Alternative oil (UNTESTED) that I've seen recommended is Royal Purple Max Gear Oil 75W90.

Would it be practical to flush it with diesel fuel instead? Diesel is a good and inexpensive stuff to clean parts, it's also lubricating a little bit but it removes old grease and washs away old oil and contamination.
Since it has a thin consistency you could remove it completely before you refill the hub with the new oil.

@@simonm1447 great thought. You know, I think that or some sort of mineral spirit could work pretty well for the flush cycle.
