Stress on "might". There is a higher probability that the guy just has a nervous breakdown for a week or two and then resumes his work to bring about a feeling of security through routine. @@proverbialking3452 Ptsd will break him, most likely. He'll never feel safe again. He'll have flashbacks, that same crippling fear coming back to haunt him again and again seemingly at random. Triggers you couldn't predict, like an ibuprofen bottle you'd seen the day of the incident later causes you to get a severe flashback when you're at the grocery store. Can't do basic things without something causing you to literally feel the barrel of the gun on the back of your head, just like the day it happened.

It's just a popular narrative. Like "bullying helps build character". It depends on the person. Some people do build a thicker skin and learn to stand up for themselves. While most just recede into a shell of doubt and insecurity.
