It’s crazy how some of Mumbo’s older bases would be considered small “projects” in the newer seasons. It just shows how far he pushed the scale of his builds as the season go on.
They look great! I started watching hermitcraft on season 6, so I hadn't even seen his season 5 base. It was surprising how big it was and how great it looked, especially seen as Mumbo always said he was terrible at building. The nether portal area, the storage area, and the whole geometric base in the actual ocean all look amazing. I swear his season 6 base was bigger when he built it and it has shrunk over time though haha. I remember it as this massive sphere, but looking at it now it is so much smaller than the season 7 and 8 builds (and probably smaller than his season 5 build).
I really hope the shopping district comes back, im assuming it was absent because of the small amount of time they had but it was my favorite part of the last 2 seasons because it was the culmination of all of the hermits' creations.
Noo, village is a far better idea, so much more interaction, if I want to see the builds I can download the map after the season ends. The interactions between the hermits are the best patr of season 8.

Looking back I kind of realise that I miss all the rooms and farms and details tucked into the interiors in the older bases. There’s no denying that the Season 7 and 8 bases are beautiful. I just would love to see them stuffed full of… stuff!
Agree. Current Hermits' bases are beautiful on the outside and empty on the inside. They spend lots of time making the bases and then don't put anything in them.
I totally agree with this- the big bases are pretty, but they aren’t functional… I mean mumbo never even put anything in his storage system. ! What’s the point of having the fancy bases if you can’t actually use them? I think the fun challenge is integrating functionality and form- making the farms look pretty, and making the base useful
I think that season 6 was the best and most complete season. The scale was amazing, the collabs were on point, Sahara was fantastic. Definitely peak hermitcraft
I can never forget about the MELON AND PUMPKIB CIRCLE OF DOOM that crashed the server just by existing due to mumbo's overflow of melon and pumkins from his gigantic farm that one season, it was super hilarious back then and really stuck to me as a mumbo thing lol
Sadly none of the Hermits got this recorded, but when Mumbo built his iron farms in Season 4, he forgot to put collection areas or even bottoms to them, so it would make iron golems, drop them out of range of the farm, and make more. When Xisuma found it there were hundreds of iron golems below Mumbo's base.
Regarding the scale of the early bases. The lack of elytra makes a difference. Not being able to fly to different areas of your base is likely going to impact the distance you would want to put things.
I've only been watching Hermitcraft since season 6, and I feel very nostalgic... I can't imagine how people that were here since season 2 feel now I mean, seeing Sahara literally melted my heart
It would be really cool if Mumbo based his Hermitcraft season 9 base on all the little good ideas that he had in his past bases and combined them to make the ultimate Hermitcraft base!
Good point! Even as recent seasons developed more organic details, they still had geometric or symmetrical foundations. Mumbo really pushed himself this season, and it paid off!✨

If you have experience doing something hard, it becomes easy. That's why I build lots of domes; once you build enough, you know how to do it, and you can do it to show off a bit.
I "only" started watching with season 5, but i think it's still my favorite base to this day. I know it was basically just you alone in the middle of the ocean, but having everything connected in the base, with separate areas for each farm and a storage system to join everything together (as flawed as it was in practice) is just really cool. 7 and 8 are also really cool building-wise, but they are missing the "practical" parts, imo. Also why i'm not really a fan of industrial districts. I know they serve to reduce the lag in the primary living areas, but having all these redstone-y areas integrated in the base itself is what makes the season 5 base my favorite.
This Season 5 and 6 are my favourites because even though season 7 and 8 make you say holy shit they really miss the extra parts of the base like the buildings around the globe in season 6 or the farms surrounding season 5's base. they make it feel more complete and like places you could stay in forever.
also started with season 5, it has a sense of nostalgia and a sense of use. I agree that it's so much better just because of the function of it, not just looks. I feel like even without extreme redstone projects there could be something to make home feel like it has life in it. Maybe s9 both would be a nice touch, not so much to the point it's laggy, just enough to be lived in if that makes sense. Great take (:
I started watching hermitcraft in season 6 and absolutely loved it. Then season 7 came and it was even better. But I didn't get the same feelings with season 8. I don't like shorter seasons as it rushes everything, doesn't let little plot lines develop (mycelium war, the keralis games, etc.), and doesn't give enough time for me to become attached to it.
I really liked how Mumbo’s bases transitions so well from 1 season to another. He started with jungle paradise, then went over to winter “paradise” with custom trees, then aerospace and started terraforming, then ocean, then ocean with special biomes, then went back to jungle ruins, then went to jungle village and cave.
I've seen all of seasons 6 - 8, so seeing the base for season 5 was a real treat! that storage system is absolutely stunning, it really scratches the brain (in a good way)

Season 5 is when I started watching mumbo. Just looked up "hermit craft" one day, getting back into MC, and having only heard of it. That's honestly my favorite seasons, but also the builds were amazing. The storage was super inspiring too.
Yea .. definitely felt outta nowhere and wayy too short .. most probably these guys were still planning something with 1.18 update and decided a fresh start would be the best thing to do for it.
They specifically mentioned they were going to upgrade from 1.17 to 1.18 in the first episode but decided to just start a new season instead. I personally think ending it all that quickly was really scuffed.
@@4922jack I don’t think they decided to end the season until after 1.18 came out. Although I wish they decided to keep season 8 just a little bit longer to finish up storylines properly.
S2 Base was my favorite. That was around the time I started playing Minecraft on 2014 and my sister and I watched all the HermitCraft videos. The base build was simple but so interesting to me. Thank you for the good times, Mumbo!

Seeing the scale chance is crazy, I remember watching all of these seasons when they were new and thinking how crazy it was that the build was so massive, only to be dwarfed by the next haha
I don't know, civil wars are pretty good too. You can't script things like the mycelium war. I think the hermits were too focused on finishing a season quickly to have an all out war.
I loved the base swap as it was a good way to introduce viewers to new creators on the server and have some interactions between hermits who haven't done much together yet in the season. It was also cool to see builders adding details to redstoners bases and redstoners adding cool functions to builders bases. I agree about not having a war in season 8, as that would have become a bit of a trope that there is always a war in every season, but it was enjoyable to watch. The mycelium turf war wasn't really a proper war, especially not like the Season 6 civil war. I hope they do something like the season 6 war again, I just enjoyed the double agents, making bases to raid and all the different tactics to fight each other haha.
Mumbo, the term for the squashed sphere is an “oblate spheroid.” This is also the shape of the Earth. The Earth is wider at the equator, due to centrifugal force caused by the Earth’s rotation.

For S9 maybe you could try building something in a steampunk theme. It has the industrial elements that you've always liked but it also has organic/asymmetrical things. I think you would like it. It would also work well with the 1.18 features.

You’ve done so many red stone videos, and now you’ve proven that you can be a great builder. For season 9, you should make a base that really incorporates both halves of your play style. Make a really cool build that is filled with red stone contraptions and hidden components, I think that would be awesome :)
I started watching Hermitcraft starting near the end of season two up to the beginning of season six. Seeing all these old bases really brings back memories, shows how far you've advanced as a builder, and how far the game has come along the years!
1. Season 7 - Mumbo's most beautiful base. Honestly, everyone nailed it this season. 2. Season 5 - The layout and design for this base was literally perfect. And that storage system... 3. Season 8 - Excellent execution, especially when looking at what inspired it. 4. Season 6 - Mumbo''s most unique base. He did a great job at sticking with the futuristic theme. 5. Season 3 - The redstone doesn't work well with the ice theme, but the world generation was too perfect. 6. Season 4 - Pretty haphazard but a lot of cool elements scattered throughout. 7. Season 2 - Really cool for its time, and insanely nostalgic.
what a trip through memory lane for me! i started watching as season 3 was ending. i watched all of season 4, most of season 5, all of season 6, all of season 7, and then all of season 8. I remember most of these bases and watching you build them. also, my favorite base of yours was probably season 6. I loved the huge sphere and the city around it, it's so majestic.
Mumbo is becoming a great builder, surpassing me when I have inspiration. By season 12, he will be so much better than me. Probably because Mumbo spends so much time playing Minecraft.
Yea. On a single player world or a multiplayer world with only a few players where bases are separated by massive distances it is great. However with so players bunched relatively close together as in HermitCraft…everyone having all their own farms created far too much lag if multiple players were on & at their bases.😕🤷🏻♀️ Which is why in season 8 most people built the majority of their industrial farms far enough away from their bases to not be loaded in unless they specifically went to them. Or they had ways to turn off the farms in their base area. I personally love seeing players build bases which include all of the different farms a player would need for a long term survival world. But that just isn’t practical with so many players…especially when said players *ALL* tend to build absolutely massive versions of each type of farm. But I have enjoyed seeing the Hermits figuring out how to may highly productive but very condensed farms out of necessity. It has led to so very inventive farm ideas…many of which are actually far simpler to build than the massive farms of past seasons & that are built by most players in long term worlds. Also such lower lag farm designs are nice for those of us primarily playing on devices like the Switch without the processing power of the powerful gaming PCs most players use.
It also is rather surprising That you managed to build a Mega base as part of a giga base In less than 40 episodes we're gonna took you more than a 120 to do season 6 and 7
Yeah but in season 8 he basically did no big projects aside from the mega base. He only made the outline of his industrial district and the only thing in his mega base is a storage system. The beautiful build is still a amazing accomplishment tho. As a person who still builds wooden boxes I’m impressed

I checked and There’s loads of stuff. Check it out yourself for the full list I just scrolled through very quickly but I already saw lots of stuff like hermit challenges the button grumbot and more.
Mumbo's base only survived the season because people like Grian kept it alive. The man should probably not put any more Tamagotchi bases in his builds until his spoon brain can remember to feed it.
As someone who hasn't really started watching Hermitcraft until Season 8, this is a really cool recap to fill me in on how Mumbo's work and Hermitcraft have developed over the years!
I remember when Mumbo's cows got turned into Mooshrooms in his HermitCraft Season 2 base, and the Giant Rubik's Cube. Such a throwback! I am interested in seeing how Mumbo moves on from here, though, as it has been an honor to watch his videos for so long, and I will happily continue to watch his videos.
Seeing hermitcraft 5 absolutely shattered me. First videos I ever saw was that little town you built and the little cave part with all the barrels… absolutely blew my mind seeing that stuff again
for s9 i’d love for him to be that one hermit that just makes an insane base; scale, detail, redstone etc - a big ask but i think possible! maybe something playing around with the caves part of 1.18 now he’s good at natural builds?
Wow, after this nostalgia trip I’ve realized I’ve been here for the last 7 if not 8 years. I feel very privileged to see you grow as a creator not only in Minecraft but further expanding your content style into filmmaking. I still remember the first episode I ever watched was around 5 episodes into season 2. Thank you so much Mumbo for providing both myself and the Minecraft community as a whole hours of well made content for nearly the last decade.
i suspect that part of the reason the season ended so soon was because of the big updates that have dropped. everyone was probably antsy for a new start with caves & cliffs part 2, the bigger world limit, and all of the features that are coming their way. i hope season nine will be full of new ideas!
Jeah, it's just as he said in the video at one point: Nowadays, he designs seperate farm districts - so the "base" is basically a nice exterior for his storage system.
@@DaijDjan That's really boring though. There's something I find deeply unsatisfying about a "mega base" that's just a huge facade containing, at most, a handful of small farms and then just the storage system. The bases with different functional areas feel a lot more alive to me.
@@etherealg3940 Hermitcraft needs to look at Empires smp for inspiration on how to make megabuilds without relying on farms to make them feel alive. Hermitcraft will always be the best for its shenanigans but I think Empires has a much better philosophy on how to approach building and it shows. Every build on that server feels connected, like a part of something greater.
even during season 9, i still think Mumbo's season 7 base is the coolest just because of that living element of the golden heart and having to keep his base alive. that idea is just so awesome. i hope we can see more creative things for Mumbo's bases in future seasons of HermitCraft like season 10.
5:59 Season 3 was the first season of Hermitcraft I ever watched, and I remember your base looking massive. The Hermitcraft build scale just keeps getting bigger and bigger until the old stuff looks tiny in comparison.
My last (and first) consistant season watching you was season 6. I started watching season 7 but life got in the way, so seeing how amazing that base turned out is incredible. Last I saw, you were still working on building the diagonal support towers.
Same! I loved season 6(was especially invested in sahara, all of it was automated, it was so cool).When season 7 started I tried to watch multiple players(who appeared in mumbo's s6 videos) as well, as to keep up with the bigger picture. But life also got in the way and i just didn't have the time
I have been very much out of the Hermitcraft loop and started getting interesting recently, I always knew you as the guy who was the king of all things redstone, but not that good at building, but now I see that you are the king of all things redstone, and extraordinarily good at building too. Seeing the linear progression of your bases as you improved and sharpened your skills makes me strangely proud of you, even though I don't know you personally. Good job Mumbo Jumbo, thumbs up from me.
@@danhaas9730 yeah at the start they said they were going to reload all the chunks outside the main island which is why they were all so close together, they either tricked us to make the moon thing more of a surprise or they decided at some point in the season that they wanted to fully reset in order to build their bases in a 1.18 environment

Season 6 was something else, by far the best season. Watching Hermitcraft is always a delight, but i sure hope one of the next seasons will top even that!
Yeah I feel hermitcraft peaked at s6 or early s7, not to say any of the other seasons were bad, in fact they were brilliant too. But Season 6 was on another level, with the civil war and hippies. The best season. However it's very likely season 9 will be even better, with all the fantastic hermits here!
Amazed at your progression, Mumbo! I've been watching you for a while now and this is probably the best way to see all at once how far you've come...outside of your doors videos. For that last one, maybe a thick, sprawling jungle outside of the base. Scatter the odd small monument here and there along some overgrown path to the base to serve as a warning to turn back. I mean, the season's done, but if you ever make something like that again...or if I can find the time to try it myself :)
Seeing this all, I have one hope for season 9 Hermitcraft, when it starts. With the ending episode of everybody in Hermitcraft 8, the animated one showing the fate of that world, and the Caves part of caves and cliffs being released, I would really like to see what the Hermits could do with an almost purely underground season. I'm talking as in the Hermits all spawn underground, in a lush cave, with some wood and saplings, and avoiding the "contaminated" surface as much as possible. Why do I think this would be a good thing for the Hermits to undertake? Well, to an extent it will address the constantly expanding mega/giga bases, and have hermits weighing their choice of having a large base, and all the hallowing out of the earth that must occur for that to happen, or making a smaller, more compact base, but loaded with more detail, and maximizing their limited space. The second reason is simple, to showcase and encourage the use of the new cave materials and cave generation the update comes with. Finally if you wanted to add in some more narrative elements, as well as unscripted unpredictability, the possibility of the hermits spawning in at random (but still relatively nearby) cave systems would add a great deal of comradery, and potentially allow viewers to see teams that normally don't happen, like a Grian/Tango Tek, or a Scar/Xumavoid. (Or force TFC out of his hobbit hole and actually socialize with the other Hermits for once).
I remember season 6 being so mad that the middle ring wasn’t your first idea of being a stone kind of cliff side. And looking at in now, I expected it to be that when I looked at it lol.
I think S6 is my favourite base of yours, partly because I just love the cool sphere and the way all the farms are incorporated around it, and partly because watching you build it was what got me into Hermitcraft in the first place! Hope you had a great holiday period, and can't wait to see what you do in S9!

It probably was absent because of the season's lenght. It was a short season, so they might as well experiment with it

I wholly agree. But there is something... religious feeling?.. about big, beautiful, utility-less monuments. Which is what a lot of their bases are.

Regarding the scale of the early bases. The lack of elytra makes a difference. Not being able to fly to different areas of your base is likely going to impact the distance you would want to put things.

If you have experience doing something hard, it becomes easy. That's why I build lots of domes; once you build enough, you know how to do it, and you can do it to show off a bit.
I love how you started with organic builds, then went through a technological and industrial phase, and looped back to organic builds!

I "only" started watching with season 5, but i think it's still my favorite base to this day. I know it was basically just you alone in the middle of the ocean, but having everything connected in the base, with separate areas for each farm and a storage system to join everything together (as flawed as it was in practice) is just really cool. 7 and 8 are also really cool building-wise, but they are missing the "practical" parts, imo.
Also why i'm not really a fan of industrial districts. I know they serve to reduce the lag in the primary living areas, but having all these redstone-y areas integrated in the base itself is what makes the season 5 base my favorite.

Season 5 and 6 are my favourites because even though season 7 and 8 make you say holy shit they really miss the extra parts of the base like the buildings around the globe in season 6 or the farms surrounding season 5's base. they make it feel more complete and like places you could stay in forever.

I feel like even without extreme redstone projects there could be something to make home feel like it has life in it. I started watching hermitcraft in season 6 and absolutely loved it. Then season 7 came and it was even better. But I didn't get the same feelings with season 8. I don't like shorter seasons as it rushes everything, doesn't let little plot lines develop (mycelium war, the keralis games, etc.), and doesn't give enough time for me to become attached to it.

What I love about the older bases is that they feel a bit more cozy - rather than building pretty but enormous structures.
This is always my biggest issue with megabases in general. They're very impressive and cool, but I wouldn't want to live there.

He started with jungle paradise, then went over to winter “paradise” with custom trees, then aerospace and started terraforming, then ocean, then ocean with special biomes, then went back to jungle ruins, then went to jungle village and cave.

I've seen all of seasons 6 - 8, so seeing the base for season 5 was a real treat! that storage system is absolutely stunning, it really scratches the brain (in a good way)

Season 5 is when I started watching mumbo. Just looked up "hermit craft" one day, getting back into MC, and having only heard of it. That's honestly my favorite seasons, but also the builds were amazing. The storage was super inspiring too.

S2 Base was my favorite. That was around the time I started playing Minecraft on 2014 and my sister and I watched all the HermitCraft videos. The base build was simple but so interesting to me. Thank you for the good times, Mumbo!

I would love to see some more base swaps in future seasons. For me, that was one of the highlights of season 7.
I don't know, civil wars are pretty good too. You can't script things like the mycelium war. I think the hermits were too focused on finishing a season quickly to have an all out war.
I loved the base swap in series 7. I'd like to see it introduced again!

I loved the base swap as it was a good way to introduce viewers to new creators on the server and have some interactions between hermits who haven't done much together yet in the season. It was also cool to see builders adding details to redstoners bases and redstoners adding cool functions to builders bases.
I agree about not having a war in season 8, as that would have become a bit of a trope that there is always a war in every season, but it was enjoyable to watch. The mycelium turf war wasn't really a proper war, especially not like the Season 6 civil war. I hope they do something like the season 6 war again, I just enjoyed the double agents, making bases to raid and all the different tactics to fight each other haha.

Make a really cool build that is filled with red stone contraptions and hidden components, I think that would be awesome :)

I started watching Hermitcraft starting near the end of season two up to the beginning of season six. Seeing all these old bases really brings back memories, shows how far you've advanced as a builder, and how far the game has come along the years!

1. Season 7 - Mumbo's most beautiful base. Honestly, everyone nailed it this season.
2. Season 5 - The layout and design for this base was literally perfect. And that storage system...
3. Season 8 - Excellent execution, especially when looking at what inspired it.
4. Season 6 - Mumbo''s most unique base. He did a great job at sticking with the futuristic theme.
5. Season 3 - The redstone doesn't work well with the ice theme, but the world generation was too perfect.
6. Season 4 - Pretty haphazard but a lot of cool elements scattered throughout.
7. Season 2 - Really cool for its time, and insanely nostalgic.

Personally I love having the farms Integrated into the base, it adds so much life and purpose
Yea. On a single player world or a multiplayer world with only a few players where bases are separated by massive distances it is great. However with so players bunched relatively close together as in HermitCraft…everyone having all their own farms created far too much lag if multiple players were on & at their bases.😕🤷🏻♀️ Which is why in season 8 most people built the majority of their industrial farms far enough away from their bases to not be loaded in unless they specifically went to them. Or they had ways to turn off the farms in their base area. I personally love seeing players build bases which include all of the different farms a player would need for a long term survival world. But that just isn’t practical with so many players…especially when said players *ALL* tend to build absolutely massive versions of each type of farm. But I have enjoyed seeing the Hermits figuring out how to may highly productive but very condensed farms out of necessity. It has led to so very inventive farm ideas…many of which are actually far simpler to build than the massive farms of past seasons & that are built by most players in long term worlds. Also such lower lag farm designs are nice for those of us primarily playing on devices like the Switch without the processing power of the powerful gaming PCs most players use.

I remember when Mumbo's cows got turned into Mooshrooms in his HermitCraft Season 2 base, and the Giant Rubik's Cube. Such a throwback! I am interested in seeing how Mumbo moves on from here, though, as it has been an honor to watch his videos for so long, and I will happily continue to watch his videos.

i suspect that part of the reason the season ended so soon was because of the big updates that have dropped. everyone was probably antsy for a new start with caves & cliffs part 2, the bigger world limit, and all of the features that are coming their way. i hope season nine will be full of new ideas!

Jeah, it's just as he said in the video at one point: Nowadays, he designs seperate farm districts - so the "base" is basically a nice exterior for his storage system.
@@DaijDjan That's really boring though. There's something I find deeply unsatisfying about a "mega base" that's just a huge facade containing, at most, a handful of small farms and then just the storage system. The bases with different functional areas feel a lot more alive to me.

@@etherealg3940 Hermitcraft needs to look at Empires smp for inspiration on how to make megabuilds without relying on farms to make them feel alive. Hermitcraft will always be the best for its shenanigans but I think Empires has a much better philosophy on how to approach building and it shows. Every build on that server feels connected, like a part of something greater.
even during season 9, i still think Mumbo's season 7 base is the coolest just because of that living element of the golden heart and having to keep his base alive. that idea is just so awesome. i hope we can see more creative things for Mumbo's bases in future seasons of HermitCraft like season 10.

@@danhaas9730 yeah at the start they said they were going to reload all the chunks outside the main island which is why they were all so close together, they either tricked us to make the moon thing more of a surprise or they decided at some point in the season that they wanted to fully reset in order to build their bases in a 1.18 environment

Season 6 was something else, by far the best season. Watching Hermitcraft is always a delight, but i sure hope one of the next seasons will top even that!
Yeah I feel hermitcraft peaked at s6 or early s7, not to say any of the other seasons were bad, in fact they were brilliant too. But Season 6 was on another level, with the civil war and hippies. The best season. However it's very likely season 9 will be even better, with all the fantastic hermits here!

Amazed at your progression, Mumbo! I've been watching you for a while now and this is probably the best way to see all at once how far you've come...outside of your doors videos. For that last one, maybe a thick, sprawling jungle outside of the base. Scatter the odd small monument here and there along some overgrown path to the base to serve as a warning to turn back. I mean, the season's done, but if you ever make something like that again...or if I can find the time to try it myself :)
Seeing this all, I have one hope for season 9 Hermitcraft, when it starts. With the ending episode of everybody in Hermitcraft 8, the animated one showing the fate of that world, and the Caves part of caves and cliffs being released, I would really like to see what the Hermits could do with an almost purely underground season.
I'm talking as in the Hermits all spawn underground, in a lush cave, with some wood and saplings, and avoiding the "contaminated" surface as much as possible.
Why do I think this would be a good thing for the Hermits to undertake? Well, to an extent it will address the constantly expanding mega/giga bases, and have hermits weighing their choice of having a large base, and all the hallowing out of the earth that must occur for that to happen, or making a smaller, more compact base, but loaded with more detail, and maximizing their limited space. The second reason is simple, to showcase and encourage the use of the new cave materials and cave generation the update comes with. Finally if you wanted to add in some more narrative elements, as well as unscripted unpredictability, the possibility of the hermits spawning in at random (but still relatively nearby) cave systems would add a great deal of comradery, and potentially allow viewers to see teams that normally don't happen, like a Grian/Tango Tek, or a Scar/Xumavoid. (Or force TFC out of his hobbit hole and actually socialize with the other Hermits for once).

That's true. At least some of them would have been before Elytra too, I think? So it just wouldn't have been designed for an aerial view at all.

I remember season 6 being so mad that the middle ring wasn’t your first idea of being a stone kind of cliff side. And looking at in now, I expected it to be that when I looked at it lol.
I think S6 is my favourite base of yours, partly because I just love the cool sphere and the way all the farms are incorporated around it, and partly because watching you build it was what got me into Hermitcraft in the first place! Hope you had a great holiday period, and can't wait to see what you do in S9!
