I actually loved the story in this one. There were a lot of main characters, and none of them seemed extraneous. They all had something to do.
Ngl this is one of my all time favorite Showa films. I loved the fun, lighthearted tone and the amazing practical effects with Ebirah. Also the humans had great personalities and didn't bore out the story.
this movie had a LOT of play during the Creature Features show over the years.
That's what I'm saying. I never got why this film has such a mediocre to bad reputation when other, more popular Showa films have weaker and more boring human elements - Three Headed Monster and Destroy All Monsters come to mind. Imo of course.
This one always slotted in with G vs Mothra. G vs Mecha G, and Son of Godzilla for me. Fun, relatively breezy, colorful G romps with humans that have enough personality to them to make their parts not totally drag.

This is one of the most fun of the old Godzilla movies. I actually love the silly human story, the off-beat surf music, and the tropical setting.
I always assumed the first Godzilla (1954) was impervious to electricity, while the second incarnation of the character was weak to it, yet grew somewhat resistant. In Raids again I rationalise Godzilla's somewhat resistance to adrenaline, he's in the heat of battle with Anguirus. In King Kong vs Godzilla tho, he clearly has a weakness to it, yet progressively (from Mothra vs - vs Megalon) his constant exposure grants him some resistance to it, eventually he's even able to utilise it offensively in vs Mechagodzilla. IDK
To me it was never an issue. Here, it simply wakes him up, but I imagine it still hurt. Similar to how we will use electricity in a defibrillator to restore someone’s normal heart rate, yet if you gave that shock to a person under normal circumstances it would hurt terribly. Godzilla is clearly hurt by electricity, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t inadvertently gain a boost of energy or at the very least wake up from it.
I mean, if you got hit by a bolt of lightning, you'd wake up too, wouldn't you? 😂🤣😂🦖
Don't remember where I saw it but someone said it could have something to do with direct current vs alternating current. Lightning is direct current while the electricity we use to power things is alternating current.
Just wanna say the part about the sociopathic Ebirah splashing Goji literally cracked me up like Humpty Dumpty going ice skating. Love your reviews.
Always enjoyed this one for some reason. It’s got a likable cast of characters and the island adventure is fun and a nice change of pace. Yeah I can obviously see it being a Kong film originally but having Godzilla instead gives this it’s weird unique identity.
Unpopular opinion: I really like this movie and honestly it would make a great video game.

When I first saw this as a teen I wasn't that impressed by this film, but going back and re-watching it early in this year, I really came around to love it. So much soul in it, from the efforts done in the fights, setting, and music. The human cast and plot is nice and straightforward and sometimes, that's all you need.
It's just flat out a good Godzilla movie.

Never understood why this one had a meh reputation. It's human story is not nearly as dry as some other Showa era films and once it picks up it's crazy fun and entertaining.
In my chronological watch, just got up to ebirah last night and it is drastically lower in quality in all ares from the series highs, felt way more like a tv movie, not nearly as epic with a much smaller scale than the previous movies, and a bunch of silly moments. I missed the epic scores of the previous movies, the james bond/surf music was so out of place. Ebirah as a villain is great and the few scenes of him attacking ships and boats is amazing but overall it was no where near the quality of the 3 films that preceded it, which had silly moments but i loved (mothra vs godzill, ghidorah the 3 headed monster, and astro monster) which were all much larger scale than Ebirah felt to me
@@ericg1100I feel the complete opposite. After Astro Monster was so over the top with its stakes it was refreshing to have a much more grounded Godzilla film. Plus this has some of the best monster sequences in the series up to this point. This doesn’t have the issue a lot of Honda’s films had of constantly replaying the same shots of model tanks firing over and over to fill out the runtime.

I always saw myself as Godzilla when I was in the water.
I pretended to be Godzilla coming out of the sea ready to fight King Ghidorah, Mothra or some other monster.
I’m sure a lot of other G-fans have done this too.
This channel is a very underestimated godzilla history channel. I can tell you really care about the craft

I was watching these in order while I was sick over the weekend. Happy to see this one come out, and excited to watch it when I get out of work. All the previous videos are incredibly well researched, and put together. Very entertaining.
This was one of my favorites. As others have said, the cast made this a step above other Big G films.
This was my first godzilla film, so it will always occupy a special place in my heart.
18:24 I love this part because Godzilla was mad that Ebirah caught the Rock instead of keeping up their Volleyball/Tennis game, Godzilla was crying foul and decided to stop playing since Ebirah wasn't playing properly. Showa is great because anyone, reguardless of age or langauge could understand what the monsters were doing and thinking.
Definitely one of the most underrated Godzilla movies (IMO). Masaru Sato's music, I think blended well with Jun Fukuda's style of direction (the same would be true with Son of Godzilla & Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla).
I think that had Fukuda lived well into the 2000s, with all of the G festivals and conventions now in full blossom, his tone towards his kaiju work might have changed, as he would have seen all of the love and appreciation many fans had with his films.
The music was absolutely the worst part of the movie, felt so out of place in every scene besides the first appearance of ebirah
As a Godzilla fan, it makes me sad to hear that a Godzilla movie was almost filmed in my homeland but didn't because of budget restraints
Ah, one of my first fee movies that got me into Godzilla. I still have my VHS copy. Crazy enough, still works.fine to this day.

Great review and deep dive as always bro! Learning about how one of the lovely Toho ladies threatened to take her life during filming of that Bond film was intense! Thank God everything worked out in the end for her. Some of the themes in this film even remind me of Bond films too. And I agree Ebirah's suit and the water scenes are impressive, I think this is definitely a underrated entry. Lol that Golden Boy anime clip was perfect as well! Keep up the great work!

But I like watching the behind the scenes for myself. I didnt grow up on Showa stuff but it's all fascinating nonetheless. Keep on keeping on. It's funny how Ookondoru is, so far, the only actual feathered bird monster in the main films, both Japanese and American. Hell, aside from the Godzilla Power Hour which had a couple of giant birds and Godzilla the Series which had Quetzalcoatl and the Giant Hummingbirds, he's the only bird in the greater franchise.
This is unironically in my top five godzilla movies. I had to get a second vhs as a kid.
Loved this movie as a kid. Like you, I used to watch it for the monster fights, but in hindsight it also had one of the best human stories of the Showa era. It reminds me of old-school Doctor Who. Good guys accidentally arrive somewhere and rescue an oppressed population from slavery by using their brains rather than attacking with guns. The main characters are all given something to do, and having one of them get captured was a good way to connect the slave-rebellion sub-plot to the main story. It's a feel good movie, and everything about it is so 60's. The music, the fashion, even the colourfulness of the sets and costumes. Considering the budget and the limitations of technology at the time everything looks great.
This is the best one yet! Keep it up!
Great video! The Godzilla x Electricity trope has always been a tad conflicting - in 1954 it couldn’t stop him from entering Tokyo but in King Kong v Godzilla it hurt him. Then of course the Ebirah thing, then it powers him up in Mecha Godzilla (1) and then again in Return of Godzilla, although I suppose that lighting was nuclear powered considering that plot point.
Fun fact, they modified Ebirah's roar for Gigan in Zone Fighter.

Batman Meets Godzilla is an unmade Godzilla film. It was intended to be a collaboration between Toho and Greenway Productions. Two separate treatments exist, one by Shinichi Sekizawa and the other by an unknown American author; the former was titled Batman vs. Godzilla (バットマン対ゴジラ Battoman tai Gojira). The American treatment is available at the American Heritage Center in the University of Wyoming, as part of a collection of papers belonging to Batman producer William Dozier.
Oh, yes. I am all too familiar with Rankin Bass. As soon as you mentioned them, 'Bumble' was the first thing that came to mind, unfortunately. I'm glad I'm not the only one who 💩 themselves whenever they see him. The winter warlock is another one that freaks me out every time. So naturally, I avoid them like the plague.

I had seen Godzilla on TV in the 90s and I saw this movie on VHS on a store and begged my mom to buy it. It was $3 but we were poor so when my mom bought it, I watched it any chance I could. Sometimes 3 times a day.
I really like this movie. It’s one of the ones that gets shit on a lot, and I’ve never understood it.

Instead of having to explain the Happy Days comparison, you could have used the It’s Always Sunny episode with the same premise, which would’ve been trippy as all hell cutting from a 1966 Japanese dance competition to “Karate... snow machine chopsit!... Don't ask me why but this is my favorite Godzilla costume (1965 model same one as from Astro Monster) it's not menacing as most others but it's so ghetto & crappy that I just always loved it & it still looks cool to me cuz I'm a weirdo plus it's like the most rarest & expensive Godzilla figure when it comes to this costume model if you're a collector , I got the X-plus 25 cm two pack of Godzilla & Ebirah & it's awesome
When I watched this on TV as a kid my older brother said that Godzilla wasn't scary looking any more.

Hi there Big Action Bill. Love your channel. I've been writing my own version of the film. My version is called Godzilla, King Kong, Ebirah: Operation Robinson Crusoe. In it Ryota is not going out to sea to find his brother, he wants to become a thief like Yoshimura. I made Yoshimura into more of a Lupin the third type of character, with two other thieves in his gang. I pulled Mothra out of the story because I thought she felt shoe-horned into the plot. Dr. Hu and his Mechani-Kong are in this story as well.
What do you think? Do you have any ideas on how you would improve the movie?
I don't think there's any mystery why Ebirah would avoid a cloud of yellow liquid in the water.

I think the human story in this movie is one of the better ones, but there is too much of it and not enough kaiju action. Ebirah suit is terrific.
While not my favourite Godzilla movie its still pretty good the one thing that always threw me was the flexibility of the claw prop it always takes me out of this movie and moves it down in my appreciation. It is also the only Godzilla movie I can think of where he is not the focus of the human plot. They have gad B story lines not involving Godzilla directly but not A story lines.
