Hey, one of Faithful's managers here. Faithful has been probably one of the largest victims of Marketplace product theft. Our case is an unfortunate one as we took a long delay of time to recover contact with Vattic (original creator of Faithful) to finally sort this all out. Some of us weren't even in the community before we tried to regain contact. Ever since our case got exposed, numerous other questionable products were highlighted on the marketplace. Covering this topic is always great to see. I can't even begin to outline all of the problems we have been having with Mojang, particularly with its apparent refusal to cut ties with its creators when they are knowingly and willingly causing trouble for financial gain. It's a really shitty situation to deal with.
As someone who has made a good few skins, I am sickened by the amount of stolen skins on the marketplace. Ive actually found one of the skins I use on some random bedrock skin pack before
I made a map for the marketplace once, was a ton of work for only a tiny return, decided to focus on TH-cam instead where I have more control over my content. edit: microsoft takes about 70% really, and of that remaining 1/3, part is taken by the publisher and a part is taken by the company you partnered with, and if you make a taxable amount of money from that, the federal goverment will take 1/2 of whatever is left of that so me as the map creator got perhaps 7 cents from a 99 cent map. you can see why I decided not to work for 3 months publish a second one.
Wow, they really need to get some shit in to legally protect us creators, because this joke of a payment should never ever be allowed to exist, not even people working for scrip long ago got paid this low
It was, it is and it will be always about money. Even if they own billions of dollars it would be still not enough for them. It is just pathetic, disgusting and disappointing how Marketplace is destroying the reputation of Minecraft Bedrock Edition
@@Hue_Sam same as Windows, Microsoft Office and etc. It is overpriced software! Especially when you can use free and open source alternatives such as Only Office, GNU/Linux
Honestly though, I thought that the creators got the lion's share of the money not the other way around. The fact that Microsoft rakes in most of the profits off of Marketplace content combined with their lack of care for stolen content really reinforces the belief that the Marketplace was mostly designed just to be a cash grab.
They own the game. If creators wanted a bigger cut, they can develop their own game. The majority of EULAs for games forbid a creator from making any money at all from add-on/mod development. Anyone creating for Java edition does it for free, and there is plenty of outside sources to get free bedrock content from as well. The rates don't surprise me at all, look at Robloxs split, or the rampant copyright infringement lol... Twitch even gives it's streamers a 70/30 cut just for providing the service while the streamers do all the work pulling in subs.. These videos are a bit over the top and over dramatized imo
@@Adam-uu5pt Do you think your boss should take 62.5 percent of your paycheck, and not even give you so much as a paystub? For what, just hosting a content creation platform? @@Adam-uu5pt Do you just not understand this or something? Microsoft is getting MORE MONEY by simply publishing the map compared to the people who put their hard work into it. Sure, they own the game but in no way does that make any of this acceptable. These videos are perfectly displaying the dark nature underneath the marketplace.
Little extra info for the bad internet since TheMisterEpic has good internet. When failed to login (game logs you out after a short while once bad/no internet), the worlds you have played on (that are marketplace content), with have a lock symbol beside it. Attempting to open the world, brings up "Purchase world Template?" screen
Okay, this enrages me. I've been raised to know that if I have to have a constant internet connection to play a game, I should never play it, and this is just fuel for the fire right there.
The fact that "the player is not allowed to feel bad" is just... such a bad rule. I don't wanna be that guy, but when society tries to curate things to the point where all negative feelings are not supposed to occur, that is an incredibly toxic environment. Did they seriously not think about the deeper implications of this? I mean, sure, this is just some stupid little map in a block game. But its part of a wider, rather disturbing trend. Sad to see that Mojang too has hopped on that one.
@@flow185 it’s a disturbing trend. Just because it was noticed in a silly block game doesn’t mean it isn’t concerning. This is also happening on TH-cam and other social media sites as well. Everything needs to be censored and non-offensive as to appease the advertisers.
Microsoft's cut on all sales for the marketplace rate was what caught me off guard the most. I did not expect it to be so significantly that bad. This is why we can't have one version of Minecraft. I would be afraid of things like this going on to Java edition and being forced upon everyone. Thank you for this video as it spreads more awareness about how broken the system is
Thats why its important to curate and aknowledge Minecraft developer edition's existance. Most marketplace items are made using developer edition of Minecraft. There are so many features that a bedtock player could dream of.
Yeah the cut is quite bad, but at least its not as bad as Roblox... After all the math a dev on Roblox only makes 12.25% from purchase of the Robux to DevEx. IMO the industry standard for any User Generated Content based system provided by the game/market developer should be at minimum 50/50 of course it should be way more but good luck with that.
Fun fact: due to app store fees the developers are actually taking more than Microsoft from the transaction when people buy it on mobile. (Apple/Google 30%, MS 32.5%, Developer 37.5%) Of course this does not change the developer's situation, and I still think Microsoft is still taking way more than it should. And if you buy any marketplace goods on Windows/Xbox then Microsoft WILL take the full 62.5% cut, which is ridiculous.
I do marketplace work as a contractor for teams. the first team I worked with was absolutely trash. I was young at the time and very new to it all, so I just went with it. they kept asking me to share my ideas for the map, design game mechanics, & plan out a story. they kept telling me "Oh yeah we've got a build team on it", and things like that. I spent quite a few days on this and they never paid me or even followed up afterwards.
@@GaemingStudios nope, because of the more open nature of Java, people can easily get access to older versions, so even if newer versions started to become MTX-Filled, people can still get older versions and play them with no problems, and even if the Launcher removed older versions, people have them archived and third-party launchers exist and thus it just wouldn't affect you if you want to get rid of something. access to older versions is easy
9:07 Keep in mind that on some platforms the app stores already take 30%. So on Android for example 30% goes to Google, 32.5% goes to Microsoft and 37.5% goes to the third party. Edit: math
I don't thinks that's how it would work unless android (or others) are taking a cut of every single microtransaction sold on any app they put on their store. The Minecraft marketplace is independent from androids app store so there's no reason they would get the cut, so it probably all goes to Microsoft. Either that or they'd take a cut on the purchase of minecoin (whatever the currency is called) through the app store but not a cut from somebody purchasing a world or skin.
As someone who has played on bedrock for several years the market place seems like a very manipulative shop and with everyone wearing skins from the item shop it acts like some sort of peer pressure to get a skin
Thank you for your good journalism! Even as a Java player, I feel like the marketplace taints the image of the game as a whole and is completely antithetical to the spirit of user created content for the game. I really hope there can be change!
And this is why I will always be a java player. I've always seen the ability to create your own player skin as a foundational part of the game, and even if mine arent as good as some of the stuff youll find online I've always liked playing with a skin I made myself. Even ignoring all the other stuff jammed into or carved out of the game, that by itself is already basically a dealbreaker for me.
I think cause the game is so focused for kids nowadays due to its really easy access for every platform. That angry moms could launch an attack or smth lol
@@rainbowflash5937 I get that, but stories have conflict, drama, and morals. It’s literally impossible to tell a good story that makes the listener feel good all throughout.

The marketplace easily has to be one of the things I loathe about the direction Minecraft has gone in since the buyout happened. It's difficult to have genuine soul in something when there's a profit motive to be had.
Shock. Outrage. Etc. Meanwhile, Spotify cuts are literally fractions of a penny per stream. Musicians make most of their money from touring. Streaming is the biggest way music is consumed today, and yet musicians get barely a fraction of the cut from streaming. Streaming income is essentially meaningless for a musician. What I'm getting from all this: all creators are consistently getting screwed, while distributors are taking the majority of the cut. It's worse today than it ever was before.
Dang, you weren't kidding when you said that the Minecraft marketplace is dark. I thought Roblox stealing 30% of your earnings was the worst but it seems that I was wrong. I feel bad for the creators who work really hard on their maps, to only find out that 70% of their earnings get taken away.
I have a feeling that the marketplace contributes to bedrocks lack of polish. Since java edition's revenue mainly comes from game sales, the java devs focus more on making the game as polished as possible. But bedrock's main source of income is the marketplace, so instead of polishing the main game, they focus on taking money from other people's work and make it more lucrative to sell trashy bootleg content that appeals to kids.
I don't even travel far from my base because traveling somewhere or entering the Nether can cause nametagged mobs to disappear. It's something to do with loading chunk-related stuff that when a mob is between two chunks when it reloads, it will despawn. Because there is no command in Bedrock to view chunks, we can't do anything to put those mobs with nametags inside a chunk to prevent this from happening.
If you think about it while I'd Assume Java sells worse than Bedrock as its available literally everywhere, Java on the other hand has a huge Internet following than Bedrock, The developers want to try to keep Java as good as it currently is. And I assume they wanna do the same for Bedrock. But Microsoft has a much tighter grip to bedrock I assume they get in the way alot.
Java would be the middle child for Mojang since it brings no money in except for realms, it is probably only still being developed so that they don't have to do anything with the java devs
Im half tempted to take what im learning from my schooling about web design and make a website for market place creators that is specifically for bedrock players to upload worlds mod packs skin packs texture packs and make it accessible on xbox and PlayStation in time to remove the corruption of market place by making it community owned and ran
@@thefongz2931 you can do it in the game though its more limited than online skin creators. Go to "dressing room", "edit character" then "character creator". There's still a lot of paid content but some things can be unlocked for free or with achievements. Its limited (and you need an internet connection to access the dressing room) but it does exist and I've been able to put together 2 skins that I like with only free/achievement stuff
Great job! It's about time someone exposed how shady the marketplace is on bedrock. The great thing about java Minecraft is all custom content is free and directly from the players creating it.
The drama with the community creators reminds me of how I was banned from Warcraft; a corrupt GM re-opened my account when I closed it temporarily and was actively trying to sell my characters, would have never found out if my old raid guild hadnt been keeping an eye out for me to come back. Going through Accounts and Billing, they kept trying to deny anything shady was going on and maybe one of my friends had re-activated my account for me, then admitting the credit card was stolen and getting really evasive about how my account had been re-opened. When I demanded the card be reported as stolen, my account was permanently locked. Any query as to why has always had vauge responses as to why it was closed and I cant re-access my games. Sounds like those guys got hired by Microsoft.
I knew it was bad, but I didn't realize it was _this_ bad. Saying "oh yeah we assume they have the proper copyright permissions" and then taking over half the profit shouldn't be allowed. There's no way this should be legal.
"Information which if shared, would likely result in the Marketplace being terminated." I'd share it in a heartbeat. No way in hell Mojang is going to fix it anytime soon. To quickly elaborate, Mojang and Microsoft obviously know the current issues since they also appear to be causing most of them but are too money hungry to care. It's time to take action. Plenty videos similar to this go viral but they still don't seem to care. Rather than complaining about everything wrong with the game, shine the spotlight on Mojang and properly call them out.
Honestly not even surprised, Mojang is just acting like any other big company these days. I'm honestly quite surprised its taken people this long to recognize the transformation, although to be fair its only become noticeable in the past 5 or so years.
@@iwitas Probably a Microsoft decision to add micro transactions to bedrock, I dont think Mojang would be this corrupt when it came to the Marketplace.
I find it funny how the marketplace doesn't allow military themed things yet in the official skin pack 5 from the original console editions they is over 10 military themed skins all based off real life factions.
The way marketplace creators are treated by Microsoft kind of reminds me of the debacle that was going on with the Roblox company, and how they would market that you can "earn serious cash" by monetizing your content, only for the creators to barely earn anything
As someone who had their textures sold within the unofficial Faithful pack on the Marketplace without knowledge for a long time and received little support when it came to my attention, I’m disgusted by Microsoft and the Marketplace. The amount of creators who have been wronged by the pathetic system Microsoft has put in place is unacceptable.
Marketplace is really screwed up, it just feels like nfts lol Also, some years ago a guy wasn't like, selling the 16x16 texture pack on marketplace without the original creator permission or something?
skin packs are pointless- when the fact on bedrocks mineplex dosent let you use your owne skin packs and just overights it into there owne one, -i think you have to pay the server for you to use your owne skin?
I had that issue once with a my own imported skin on The HIve. Apparently, if the bottom layer is transparent (even if the top layer isn't), one of their store skins will replace yours. Some years ago, the skin that I was using randomly stopped working one day (being replaced by one of The Hive's skins), so I had to troubleshoot by changing skins while actually on the server (as opposed to setting the skin in Minecraft's main menu, then joining the server). Doing this gave me a nice pop-up saying something like "your skin is illegal", so I fixed the skin by dumping the color gray on the entire bottom skin layer, and "reported" the issue to The Hive. You seeing this exact effect on another server might mean two things: 1. It's an interface made by Mojang that the server can use to stop "illegal" skins, and 2. Mojang have not fixed it for years. To be fair though, my skin image was out of the normal convention, but the bottom layer's transparent pixels could have been rendered fully black like how full blocks with transparent textures (supplied by a resource pack) render fully black, or by how the Java Edition renders the bottom layer of skins black even if they are transparent.
10:45 Actually non-disclosure agreements are a common thing for any tech company, they probably have other things to hide other tham stuff that everyone hides but it's not very concerning
i remember that Marketplace had some hint of original content, like the Secret Present Survival by Jigarbov (same with Minecon Earth) or even freaking Glitch Runners was really original
This is so sad 😭. As a bedrock player I'm fine with the marketplace but not with Microsoft's decisions on how to maintain the marketplace. I hope they fix this issue. Btw love your content, keep up the great work!
Btw it's not Microsoft it's Mojang The no sharks pr person said that everything is Mojang's choice, they chose to become money hungry, yes minecoins too This is consistent with other Microsoft owned companies that keep their automany like Rareware who chose no more Banjo and Kazooie
A lot of content that i've gotten in the past has stopped working now because of minecraft updates, but you CAN STILL BUY THEM. So you could spend around $10 on a broken map, and you wouldn't even know it was broken until after you bought it. For example: the bedrock FTB Stoneblock map has broken conveyor belts, making it impossible to automate some things, I reported this bug to the devs months ago and it still hasn't been fixed. Edit: The Stoneblock map has been fixed :)
Sometimes they are slow on removing broken content. Also it just beocmes unlisted so you can still access it anyways. There is a fix for you to make the map work again (pc only). Downgrade to an older version that you know the map works on (can be done using the program MCLaucher). Also fixes have to go through a review process just like if it was a new content item
7:28 holy shit this is the Xbox One all over again where it didn't even let you play games if you couldn't connect to online or failed to have a Kinect plugged in.
Lowkey makes me want to run an experiment just to see how much one can make via machinegunning stolen content in the marketplace. Also see if there are any outside authorities that could be made to take action against such practices.
Please don't. I know one of those partners that are considered high quality content on the marketplace. People who try to wiggle their way in to make a quick buck are destorying the good people. No one knows how or why the people stealing got in. It didn't used to be that way for them.
@@ohhello937 I wouldn't put in the effort, but even if I did, Minecraft is in shambles right now anyway because of Mojang/Microsoft themselves. I don't think doing that would make much of a difference.
Banning people from discussing income is actually illegal under Washington state labor laws (a rare win for workers in the US), where Microsoft is headquartered. So is not sharing salary information before signing. Point is Microsoft are aware of how bad these practices are and aren't allowed to do that with many of their regular employees, but have no problem doing it to Marketplace creators
I would be in full support if mod makers started their own Patreon or some place to donate, so we can fund their development without any censorship and better cut of their work. In fact, let me just straight up buy mods from them for Java.
Problem is, no one will support them then. Java modders have patreons and places to donate already but everyone just wants their work for free. Then they are upset when the modders don't update things because they can't make a living off it. The reason marketplace works is that it actually provides money. It forces you to support the modder/artists. Look how many people say they "hate bedrock" because they can just get free stuff on java and not support the modders or artists.
@@ohhello937 yeah. People make money on marketplace but literally still no one used them. Like 92% of bedrock player never used them so... Yeah basically low earning actually.
@@alvinmokhram You’re completely wrong though. There are full game dev teams that run off the bedrock. If they can run a whole team of people full time, that’s not “low earnings” and no one using bedrock. It just proves if people paid modders in Java they’d get cooler stuff and more updates.
After I heard they take 62.5% that was enough for me. Most all businesses take a 30% cut and ironically Microsoft only takes a 12% cut for game sales on the windows store. A 30% cut is quite steep and it really shouldn't be higher but if needed (such as in TH-cams case) it should only be as high as 45%.
Thanks for sharing this! I've been making Minecraft content for years and almost every time I worked for a team they've screwed me over. I've also been blocked by MC Devs for calling them out for stealing and selling skin on the Market We've got to keep this energy going and hope Microsoft will see and change! I'm tired of seeing my friends' work get sold for profit
It's clear that video games that have paid incentives are bound to fail. Creation Club, Last Bullet and the Minecraft Marketplace are just failures in that they promote themselves as paying modders but it's suspicious and scummy just for good PR
Yeah and That Recent Chat Report System coming to Java definitely was Microsoft other way of keeping its public image "Positivity with no negativity, this report system will keep all the little timmies from being bullied." And what is this about "The Player can't feel bad in maps, Theyll cry and we'll get sued", are they saying people can't feel other emotions but happiness and unicorns and rainbows. What is this preschool?
We kill monsters all the time in the main game. What's different about killing an NPC and feeling bad for them. Not everything in Sunshine and Rainbows, Certain Stories need some sort of Drama.
@@rickygamingproductions It's even funnier when you realize that while you can't call them names without being reported, you can instead go completely silent and just destroy their buildings, kill their wolves, cats and other animals, destroy their crops, build questionable buildings in their stead (like "That" symbol, Male Reproductive Organs, etc), harass them through signs and kill them endlessly and you can't be reported for that, which is much more hurtful to others than just calling them names as you're actually impacting their gameplay and directly making them not have fun.

This all "stolen content" is actually kind of complicated, specially for skins. Lets say that I make a bot that is able to make and upload to some accounts every possible minecraft skin that can ever be made. From that moment I have some kind of "rights" over any skin that was made by my bot and anyone else can't sell this skins on the marketplace anymore? It seems kinda bizarre to me, am I right?
This and the previous video only taught me one thing about the bedrock marketplace thing by locking out the open community interaction for cross platform play they made the perfect place to scam kids out of their parents money nothing easier than stealing candy from a baby or something like that
9:06 Paradox Interactive was always greedy, most recent drama is that they already sell pre order packs for game Victoria 3 that include "One free DLC", they don't even wait for the release of game and already annouce DLCs that would make game playable
4:27 although a lot of those were definitely copied, a lot of them were also just similar concepts that are bound to look similar since they are just following common ideas; like the clown or the caveman. No clue how there’s anything related with the bikini ones, though?
62,5% is outrageous As already mentioned, steam takes 30%, but if your total revenue reaches 10 million it's 25% and 50 million it's 20% Epic game takes 12% 62,5% is far too high, microsoft must think that they are more important than they really are
They do not even do a good job checking the content they say they review the content yet blatent theft and copyright get in scot free and that is because it makes Microsoft a ton of money it is why they are so lax with it
One of the bigger implementatinal flaws the marketplace has is that if you click the "Buy" button you've immediately bought it with no confirmation. That's especially a problem on mobile devices with little lower CPU power as they can sometimes recognize a swipe up (attempt to scroll) as a click on the "Buy" button fit starts/ends on that button. Why don't they follow their typical M$ path of the user needing to confirm several times before continuing? You know, some say of M$ that if they built a car and that got into a crash you had to confirm three times to pop the airbag out...

The Minecraft market place is like to Roblox catalog with classic shirts, pants, and t-shirts it that it it's flooded with similar sometimes direct copies of content which ultimately ends up with the search function being boarder line useless and unless the marketplace can get it's act together it will simply end up in a state where it's basically impossible to fix due to just the sheer volume of the issue.
The marketplace was good when it first released, with content made by minecraft and previous skin packs, on top of pretty good maps and resource packs coming out for cheap. That lasted less than a year.
@@alvinmokhram when it first released it contained only official content which wasnt that bad, but that lured people into a false sense of security as they began to allow others to posts maps, and regulations began to decrease
Every unregulated marketplace of sorts will always be full of copy paste content, copyright content, and a lot of stolen content, which completely overshadow the actually great stuff. And most of the time I feel like its the corporate greed that it is unregulated, because they earn money, that's the only thing they care. This is also why i like java mods and other stuff like resource packs and stuff because none of it is behind a pay lock and the people who made those are great people as they made it out of passion and not greed
There are some things behind a paywall in Java modding stuff. Though only one that comes to mind is the ray tracing SEUS pack for a patreon tier mainly due to being in heavy development still.
I make massive maps that take a lot longer then I’d like to admit. I was heavily considering becoming a marketplace creator until I saw how shady it can get. I don’t want my content being censored, undervalued and stolen. I would much rather develop mods for Java after seeing this. Thank you for saving me from a huge headache ❤
Wanted to make something for the marketplace when I first heard about the ability to do so. But from the start I started hearing stories like this even back then. So i never finished and will not continue because it's getting worse. So the map had been sitting on my old hdd collecting dust for years now.
The reason Microsoft handles copyright that way is to avoid a lawsuit. If they checked everything, they'd be legally responsible if anything slipped through. It's the same way TH-cam works
What if we make our OWN marketplace? Not something like mcpedl though, cause that place sends kids to sketchy virus-covered ad pages. There needs to be a website that sells quality content and isn't controlled by Microsoft.
There's always going to be false negatives and false positives for copyright so i have a question. Would you rather have a copyright system like youtube or like minecraft marketplace? Because i lean towards the marketplace despite the flaws.
I understand your veiwpoint but the marketplace should be a tad better saying that it took a week for a minecraft developer to his own stolen content unlisted (you can still buy it if you have a link). Referring to the aether mod
You can make a video where you explain how to get a cape, because I was disappointed after translating 40% of the Sicilian language and I learned that it is no longer possible to obtain the Translator Cape and this disappointed me. I know this is old but a slight correction you can use whatever skin you want on Bedrock as well because you can import skins on PC and mobile they just put it out of the way in terms of UI to get kids to buy skins

Did they seriously not think about the deeper implications of this? I mean, sure, this is just some stupid little map in a block game. But its part of a wider, rather disturbing trend.
(Apple/Google 30%, MS 32.5%, Developer 37.5%)
Of course this does not change the developer's situation, and I still think Microsoft is still taking way more than it should. And if you buy any marketplace goods on Windows/Xbox then Microsoft WILL take the full 62.5% cut, which is ridiculous.

This is why i dont rly like games with in game stores incentives devs and modders push out buggy unpolished content for maximum profit
Minecraft bedrock isn't free tho, so the source income is not only from markeplace but also the base game you have to purchase just like java.
If you think about it while I'd Assume Java sells worse than Bedrock as its available literally everywhere, Java on the other hand has a huge Internet following than Bedrock, The developers want to try to keep Java as good as it currently is.
There's no way this should be legal.

skin packs are pointless- when the fact on bedrocks mineplex dosent let you use your owne skin packs and just overights it into there owne one, -i think you have to pay the server for you to use your owne skin?

If you have read the comment I am very happy and if I made a video about it I would be very happy, thanks.
Imagine having to pay for skins
I know this is old but a slight correction you can use whatever skin you want on Bedrock as well because you can import skins on PC and mobile they just put it out of the way in terms of UI to get kids to buy skins

Ignoring a DMCA take down request is grounds to sue under the DMCA. If the content is still up and no counter notification was received, the copyright holder has grounds to sue microsoft for not complying with the DMCA.
