What's Wrong With This Entry Level Rolex?

  • The Oyster Perpetual has been a part of the Rolex collection for a while and is the brand's entry level watch. In fact, it has been considered Rolex's finest, multipurpose timepiece. With a water-resistant case and self-winding movement, these are two of the brand's most significant inventions highlighted, but it never comes off as overdone or excessively precious. The collection of exquisitely crafted, attractively fashionable, time-only Rolex watches clearly checks all the boxes. The traditional Rolex OP is just a subtle class act, never over or underdressed. And, it's the least costly and possibly most diverse timepiece the company offers.

    Here is a related story:
The AMD 5950x CPU was impossible to get for about 11 months, unless you bought it on the aftermarket for several hundred dollars above list price from someone with computerized buying systems (sound familiar?). AMD couldn't do anything about the 5950x craze. They built as many as their factory could make without sacrificing quality (CPUs have zero tolerance for error. They have to be essentially perfect. Their precision is at the nanometer level). Now you can get the 5950x easily, at a discount, and immediately.
Like the market obsession for the 5950x processor debut, Rolex can't do anything about the current craze. Rolex is estimated to make approximately 1 million watches per year. That is an insanely-high amount of luxury watches- they are doing their job getting watches into the world. But the market has gone bat-crazy for Rolex watches, and Rolex can't simply wish more of their watches into existence. Rolex is spending a billion dollars to build another factory. But the factory will not be completed until 2029.
Here is a market truism: if you don't allow the price to float to market demand, you will get rationing. Rolex dealers (if allowed by the company) could allow prices to float to market value, and you would then be able buy a Rolex the day you walk in. But Rolex dealers have opted to cap their prices at list (honor? virtue? fairness?), which has created scarcity conditions. So we have waitlists, ideosyncratic buying conditions, and an aftermarket. Rolex has traded willingness-to-pay for willingness-to-wait. It's a peculiar tradeoff. The watch goes not to the person willing to pay the most, but to the person in the least hurry to buy.
So if you want a Rolex, you're stuck with wait times and scarcity until the craze dies down, or you go to the aftermarket. Other high-quality watches can be bought immediately and easily. But not Rolex - for now.

I went to the dealer and ordered one. They said, it would be taking a while, but exactly after 10 month, it was in my hands / on my wrist. New from the dealer and at list price.
Looks like Rolex talked to their ADs to make sure they are not selling at flippers, but at customers. And only one order per houshold at a time. So I could have ordered the next one right when I walked away then.

@@acethis We are living in a place that has just about 100 000 people. And one Rolex dealer. I went there, we talked and I ordered. My wife went to a big city (approx 2+ mio people) with international business, mainly trade, big port and at least 4 Rolex dealers. No chance to get anything. No list for her, just a nice talk. Although she was wearing a DJ 36 (or maybe because...?).
My suggestion: go to a small town and try it there. On the other side, Rolex flipping is over, at least in Europe. Due to dramatic increase of inflation and war, many people are scared, save their money and are not anymore prepared to pay for overpriced watches. Russian and Chinese markets are down, there is supply of watches here. There are a number of actual videos on TH-cam, where experts are telling, the Rolex bubble has burst. No more premium for an OP or a DJ. I'm just not clear about the tool watches (GMT II, Sub, Daytona), but for any of these, there are way much better alternatives outside the Rolex world anyway - at least watch connoisseurs are laughing if you run around in the office with a sub or a sea dweller- these watches are good for diving but not for the office... / a true sign that you don't have a clue on diving... , just want to show off... . Too obvious.

There is no brand in watch making quite like Rolex. Sure PP are desirable but everyone has heard of Rolex - only watch enthusiasts understand who PP are, and why they command such high prices.

Specs wise no, but still worth the msrp price imho due to overall look. The sub's only downside is probably what I like to call the "Fur Elise" effect..a beautiful musical piece, but perhaps way overplayed everywhere (hotel lobbies, doorbells, toys, and every beethoven-wannabe trying to play it on any open piano in public). The sub is somewhat like that.

The hands do not pop. The hour indexs are weird with emphasis on 3, 6, 9. No display case back. Only 100m water resistance, 100m is good enough, but not good enough on a Rolex.
