If you do a half double crochet to join, you don't have to chain. That's what I do. I also start each row with a stacked single crochet. It looks nicer than a chain 3
I do my joining in the corner too, depending on how many chains i have in the corner depends on the joining stitch i use (SC or HDC). Sometimes i will slipstich but i HATE starting/turning chains so I will usually do a standing DC or stacked singles. I find it hides the starting stitch better than an ugly chain 🙂
I have tried those techniques before and I did like them, but they just didn’t stick for some reason! Will have to have another go because they definitely look nicer than the chain! Thankyou 🥰
Funny, because in Grade 8 when we were forced to learn how to crochet granny squares for slave labour, they taught us the correct way from the very beginning. This is literally what I remember us teaching each other when we forgot how to crochet at the end of the year for the blanket marathon, LOL.
That is so funny, i have always been doing my granny squares like this, starting in a corner. I have been crocheting now for more than 55 years😊 a very inspirational channel😊

It also helps to chain 2 loosly for DC (US term) instead of 3. I also start each row of granny squares in corners.
I love this!

Thankyou! I don't think it's new technique, I'm sure I learned it years ago in a book or pattern maybe. I hope I'm still crocheting in 55 years❤️
Can you do this technique when turning after every round?
Yes i do this a lot and it works just the same 😁
You have so many wonderful tips and are an excellent instructor. Really glad I found your channel.
Thanks so much!
This is really clever.
