This is by far the most in-depth review I've seen for this device. Thank you so much for your hard work, and please keep us posted if/when you hear anything else about the updates to firmware for the App or controller.
Unlike the Edge, the full lab test is seriously impressive. The benchmarking chart visuals, the idea to just UNPLUG the fan to settle that question once and for all... The visual transitions from live handcam to in-game capture, wrap-up ...this is an A+++ review effort.
i own the razer edge 5g and i have no regrest, its a awesome device , being able to be at the airport while playing spiderman miles morales from my pc and r6 siege on xbox cloud with no issues was just amazing, plus the emulators make it better. deftly worth it to have the device with you
Thank you so much for putting together a very thorough review. This is exactly what I've been look for that so many out TH-camrs have failed to deliver to past week or so. Keep up the good work.
I was a little pissed about the state of the nexus app out of the box on the 5g version and the screen was pretty underwhelming off the bat with the large bezels and rounded corner. After playing around with it a lot I have since focused in on the positives. Really great performance with little to no messing round. Game code, wii, 3ds, and ps2 all running with no issue right out of the box with out tinkering. Honestly now I am just waiting on stronger emulators to get the android market.
Excellent video... The WiFi version looks like a good value. I'll probably pick one up eventually and as far as why this and not a phone with controller, serviceability. Most modern cell phones are not end user serviceable and when the battery dies or something else goes wrong it's discarded. With this device it should be useable for many years. That's a great selling point for me 👍 In fact if not for that I'd just stick with my razer phone 2.
Excellent unbiased review! Especially love the benchmark with stock thermal paste vs re-paste with fan and without fan. This shows how proper cooling really goes a long way. Too bad the Razer Edge could have been much better received all thanks to Razer's very very poor handling. They sold us a severly unoptimized product(Performance Mode control, lack of Desktop Mode UI, missing controller functions due to outdated FW, and FAT32 external storage support only just to name a few). Its as if no one in Razer was paying attention to their own product let alone their competitors' in the mobile space at least. No wonder they didn't catch that spec sheet "typo". Even worse, that $25 gift card joke wasn't even funny! Truly unfortunate.
I think that the Edge should have been made to be better in every way than an Android flagship phone making a strong use case for it. As it is, it is now a budget alternative to a flagship phone, the problem being that eveyrone already needs a smartphone.
I agree. If some phone manufacturer starts to manufacture a phone with magnetic controller attachments at the top and bottom - ala PiMax Portal then it will start to get interesting. Good to see that it's easily serviceable though especially when replacing the battery.
Man thank you for covering this. This has been the most unbiased and fair reviews out there for this device. Despite all the drama and marketing lies, my biggest issue is why there arent other bigger tech channels addressing both Razer and Qualcomm about this. It has been strangely quiet on the bigger channels but you know what? You covered it and you did a great job doing so. Thank you for that, I guess they didnt care to give this device the time of day or they didnt get their own review sample. Excellent review regardless.
You will get a bit more power with the Edge but the Odin Pro is no slouch and does have the nice 16:9 aspect ratio display which is a bit more ideal for emulation. Either way, both are great!
I have to say that despite the rocky Odin launch, their support for the system has been stellar with updates. They know who their audience is. I don't expect anything less from Odin 2 that will improve on already great device. I'm hoping they blow us out of the water and also offer the XR2 with active cooling.
The whole idea of a separate controller attached to a tablet makes lots of sense and gives amazing versatility to the device. But Razer has to improve certain things. The tablet must be at 7"+ inches (8'' like the PS portal would be amazing) otherwise as many viewers said, you can use your phone instead. In that size there is a valid reason to use the Razer instead of your phone and also to use the tablet for other content consumption. It would make perfect sense and I would buy one tomorrow as with one purchase I would have a tablet, a gaming console and a controller to use with my phone when I don't wanna carry the edge around.
Good luck to all other entrants! I actually really like that the edge is a kind of convertible handheld. There are a few times where I'd just like to have a tablet that's smaller than something like an iPad (and also still android) but bigger than my phone. I do definitely wish it was a slightly different aspect ratio though haha. it also makes it an interesting super pocketable device for when you just want to play a visual novel without draining the battery of your actual phone.
Hey! I actually purchased this and hopefully we'll receive it soon. I'm very much enjoying cloud-based gaming and I have the logic check. G. Cloud but I really like the Wi-Fi 6 option. Keep up the great work.
Happy to see the review. I think despite the controversies, the edge offers great price to performance. Having a flagship phone still makes this a hard sell. Maybe someone stuck on iOS or a lower end android phone or handheld would find great value in the edge.
It really is in a space that a lot of other handhelds aren't and it is exciting but also sad; really hoping to see a G3X Gen 2 Android gaming device by 2024. For now the Razer is the way to go for high-end emulation barring a flagship phone.
So, I am looking for an Android handheld that can do Android gaming via Google Play (or Amazon for that matter) and also have emulation up PS2. Would you recommend this device, or perhaps try and catch something like the Logitech G Cloud on sale, or what for upcoming devices like the Ayaneo Pocket Air? Thanks as any advice is appreciated.
If you're looking for really capable PS2 performance (as in no tweaking needed) the Razer Edge is definitely a good fit for that. I'd say it's a matter of your budget but the WiFi Edge still offers a good value at $399 with the Kishi. The G Cloud is probably my favorite handheld in terms of ergonomics, it's just satisfying to play on and the screen is really nice and large with that 16:9 aspect ratio. It's fantastic at cloud/local game streaming and can play Google Play games without much issue. PS2 performance will be slightly better than something like the Retroid Pocket 3+. In terms of what's coming up, we have the Pimax Portal which will have the Snapdragon XR2 (similar to a Snapdragon 865) and all we know about the Aya Pocket is to not expect it to be a powerhouse.
@33:45" - One wacky use of the ultrawide I'd like to see tested is Android split-screen apps. 4:3 emulation on the left and a strategy guide on the right! PLEX streaming media splitscreen with an RPG on the side to grind! ...Local multiplayer splitscreen?
Indeed... Another mobile gaming option... Razer Edge + GameSir X-4 Aileron Bluetooth/Wireless Controller... Awesome Device but the whole pricing and ram ordeals got people turned away... 12 or 16gb ram + a better fan system needed... 🧐🤓
Newegg had this on sale for 230$.. Amazon also has it for 250$$ at this price it's a steal for a dedicated android handheld. I just picked it up so far so good been using it for warzone mobile and genshin. I don't care much for streaming and have not bothered to but the time into getting emulation running maybe later down the road.
Awesome detailed review! I hope you can do the same type of review when the Redmagic 8 Pro comes out - including the teardown. I'm torn between this and the Redmagic 8 Pro + Backbone One for Android because I don't like the curved screen corners of the Razer Edge.
Thank you, much appreciated! 🙏Yes, definitely will be covering the RM8 Pro. It actually arrived today! I can't promise a teardown, but I will try to be as thorough as possible. 🤗
What emulators do you recommend? I mainly want 2ds/3ds and GameCube games. I tried dolphin but talk about a headache. You got any how tos or tutorials?
2DS - Drastic (on the Play Store) 3DS - Citra MMJ (this you can get from Google and sideload) Gamecube - Dolphin (on the Play Store) - best version with the Razer Edge What issues are you having with Dolphin? For a nice performance boost, I recommend going into Graphic Settings > Hacks > and checking off "Skip EFB Access from CPU".
@@retrotechdad I was having issues with the edge opening the roms, my silly self didn’t extract them. Any recommendations as far as an unziper? Or do you guys just recommend downloading them on my computer and transferring them?
The Razer Edge is more powerful and certainly more portable. However, there isn't really anything like the Legion Y700 and it's pretty much the best 8" Android tablet.
I do find it disappointing that the G3X Gen 1 is an 888 equivalent and not an 8 Gen 1 equivalent. Given when it was announced, the year+ delay between announcement and release, and the fact that no benchmarks were given or any info on its performance, it almost feels deceptive on Razer’s and Qualcomm’s part. Why did they use the naming scheme that began with the 8 Gen 1 if this is actually based on previous generation SoC? Just disappointing honestly.
Almost bought this because I was excited with the advancements of the Skyline emulator. Then I sat down and realize it was pretty much just going to used for ultrawide stretched sonic mania.
This thing confuses me. Why can't the 5G version make phone calls? And I really wish the controller were permanently attached, especially given that it's explicitly *not* a phone. The whole thing feels kinda half-baked. I do want to add that I am 100% okay with bezels. I like being able to hold a phone without accidentally touching the edge of the screen.
Only time ive ever said i wish i had vorizon. Kinda didnt like this upon release. Until I realized it can merge my work and light cloud gaming tablet that isnt tied to my always ringing phone and isnt the best. And my phone which streams games great but is always ringing. 👌
It's great to see that the market has options for this handheld devices. Some people might prefer a dedicated device like the edge for gaming on the go. But in my case, I really think that if you have a fairly recent phone you just need an external controller and are ready to play comfortably.
great review man! excellent non bias experience. i was interested in this but the snapdragon cpu is already almost 2 yrs old basicially an over clocked 888 not worth 400 bucks i'll stick with picking up a oneplus 11 with a controller attachment.
Thank you, much appreciated! 🙏 I think it's a smart choice to go with something more future proof that has the SD 8 Gen 2 in it. I'm curious to see what the price of the Oneplus 11 ends up being.
@@retrotechdad I'm gonna say 800 for 128 900 for 256 I have the 10 pro but I love upgrading yearly on my carrier which is very easy if you pay off half the phone then all you have to do is pay the taxes on the new phone the next year and you can upgrade and start paying the new phone. I'm excited for the new cameras the new LTPOs 3.0 screen 100 watt charging and of course the eight gen two I hear is amazing especially when it comes to battery life for gaming compared to the Gen 1
Idk if I'm old or something, but when I see the name, Razer Edge it reminded of the tablet PC with the weird controller attachment. Edit: I just googled Razer Edge tablet. Apparently it was also named Razer Edge. So I was not mistaken. 😅
Nice review. It looks decent but kind of expected a little more. The rounded scree corners are also an odd choice. Actually has sort of made me pleased about the decision I made to skip this device and get a phone. Here in the UK its not available yet so I ended up getting a Lenovo Legion y70 SD gen 1 gaming phone from AliExpress and paired with a game sir x2 pro the price was around the same ($400). No active cooling but does have a vapour chamber and performance has been great so far, pus you have all phone features etc.
It won't work on anything because the Nexus app for the Razer Edge doesn't support it yet, one of my biggest complaints about the device as of right now.
hey. you mentioned custom adreno drivers for skyline 30:00 are you able to explain that a little more? also thank you for the super in depth video, this is perfect for anyone looking to decide whether to buy this handheld
18:44 the thing is it could be partly cpu z had not updated the library for the latest chipset configurations, i actually met with similar issues on cpu z on my xperia 1 iv, when it was just released their readout on the was entirely wrong.
Great review! I like the form factor and the tablet option (Netflix and Chill). I already have the Steam Deck 512GB which I like also. Had a Razer Phone 2, but the battery bulged and it died. Replaced it with a Microsoft Surface Duo (not good for gaming). Your review helped me decide to try the Razer Edge. Decided to get the 5G version from Verizon at only $10/mo and about $250 promo discounts. Congrats on the 3K sub. Does that Kishi V2 work well with a Samsung S22 Ultra?
How you feel 8 months later about the edge? Every video I have encounter are about 8 month old and can't seem to find any video with how it looks now. Do u prefer the steam deck or the edge is as good to own for a portable gaming?
My girl just got me the razor edge but now that im researching about seems like it would be better to get something else as a portable device. Can i pm you for help?
I agree with others about the price. But... if I had it to spend, I probably would, especially for a 5G one lol. The screen looks great and I think it'll be super competitive if they get their proprietary software stuff figured out.
I was going to buy the razer edge but I’m glad that I didn’t as it’s an android device and based on my experience I’m glad I went with the steam deck over the razer as I already have an android handheld and I’m not a big fan of it
I really did like the Razer Edge, but I felt out of principle I had to return the Edge after the bad response to us who thought we'd be getting 8GB of RAM. Either way, it's a fantastic device and if you plan on getting one then please enjoy it! It also had the lowest streaming latency I've tested.
I guess the price/performance for the 6gb version is ok, but the 8gb version is a no Go. I've paid 530usd for a xiaomi 12s with 256gb and a gen1+. Awesome reviews as always, your Review of the xp+ helped me decide on it
THE SUBWAY IS REAL. The Edge is a weird device to me. It doesn't do much to differentiate itself from a phone + controller experience, while not having the functionality of a phone. It lacks the purpose built and integrated feel of other handhelds like the Odin or Retroid. It clearly isn't aimed at the emulation scene, with it's funky aspect ratio and bezels, but also doesn't make much sense for the mobile game crowd considering it launched without screen mapping. It seems like a good product in a vacuum (once they patch nexus at least), but it feels like they didn't really do any research on the market at all. It manages to be a nice piece of kit that is a fair value if you are specifically looking for Android, but despite that it doesn't feel like it's actually aimed at any target market. Either way I'm glad to see more attention brought to the handheld market, and hopefully Razer stands behind the Edge to see it succeed. I do think Razer could be a meaningful mainstream portal into the handheld space, and an Edge 2 could be great with the things they learn from this.
I like the Xbox style layout. Was there a 3.5mm headphone jack?. First the confusion on the Ram on the WiFi model and then the Mysterious G3xGen1 matching the performance of the 888+... Very interesting communication from Razer's Supplier to marketing. I'm interested in the performance between the kishiV2 and the one with rumble. Thanks for your video Dad lol. Congrats on the 3k, here's to a big 2023 for you
The Edge really is compelling with the SD card slot, power offered for the price, and the active cooling. It's inherently imperfect due to it not being a fully integrated handheld, but then again you can use it as a tablet like you mentioned. Nothing will be perfect, so for the time being I think it's decent enough for what it is. That being said the 6GB bait and switch is terrible lol
ngl the TOF thumbnail made me click on this video XD the Edge is a pretty interesting device for what it is, although it would definitely be overshadowed by other Android phones that can do as much gaming/emulation imo
I do agree, I am actually testing the RedMagic 8 Pro as a "dedicated' gaming handheld and for a little more than the 5G version of the Edge, it just blows it away.
You're very welcome, thanks for watching! I've read more about the draining issue and apparently this has to do more with Android still feeding power to anything connected via USB C.
Kind of unrelated, and not sure if you've already done it but I would like to know more about android game ports, especially unofficial ones even if they require game data from a PC install. The idea just randomly popped up when you were talking about android ports. The edge is definitely an interesting device tho, I don't regret refunding it, but I think there is a lot of potential in the package that you get. Whatever you figure out is cool on the edge will work for all of us with other similar devices as well.
What do you think about the Razer Edge?
Bait and switch had me returning it. I'll wait for the next iteration when they improve every shortcoming.
@@alvinbalatbat Same. Feel shat on.
Interesting but not the Ultimate Gaming Handheld for Android. Especially with the Odin Pro and upcoming Pimax Portal coming out.

I can't wait to play some gamecube on this
GC will perform beautifully on the Edge!
Idk if I'm old or something, but when I see the name, Razer Edge it reminded of the tablet PC with the weird controller attachment.
Edit: I just googled Razer Edge tablet. Apparently it was also named Razer Edge. So I was not mistaken. 😅
It was my first thought as well. 🤣😅 I actually have the original Razer Edge in my collection!
How You Insert SD Card
Nice review. It looks decent but kind of expected a little more. The rounded scree corners are also an odd choice. Actually has sort of made me pleased about the decision I made to skip this device and get a phone. Here in the UK its not available yet so I ended up getting a Lenovo Legion y70 SD gen 1 gaming phone from AliExpress and paired with a game sir x2 pro the price was around the same ($400). No active cooling but does have a vapour chamber and performance has been great so far, pus you have all phone features etc.
Yes, I think many will take a look at this and instead end up pairing a phone with their controller attachment of choice.
I can't get the virtual controller to work on anything
It won't work on anything because the Nexus app for the Razer Edge doesn't support it yet, one of my biggest complaints about the device as of right now.
Is Eastward finally playable on Skyline?
Ooooh, good call! I need to try this one again. 💗
@@retrotechdad I'll wait for the Windows version to have a significant discount. Paying $25 for a Digital Copy of a game is a Scam to me. 😕
I'd love to pass down the controller attachment to one of my boys to play using his phone
Looks good to me. Might pick this up from Verizon.
hey. you mentioned custom adreno drivers for skyline 30:00 are you able to explain that a little more? also thank you for the super in depth video, this is perfect for anyone looking to decide whether to buy this handheld
18:44 the thing is it could be partly cpu z had not updated the library for the latest chipset configurations, i actually met with similar issues on cpu z on my xperia 1 iv, when it was just released their readout on the was entirely wrong.
Great video -- this thing is an emulation beast!
Could you tell me settings for PS2 black , wide screen hack ? Vulcan ?
How You Download The PS2 Emulator Aethersx2 Or Nintendo GameCube Emulator Dolphin
Thanks for this very informative video. I'm definitely going to get one.
I'm glad the video was helpful! 🙏
Too bad that the USB c is on the right, it does not match Samsung z fold 😢
If you're looking for a controller attachment with the USB C on the left, check out the original Gamesir X2.
10 a month and another 80+ for the 5g network.
How you feel 8 months later about the edge? Every video I have encounter are about 8 month old and can't seem to find any video with how it looks now. Do u prefer the steam deck or the edge is as good to own for a portable gaming?
Wait does it not have a headphone jack?
On the phone itself not the controller?
this or retroid pocket 4 pro??
My girl just got me the razor edge but now that im researching about seems like it would be better to get something else as a portable device. Can i pm you for help?
My Samsung S21 fe can emulate about the same games. I have the Gamesir x2 pro though.
Do you notice the same battery drain issue if you leave the Gamesir x2 Pro connected to your S21 overnight?
@@peejae082004 Since it is my phone I don't leave it in there after a gaming session. During gaming the drain is negligible.
I agree with others about the price. But... if I had it to spend, I probably would, especially for a 5G one lol. The screen looks great and I think it'll be super competitive if they get their proprietary software stuff figured out.
I'm hoping they do roll out updates, I will be paying very close attention!
Nowhere to find what’s game list can use by handcontrol.
Somewhat surprised at the small 5000mlh battery size.
Razer's handling of the whole situation was incredibly poor. 😒
Geese don't need RAM.
If Untitled Goose Game has taught me anything, they will steal your RAM. 🦢
YES!!
Great review, better than RGC bc of the teardown and the CPU/GPU analysis. We like that extra techny nerd $hittt 😄Thank you sir 🙏
This is such an awesome device!
Thank you for this detailed review.
Thank you for watching and commenting! 🙏
Might get one in the future
What a disappointment with the battery, I don't see much difference to a smartphone with a joystick, I'm going for the gpd xp plus
GPD XP+ has insane battery life, definitely check out my video on it!🙏
@@retrotechdad I saw it before this one, your videos are very good, you do battery and emulator performance tests, that's why I subscribed
Thanks for doing grams too
Congrats! the Edge looks cool but not so sure when I can get a steam deck for the same price 🤷♂️
For sure, it's great to have so many options! 🙏
Agreed, Razer handled the whole thing poorly.
Oooooo well Razer Edge look cool but however it could be better
💯Agree
Another banger video dude never misses 💯
Amazing video as always, thank you TRTD!
Idk if its the form factor the "tablet" or what but this thing just isn't doing it for me.
this review is excellent
Thank you, I'm glad older videos are still helping out! 🤗
¿Razer Edge Or Pimax Portal?
ngl the TOF thumbnail made me click on this video XD the Edge is a pretty interesting device for what it is, although it would definitely be overshadowed by other Android phones that can do as much gaming/emulation imo
I do agree, I am actually testing the RedMagic 8 Pro as a "dedicated' gaming handheld and for a little more than the 5G version of the Edge, it just blows it away.
Thanks for the video, it gave me the answer i was looking for. That damned controller still drains battery while in standby. DOA è_é
You're very welcome, thanks for watching! I've read more about the draining issue and apparently this has to do more with Android still feeding power to anything connected via USB C.
Hello, friend. Thank you for the good video.
Could you post the disassembly method of Logitech G Cloud?
I'm desperately looking for it. T_T
I got you! Look for a disassembly in an upcoming video with the Logitech. 😉
Huge Bezels almost makes it feel like you're being cheated
