences to be honest but its cool to the the option
I'll pass this info on to my loud nerd grandson!

Does it prevent the steam deck fan from making alot of noises?
How did they deliver it with black tape over the delivery address?
I wish it had more usb ports, considering 2 of them in my case are always taken by keyboard and mouse, I'm left with just one for other stuffs, like controller dongle, flash drives, webcam, etc
Can I use the dock without connected Power Adapter? I don't want constantly charge my Steam Deck and degrade it's battery, so can it be used without connected Power Adapter?
Yes
what protective cover is that?
DLseego Steam Deck TPU Protective Case - Hope it helps!
Is it still worth getting for charging only no plans to use it on the tv/monitor I'm partially sighted so I'll only be in handheld
Nice! You sold me
Thanks for that.
You could buy a USB soundcard & plug it into the dock.
There is always something. Its still a very solid device
Do you need to buy an HDMI cord to plug the dock into a monitor or TV?
the dock i used doesnt have a ether net port, i use an ether net to usb adapter.
I don't get why you would want an audio jack for the dock when you have one on the steam deck?
@@dennell Hopefully people do videos on it. It might be a must buy for me if that's the case. A switch PC? That sounds too cool to be real already
Fair comment.
It a cool way to easily hook it up a large monitor when you get home and you can use it as a light weight pc or just game on it as well like a console. You would prolly want to get a controller or keyboard and mouse with the dock as well. Its personal preferences to be honest but its cool to the the option
I’ve ordered one 😁
Would my USB headphones work without problem though if I hook into the docking station?
hmmm I typed steam reviews, and it only come reviws for the deck not for desk top, thats what I was looking for
Is the dock essentially just a USB-C hub with a stand?
More or less. Its fitted nicely for the steam deck and has updates from valve as well but a usb c hub could do the same things as well
audio port on steam deck works fine in dock mode :)
tried it with my usb c hub as im still waiting for the docking station to arrive
I really think they should just include that in the box if Nintendo can include it with the switch that I'm pretty sure valves can do it too
is the docks adaptor the same rated wattage?
