SAVING EVERTON | HOW TO PLAY FM23 as DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL | The Moneyball Way

- Ditch the FM23 match engine and play the game in a whole new way! In this series I'm going to show you how to play Football Manager as the Director of Football.
After two years in charge of Birmingham City, we take the reins at recently relegated Everton. It will be a long road back to the top but I'm making it my mission to take them all the way to the pinnacle of European Football.
And I'm doing it the hard way:
No match tactics
No team selection
No training
No team talks
All of that will be left to my staff because I am the Director of Football. Scouting, recruitment, data analysis, unearthing bargains and embedding a club DNA. That’s my job here.
And to help us move away from the financial precipice the club is currently leaning over, we will be applying the Nine Rules of Moneyball:
1. Promote youth ahead of transfers
2. Only buy players aged 20-25, with decent data sample size
3. Shop outside the usual markets - transfer listed and out of contract players, low reputation leagues
4. Improve defence before attack
5. Always improve the weakest area of the team first
6. Don't buy strikers unless absolutely necessary
7. Sell players at their peak age
8. Always be scouting for replacements
9. Sell any player if a club offers more than they are worth

Absolutely hooked on this, but how do you find a club to manage? Do they have to be looking for a director of football, or do you look for clubs appointment new first team managers? I don’t think Everton had sacked Lampard when you took them over, or did they? Thanks
Thank you! The Everton manager job was vacant and I applied as normal. I try to think of it as stepping in to completely change the culture of the club from top to bottom, like when Spurs brought in Paratici to appoint the Head coach a couple of years ago. But hopefully with better long term results 🙂
You need to look for vacant manager Jobs and apply, the You sack the director of football (so You don't play him salaries), if You can't then just delegate all task to You and ignore his advices
Yep, spot on. I've promised the chairman I'll work with the to current DoF, which means I have to keep him for 3 months. After that, he's gone!

Me too. I tried, and will try again before next episode, but Thomas won't come unless he can be assistant manager and Ben refuses to join Everton because of his history with Tranmere. I'm hoping to convince them otherwise!

I went into this episode thinking it would be half an hour but due to other commitments this week I couldn't get all the way through the transfer window without rushing, and it's crucial to get this one right All feedback very welcome though, and where it makes sense for an episode to be longer it definitely will be!

I’m gonna upvote the short form content here! Whilst it’s a great series, it’s way more easier to digest than say a Lollujo daily video that’s the same length. That’s the joy of all of these wonderful content creators, everyone’s different!!

Kirk, I think you're owning what is not yours. What do you care what Everton paid for old guys? You didn't buy them. To me, the ledger starts at zero when I take over so anyone I sell is pure profit. I tend to sell off every player over 27, every single season. I don't care how good you are, I'm all about youth (who provide the best profit upside).
I hear you, but given the clubs finances weren't in the best state I wanted to take previous purchases into account as well. Also, I think its totally fair to rage at the previous management teams ineptitude if they've overspent on a load of players past their peak 🤣
