Cost Of Living in Cambodia 2023 | You won't believe Siem Reap is this cheap!

  • In this video, I’ll explain what we spend on living in Siem Reap, Cambodia as a couple, and I’ll also break it down so you can see what the same lifestyle would cost for a single person. I’ll explain how I arrived at the costs for each of the items so you can adjust them based on your preferences and lifestyle.
    After I go through the monthly cost of living expenses, I’ll make a projection of how it all adds up for a year so you can look at what it costs annually if that’s your preference. I’ll include what we think is a reasonable amount to bring to cover your startup costs and give you an all-in amount that will cover absolutely everything for your time here in the Kingdom.
    All of the amounts here are in US dollars. Please use a site like xe.com to get an accurate real-time conversion if you prefer to see the amount in another currency.

      EB visa $300
      But now it is not sufficient.
      You also need a work permit $300
      And many other documents $50 ++
      So the annual visa cost to stay in Cambodia as of 2023 is about $700

    • @ForRiel
      @ForRiel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dongshengdi773 I guess it depends whether your employer will pay for the work permit.

    • @dongshengdi773
      @dongshengdi773 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ForRiel Note that if you're not working , if you're retired living in Cambodia, an EB visa is not sufficient. You won't be allowed to stay in Cambodia with just an EB visa, you will be forced to also get a work permit. An agent will handle the paper works for a fee .
      Total cost would roughly be about $700

    I live in Kampot and rent a 2 bedroom, double story villa about 1.5km up the river going toward Sabay beach, i have a lovely big balcony i love to sit on. My rent is around US$340 a month with electricity, water with a small charge for rubbish collection.
    I buy all my vegetables, fruit, meat and seafood from the great market here.

    I leave the us in a week for Thailand for 11 days then to Siem reap. Thinking of moving to Siem reap. I have a monthly income of a little over 1100 usd a month after other expenses I have. According to your calculations I could live really comfortably. I got my first month accommodation from a previous video of yours. Secret garden homestay. Keep up the great videos

    I have been in Cambodia and frankly cannot see my wife driving a car, or riding a motorbike in that traffic madness ...way too stressful or dangerous! I am sure that there must be others in our situation. Love to read on how they get around to shop and sightsee?
    When in Siem Reap I used the Tuk Tuks which I found incredibly efficient, value for money, and great to see the world go by without a worry ...used the motorbike-taxi service once and needed a few Valiums to recover from the experience!

    • @ForRiel

      It's very easy to get around using a ride share app such as Grab or PassApp. You can choose whether you want a big, traditional tuk tuk or a smaller 3-wheel one. Very cheap at around $1 for the average journey in town.

    5:30 ... Sorry to interrupt BUT ... don't worry about ceilings having much, if any, effect on your AC bill. If you're a baby boomer then you'll likely remember when supermarket freezers had no top on them. You reached into them and grabbed your ice cream with no door or lid to open. that's cause cold air falls and hot air rises. If your refrigerator at home had no top of any kind, you'd be shocked at how little effect this would be on your bill.

    Great information Claire. Thank you so much. Some of these things I already knew from living there in Siem Reap before. But seeing new information from a different perspective is always welcome and useful.
    I’m afraid that at my age now, ( 72 later this year). And pre-existing conditions….quadruple cardiac artery bypass…. That any insurance I might find would cost so much, that I would have to be independently wealthy.
    I may have to just do without health insurance. I AM covered for six months out of country by my Greenshield from my previous 30 years with my employer. Excellent coverage. But after six months, or 180 days…..I would be on my own.
    Thank you Claire and Jeremy. Best wishes to you both. 👏🏼🙏🏼☸️🙂🌴🌴🌴✈️

    • @ForRiel
      @ForRiel  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think if you have some funds behind you, it's almost like self-insurance. It really does become more difficult with age and pre-existing issues, but in some ways, those two factors make a person more determined to get the most out of whatever time they have. I guess you have to weigh up the risk vs the reward. All the best. 😊

    Well done on your video.
    Obviously you are a couple of youngish age 🙂
    Perhaps a perspective from an old guy?
    76+ years old, healthy, living alone in a modern fully serviced western style one bedroom apartment 3 minute walk to pub street.
    So no moto, use passapp as when required, but otherwise I like to walk(good cardio exercise)
    Have lived in Siem Reap since 2019 as well as Phnom Penh Before that.
    For the last couple of years I have used an app on my phone to record EVERYTHING I spend.
    So I can tell you what I spent on Potatoes 3 months ago 🙂
    Rent was cheap after covid but is slowly on the rise as more people come back to live in SR.
    My $200 a month apartment is part of a newish (I was first tenant in Feb 2019) 12 unit block and as units become available prices are going up. I suspect my $200 a month will head to $300 if/when I vacate.
    Electricity costs is a piece of string question. As you know April is the hot month.
    Whereas my dry season electric is around $30-35 a month I suspect Aprils bill will be closer to $60.
    Insurance-Health Insurance is a biggy for us oldies.
    While Doctors visits and medication is cheap. Going to a modern hospital is eye wateringly expensive if you don't have medical insurance. Think $1400 USD a day for intensive care, and that's just the basics. ie no medications.
    Personally I find it cheaper to fly home to NZ every 12 months and take out travel insurance via my Automobile Association(AA) for 12 months. Much cheaper even including airfares than trying to get anything here or internationally.
    Especially once over 70 when most companies dont issue policies.
    Eating. As I get older my food intake has reduced, I only eat twice a day....I cook breakfast each day(Full English bacon eggs etc etc) my main meal. If I eat out by myself $2-$4 is plenty.(I eat Asian food). I am old school and enjoy a beer or 2 or 3 or ? every evening.
    Lots of calories and water there.
    I love going to local markets and only go to supermarkets for things I cant buy at local market...Currently that is Baked Beans!
    In Summary, My NZ Pension provides me with a very pleasant life style, including monthly? trips to Phnom Penh or the occasional trip to Thailand or Vietnam etc. If I wasn't a social gadabout (read in to that what you will) I could easily live a more miserable life, haha, for around $800 or less. $1500 a month gives me a full and entertaining lifestyle.

    • @ForRiel
      @ForRiel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks much for your cost of living, I really like the yearly travel insurance trick may have to give that a go.

    Thanks for this helpful breakdown of costs. I have been investigating the cost of health insurance and found that it is very expensive for people over 60. The cheapest I have found so far is just over $200 per month with a deductible amount of $500 per year. This is for hospital and medevac only. The company you mentioned does not insure people over 60.

    • @ForRiel
      @ForRiel  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah unfortunately it gets very expensive for anyone over 60. You just have way up the risk factor, and maybe have a self insurance fund.
      Plus maybe factor in 6 monthly major check ups in Malaysia or Thailand. Healthcare is improving so hopefully the coverage cost will go down.
