  • In this tutorial I'll show you how to make a side by side layout to show two cameras on the screen for podcasts and interviews. This tutorial works with any ATEM Mini model, although it will be a bit easier to see what you're doing if you have the ATEM Mini Pro with Multiview.

    You can also use the side-by-side button on the Extreme, where DVE1 and DVE2 control which sources appear on the two windows, using the Select Bus Buttons.
    HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 are the default sources when dual picture in picture sources are enabled. DVE1 also controls the sources if a single PinP is selected.

    Love it too if the form factor of the atem mini extreme was as small as the atem mini pro. Maybe a stack up atem mini pro. Like having two atem mini pro. One on top and one below. Making it the atem mini extreme.. and not a long one which is a bit hard to bring. Anyways. Thanks for this!
    Really having a hard time learning all these with zoom, obs ,fb live and atem mini pro all together and incorporating it all at once..

    I spent 8-10 hours last week trying to recreate my OBS scenes into the ATEMs just to discover: ATEM Minis can only resize a single source on the screen! My main scene for my streaming’s is two people commenting over a shared browser window under an overlay :(
    I managed to get it working, more or less, chaining two ATEM mini inputs: one combines background plus pip, the second adds the second pip over the combined input. Then I realized that I would need to set companion to change scenes on both ATEMs at the same time... If I tried to switch the combined output to the program view, it would enter into negative video loop and degrade vastly the image.
    Your eCamm plus ATEM video was very useful in this regard, introducing the HDMI splitter. They are coming next week, and I think they will work nicely but so far... OBS streaming saved the day!
    So my current plan is using the Mini Pro ISO to record my courses and solo programs and OBS for any other content involving other people. It’s not very simple/possible to get Twitch like layouts and transitions with the ATEM Minis!

    • @aaronpk
      @aaronpk  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that's definitely one of the limiting aspects of the ATEM Mini! You can definitely do it chaining two ATEM Minis together, and thankfully Companion can send commands to both at the same time. But doing that kind of layout with remote guests is a lot more flexible in software switchers for sure.

    "Back in the day" this was accomplished using a wipe, and each person was framed to the sides of the shot -- one to the left, and the other to the right, and the wipe was stopped at 50%. Doing this, you don't use your key. The downside is that since the ATEM is only a 1ME switcher, it's tricky to go smoothly from a full-screen medium shot to the side-by-side. But, if you know the whole segment is going to be done this way, it could be setup in advance, shot and recorded. An advantage to this method is that you could use the keyer to overlay a full screen graphic with cutouts to make it look like a scaled two DVE move. In a 2ME (or 1.5ME) switcher, this could all be accomplished without any DVE involved as only simple luma keys would be needed.

  • @rwsjr
    @rwsjr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I use OBS to do this. I set up a properly scaled and positioned box of the guest in OBS superimposed over a background of my choice. I capture a Zoom window as a source in OBS to make the guest box. From here. I set the computer running OBS as an input on the ATEM. When I’m ready to bring up the guest, I bring up that input and place a similarly sized DVE box created on the ATEM next to the guest window on OBS. Several advantages to this technique. First, you can stay put in the frame, no need to move left or right. Second, you can be creative with the shape of the video boxes. Last but not least, your can put two boxes side by side and have an animated background on OBS.

    I have viewed several of your videos recently. i enjoy your presentation style. I'm having a heck of a time trying to generate lower thirds in Photoshop for the ATEM Mini Pro. Every time I transfer them to the Media pool, they appear with a white background when I use them with the DSK function. Photoshop is not on the same computer as the ATEM, so I can't use the easy way to get them into the AMP. I think I'm missing something, or it doesn't work the same when you transfer them manually into the Media pool via USB stick. Would love to see a step-by-step video on creating, transferring and displaying static lower thirds using Photoshop and the AMP.

      So the way that works in the ATEM is you can save these steps as a macro, and then run the macro to recreate it. On the Atem Mini Extreme there are 8 macro buttons, so you can save it to macro 2 and then press button 2 to run it. There's no buttons on the Mini tho. The other option is to run the macro from an external controller like Companion

  • @jurgenmiemer3772
    @jurgenmiemer3772 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    A nice, but a bit complicated way, doing this by DVE.
    The easier way: One person sitting left, the other right and a simple 50% vertical wipe will do the job.
    That's the way we've done it many years ago, when video was analog and we had no DVE.
    Or, if you combine wipe and key, you can put 3 persons side by side.
    Or, if you have 4 persons additional use the DSK with Mask. You can place them side by side, or quad.
    Each one has only to sit in the right slot. But unfotunality you will then not be able to put lower thirds in.

    • @aaronpk
      @aaronpk  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That works too, but then you lose the ability to use transitions for other things like switching to other angles or bringing in graphics with the downstream key on transitions. Also it's more awkward to tell your guest to sit over to the side of their frame.

    • @jurgenmiemer3772
      @jurgenmiemer3772 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shure, you loose transition at that time, but you can use the DVE for something else.
      Switching to other angles can still be done by macros, graphics can still be brought in using DSK-auto oder DSK-onair.
      Oh yes, it depends on how companionable your gests are.

    Any way to do side by side full picture i.e. full images of both sources but scaled down so that they have the full picture of both sources in a letterbox format. Easy to do in software such as ecamm but can you do it with the ATME mini alone?

    • @aaronpk
      @aaronpk  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately not, only one video source can be scaled in the ATEM Mini. The larger ATEMs have what’s called “Super Source” which can do what you’re describing.

  • @netscripterDE
    @netscripterDE 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Alternatively you can use the wipe transition, minimize feathering and set it to 50 percent via the T-Bar. Then - and here I am not totally sure anymore - you could use either the Up- or Downstream Key, to get a third feed into the image. But it was kind of fiddly as I remember - it‘s some months ago since I’ve tried.

    • @aaronpk
      @aaronpk  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's very fiddly, and you then lose the ability to do transitions between other scenes, so I definitely don't recommend it. You're like the third person to comment this though so I might need to make a video explaining how to do it and why you shouldn't 😅

    • @netscripterDE
      @netscripterDE 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aaronpk But by using a macro I do not see that big of a problem. Except you ultimatly need transitions for this scene. And you still can layover a graphic. But yeah, with the USK you have more options, even with color correction and some transition effects.

    th-cam.com/video/5O3NvUHNoGQ/w-d-xo.html
    What we did is set the slide transition and move it halfway and than overlay the up- or downstream key with another source.

    • @aaronpk

      Unfortunately there's not really an easy solution for this. The rotation feature is only on the older 4K ATEMs (which start at $2700). www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/atem

    I am wanting to host a zoom meeting with several participants and I want to go from a single camera angle showing my face (standard view) to showing a side by side view like you display in this video and then back again to a single camera (my face). Can the ATEM mini do this? If so, how?

    • @aaronpk
      @aaronpk  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The small ATEM Minis can sort of do this, but as I described in this video, you have to sit off to the side of the picture since you can only scale and crop one other input. The ATEM Mini Extremes have the "SuperSource" feature which lets you properly scale and crop up to 4 different sources. Check out some of my past livestreams for examples of what you can do with SuperSource aaronpk.tv/timestamps/#supersource

    For understanding the Keyers: Downstreamkeyer is manipulating 1 selectable source coming into the ATEM, the Upstreamkeyer is manipulating the program output?

    • @micahwagoner6114
      @micahwagoner6114 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Think about it this way: Upstream can change position, scale, and mask (if in DVE). It also has Luma, Chroma, and pattern keys.
      Downstream is above above the other keys and can't be repositioned. It can be masked however, and is only keyed by the black in the feed (or transparency in the media player). The dsk is basically a Luma key.
      The order of the layers from top to bottom is:
      Downstream Keys
      Upstream Keys
      Program source
      Hope that makes sense. Doug Johnson made a good video on keys. Check that one out.

    What do you think of doing this with a supersource combined with a macro? That way you can adjust your own camera position and cropping so that you don't have to move over physically.

    • @aaronpk
      @aaronpk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely a good option! I made this video before the ATEM Mini Extreme launched, so SuperSource wasn't an option!

    How did you make your multiview part of the streaming set up? How to record the multiview?

    • @aaronpk
      @aaronpk  ปีที่แล้ว

      You'd need to run the HDMI out back in to one of the inputs to record it, or use two separate ATEM Minis.

    • @aaronpk
      @aaronpk  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@daniellekaganov1237 You can get only two different HDMI outputs from the Extreme. You could hook up an HDMI splitter to run one copy of the multiview to your monitor and another copy back into the ATEM, freeing up the second HDMI port for your program monitor. If you have any trouble with that, try with a few different splitters, because some of them are finicky with different monitors and such.
