The weird thing about the caste system is that Western educated Indians still buy into it- I went to medical school at Dartmouth and one of my fellow classmates was from the Brahmin caste (and she was born and raised in the US) and she looked down on another female classmate who was a Muslim Indian (an "untouchable"). Legit took place in New Hampshire in 2006 with all American or Canadian people of Indian descent. If they buy into it, what hope is there for these devadasi?
Oh yes absolutely they do. Hindus are the only people and religion on this planet who officially still practice Untouchability. Temple prostitution is part of their Hindu religion as well where the Hindu scriptures prescribe young girls to prostitute themselves in the temples to satisfy the sexual desires of Brahmin men.

The documentary overall was quite informative but the narrative in the beginning is a bit off. It was during the colonial era that the Devdasi were compared to prostitutes by the British which was a political move to show the "savageness" of Indian culture. This was despite the fact that it was the British officials who maintained most of the brothels in India. They were forced to register themselves as prostitutes because that is what the British Government classified them to be. You can read about it more on wikipedia....

Monika Ghosh It’s true, and the legend really isn’t all that convoluted. Parashuram’s dad asked him to behead his mother, Renuka, after she was unable to miraculously make a water pot out of sand (something she could do because of her religious devotion and chastity). He told his father that he would do so if his father would grant him a boon. His father agreed and he complied. After he had beheaded his mother, his father asked him what he’d like. He said that he wanted for his mother’s life to be restored. His father agreed, but on the condition that Renuka be given the body of a dead Dalit woman, and the Dalit woman’s head would be put onto Renuka’s body, making her am outcaste. They found a Dalit woman’s body in a charnel ground: The Renuka-headed-Dalit-body became Yellamma and the Dalit-headed-Renuka-body became Mariamman, the goddess of smallpox. Like... it’s a weird story... but it’s not much weirder than, say, the Catholic story where Saint Nicholas resurrects three little boys who were pickled by a cannibalistic butcher.

I hate how Indians never want to admit anything wrong with their country. It's why we have stopped developing.
@@onlyhuman5544 well u should really check facts. Becoz that’s just how it is. Initially devdasi women were free and liberated. They were women rich in arts like dancing and music and many upper caste women also took pride in being chosen as devdasies, in fact these women were never questioned about their sexual relationships with men too. But when the British came in, they could not fathom a society different then theirs and as this person stated devdasi were forced to register themselves as prostitutes.

The unlimited Father is also playing His part of being personally in front of you in this unlimited drama. You sweet children of the sweet Father are personally able to see the s weetest Father. Souls see one another with the organs of the body. So, you are the sweet children. The Father knows that He has come to make you children very sweet. This Lakshmi and Narayan are most sweet. Their kingdom is also sweet. In fact, even their subjects are sweet. When you go to the temples you find them (idols) to be so sweet. You feel: As soon as the temple opens, we will have a glimpse of the sweet deities. Those who have a glimpse of them understand that they were the masters of sweet heaven. So many people go to a Shiva Temple because He is the sweetest of all. People praise that sweetest Shiv Baba a great deal. You children too have to become most sweet. The “most sweetest ” Father is personally sitting in front of you children.
they are still sex workers though with no food... even if you say all that. @@bkanand3388
Ginger, you're gorgeous

this journalist has no professionalism....what she has documented with regards to girls being forced into prostitution is a despicable practice. ...
but her message is lost by her condescending remarks and tone.
bubblegum culture
What part
I thought her remarks about Hinduism were a little unnecessarily snarky and dismissive. A lot of Hindus believe in Yellamma/Renuka and don’t support this system of ritualized child abuse, and the Goddess was initially a figure that represented access to education and autonomy that was unknown in India outside of that religious sect. Of course, it’s been horribly perverted now, but that’s more due to the suppression of Indian cultures by the West than it is to Hinduism in and of itself.
I noticed she also kept laughing quite a lot during this video.
Top class documentary! Sad & very mind-blowing.
Education saves lives.... Educate your daughters people..
JustDance Pinky33 you have to educate the men that women are equal then there will be freedom and proper education
thanks for that outcry of yours, you're such a good person, I'm sure they're going to hear it... are you an activist? You sure are doing a good serivce to society
JustDance Pinky33 educating the daughters isn't going to help much unless you educate the sons, also, about this particular situation. It's all of society that builds a culture like this.
carole wilson Men and women arent the same they cant never be fully equal

"Devadasi " more like Devastating!
LEGIT_ELITE ...their kids' genitals.
Regardless of what made it become what ever it is, it in its current form, as depicted in the Doc it is in every sense of the word DEVASTATING.Empowerment through sex is entirely different from using it as a means of feeding ones self. Also sending little prepubescent girls to this kind of work just to support a family is again in EVERY sense of the word DEVASTATING.
Also more importantly my comment was more of a use of a poor pun. However it does echo my feelings on the subject
kaminoneh yeah sure, tell us more about how enlightened you shitbags are for selling 10 year old girls into life-long sex-slavery, and let the fathers/brothers feast on this bloodmoney, and still treat the girls like shit.
this is some disgusting subhuman shit here.

This world is a cruel place. I pray these girls don’t have to do this forever. This really weighs heavy on my heart to know that these children are cast in to this kind of system simply so they can eat😔😔😔
Their religions seem like systematic poverty...where different classes are dependent on different Gods that undermine/limits their lives.....or maybe i just don't understand them
@@mbusomabena9751 no you're right. I'm from India. The caste system pervades everything even class. Even in professional settings and urban areas, there is always caste discrimination.
Yeah so sad ..... Seeing their stories 😭
Praying does nothing, the people you watched in the video do everyday.only right education can save them, here in India public schools in most places are for namesake and in ruins even a lower middle class hesitates to leave their kids there and try to work hard to get them joined in a private one. Here education is a business , knowing that public run schools are worse private school/uni owners profit incredibly, I will bet there are 10k+ private schools on the whole mainland.

yes!
+Keshia K We have freedom of speech.
+Cathy Danther freedom of speech has nothing to do with it. Not a thing.
Keshia K How?
+Keshia K I agree freedom of speech is not a licences to spread about the misinterpretation of certain topics which in this case is what is happening here. This journalist needs to change the title from prostitutes of God to prostitutes of the goddess... .. (with the name of that idol they worship)
This was very enlightening

i'm half indian living in the states, though i'm very connected to my indian side. i even speak a bit of marathi and have visited india many times. all of my experiences there have been wonderful, and i adore this country. but after seeing this, i am ashamed of how little i know about india's problems. it's a beautiful country, rich with culture and the most hospitable people - though it certainly has an unsightly underbelly.
I love all the vice docs, but this female reporter is horrendous, and rude
Howard Hogenbirk i think she is english
Arvind Mishra what dose that mean her ethnicity dose not dictate for her rudeness
communal hatred yet again.
I was dumbstruck, when she said,"they are poor. They eat on banana leaves". And indian are 2nd largest community who can write and speak in english yet she couldn't find a interpreter and made fun of that guy. That's not the methods of making a documentary i guess.
Karnok Sutar so true ! It feels as if they intentionally did everything just to mock the place and it’s people
this is just one example how broken our world is...
Most ignorant reporter, hard to believe that this person was given a voice to speak for such a sensitive matter. I am appalled
Sayantani Chakravorty How is she ignorant? I didn't see her behave insensitively or insultingly at any point in the documentary. On the contrary she was quite unbiased and only really asked questions for most of the video.
Sayantani Chakravorty me too!! the first thing that baffled me was how she used 'shitting' instead of another better word....lol, shez English isn't she, she should use more decent vocab
Sayantani Chakravorty tell us, please HOW EXACTLY she was mistaken and what she omitted, so we can be wiser next time.
Sayantani Chakravorty What? Stop hating on the reporter, she is just doing her job. -.-
animatic girl She literally laughed because that old woman was the first to bring a radio to her village. The whole time she is there she keeps making casually ethnocentric comments.
