I know a school teacher who did visit several Iron Curtain countries. It was part of the curriculum.
He visited Poland 🇵🇱, Romania, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia 🇨🇿 , and Bulgaria 🇧🇬. He went unaccompanied, and he did utilize the locals for going on out of town excursions..
