    I thought "For the man who has everything" was a great insight into Superman's character. His ideal dream life isn't as Superman as some powerful self-imposed ruler, but as Kal-El, a humble farmer with his family back on Krypton. It really cemented for me the idea that any story that makes Superman the "bad guy" doesn't understand who Superman is as a person.

      It also shows why he sees the idea of having kids with Lashina as such a horrible thing. He doesn't want his son to have someone like that for a mother. Not because he hates the people of Apokalips, but because Lashina's influence would not be a positive one. Whether this son would have cool cyber-kinetic powers doesn't even enter into the decision making process.

    Talking about Clark being a foreigner... I'm rewatching Justice League (thanks to your Wally video, btw) and I realized something in the Blackest Night arc. Hawkgirl looks and Superman and tells him how weird "you humans are." She then apologizes for sounding harsh and Superman simply responds with "no, I take it as a compliment." He's almost giddy to think that someone sees him as just a human, reinforcing his innocent need for acceptance in the world he's scared of being shunned from. The DCAU was a gorgeous thing

    Superman; more specifically, Clark, is a very good representation of nurture over nature.

    For me, it's one of the simple things. In the DCAU world "made of cardboard", he seldom "explodes" into motion. He usually just floats away and speeds up slowly. He absolutely could take off like a rocket. But he doesn't want to, because of the possible collateral damage. But he doesn't need to, because he appreciates even the simple or mundane things around him.

    • @MrBazBake
      @MrBazBake ปีที่แล้ว +17

      But that scene is followed by MASSIVE collateral damage and people screaming in terror while Superman destroys the city... people just ignore that part.
      Also, this scene is copied again with Captain Marvel when he destroys another city to provd Lex Luthor is a criminal. The scene is really about how Clark has a barely contained temper that Darkseid and Lex Luthor trigger constantly, just like most of the DCAU is (see: Justice Lords).

    • @RagingBlazeBloodBaka

      @@MrBazBake you didn't get the point, the point of that scene is how powerful Superman is when he stops holding back, and we see that massive damage throughout the city , that's the point, is for us to see how powerful superman is when not holding back, that's literally the point, plus when superman punches him through into buildings I don't hear any people screaming

    • @rogue_2k374
      @rogue_2k374 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @MrBazBake you aren’t wrong. He wasn’t holding back and people got hurt. But something that is sometimes overlooked is that Superman has a moral compass. In the Justice Lords timeline he stopped holding back and main timeline Superman knew this. And even faced with the same scenario he was so close to becoming the same villain he feared. He wanted to kill Lex. He was praying to his God to let him be that man. But he just couldn’t. His restraint is so powerful that even when he wanted to kill Alex he couldn’t. He just couldn’t.

      The whole adoption angle and Kal-El technically being an "illegal alien" (literally an alien, too) was a huge plotpoint in _Man of Steel._ And even though that movie has some massive flaws & illogical scenes, that was the thing IMO the writers got right. But ironically, that specific point was something many American fans seemed to hate to judge my Internet comments; maybe because traditionally Superman had been this "All-American Hero", grown up on farm in a rural small town America with mum's applepie, dressed in "patriotic" colours of the flag.

Part of his speech is about how it is wrong for more advanced cultures to come to more backwards places and “colonize” them, and another part about how Humanity hates and rejects things for being different…while being an open alien on a team with another alien that both are accepted and lauded as heroes.

    There was one scene in Whedon’s JL movie I wish was in the Snydercut (or at least the idea expressed) where Brice tells Alfred that Clark was more human than Bruce was. It’s what, in my opinion, makes the “Martha” scene work so well because it made Batman realize in that moment that he was trying to kill someone’s son; a man who had everything Bruce didn’t which made him, oddly enough, as human as the rest of us.

      In JL 17's defense, that scene has been done worse: there's one from Superman for Tomorrow where he talks with Batman and it's really stilted, less like two friends taking and more the writer having characters bluntly discuss their dynamic in stilted fashion.

    His love and want to protect life is what Superman needs more of in modern media. Often the conversation is what villain he has to fight and can they challenge him like he was Batman, but his stories work best when it is not about the villain and about can he save everyone or not. I think that is why the villains I like best for him are ones that may not challenge him physically but in ideological or indirect ways, like The Elite or when Luthor is using his influence rather than his power suits

      Then you may enjoy a short story called "The Metropolitan Man." It's mostly from the prospective of Luther, so Superman is ostensibly the antagonist, but simply because Lutehr can't accept someone having that much power, while Clark struggles with how much he should use it. Clark tries to do only "unambiguous goods," but the question of what problems he can and can't solve, and what problems he shouldn't, are not trivial. He uses his super hearing, for example, to show up whever someone fires a gun, so murderers use knives, because the sound of cutting someone with a knife is not sufficiently distinct from cutting steak or something, and there's another character, William Calhoun, the last mob boss of metropolis, who goes out of his way to goad superman. Every night, he speaks to superman, knowing that he can hear him from wherever he is, and talks about all the terrible things he's done and sometimes hints at what he will do, knowing that superman can't testify ot any of it, and tells him that all he has to do to make it stop is to kill him.
      He runs into all of these problems, simply because he has so much power; Luther has no dislike for him, and in fact respects him once he finds out who he is, but is so terrified by the idea of an omniscient alien god who can see through walls, hear any private conversation, and respond with unlimited force that he has to find a way to oppose him anyway. Clark is caught between two enemies, Calhoun, who opposes Superman because of his "hypocritical" policy of "unambiguous good," who hates him, because Superman has to power to do anything, but is too timid to use his power to truly accomplish his goals, and Luthor who opposes superman, because he's terrified of what might happpen if Superman started to bend that definition of "unambiguous good" a little too far. Calhoun respects Superman's power, but hates Clark KEnt underneath it, whereas Luthor respects the person underneath, but fears unimaginable power he happens to have.

    Overly Sarcastic Productions out it best, when Clark is given everything he ever wants he knows there is something wrong and when he realizes he needs to let his perfect world be destroyed and lose his son he is heartbroken.
    He doesn't dismiss his son as an illusion, he spends the last moments of that world staring into his eyes and promises to remember him.

    You'd be surprised how many people the World of Cardboard speech resonates with. Growing up, when puberty hit, I bulked up considerably and suddenly had it drilled in my head every day that I needed to hold back because I could hurt someone I don't want to. After a regretable period of life, I started to hold back, but knowing what I could do is terrifying to me.

    Another great video that shows an understanding of the type of person Superman really is. The cardboard speech was definitely an awesome scene that shows Superman going all out against Darkseid, but more importantly it shows why Superman has to restrain even against his enemies, unless he absolutely has to. Nice of this video to remind everyone who watches it that Superman's humanity comes from how much he cares about people, which he learned to do from how his adopted parents raised him.

    I think you pointing out something small like Superman using Batman as motivation for the idea that he never gives up- and the reason why he loves Lois really hit deep. The fact that he himself looks up to the people in his life to teach him how to be better. That's probably one of the most relatable things I realize is apart of Superman. I wouldn't be able to keep going if I didn't think about everyone I love who keep going despite everything they've been through. My parents, my best friends, everyone. Some great trait I've learned about them and admired about them so I too can wield it while trying to push them on. The fact that he's admired doesn't stop him from the fact that he really admires others just as greatly, and THAT'S why he sees that everyone has the potential for good. Those that do wrong might not have anyone to show them that there's always a way. Maybe every time they've tried to do good, the people in their lives and the events that shaped them kept pushing them down until they felt it was all hopeless.. and so that's why Superman keeps fighting on. He knows that inspiration leads to inspiration, a kind act can lead to a kind act- and if it's taken advantage of- the person is called out before given another kind act- until that person begins giving out kind acts in response. Realizing the only person holding them back is themselves. Training their empathy or their sense of helping others like a muscle... and just like how astronauts who escape the earth's gravity and see it and the moon experience the Overview effect- Superman is in a constant state of this feeling, being able to see bacteria- hearing everyone- seeing the cosmos for what it is... holy shit I think I finally get Superman completely.

    • @chimedemon
      @chimedemon ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ALSO! I think I really wanna see something done with these next DC movies that the comics just simply aren't really able to do... make the world slowly become better- or even the villains. In Gotham it's always a shit hole, it's always a nightmare, the villains always escape- but the movies can make it go through an arc. Starting out as a terrifying place, and slowly get the right infrastructure and stability it needs. Every time it's knocked down or the people are hurt- it grows even stronger. The villains all start out how they do in the comics- their worst versions of themselves, as some of them slowly actually heal in Arkham Asylum throughout the movies. Not all of them of course, some of them would get even worse. This could especially be taken to Metropilis. It starts out as a pretty city and changes into one of the best places a person could be in. The education, the community, the crime rate, even the technology (I think worldwide it'd make more sense in general) all slowly improving.
      And I would still make it so that each film where it's shown how things are getting better- each new villain that's introduced threatens to just destroy all of it so easily in terrifying ways. I'm thinking that they could genuinely make them disturbing villains just from the contrast (like how Invincible shows such a disturbing contrast between the hopeful optimistic ideas of superhereos with the brutal reality of the darkest and most disturbing aspects of life... and the kinds of people that could exist.) It obviously couldn't become as graphic as Invincible- but just try and keep that brutality and unkindness of some of the worst parts of it while still having the classic superman there to do his best regardless.

    The DCAU defiantly had one of the best versions of Superman from a human character point and the world of cardboard will always go down as one of my favorite scene in the entire franchise. A lot of people complain that the scene comes out of nowhere but one of the things that makes it so great is that it is actually built up throughout all the series that make up the DCAU. We saw in in his own series that Superman was capable of beating Darkseid literally to death with little effort once he was truly enraged and stopped holding back after Turpin's murder. Darkseid was helpless to do anything. The only reason he survived was because the people of Apocalypses CHOSE to not only spare him but keep him as their god when Superman offered to let them choose his fate to try and free them. We also saw in the original Justice League series with the Doctor Destiny that Superman's single greatest fear was his own power. He started out as an ordinary kid but just kept getting stronger with no limit in sight. By that point in time Superman was already strong enough to kill anyone he met with just a casual touch and he feared that one day his strength would exceed his control. Hell, we even saw his greatest dream with Mongols starfish thing was to live an ordinary life.

    I always thought of superman as a rebuttal to the old "absolute power corrupts absolutely" saying. Super-man can move planets, he can destroy suns, he can rip and destroy everything like it was cardboard, and yet in some of his best stories he chooses to stand up for the little guy and the common man. he protects everyone to the best of his ability. I'm not saying stories where superman turns evil are bad, but I think they kinda betray a core concept of the character in my eyes and there hasn't really been a story I see as the definitive super-man turns evil story( with the exception of maybe red son, but he's not evil so much as its "what if superman was a Russian and communist") I think that's why Snyder's superman has divided so many people, I mean there's also the terrible and obvious Christ metaphor, but I don't like that take cause it kinda takes superman's humanity away a little bit and makes him almost ancient alien-esque where he's this unknowable in human paragon of virtue. The Snyder movies feel like they separate superman from humanity and I feel like that;s why people aren't in love with that character. honestly the best modern portrayal ( and I'm only saying this cause I haven't seen superman returns) is the joss whedon superman from justice league ( and I just recently saw the Snyder cut ad i still prefer the whedon one), because there's a warmth to the character, he still gets angry and still makes some mistakes, but it does a better job of bringing out the humanity of the character. He actually saves people, he's concerned for the other heroes, he's a little bubbly and snarky, he's not all business. you see a little of that in the snyder cut with the "I didn't smell good before?" line, but for the most part I don't feel like the Snyder supes understands what makes the big blue boy scout interesting.

I'm not saying that there aren't good Superman goes bad stories, what I'm saying is I feel like it kinda betrays a core part of the character and what makes him interesting when you do that. The marvel equivalent would be making Captain America evil, yeah the comics have done that, but I feels like it completely changes something core to the character. Which in writing can be a good thing if done well cause it makes you think about what makes that character interesting and work.

      I would recommend watching his interviews talking about Superman, it’s clear that he understands the character, I can actually sent the video if you want.
      The Christ thing isn’t much of a unique in the Snyder version, other versions before had the Christ metaphor more heavy handed like smallville, donner, Silver Age, Superman returns; the smell good bit was from whedon’s cut, Snyder Cut was the “you spoke”. Snyder Superman has shown a lot of the humanity traits that we know him for, like when Clark goes through Gotham to write a story to spread word about Gotham citizens issues and strive for social justice through journalism, or how excited to tell Martha about his ancestry that he discover, to always take a car ride to a place when he’s not doing superhero activities. Whedon’s actually just waits for steppenwolf to tear cyborg apart and talks about truth and justice, the reference of do you bleed, lifted a empty school building just cuz flash handles a random family that wasn’t relevant to anything and the beginning of the movie. Where ZSJL had Superman save cyborg by taking the hit and beats up steppenwolf down in the same location where they address that it’s a abandoned city.
      I feel that whedon’s is a shallow impression than anything else, especially considering how whedon is actually like as a person.
      I would say watch Superman returns, but it’s the reason why people say that Superman is repetitive, mostly because it repeats a lot of things from the donner films.

I'm just not a fan of the really contemplative Superman that feels depressed by being superman, I don't like the end og the world dark side stuff they seemed to have been building up to, and a lot more nitpicky stuff in the Snyder cut,I have nitpicky stuff with the Wheaton cut too, just not as much.

I honestly was excited about the Darkseid foreshadowing and that it was part of a big story. I rather have the 3-4 hour long dc movies that have a more serious story with the dry humor that are more philosophical and mythical with the characters being capable of being the characters, than WB trying to copy marvel’s movie gimmick, like agitated avengers.

    As great as JLU's "Workd of Cardboard" speech is, it's kinda undercut by the fact that the legendary beating Superman promises to give is ultimately, like, two punches (and the Darkseid pulls some plot device bs out his ass and wins the fight anyway).
    "Justice League: Apokolips War," despite being an edgelord's wet dream, has a similar Superman/Darkseid fight that's way more satisfying. Superman goes absolutely apeshit on Darkseid, beating him up, gouging his eyes with his thumbs and thrashing his body around, tossing him like a ragdoll...it's a very cathartic scene and I wish JLU did something like that. Maybe not as brutal, but really push the limit of what they could get away with showing on what was ostensibly a kid's cartoon.

    This is why whenever anyone says Superman is one bad day from turning evil falls on its face. And using Injustice Superman is a terrible example of what Superman stands for, because in the end, he falls to a good version of himself.
