I own a Boater... it’s my absolute least worn hat (and I wear a hat everyday). I just don’t find a lot of options, in my wardrobe, that it look good with a Boater. But, I did pull it out of its box to wear it while watching this episode of Gentlemen’s Gazette. 🤠 Thanks for the video!

I love the self satisfied look on Preston's face at 8:17 where he knows his features makes that hat look good. Good for him, lucky chap. I'm from the UK, so my use for a straw boater would probably limited to punting on the river, which is one of the few remaining social situations where it would look perfectly normal, and not an affectation. In terms of boating occasions, a UK person could probably pull off this look at Henley Regatta, but probably not during Cowes Week. That is because this look goes well with varnished wooden-hulled boats, but clashes with the modernity of white fibreglass yachts.

I recently bought a cheap straw boater on eBay and the brim was very bent and uneven, but my dad gave me a good tip to even it out. Just drip a little water around the whole brim, put it on an iron board and iron the brim flat with a towel in between. Let it dry and sit for a while and then you have a cheap, but good looking boater!
The cowboy hat tradition still sees straw switch to felt per season. Typically Memorial Day and Labor Day. It's a regional/cultural thing, so I can see it outside this channel's immediate scope, but in Texas, gentlemen have specific cuts for suits and formal wear. Might be worth a video
Is a boater hat difficult to size and fit properly? It looks as stiff as a bowler and different head shapes may be problematic. Some heads are oval in shape while others are round.
Great video, as usual. However, I have to point out that you need a smaller boater. It should never sit so low that it's resting on or, as in your case, bending down one's ears.
I originally thought that boater is for casual occasions until watched this😂😂.Preston ,to be honest,I think you can achieve further improvement by shining your shoes 😅.Look forward to watch your video about your shoe collection! 😁

I like the boater, because not only can I place it on my lap when a lovely lady walks by, but I'll always have a job on a steamboat. Oh, I can also coordinate it with my Colonel Sanders outfit.
You don't discuss the height of the boater at all. The one worn in the video seems taller than I'd like and also has a soft slightly rounded top. I like the more traditional style short with a flat top but can't seem to find anywhere to purchase one.
Where I come from you'd be called "fancy" just by tucking the shirt in the pants. To many who are used to see shorts, tees and baseball caps everywhere, a classical boater hat would naturally look odd.
Yes.. It is recommended to varnish the new boater with Yacht Varnish... It will strengthen it slightly and of course waterproof it and protect it from staining better. In addition it darkens the straw giving it a honey hue. Harrow School in London offers their hats with this option. Note: The Harrow hat itself is never referred to as a ‘Boater’ but as the ‘Harrow Straw hat’.. Just a little aside.. Hope this is useful.!
@@TheMintyMelon Thank you for you reply. Can I do this myself? or should I take it to an expert and/or can you recommend anyone? (preferably in GB/UK🇬🇧). If I do it myself, then would I have to remove the headband, lining and hatband ribbon? I am not a good at sewing!😉
@@RT65CB-SWL No don’t worry …You wouldn’t have to remove either the ribbon or the lining to do this. However if you did prefer to remove the ribbon to varnish underneath, when replacing it you can use 2 double sided sticky pads just at the joining point. Not against the hat tho’. Just ribbon over ribbon. They will hold it very nicely in place. One important tip: The hat will remain tacky to the touch for a while after varnishing. Set it aside for about 3-5 days depending on room temperature and sunshine before handling it again… Also, there will be some odor from it afterwards. Personally, I don’t like it but it does lesson with time … A few drops of lavender oil against the lining do help.😉!
The boater hat looks good; im more of a trillby type as I think it rounds out a matching suit. Boater hats seem to fit better with a blazer or seersucker. This is all just opinion.
Preston, don’t listen to detractors. You look good in a boater. Would look great at Dapper Days at Disney. Any vintage gal would be happy to walk with you down the street. Question. Would pairing with Seersucker be appropriate? Or is seersucker too informal. Again, you look swell. Very dapper. Keep up the good work.

You're right it's worn just at the top of your head
Is this a reference to Harold Lloyd
Will this clash with my ALPARGATAS?
Where I come from you'd be called "fancy" just by tucking the shirt in the pants. To many who are used to see shorts, tees and baseball caps everywhere, a classical boater hat would naturally look odd.
Where could I buy a hat like that online?
Do you or does anyone have any tips on how to care for and look after a straw boater ?
I want this hat. Its impossible to find the boater straw
The basher is also used in south african all boy old fashioned style high schools as an identifier of the prefects
What a great hat!
Thumbs up 👍.. great content
I know felt is too heavy, but I can’t do straw. What about canvas?
Canvas is too hot. You'd be better off with linen, just don't expect perfect creases. imho.
I wish I could find vintage hats but I have an abnormally large head so I've never been able to find one that fits me.
Love the Sargent portrait at 1:56. Actually did a copy of it once. I've seen a boater worn casually once (with a pattern short sleeve shirt and chino shorts), and it actually didn't look too bad. It was near the beach in Florida. You probably don't agree with styling it that way. But yeah,...this is a bit of a push to pull this off. The blazer at 8:27 looks very good. But yeah, I could never pull this off..
Hats add more elegance.
Is there anywhere I could get a good quality stiff boater hat? I’m trying to find one to complete a summer suit of mine
Edit: I’m also trying to get one for my Towering Pillar of Hats
Nice video. The history was interesting. A lot of commotion about hats.
Where can I buy a boater hat? Any website that you may recommend?
For the hat in the video it was produced by Scala and sold on Amazon
Thank you
