    Why do these people think they're always going to be in a situation where they're going to be heroes in a gun fight against 3 guys with a machine gun? The revolver is a fine weapon for personal defense!

      Because the feds either break in your house in the dead of night to kill you or they go to your workplace and drag you to jail or kill you.
      Carry a real gun. You're not good enough to bring a revolver to a fight where you're outnumbered by men with better weapons and equipment than you. You're doing yourself a disservice by carrying a weapon with less than 12 rounds just because you think it's cooler.

      It's an American fetish. The vast majority of us private citizens who watch these videos and regularly carry don't live in bad or sketchy areas. We'll most likely never be in situations where we'll need to use our firearm. And if we do, only a few rounds would do. There hasn't even been not one "good guy with a gun" in any notable mass shootings (aside from Buffalo). Ironically the people who would be best served for this stuff aren't on here watching these videos, they don't carry, and a good portion don't even own firearms.

    I think the revolver still has a definite place in this world, especially for people that live like I do. I have been open carrying a 686+, 6”, pre internal lock for about 7 years. We live in the boonies or on the road in remote places the huge majority of the year. I need it to be multi faceted when it comes to filling rolls and so my cylinder load out changes based on where I am going and what roll I might need it to fill. Generally, it has 2 rounds of 180 grain hard cast Buffalo Bore, 2 rounds of 38 special handloads that aren’t very loud or fast, and 3 rounds of 125 grain Gold Dot. If I’m out walking around, I rotate the cylinder to the Buffalo Bore for possible bear or cougar encounters. If I see some bunnies or other small game, the 38 special gets used. If I’m headed to town or someone stops at the bottom of my driveway, I rotate over to the Gold Dot. Switching between different magazines and clearing the chambered round would be a pain in the ass with a semi-auto. Great video!

    While this was about concealed carry, the fire-power that magnum revolvers offer over semi-autos is often overlooked when considering hunting and woods protection. Those same large frame revolvers are not a bad choice for home defense or other defensive roles where concealment is not the priority.

    • @wehrewulf
      @wehrewulf 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Firepower is a factor of capacity, and volume of fire, not the round's kinetic energy. Your point is understood, but the terminology is incorrect.

    • @Clambelly
      @Clambelly 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wehrewulf So what firearm has more firepower? Let's keep it simple, and compare revolver vs. revolver and not complicate the equation with revolver vs. semi-auto. S&W X-Frame .460 6rds vs. S&W 617 .22 10rds ? Your contention is that the .22 revolver has more firepower than the .460? If you say that the .22 has more firepower than the .460, then all you doing is saying firepower is synonymous with capacity. And if that is the case, then the term firepower is meaningless. Based on your definition of firepower if we take 2 single-shot firearms, one is chambered in .22 LR and the other .45-70 Gov't. both have the same firepower, because they have the same capacity and volume of fire. Do you see how silly your comment is ?

    • @Clambelly
      @Clambelly 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Like I was taught when I first started to shoot. Gun control is firing one time and hitting your target. Take that extra long second and make sure you hit the target with the first shot, and the gun fight is over with. Revolvers teach deliberation and control. That's a lot better than spraying ammo and hoping to hit the target. But I'm an old man and I'm old school. Dependability reliability shot placement. That is what you need to focus on

    A 66 will never jam stove pipe miss fire and you can't accidentally drop the mag in a hairy stressful situation.
    The 357 has way more power and with proper shot placement is more of a 1 shot 1 kill round and forces you to make shots count so really 6 is as good as 12 because you tend to spray your rounds too fast down rang.

      While it won't break the wire right away the act of the metal moving is what wears it down.

    There is one good reason for the small revolver, you can shoot thru your clothes. One round is all you get with an auto, and not without damage to your shooting hand. With a revolver you can get off as many shots as you will likely need. This ability is rarely mentioned in comparisons, but is fundamental to self defense.

    Good video! Glad to see the wheel gun getting some love. One advantage of the 3" model 66 is the compactness of the 2.5" snubby version, with the full length guide rod of the 4+ inch versions, for complete ejection of spent cases. I also find that the balance is just about perfect for a round butt revolver whereas I prefer the square butt on my 4" K frames. And, as you alluded to, there's just something magical about the feel of the K frame over the other S&W frame sizes. I have one of the hard to find older, pre-lock, pre-MIM, 3" Model 66 revolvers. While I don't carry it, it is one of my most prized guns and one I'd never sell.

      It is a valid way of thinking. A j frame is small enough that you need an excuse to not carry it and 38 special is an effective round for defense. Personally I prefer a 357 Magnum and carry full power loads in my sp101, but I just love recoil when I go to the range so that may be a factor.

      *Carry as big, and as much as you can.*
      consider 8 shot 357 mag revolver or a 5.7 x 28 20/30 round pistol
      these are powerful effective small cartridges, that you can carry more of.
      I don't own a FN FiveseveN, because I live in CA with a 10 rd mag limit. (or I would)
      [imagine having 60/90 rounds of 5.7 in a gun fight.] they come with 3 mags
      I carry full size Glock 10mm or a PPQ M1 .40 [ 2 mags each-20 rd total ]

      Works for me (S&W 642). And I don't dread carrying it or trying to make it disappear into light summer clothing. Its a G U N and its super-comfortable to carry, so I feel good about carrying it.
      Yes, I have a Shield and actually love to shoot it, but it still less desirable to carry due to the square slide and less rounded grips, all of which are harder to conceal and will dig into your side or back.

    in the bad old days, i carried a smith 66 while on the job. i never felt under-gunned. ever. to most of the younger crowd, or people who have never carried a wheel gun, they seem complicated or cumbersome to reload, etc, etc, blah-blah. most have probably never shot a revolver, or more sadly never wanted to shoot one. i miss my old rotary bullet launcher. i learned to run the gun early on in my career, and would go back to the old warhorse any time. so i'm old school...so?

    most people assume every single confrontation is best solved by having:
    1. more rounds
    2. faster return shots
    I don't quite agree as much. With weapons like the LCP and such I feel that they barely can hit anything more than throwing distance. Which means the point of having a handgun kind of weak. The subcompacts usually wind up being much better in this regard.
    I like my Smith and Wesson Model 60. It gives me good accuracy at 20 yards while with the LCP most people can't even reliably hit at 15.
    So the point i'm trying to make is...
    Basic rule of shooting:
    Make sure whatever you're shooting is the only thing you're shooting.
    I want to minimize chances of injuring anyone else or other peoples property.
    I'd sacrifice speed and capacity to have a gun that I'm sure I can reliably hit with. Even with a double action with a hammer I've practiced the draw a thousand times. I can do it every time without a snag and cocking the gun on the first shot.

    • @traumajock
      @traumajock 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been to a whole bunch of handgun shootings in 32 years. None were more than 5 yards. None. You'll be lucky to get your gun out and pointed at the bad guy with one hand, let alone a proper grip. For that, you're will have had to have exceptional situational awareness (not diddly-boppin' out of the restaurant or store with your face in your phone going back to the car) Bad guys look for people not paying attention. So as much fun as I find revolvers, a semi-auto with a higher capacity makes more sense. When I carry my Security Six, I always have a small semi-auto (a Taurus TCP) as backup on the other hip.

    OK, well I did not hear the two words I expected to hear when comparing a revolver to a semiautomatic. The two words are "JAM" and "MISFIRE". Yes, Jams and misfires are a part of shooting a semiautomatic and you did not discuss those two very important things. You will never have to clear a jam with a revolver and if you do have a misfire, simply pull trigger again. Revolvers are more reliable than semiautomatics period.

    • @tomcrooks2178
      @tomcrooks2178 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes but I and many others would argue that the reliability defference is negligible, and as long as you clean the gun and don't shoot crappy ammo semi-autos will rarely jam, and when they do simply racking the slide fixes it 9 times out of 10.

      Revolvers can have timing problems if they are old and worn or if they are poorly maintained. I've seen people at the range having problems with revolvers and th hey take the gun to the on site Smith and discover that the guns are so dirty they can't eject the spent casings to examine the gun. The one indisputable truth I've learned from the shooting sports is this, some people are just stupid and shouldn't be fooling around with guns.

    • @AlamarianJ
      @AlamarianJ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I used to shoot IDPA with a S&W 10-9 and a 28-2. I've had cases get underneath the extractor star of both guns. I've had a primer back out and completely lock the cylinder up on the 10-9. The cylinder stop on the 28-2 got stuck in the middle of a match. The hand on the 28-2 bound up. Unburned powder got under the extractor star of the 10-9 and kept it from closing. So, I had 6 failures with those two revolvers. I don't know how many failures I had with my Springfield XD. It was enough I stopped counting.
      The difference is that I always got the XD back into action with a quick tap-rack. Three of the revolver jams were fixed but if the targets had been shooting back, I'd have been better off throwing the gun at them and running. Two of them turned my guns into paperweights until I got the tools out (backed out primer, frozen hand). I could have kept shooting with the frozen cylinder stop, with the risk of turning the revolver into a hand grenade. All the weapons were well maintained. That's not to speak of the malfunctions I witnessed others experience but didn't have myself, like backed out ejector rods and triggers that didn't return and cylinder latches that froze and so on. (Which is not to say that I've never locked up a semiauto so badly it wouldn't work. I had a Ruger P89 that liked to double feed and it couldn't be fixed without generous swearing and beating. Ended up giving it away.)
      If a man made it, it can fail. Be prepared, whatever you use.

    • @josephpaige3614
      @josephpaige3614 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Justin Hogan .....good points. Never thought of some of these revolver malfunctions as I'm just a casual shooter. It might be fair to say that for inexperienced shooters the revolver is less prone to USER error in that you can't forget to chamber a round, release the safety, or accidentally drop the magazine. ( If you forget to load your revolver, you should carry a knife instead or just stay home ).

    I love the model 66, Hell I love revolvers. I hear a lot of people talk about round count and reloads but truth is most people will never even fire one shot in anger. Some may never present their firearm in a defense situation. For me 6 shots and a speed strip or loader is good. Everyone should carry what they want. For me a J or K frame suits me just fine. Good video. I’ve watched it a few times. Lucky Gunner has some of the best produced videos.

    I’m very happy with my Ruger Bisley Flattop Blackhawk in .44 Special w/ 5-1/2” barrel. It seems to do everything I need a handgun to accomplish. However you make some good points in favor of your Smith and Wesson.

    This video made me subscribe. The safety disconnection instructions were priceless. 😉 I’m a S&W 19 and 29 owner. My carry revolver choice however is the Charter Arms On-Duty Bulldog in 44spl. It has a shrouded hammer so I have the option if I need it. I don’t carry the revolver as much because it’s very hard to beat a Glock 19, and over 20 years of experience with the Glock 19. Great job on the video. Stay safe & Stay Ready.

    To me, a plastic frame semi-auto is like a rice burning crotch rocket, while an all metal wheel gun is like a big, heavy, elegant Harley cruiser.

    Thanks for a great and balanced video with a thorough look at both choices. However, with a .357 revolver, you don't need to do double-taps or 'Mozambiques' to stop your aggressors, so with 5 attackers you use up 15 of your rounds on 5 guys (assuming you have enough time to fire 15 rounds!) and have 2 left over - or fire 5 rounds on 5 targets and have one left over, if needed. Plus, ditch the speedloader and use moonclips for much faster reload and you can carry 2 reloads in the same space. And I also have a pistol for everyday carry - a Ruger American with ambi controls in case one hand/arm is otherwise occupied.

      I've got 3. 3 inch, and 2 6". The 3 and the 6 are both new within 10 years. The other 6" is my favorite, it's a special edition something or another. It's the older version before the lock and it's 6 shot and has an elevation adjustable front sight

    Sir, respectfully, may I ask for a list of the modifications you made to this weapon, and the name of the informational-DVD that helped you with the "internals" of this weapon.
    I do think your video was very helpful to me, however, as best as I tried, I could either hear what you were saying or watch what you were doing. Needless to say, I wound up "loosing" on both accounts.
    Thank you Sir, for your hard work in producing this video.

    Love your sensayuma and delivery of good solid info. Thanks, man.
    I only "carry" at home, so I'll probably stick with my Ruger SP-101, loaded with .38 spl +P.
    I use an old Miami Machining reloader. It's easier to use than the "twisty" Safariland types. Everything's held in by a spring, and you just push a plunger to load. They were available on eBay, but I'm not sure if they still are.

    In the olden days, my primary gun was a 2 1/2" 66 with my secondary a 3" 60. Then Sigs and Berettas then Glocks due to department policy. Age has caught up to me and my Sig 220, 227, 228, 229, Beretta 92 Elite and several Glocks will go to my family or sold and I've dug my old Smiths out and added a couple J Frames. The right gun for you is the right gun. I was trained DAO, but see the SA as useful at times.

    I would have agreed with you with all my heart up until last month. That is when I got my Ruger GP100 357 Magnum. I have moved the S&W 66 from number 1 to 1b. 1a is now the GP100. So, it's not by much, I will always have a soft spot for the 66. But the GP100 is such a sweet shooter. Next week the positions may switch. lol
