I think the key to wearing a fedora is to "own" the look. If you don't feel comfortable wearing them, then don't. Great video. Can you make a video for flat caps and newsboy hats?
For the most part, I looked at Indiana Jones as a means to dress up my fedora. Khakis, button down shirt, sport coat/leather jacket, boots. Dress it up from there. It's honestly much easier that way to get more out of your fedora, but it also depends what kind of fedora you get as well. I purposefully got a hat styled like Indy's because it can go with a nice suit, a hike or even to the park. Though the thing about the sunglasses... I don't wear them to keep the sun out of my eyes. I wear them because it gets very, very bright in California during the summer. The hat keeps the sun out of my eyes while my sunglasses keep my eyes from being burned by the bright sun. Also the Blues Brothers make it look cool.
I once had a black leather fedora from Wilson's. It was sharp, and the brim did snap. I also had a single-breasted suit in black leather. With a white silk shirt, white spats, and a narrow grey leather tie, it really worked.
During my university days I wore, my wide brimmed heat with a leather jacket, but I might have been to strongly influenced by Indiana Jones. But my purpose was having a great rain protection and not to look stylish, and very few things beat a good hat for rain protection.
Umbrella sucks in windy climates. During my uni years i commuted a lot by foot. Had waterproof running jacket with hood to wear. Would place over backpack as well. Umbrella is really bad in wind.
Ich habe mir vorgenommen am Samstag den 26. August 2017 mir einen Fedora anfertigen zu lassen. Welch vorteilhafte Partie, dass nun ein Video darüber erscheint. Ein Danke dafür.
Good video, agree with most of what is said, I have always had a hat on, since my dad gave me one of his when I was 12 or 13, still have one with me all the time and I'm 55 now, my hats my choice of how and when and no matter what clothes I have on, from bib overalls in the barn to dressed up going out. My hats are a part of me like my beard... sorry I just do not fit into the box people make for how and when to wear a hat.
I wear fedoras with any style clothing. I have some nice ones that I wear with suits, but I have a couple well worn fedoras, one in tan and the other chocolate brown, that I wear with anything, including my casual outfits.
I have found these tips very interesting & I have learnt a lot about the FEDORA. Which I will buy one now with using your tips, to bring it back into fashion for the Australian male.
Michael Jackson got me into wearing these hats. I ordered one in Amazon that looks extremely identical to him and I snapped the rear brim all the way up to the rear of the crown despite how weird it might look like to give more of an MJ style and I literally get a lot of stares from anyone whenever I go outside, but I received no compliments from it whereas I don't need it to.
I wear my hat for three reasons: protection from the rain, the sun and the cold. I take it off in the car. A fur felt is perfect for the chilly coastal air in northern California.
You my friend understand what everyone else is missing. While everyone is wearing a beanie or ballcap with their overcoats and blazers (which looks quite childish), you understand that the appropriate hat to wear with an overcoat or blazer is the fedora.
I've upgraded my wardrobe in the past two years, and I rarely wear my black overcoat anymore. I installed wear a navy blue double breasted that goes below my knees, I also prefer to wear a newsboy cap instead of hats, though hats is still something I wear.
I wear Fedoras, but also flat caps, Trilbys, baseball caps and watch caps. The main problem I have with Fedoras in the modern age is most cars today have raised headrests that will knock you hat when sitting down in the seat. Not a problem with most cars built before the mid-to-late 60's.
The Dope Chronoscope Also, very important. A gentleman removes his hat in an elevator when a lady steps in - or - if a lady is already in the elevator, remove your hat upon entering or once entered immediately remove it and give a courtesy nod to the lady followed by “ma’am.”
@@CrimsonRaven51 Trouble with that is your hair may be so fussed up when you pull the hat off that the lady may chuckle at how you look. I'd keep the hat on.
@@andrewlosseff2361 I beg to differ. The effect on coiffure is the reason ladies traditionally don't remove hats indoors. Also, ladies hats tend to to be fashion or "statement" pieces. Now that men's hats are likely to be fashion items, should etiquette be more flexible?
My uncle taught me about the Dress Hat, as he designed them for Leslie James which was located in Downtown Los Angeles. When my father's Hat's need a refreshing he would blocked them new band and feather's.. Quick Tip if your Brim is looking out of shape lightly sprinkle some water on the brim then gently rub it around then shape your Brim to your likings .😁
If you head into Crown Heights you'll blend in with a black fedora, I wear mine for religious reasons but also because i love the way I can personalize the overall look and love myself even more. I don't care about the stares cause all that matters is my confidence.
My Lock & Co. Homburg is fully lined with pinches. It keeps my head warm without giving me hat hair and I haven't seen anyone else wearing a Homburg. Fedoras are so common around everywhere.
Collecting is half the equation...am sure you'll find a good reason to start wearing them one day. For me, my enemy is UV, so head cover (aka hats) all the way...until it's become my unintended signature and I can always be spotted a fair distance away! Haha.. :-D Have a good day.
My grandfather always chose brown and navy blue and i don't know why he didn't have any beaver hat (most of the old people here don't have one) in terms of quality the rabbit hat is the best feeling and looking, but not so durable (the rabbit hats deteriorated more then the wool hats). Also in the '50 and '60 it seems that everyone wore mostly fedoras, both in europe and in america is it true?
Excellent video, love the history and context you provide. For me the gateway drug into Fedoras was a second-hand Stetson Stratoliner in their "royal" range. The felt has a luxurious soft feel and can easily be shaped to suit. (You will want to get rid of the cheap-looking factory press.) The colour I got, "Caribou", is a wonderful complex taupe that goes with most things. (It can look brown, grey, taupe, or even have an olive cast according to the light and what you're wearing it with.) I don't wear the fedora with a suit, but with everyday casual clothes, and always get compliments.
Rabbids and hairs! Oh yeah! That aside, good video. I was especially intrigued to learn about the Cavanagh edge - I hadn't known about that before.I think this video could benefit from a discussion of other materials that these hats are made of. Clearly, the classics felt and straw in the Panama are covered, but what about other materials? A lot of cheap ones are made in cotton or linen, which can look very cheap but there are some very good ones as well.I think a generalised hat and cap video for the modern man outside of formal events (no need to talk about top hats, we know what they are for) would be good - covering other alternatives like flat caps and newsboy caps (I am a flat cap man myself, I wear them every day).
I got my first fedora , unfortunately its not felt. Its cheap around 2 bucks. Cant even snap the brim. Finally a friend of mine got a felt fedora from a Japanese thrift store and sold to me around 10 bucks. It's really soft and water resistant. I really love it. I normally wear at night with my traditional attire (Baju Melayu) especially its raining. I wear cowboy hat during the day.
"I'm here today to tell you that because of your family's service to our country, you have been pre-selected for entrance into the local Vault. Vault 111." Great video :)
I agree with you on that; a man with a well-worn hat will never go out of style. I mean I'm a woman and wear a light coloured fedora all the time during the warmer months, and I get compliments on it from close friends (who quite love it) as well as people when I'm about in public.
I wear a brown wide brimmed fedora as my everyday wear hat during the winter, and spring and a tan panama dueing the summer, but so.etimes I enterchange them depending ony mood. Of course i also am never seen without my hat even if im just in a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. Its just my personal style.
It will be quite a challenge to find a man who can pull it off with full old school fashion and class. In the present time, the reputation of fedoras have completely been ruined by the "nice guys" and the white knights AKA basement dwelling incels...
I just got my first Fedora, an AdVintage Harrison Fedora Raiders Turn in True Sable Rabbits Fur felt. I wore it with a Safari Shirt and a brown leather jacket and jeans. Looks awesome.
Before I moved to the tropics, I bought a great fedora from John Helmer Haberdashery, downtown Portland Oregon. I loved the hat and wore it as an everyday hat. Just like my dad back in the 50's and early 60's. I knew it was going to be too warm to wear in Hawai'i, so I gave it away to a good home.... My favorite style of the hats shown in this video was at 4:49... I would go with a shade of brown though.
I love the fedora hat and I did come as a gangster for Halloween looking like Al Capone once as a kid. But Today I only wear a fedora in the fall sometimes when visiting New York City, I am from New Jersey. I use it in an Indiana jones look with a leather jacket, without the suit. Many times, I wear the fedora with the brim up too. I love fedora hats but like you said if I wear one with a pinstriped double-breasted suit I look like a mobster from old and not in tune with today's style. So I do not do that! Great channel.
I clicked the video to read the hateful comments but this video was really interesting. I like to learn about the history of things and this guy did a good job at informing about fedoras. Still won’t wear one though. I can’t pull that off.
Once I find a fedora that I generally like the looks of I steam it to shape the crown and brim to my liking. I do the same thing with cowboy hats. I keep my fedoras in hat boxes so I don't have to worry about moths. My favorite fedora is a Stetson Whippet from the 1950s. It looks like it was made yesterday. Luckily it fits me so perfectly that even in strong winds it's like it's glued to my head. The best part is it only cost $50.00 at a vintage clothing store.
Thanks for the review and tips. Do you have any insights/advise into mitigating "hat head", regardless of whether one wears a fedora, homburg, or flat cap? If you're inside for an extended period of time and must take the hat off, what is a good measure against the headband marks?
Great video, love the channel! Great job!! Just a note about the cuff links - unless the stones have been dyed, they cannot be malachite, as malachite is always green. The blue Color of the stones would lead me to believe they are either lapis lazuli or sodalite (if the color is natural, untreated)
I remember when men always had nice hats and dressed sharpe. Today It’s just too casual and most folk have no class. They go out without much consideration for how they really look.
I have one from Tonak. It’s czech handmade hat from rabbit fur. Love this style... feel good in this kind of outfits. Coat and fedora, this combination i like most. I am 14, but i like it. One thing i don’t get till today is why is “everything branded” today’s style... greetings from slovakia!
Terrific video!! Very complete and fun! I don't use hats, just jockeys sometimes, but for my skin i decided to buy a Fedora Hat, to protect it. I'm sorry isn't in Spanish, it cost me follow you, but very very good video. Thank you!
The most complicated thing about the fedora these days is not even how it fits your overall look but how well it goes with who you are - your occupation, demeanor, your stance and sense of humor, even the people you hang out with. The fedora has such a strong presence and character that it truly has to fit your own, and that's incredibly hard to even pinpoint, let alone pull off. Sometimes I see a man with a near perfect dress sense sporting a fedora which would look astonishing in a still image, but it just doesn't work with that person's character and attitude. And then some men wear fedoras that are maybe a bit affordable and would look rubbish on anyone else, but they suit them perfectly. Well, I guess clothes are not the only thing that makes a gentleman.
I think they look best when the hat is cocked a little to one side, and slightly back. How one wears the hat is equally as important. I love a nice hat. I mourn the days when a nice hat was a necessity.
Have you seen the different Indiana Jones fedoras that are out there? Some are pretty high quality and look great. That is where I was first introduced to this style of hat is by watching those movies.
Just a note as friendly criticism; I love these videos and the quality is superb but today I found a little oversight that shouldn´t be there. At 04:10 the word deuterated appeared in reference to quality going down while the correct word should had been deteriorated. The term deuterated is a chemical one and is in reference at when Hydrogen has been substituted by Deuterium. Keep on doing your excellent job and thank you for continuous efforts. Best regards.
I'm like lower middle class I do small things around and help out like a job but don't get paid. Im like lower class I guess. It doesn't matter. Love the videos and I remember where I got my Fedora Hat and I am getting back into wearing it. I love my hat. I rather be a classic hat wearing man with etiquette. Hat etiquette is very important.
Good video with lots of interesting information. My only critique is about “hat etiquette”. I think some of that stuff is, thankfully, dead. If you’re sitting in front of someone in a theater, it’s probably a good and considerate thing to take off your hat so you don’t obstruct someone’s view.. but just taking off your hat inside for the sake of “etiquette” is kinda silly to me. I wear my hats where I want and never take it off for the sake of tradition. If someone has a legitimate reason why taking off my hat will equal being considerate of others, I’ve got no problems with that. Otherwise, worry about you.
I wish neckbeards had adopted the fez or something so they didn't tarnish the fedora

The hat keeps the sun out of my eyes while my sunglasses keep my eyes from being burned by the bright sun. Also the Blues Brothers make it look cool.

Outstanding video, I wear fedora and Panama's all the time, get many compliments, old school.
Bought a Stetson Fedora 40 yrs ago while in Manhattan and it's still looks great and finally its broken in!
Love a nice fedora. I wear one I purchased in Port Townsend, WA. Fits perfectly and is so well made (Scala).
Wat about an umbrella?

It has been 3 years, any news about your hats?
Well said Sir! I'm getting a fedora!
Honestly fedoras are underrated.
Thanks neckbeards.
I wear my hat for three reasons: protection from the rain, the sun and the cold. I take it off in the car. A fur felt is perfect for the chilly coastal air in northern California.
I wear a black fedora and a black, double breasted, overcoat when i'm outside.
You my friend understand what everyone else is missing. While everyone is wearing a beanie or ballcap with their overcoats and blazers (which looks quite childish), you understand that the appropriate hat to wear with an overcoat or blazer is the fedora.
@@seanfl4015 or the Homburg for more formal occasions.
Yes, that’s also a good hat choice for more formal events.
I keep a fresh double breastbcoat for the outside and a HUGO BOSS with a red tie with fine fedora. perfect for office related wear. 😊
One should also remove their hat while eating, unless at an outdoor event.
The Dope Chronoscope Or when inside.
@@ACitizenOfOurWorld That is right.Modern ladies don't understand this
@@andrewlosseff2361 I beg to differ. The effect on coiffure is the reason ladies traditionally don't remove hats indoors. Also, ladies hats tend to to be fashion or "statement" pieces.
Now that men's hats are likely to be fashion items, should etiquette be more flexible?
Thank youuuuuuuuuu! I just purchased a brown fur felt fedora. It’s awesome! Thank you for your advise! Cheers!
Thanks for the tip
If you head into Crown Heights you'll blend in with a black fedora, I wear mine for religious reasons but also because i love the way I can personalize the overall look and love myself even more. I don't care about the stares cause all that matters is my confidence.
I have been waiting for a good video on Fedoras. Thank you for this.
My Lock & Co. Homburg is fully lined with pinches. It keeps my head warm without giving me hat hair and I haven't seen anyone else wearing a Homburg. Fedoras are so common around everywhere.
The only person in the 21st century who's not 110 years old who knows how to wear a fedora properly.
great guide! just bought my first felt hat with a large brim, not for wearing for style - but for rain/weather protection. Maybe ill try it tho
Do you wear Fedoras?
Hi, prepare yourself to receive a lot of weirds comments on this video because fedora hat are a meme from 4chan community !
Every day!
There isn't a day when I don't.

Yes, frequently.
Freddy Kruger loved his fedora
I have the Stetson whipet , open road , stratoliner , and Saxon . Love them all
Very informative. Thank you! Hats are necessary for me and I wear them all year round. I don't even notice putting them on anymore
Colbieman
I wish I was at your level. I collect them but, never wear them.
Collecting is half the equation...am sure you'll find a good reason to start wearing them one day. For me, my enemy is UV, so head cover (aka hats) all the way...until it's become my unintended signature and I can always be spotted a fair distance away! Haha.. :-D Have a good day.
That's one swell fedora you have there sir!
I love fedoras, my main one is cheaper but still looks very nice. Though stiff and unshapable, I like it so it doesn’t look as worn over time
It’s a nice looking charcoal-black with a grey/white ribbon and really goes with any nice outfit I have since I normally wear grey or black
purchased a vintage borsalino this morning. thank you so much for all of your videos.
Wonderful video Sven. This is the video I was waiting for. Huge fan of fedoras and trillbies. Keep up the great work!
A hat maker in my town, Del Monico's still makes cavenaugh brims
I have one of these. I like wearing it.

It’s true, everybody loves a sharp dressed man. Even if it’s a little eccentric, as long as it has taste.
I firmly believe that a man is not properly dressed without his hat. Even tho my wife is not of the same mind.
I agree with you on that; a man with a well-worn hat will never go out of style.
I mean I'm a woman and wear a light coloured fedora all the time during the warmer months, and I get compliments on it from close friends (who quite love it) as well as people when I'm about in public.

Excellent, love the fedora hat, I have two which I truly enjoy!
I wore a black reservation hat (unshaped) with a silver concho band and a peacock feather tucked in the band. Try and top that!! It was so much fun.
As a woman, I love a Fedora on a man who can carry it off. I have two that I wear.
It will be quite a challenge to find a man who can pull it off with full old school fashion and class. In the present time, the reputation of fedoras have completely been ruined by the "nice guys" and the white knights AKA basement dwelling incels...
I'm a panama hat woman, myself. They're great.
I just got my first Fedora, an AdVintage Harrison Fedora Raiders Turn in True Sable Rabbits Fur felt. I wore it with a Safari Shirt and a brown leather jacket and jeans. Looks awesome.

Words from a dead man.
Wear a top hat instead.
Sven, your videos have been helpful for me I've been getting into suits and your videos have helped thank you
I love the fedora hat and I did come as a gangster for Halloween looking like Al Capone once as a kid.
Real gentleman's wear fedoras
I clicked the video to read the hateful comments but this video was really interesting. I like to learn about the history of things and this guy did a good job at informing about fedoras. Still won’t wear one though. I can’t pull that off.
Great point with the sunglasses! Great video!
Thanks. Great video! We have a great hatter near us (Buckaroo Hatters) that makes high quality Cowboy hats but also some fantastic Fedoras.
My whole community still wears them (Orthodox Jews). I get the feeling that they keep Borsellino in business. They wear all black hats, by the way.
I love Borsalino and I have like ten of them!
It is appalling to see a nicely dressed woman in the company of a man who looks as if he's taking out the garbage.

Good information on this super classic hat....p.s. the wardrobe your wearing is an awesome combo....good job Sven. 👏
Could you do a video on concealed carry of firearms while dressing snazzy?
And a follow-up video where you practice quick draw and blow several holes in your 5K Kiton jacket.
For serious, leather shoulder holsters will NEVER go out of style, but check your state's concealed carry laws first
With a fedora, you carry your chopper in a violin case.

Really good video. Well spoken, great tips and good information 👍🏼
Man you make me wanna get one of this bad boy Now that I know the difference Thanks nice video
