    That opening shot where everyone looks amazing is a reference to something that’s done a lot in actual comic books called a “splash page.” It’s a snapshot of an action sequence where you see everything all at once. They sprinkle a few in here or there throughout the MCU, and that opening one is one of my favorites.

      People got REAL upset when this came out, taking that line out of context and taking it to mean she meant that because she was sterile, but when you take it in context of the whole scene, Bruce says he's (most likely) sterile, and she was using it to relate to him, because not only is she a killer, and has killed LOTS of decent people, but also was sterilized because it makes her more efficient at it.

      @@hellomark1 Yeah see, I never understood the hate over that. She's obviously done some terrible things in her life, things that haunt her to this day. Being sterile is just the cherry on top. She's been trying to redeem herself for a long time, just like Bruce has. She sees a like soul in him. And maybe even though they can't have kids, they can build a life together and continue towards healing. So obviously, I took it in a MUCH different way than others did lol.

    I think one thing I love about this movie and the introduction of Vision, something that doesn't get picked up a lot and you did a little bit, is the relationship between Vision and Thor... The way that Vision kindof admired and imitated Thor straight away, like somehow, some way, given the nature of his "creation", Vision understood that Thor is just different from the others, something more... From the way that in his confusion he went straight to attack what he probably perceived to be the "greatest threat" to him, to quickly calming down and going to Thor, copying his "style", his stance and knowing that the fastest way to showed them he wasn't "an enemy" was to get Thor on his side and use the team's respect for Thor as a way to convince them, by picking up the hammer.
    They showed and implied that several times Vision confided and sought out to talk with Thor, even tho he has access to all the world's knowledge, even went it came to making battle plans.

    • @CrazeeAdam
      @CrazeeAdam ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well. I love Vision because he's a combination of Tony, Bruce, Thor, and of course him and Wanda share a connection as well. He has so many connections that make him unique and loveable, but also so powerful.

      @@CrazeeAdam don't forget the mind stone and Jarvis

    • @michaelccozens
      @michaelccozens ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The relationship between Thor and Vision is interesting, but on the "hammer" issue, I think otherwise. I'll tell you why; it wasn't Thor's judgment Vision would have been appealing to, had he known about the hammer. It would have been Mjolnir's.
      I think Vision truly didn't realize what Mjolnir was when he picked it up. That's a big part of his character; he's very powerful, but utterly guileless, in the same way JARVIS never lied because he simply never had reason to. As Vision says, he was "born yesterday".

    • @Alewaxon
      @Alewaxon ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@michaelccozens I didn't actually made much of a fuss about Vision picking up the hammer in my comment... I only mentioned in relation to how that helped him gain everybody's trust
      But you gotta remember that while, personality wise and "conscience" wise, Vision is, like you said, quite a blank slate... He does have a huge database of knowledge... Even if he isn't exactly Jarvis or Ultron, a lot of the data and knowledge he had, specially as Jarvis since it was Jarvis matrix and data that they use to create Vision, he still has and also has access to... I disagree with the idea that Vision didn't know what Mjolnir was or what it represented; he fully knew and had records of it... That's is evident in the fact that he used it and nothing else around him in order to make his point... because he knew the reaction that he might get by doing so
      The whole argument about Vision's worthiness is kindof pointless to me, given that he is just a freshly made artificial entity; so to me him actually being able to pick Mjolnir up isn't that shocking or impressive... What I really took away from that scene is what I mentioned on my comment; the fact that, based on his stored knowledge and based on his read of the people around him and the dynamics of the people around him, he surmised that the way to make them trust him was thru Thor... Get Thor's approval, get close to him and under his wing and protection, and the others would follow and trust Thor's judgement... Like I said, very evident and interesting to me how he singled out Thor and copied him so much, hanged out with him and looked for his counsel

    One thing the MCU has done well is tying in so many things from previous movies to make the next ones better:
    "How were you guys planning on beating that?"
    "Together."
    "We'll lose."
    "Then we'll do that together too."

There's so many call backs, and call backs, and call backs, to nearly every movie in this franchise later on that each movie, and even yes, most shows, are a must watch. It's a big project for new comers, but with some amazing pay offs. And I always thought Ultron was just as equally as compelling villain, if not more so, than Loki was in the first avengers. Like I think Tom Hiddelston does a great job of course as Loki, but I also think James Spader is awesome and creepy as Ultron.

    Actually, Ahab's not a biblical reference. It's the name of one of the main characters from "Moby Dick" an American novel published in the mid-19th century.
    This movie got some mixed reactions from fans when it came out, just because it felt a little crowded. To be fair, it does lay the foundation for a few more movies down the line.
    This is the only Avengers film to date that wasn't scored by Alan Silvestri. For this one, they got Brian Tyler (who had previously scored Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World) with some contributions from Danny Elfman (who had previously scored most Tim Burton films, including the first two Batman films, and also the first two Sam Raimi Spider-man films)

    A couple things to keep in mind about Vision picking up Thor's Hammer. "Worthy" is determined by Odin's definition when he casted the spell on the hammer, so what is worthy is likely tailored to what he wanted Thor to be. Second, Vision was just born and, while Jarvis has a past, Vision is a separate being and had no time to become unworthy in the eye of Odin. His only actions so far was to be confused for a moment and then try to save the world. The hammer wasn't wrong. Vision was worthy as far as Odin was concerned.

      People have some fucked-up ideas about what it means to be "worthy" of Mjölnir. I couldn't even _begin_ to count the morons I've seen gushing about how _their_ favourite character should be able to lift it because they're so good, or so pure, or so innocent. Like Spider-man; "Oh, Peter Parker is so good and pure and innocent, he _must_ be worthy!" No, he's _too_ innocent, he's not willing to kill his enemy even as a last resort. That's why he is _not_ worthy. Thor _is_ willing, Vision _is_ willing, Steve _is_ willing, that's why they are worthy.

He's the consciousness of the infinity stones, that's why Tony found him in the mind stone, and what does Tony do with him? Rip him out of the stone and put him in a USB drive, that's why he's so obsessed with building himself a body with the stone in it, so he can be "complete" again

    Great reaction! This movie has a special place in my heart, my son and I saw it together on Mother’s Day in the theater, it was awesome on the big screen. Plus I am a big James Spader fan, he portrays Ultron, you should look up some of his early work from the 80’s. He and RDJ are good friends and have starred in a few things when they were younger. Less Than Zero is a really good movie they were both in.
    A side note, Loki was working for Thanos in the first Avengers and is now in hiding from him by pretending to be Odin on Asgard as you saw at the end of Dark World. If you remember in the first Avengers Loki was warned by the “Other” a henchman for Thanos, that if Loki failed to get the tesseract then there would be no place Loki could hide from Thanos and that Loki would beg for something sweet as pain by the time Thanos was done with him.

    They also make lots of Historical and Greek or Roman myth references. It's kinda just what writers do draw on our cultural reference pool and the Bible is at least more universal than say Rip Van Winkle or Paul Bunyan or Johnny Appleseed. Also worth noting how much of their humor is very referential to other pop culture media. I think its a thing that definitely effects the way I tell stories, but I also think its a way they are able to cover so much ground so quickly. It used to be much more common in theatre and opera to use characters that everyone already knew as like an abstract representation of a well known kind of person, but since copyright got so long and hard (largely also thanks to Disney) the only way we can now get that tradition of storytelling back is within a megacorp like Disney, or to be so big it's a compliment and not a rip off.
    Some historical references
    - they reference the lend lease act in Civil War as a prominent element
    - Tony's quote "Peace in our time" is a very famous quote from Neville Chamberlain who was Prime minister of the UK right before WW2 who negotiated with Germany and France for Germany to annex the Sudetenland from Czechoslovakia - basically on the promise that they wouldn't expand further. His claim was they prevented another World War (or Avengers movie in this case) but obviously then Hitler invaded Poland. In this case it's because the Mind Stone, or Loki's Scepter and Thanos clearly had an idea of this as a poison pill, or a sleeper cell on Earth taking advantage of their fears to bring ruin.
    - Ahab was actually referring to Moby Dick not the bible I think, he's looking for his white whale.

    Colette, i just figured out why they called this movie, Age of Ultron, he wanted all the humans dead and it would be just ultrons running around, and they named it after the marvel xmen comic book run, the Age of Apocalypse, when Prof X's son Legion went back in time and killed his father, so the Xmen never existed and the villain Apocalypse, who was originally defeated by the Xmen, was able to take over the world, and kill all the humans so there would be only mutants.

    One thing I like about Ultron here, is that at no point does he seem callous or unsympathetic to the Romanoff twins. Misinformed, perhaps, or naive, to their feelings, but he does seem to prioritize his consideration of them. I think he really considers them friends. We have no idea whether he may have had some plan to keep them safe (because once they discovered his intention, they never inquired), but I wouldn't be surprised. It does make him feel human, if in a very emotionally immature way.

    Tony is laughing because he was so desperate to protect humans that he developed artificial intelligence to protect them. The artificial intelligente, using its logic, chose to get rid of all humanity to solve all their problems. Therefore, Tony used tne scepter knowing he was going to be told not to mess with forces he can't understand, which turned out to be true. He could never control Ultron. He took his concept of "peace in our times", twisted it and mixed it with his own goals.

    Hey, Colette! "Avengers: Age of Ultron" is a massive film. It brings everything that precedes it together and launches the MCU into six new directions going forward while introducing eight new characters! The catalyst for all this change is a classic Avengers villain of their own making: the artificial intelligence known as Ultron bent on the extermination of organic life! The film loosely draws from the Avengers stories "Behold the Vision" and "Ultron Unlimited" with the key difference being that Ultron's creator was changed from Hank Pym aka Ant-Man in the comics to Tony Stark in the MCU.
    Director of "The Avengers", Joss Whedon, returns and very nearly succeeds at keeping all the plates spinning for this encore. He skillfully globetrots from New York to Johannesburg to Seoul to fictitious Sokovia in Eastern Europe for the breathless, apocalyptic climax! During an early scene of camaraderie, Whedon invites the audience to revel in the shared humanity of these larger-than-life figures while, in a later hallucinatory sequence, he exposes their inner frailties to us nearly shattering the team. It is this attention to character that invests us in the spectacle which Whedon provides in abundance with set pieces like the punishing Hulkbuster throwdown in Jo-burg, the exhilarating car chase and runaway train in Seoul, and the all-hands-on-deck, race-against-the-clock Battle of Sokovia on a floating chunk of continental Europe against rampaging robotic legions! Whedon even provides two team slow-motion money shots to bookend the film. The connective tissue is thick in this lynchpin chapter of the saga which has ties to six future stories: "Captain America: Civil War", "Black Widow", "Black Panther", "Thor: Ragnarok", "Avengers: Infinity War" and "WandaVision"! With so much happening, it is inevitable that certain elements get short shrift such as the Thor subplot while others remain questionable choices like the Hulk's romance with Natasha. That pairing is pure MCU and was never part of their comic history. One plot element that was drawn from Marvel's secondary Ultimate Universe was Hawkeye's secret family. In the original 616 Universe, Clint was an incorrigible tomcat who has bagged practically every female Avenger! Lol. It is also Hawkeye who gets, arguably, the best moment in the film when he delivers the greatest motivational speech ever in the heat of battle.
    The cast is appropriately huge and pulls from all the franchises to date. Robert Downey, Jr. returns as Tony Stark aka Iron Man with Don Cheadle as Col. James 'Rhodey' Rhodes aka War Machine and Paul Bettany as JARVIS who undergoes a major transformation becoming The Vision. A combination of synthetic organic components and inorganic vibranium controlled by an intellect that is part JARVIS, part Ultron and part Infinity Stone, he emerges as a mysterious and powerful presence sired by a villain yet capable of effortlessly lifting Mjolnir. The trope of an alien outsider who aspires to humanity is an old one but Bettany breathes fresh life into it with quiet thoughtfulness. Substituting JARVIS, Tony's new A.I., FRIDAY, is voiced by Kerry Condon. Chris Evans returns as Steve Rogers aka Captain America with Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson aka Falcon and Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter who appears in a vision. Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor Odinson aka Thor to portray the character in a straightforward manner for the last time. He is joined by Stellan Skarsgard as Dr. Erik Selvig and Idris Elba as Heimdall who appears in a vision. Mark Ruffalo returns as Bruce Banner aka Hulk with Lou Ferrigno again providing Hulk's roar. Scarlett Johansson returns as Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow whose Red Room past is briefly glimpsed in a vision that features one of her trainers, Madame B, played by Julie Delpy. Jeremy Renner returns as Clint Barton aka Hawkeye whose secret domestic life is revealed in the form of two kids and a pregnant wife, Laura Barton, played by Linda Cardellini. Representing the former SHIELD, Samuel L. Jackson returns as Col. Nick Fury with Cobie Smulders as former Agent and current Stark Industries employee Maria Hill as well as Aaron Himelstein as Specialist Cameron Klein who refused to launch the helicarriers at gunpoint in "Winter Soldier". Representing Hydra, Thomas Kretschmann reprises his "Winter Soldier" end-credit turn as Baron Wolfgang von Strucker as does Henry Goodman as Dr. List who portrayed his character between films on "Agents of SHIELD". Making their proper debut after their "Winter Soldier" end-credit appearance are Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Pietro Maximoff aka Quicksilver and Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch, the Sokovian fraternal twins and Hydra volunteers who survived being experimented on by the Chitauri Scepter. James Spader's silky voice and sardonic wit bring Ultron to vivid life as a menacing A.I. bent on exterminating everything organic to fulfill his programming of ensuring peace. As a disembodied intelligence, a collective drone legion or in his vibranium chassis, he is the most formidable opponent the Avengers have yet faced. Andy Serkis does a terrific turn as the unsavory Ulysses Klaue, a South African mercenary who loses an arm to Ultron and who introduces the concept of Wakanda. Claudia Kim plays Dr. Helen Cho whose research into synthetic skin proves instrumental in the development of Vision. Ingvild Deila, who was the physical template for the CGI Princess Leia in "Rogue One", has a bit part as a technician at the internet's World Hub in Oslo. Lastly, Josh Brolin returns as Thanos for the character's third appearance in the saga.
    TRIVIA:
    1. As 20th-Century Fox studios owned the film rights to anything mutant-related in the Marvel Universe, Wanda and Pietro could not be identified as such although they are mutants in the comics. Instead, they were designated as 'enhanced' in the film. The characters were able to be incorporated into the MCU because they are Avengers in the comics which meant that both Disney and Fox had access to them.
    2. Since Ultron is nine feet tall, James Spader wore a harness with two stalks that extended three feet above his head upon which two red balls were mounted to represent Ultron's eyes! Spader's scene partners had to direct their gaze at the red balls when acting opposite him.
    3. While the JARVIS A.I. is actually an acronym that means "Just A Rather Very Intelligent System", the FRIDAY A.I. is both a reference to the '40's slang 'girl Friday' otherwise known as a secretary who provides invaluable support to her boss as well as the 1940 film "His Girl Friday" known for its snappy banter which is shared by Stark and his new operating system.
    4. A motion capture performance artist pioneer known for Gollum, King Kong, Caesar and Snoke, Andy Serkis did double-duty as Ulysses Klaue and as technical consultant on ILM's new motion capture system called "Muse" which provided more expressive rendering for the Hulk and Ultron.
    EASTER EGGS:
    1. In the comics, Dr. Helen Cho is the mother of Amadeus Cho, the seventh smartest person on the planet and a close friend to Hulk and Hercules!
    2. When Ultron first meets the twins in the church, he is draped in a crimson cloth referencing his first appearance in the comics when he hid his robotic face with a red hood and went by the moniker of The Crimson Cowl!
    3. The band playing during Cap's hallucination are identified as 'The Roy Thomas Players'. Roy Thomas was Marvel's editor-in-chief during the 1970s!
    4. Four Infinity Stones have been seen in the saga so far but "Age of Ultron" reveals that the Tesseract and the Chitauri Scepter gem are containment units for their Stones much like the Orb in "Guardians of the Galaxy" while the Aether can crystallize into a concentrated ingot!
    CAMEO:
    1. Stan Lee appears as a World War II veteran at the Avengers Tower party who unwisely imbibes Thor's potent Asgardian ale leaving him unable to walk and mumbling his catch-phrase 'Excelsior'!
    END-CREDIT SCENE:
    1. Thanos reaches into an aperture and removes an Infinity Gauntlet which he puts on and balls into a fist resolving to handle matters personally.
    The next chronological stop in the MCU are Episodes 20-22 of Season 2 of "Agents of SHIELD" which concludes the second season of the show.
