Saw this in the theatre when it came out, and "I am Iron Man" was such a nice twist from every other secret identity superhero movie... it still gives me goosebumps even seeing it now. But yeah, RDJ playing him as the "lovable jerk" is perfect, becoming a hero doesn't change him from that, he's like that one friend we all have that we're sometimes embarassed about
@17:30 - Tony testing new tech is always comedy, but it shows that despite being a genius, he's not perfect and makes mistakes. @20:20 - Tony forgot that his suit weighs about half a ton, and regular house floors aren't rated for that. 🙂 @23:20 - In the comics, bad guys are often bald. Besides the two baldies in this film, see also Lex Luthor in the Superman stories.
What I liked most about this movie is that they used the original origin story but just changed the time. When the comic first came out it was during the Vietnam War. Tony was captured by the North Vietnamese and with the help of a fellow prisoner (who voluntarily died giving Tony the distraction he needed for his escape) he built the first very clunky Iron Man suit that looked very much like the one in the beginning of the movie. Just from that first scene, and the story of Yinsen as he's dying, I knew I was going to like what they were doing with this movie.
The fact that this came out in '08, in peak US-in-Iraq-and-Afghanistan as not only a modernization of the original story but also emphasizing the wartime profiteering/ capitalism as the ultimate baddie really sets it apart. I don't think there was nearly as much (any) of that double-dealing that we saw with Obadiah in Vietnam (although I might be mistaken), so to really emphasize that the warmongers in charge of arms dealing were unquestionably the bad guys made a truly impactful statement that set the stage for what the MCU could be and do.
@@max_2da_max336 Err, what? Do you think that Raytheon was selling missiles to the Taliban under the table or something? I don't remember ever hearing anything like that.
@@WJS774 Raytheon didn't have to. The United States invaded sovereign nations with no involvement in 9/11 at the behest of warmongers affiliated with Raytheon, Halliburton, and beyond. Those companies then profited tremendously at the expense of innocent lives. The villainy was less so selling arms to terrorists and more so the furtherance of endless warmongering/ further loss of innocent life.
Right at the start, when the convoy is ambushed, you notice that Tony asks the soldiers "Wait! Give me a gun!"? He doesn't want to just cower in the truck while other men risk their lives to protect him, and in a deleted scene he does find a gun and joins the fight. Because of course he knows how to handle a rifle, he's a weapons guy. Tony Stark was a hero before he became Iron Man.

The funny thing to me at least is, while there are some movies that are kind of lesser than others, none are really "bad". I think all are at least worth a watch. Like I wouldn't say any are absolutely bad or unwatchable. Some are like average, because the bar was set so high from movie 1 in Iron Man.
Burger King didn't pay anything for the product placement, it was at Robert Downey Jr's request that BK got that cameo, as he credits Burger King with saving his life. The burger king thing was actually Robert Downey's idea. before landing the role as Tony/Iron Man you could say his hollywood star had faded. In an out of jail and rehab, etc. One night down on his luck he found himself in Burger King and had what he called "The worst burger he ever had" and somehow from that point on he, with his wife's support, turned his life and his career around.
The song you asked about at 4:05 is Institutionalized, by Suicidal Tendencies. They were a punk/metal band that came out in 1980. Some incarnation of them is still around, I believe.
For a little bit of perspective, director Jon Favreau, who also played limo driver Happy Hogan, knew he wanted Downey to play Tony Stark. The studio wasn't sold on Downey. Downey had had a substance abuse problem, and had previously been kind of unreliable. A brilliant actor but a big risk to base a potential franchise on. There were a couple of other actors that the studio thought might fit the role and be more stable, like Tom Cruise , Nicholas Cage, or Sam Rockwell. But Favreau insisted that Downey was the guy. Turned out Favreau was right. One thing that can be said about Marvel is that almost without exception, their casting has been spot on in every project.
22:16 He stopped because he realized he was going in the same direction as he does with other women. Just a heads up, one of the original comic book writers by the name of Stan Lee appears in every one of the MCU movies. I’m subscribed to follow your MCU journey. This could be great! Phase 1 - 4 is about 22 movies. Throughout the entire universe, we follow Tony’s heroes journey that comes full circle. The character development for all the main characters is incredible. Will be following your journey through this universe. I would also recommend Firefly, Serenity and Deadpool
Interesting note about his first meal after getting back being Burger King. That was for a reason that was personal to Robert Downey Junior. Now, what I’m about to say next is completely relying on my memory, so some elements may or may not be accurate. If I remember correctly, he used to have quite the drug problem. At some point, while high on who knows what, he went and got a burger from Burger King. In his drug addled state, that burger tasted so horrible to him that he immediately threw in into the sea, along with every drug in his car, and almost immediately started to turn his life around. Now, since I don’t know how accurate my memory of this story is, I encourage you to look it up for yourself. Anyway, that’s something to know about the MCU: Even some of the most minor details have some level of significance, and many things are referenced in later films.
All I'll say is 1. Don't listen to naysayers 2. Release order is critical to how they build the world. It looks like you already missed Incredible Hulk, but it's not too late to go back 3. Always stay until the end of the credits 4. Look for Silver Age writer and co-creator of many of the characters Stan Lee as a cameo in each film until his passing in the late 2010s (in this film, he's mistaken by Tony for Playboy founder Hugh Hefner) 5. While they aren't technically part of the MCU, some later entries expect you to be somewhat familiar with the Spider-Man films by Sam Raimi, the Amazing Spider-Man films by Marc Webb, the X-Men series from 20th Century Fox, and at least the first season of the Netflix show Daredevil (now on Disney+), so checking those out at some point when you have the time is useful 6. It seems daunting after so many years and so many entries, but if you pace yourself you're in for a hell of a ride.
Loved the reaction, you're in for a hell of a ride, especially if you decide to delve right in from the outset into some of the other branches like the Daredevil and other Netflix MCU content (which I recommend. I have to point out that Samuel L. Jackson actually has a tee-shirt that says "I'm not Lawrence Fishburne", so, I mean it's not a good mistake, but you're not the first!
well this is a surprise, didnt expect you to go on this journey :D Robert Downey Jr. does a perfect job here embodying Tony Stark, an iconic role at this point :) wait what does Samuel L. Jackson have to do with Matrix xD great reaction Coco :)
"why did he do that? She went in.." Well let me tell you something about trauma. Everyone deals with it different. Tony feels like he's never really had anyone since he was a teenager. His parents died when he was young, he was taken care of kind of by people in his house and Obediah, but that's not love, that's taking care of someone because of their name. He's had flings all over the place, but that's not relationships. The only one he's ever had is himself. Hard to be vulnerable and let someone you actually care about in like he was about too with Pepper at the party. Not to mention his mental bout, because while they used it against him, there's no doubt he suffers from PTSD in this movie and others. Tony's story is not one of glory, but trauma, sadness, and learning to love again and let others into his life.
ALWAYS watch these in theatrical release order, otherwise it won't make much sense. Also, in the comics, that was the story that he used to protect his identity, that Iron Man was his 'bodyguard' and not actually him. Thought that was a nice nod to it in that last scene. And what Rhodey means by 'next time, baby' is that he also gets a suit and becomes the War Machine, my personal favorite. Just picture Iron Man in black and grey, with ALL THE GUNS
liked your reaction you should also watch the other Marvel movies. there are also good DC movies like: The Batman Trilogy (beginning in 2005), Man of Steel, Watchmen, Aqua Men, Wonder Women just to name a few
Ahh this will be great; both to experience the older movies again, and a new (to the series) person’s perspective. I can’t wait until we get till we get to the ‘End’ of the series….

All I'll say is
1. Don't listen to naysayers
2. Release order is critical to how they build the world. It looks like you already missed Incredible Hulk, but it's not too late to go back
3. Always stay until the end of the credits
4. Look for Silver Age writer and co-creator of many of the characters Stan Lee as a cameo in each film until his passing in the late 2010s (in this film, he's mistaken by Tony for Playboy founder Hugh Hefner)
5. While they aren't technically part of the MCU, some later entries expect you to be somewhat familiar with the Spider-Man films by Sam Raimi, the Amazing Spider-Man films by Marc Webb, the X-Men series from 20th Century Fox, and at least the first season of the Netflix show Daredevil (now on Disney+), so checking those out at some point when you have the time is useful
6. It seems daunting after so many years and so many entries, but if you pace yourself you're in for a hell of a ride.
The last time someone thought Sam was "the Matrix guy," he got reeeaaal mad.
I didn't know Laurence Fishbourne played Nick Fury. 🤣
A straight classic. Ironman is cool. I have this in 4K. I had awesome time watching this with you "Colette. Very good 💐
Yinsen turned out to be one of the most important people in the MCU.
28:26 what kind of laugh was that 😂😂😂
Love the "the matrix guy" Samuel jackson hear that a lot.
Great reaction! Just found your channel. Can't to take this journey with you, remember every MCU movie has a end credit scene , some has two!
This was like a mom reacting to new technology and being amazed by it good reaction 😂
well this is a surprise, didnt expect you to go on this journey :D Robert Downey Jr. does a perfect job here embodying Tony Stark, an iconic role at this point :) wait what does Samuel L. Jackson have to do with Matrix xD great reaction Coco :)
I like how excited you get. Also, it's cute how some times you don't enunciate letters.
Just to give you a heads up, Rhodey is recast in future movies. He’s replaced by Don Cheadle who plays the character a lot better
why would you tell her , it's supposed to be a surprise
How is that a surprise? She’d just be confused?
His suit had his new and improved power source. And bigger is not always better.
Glad you love it he’s my fav superhero always will be don’t forget to watch em in order and stay for the end credits welcome to the mcu world
Great reaction n now I’m a subscriber
I'm with you. I'm always looking for the romance too. Even in horror movies. A good romance makes the story better.
Great watchalongs, super cool 😎
they do get better and better so yes watchh in order
Just found your channel today, glad I did, you're awesome, I SUB'd 😎
"It's the Matrix guy"
Oh No.
You need to do a full marvel marathon reaction, that would be great!
Welcome to the MCU Family.
its crazy how many people actually havent seen a marvel movie
any tips on editing movies so you dont upload full movies, which parts do you edit out
You're going on an epic more than two dozen movie ride. You won't be the same after watching all the MCU content.
I turned 13 when the movie came out and I watched it twice in the cinema but wasn't allowed to go watch it a third time so I had to watch it at home😂
"what is he listening to?" Suicidal Tendencies, one of the greatest punk bands of all time.
liked your reaction you should also watch the other Marvel movies. there are also good DC movies like: The Batman Trilogy (beginning in 2005), Man of Steel, Watchmen, Aqua Men, Wonder Women just to name a few
Ahh this will be great; both to experience the older movies again, and a new (to the series) person’s perspective. I can’t wait until we get till we get to the ‘End’ of the series….
Samuel L Jackson has never played in the matrix 🤣
Okay I didn't pay attention the many times I saw this but... They mentioned the group's name that took over Gulmir is called Ten Rings. That is crazy!
😬 is this some foreshadowing
No not really don't even think about it he never said anything
You shouldn't even know this
Toughest part of this movie to swallow. "Tony" would CLEARLY go to "In 'n Out."
Burger King did not spend a cent on promotion. RDJ did the call-out as someone described above, related to his turning point to recovery.
