  • Hi there,
as I am not riding at the moment, I decided to try this potential fix for the sticky speedo issue I am having with my Royal Enfield Classic 350.
This fix was originally developed by ‪@ridewithwarro‬ and here is a link to his original video.

I wish I'd seen this before I had my speedo replaced and the mileage reset to zero, losing 3000 miles. I've recently seen another video regarding Classic 350s with minor fueling issues at 40-50mph in top gear. Apparently, caused by too much grease around the relays. At least all these niggles seem to be easily fixed. Get well soon.

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Paul,
slowly feeling better, just suffering with fatigue now, which seems to be fairly normal and lasts for a week or two if you're lucky !
Trying to take things slowly for now and hoping that will help me to get back to normal asap.
Yes, I can imagine it's annoying having your mileage zeroed like that. Typically, the day after making this video, the dealer called to say that my replacement speedo had finally arrived ! Like you, I'm not keen on losing my original mileage, so will not be fitting it unless mine starts playing up again. I left it out in the sun yesterday, trying to provoke it into misbehaving and IT DIDN'T, so maybe these connectors are the problem and just need a proper clean and lube ?
I'd heard of the relay issues caused by the shipping grease and fully expected this speedo connector to be covered in the stuff, to be honest, but it wasn't ! It must be the only electrical connection on the whole bike without any grease on it 😂🤔
If my speedo plays up again I will of course let you all know that this isn't a permanent fix and then like you, I'll probably get the new one fitted , spray it and just hope for the best !
      Cheers Paul,

@@economicalrides Hi ER, I thought I’d give you an update. My speedometer worked like a charm but 2 days later my instrument cluster, indicator lights and taillight failed. Sure enough the 10 amp fuse blew. I went in and gave it another cleaning with contact cleaner and let it dry but that fuse keeps blowing. I didn’t see any signs of a short and it might have nothing to do with the initial speedometer problem. Taking it to the RE dealer today and thankfully they are very close. On a happier note. So glad I have my Meteor as a second bike😎

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Busywave Thanks for the update and sorry to hear about that Busywave. Perhaps you do indeed have a more major problem inside the speedo connector than most and now it has decided to start frying fuses rather than to continue working. Hopefully your dealer will get it sorted quickly for you.
If they have to change the speedo, nag them that you don't want your mileage zeroed and hopefully they will ask RE how to restore your original mileage to the new speedo. I am CONVINCED that it is possible but it's simply that the dealers do not know this and can't be bothered to find out how to do it. I think a speedo with less than 50km or 10km or whatever on it CAN BE PROGRAMMED using their plug in thingy ( technical term ). Once the speedo has more than a few miles on it, of course that option becomes unavailable to prevent odometer tampering. But I am CONVINCED that a new speedo can be programmed to start counting from the original mileage in the software of their programming, diagnostic tool ! So before you just accept that you will lose your original mileage, really badger the dealer that you don't want that ( I'm assuming that you don't - if you DO, then just ignore me :P ) and insist that they try to find out if your original mileage can be restored to a new speedo. I am sure that it can be, but only up until the speedo has a few km on it, after that they get locked out.
Anyway, good luck and as you say, you have a lovely second bike to enjoy whenever the weather is compatible, so at least your fun doesn't need to stop, whilst they are sorting out your Classic for you.
Take care, good luck and thanks for the update Busywave 👍🏻

Hi there and thanks for leaving a comment to let me know. I'm glad this video helped you.
Yes, before doing any major surgery on modern cars and bikes demonstrating "gremlins" I would always look at the biggest connector nearest to the affected area ! These microelectronics are extremely sensitive to changes in current, so a bit of dirt or some moisture turned into mild corrosion can create all sorts of weird symptoms. Taking apart, cleaning and drying the connector and firmly putting it back together again quite often helps, either temporarily or as in my case here, permanently ( never needed to do it again ! ).
I'd certainly always do that before giving up and letting the dealer replace all sorts of parts unnecessarily, only for the problem to come back again later because they never bothered to check and clean the connector.
In general RE put the connector for the dash in the headlight, so it's always a good place to start looking for trouble and is generally very easily accessible.
      Thanks again and take care,
      ER.

      Hi LE,
yes, WD-40 and a hammer. It's all we need !
Like SkysaxonDragonslayer said, this is taking RE's tradition too far. It's like they're still using Lucas for their electronics and the unions have built them to go out on strike occasionally 😂
Hopefully the fix is permanent. The next day, of course, my new speedo arrived (!!!!!!) but I'm not going to get it fitted just yet. I want to see how my original holds up now that I've "fixed" it 😜
Take care LE, love from the two of us,

Excellent. My ‘22 does this occasionally, only 450 miles, just bought it last month-I will definitely do this, I think it’s probably the same issue.
    Thanks for the video:)

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Silas,
there is another issue to check for with these speedos. On some units the gauge with the speed markings can start to lift off the faceplate.
When this happens, the needle scratches across that part of the faceplate, which you should be able to hear. Eventually, when the gauge has lifted up far enough, it stops the needle from moving freely during the calibration sweep, causing the same effect..
So have a listen when the speedo does its calibration sweep to make sure that the needle is not being dragged across a lifting speed gauge.
But the most common cause seems to be condensation causing slight corrosion in the connector. The speedo seems to be very sensitive to changes in conductivity across the connector pins. So the connector needs to be really clean and dry for it to work properly.
The connector is quite tight to take apart, I almost gave up. But persevere and wiggle and pull and it should come apart eventually, once you've lifted the red tab.
Good luck. This fix was still working for me six months later, so seems to last a fair while if done right. A better idea than getting a replacement speedo and losing your original mileage, anyway !
Cheers Silas, glad to have been of service !

      Hi Mike,
glad to hear that it worked for you too !
My speedo was still working fine six months later, when I traded the Classic 350 in.
The fix may or may not be permanent, but it certainly seems to last for quite a while and is easily repeated if necessary. I think condensation can build on the connector pins and the speedo unit itself seems to be very sensitive to minute changes in conductivity. If the pins are not 100% clean and dry, weird stuff seems to happen !
Good luck with yours and thanks for letting me know that it worked for you too. Quite a few people seem to have had a similar experience so far !
      Cheers Mike,
      Garry

Thanks for the info. Fixed mine right up. If that corrects the problem, it show the problem is not in the speedo but the connector.

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi Chuck, glad it worked for you too.
This fix lasted for six months and then I sold the bike. The speedo was still working correctly when I sold it, so the fix certainly lasts a fair while and of course, can be repeated if necessary.
In our cases, I agree that the connector is the problem. I think that the speedo is very sensitive to variations in resistance across the connector. I think that sometimes, maybe when you ride in hot humid weather and then the bike cools down, condensation can form inside the connector. That affects the conductivity across the pins and that results in weird speedo behaviour.
If the pins in the connector are clean and dry, everything seems to go back to working normally.
Other people have had a different issue, whereby the faceplate of the speedo starts lifting up. You can then hear the needle scratching across it and eventually the faceplate rises up enough to physically stop the needle from making the full calibration sweep.
So RE certainly had at least two different issues to deal with, with these speedos, possibly there are more.
The part number of the speedos they are issuing these days is slightly different, so it appears that they have a new revision of this speedo. Who knows which, if any, problems it addresses ? Time will tell.
But certainly fixing the speedo yourself is the better option because losing your original mileage count would be extremely annoying and supposedly when the dealer swaps out the speedo, he has no option to restore the original mileage ( which I find hard to believe but that's what they seem to be saying to their customers ).
I hope your current fix lasts as well as it did for me Chuck.
      Cheers Chuck,
      Garry

This is exactly the problem. I'll try a clean if it happens again.
However, I noticed on that video that the speed was indicating about 28mph when we first see the speedometer and it went past the maximum when turned to the On position. After the ignition was turned on/off, it went down to approximately 20mph.
That's also what I experienced. As I repeated the on/off procedure, the speedometer reduced by a few mph each time until it correctly calibrated at 0/max.

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Pete,
yes, that worked for me the first time too.
That lasted for about a month.
The next time it got stuck, no amount of switching on and off fixed it. It kept returning to 25-35 kph but never lower. At that point the dealer had ordered me a replacement speedo but because I didn't want to lose my odometer reading, I decided to give this a go.
As you can see here, it worked immediately.
And the problem hasn't reoccurred in the eight months since either ! I told the dealer to send the replacement speedo back 😇
Cheers Pete, I thoroughly recommend trying this, should the problem reoccur. It can also be repeated every six months if needs be ( WD-40 loses its effect over time ) and is pretty easy to do, once you get the hang of opening the connector, which can be tricky the first time you try it.
Cheers Pete and good luck with your own speedo !

      Hi Dern,
sorry to hear that, what a joke !
Well, all I can say is that, as you can see here, the speedo went from not working to working, just by doing what I did. There was no clever editing involved because I'm not that clever. Doing this actually fixed it for me on the spot, as can be seen in this video. At the time, I had no idea how permanent this "fix" was going to be but can now report that in the more than five months which have passed since I made this video, the problem has not reappeared ! So it is at least "pretty permanent" and if it ever starts playing up again, I will just repeat the process and would expect it to be ok again for another fair while.
If your dealer is struggling to get to the bottom of the issue, feel free to send them the link to this video.
I can only report on what I've experienced and in my case, doing this definitely solved the issue ( so far ! ).

Since my new one's been fitted, a 5 digit number briefly appears when I turn on the key, before the trip or clock info comes on, I don't think this happened with the original one, though perhaps I just didn't notice it. Interesting that Paul, commenting below , just like mine , didn't have the original odo reading reset . Enjoy that lovely Spanish sunshine, best wishes...Pete

yes, the cold-like symptoms are more or less gone but the fatigue and sweats remain. I need to try to avoid overdoing things for another couple of weeks I reckon. But I can probably ride at a leisurely pace again now, at least.
I think that’s the ECU software version which pops up on the display initially. Mine has always done it, it’s normal. The Meteor too. You must have just not noticed it before ? 🤷‍♂️
If this fix turns out to be permanent ( or even if it has to be repeated annually or whenever ) it would suggest that RE is currently wasting a lot of money swapping speedos. Maybe they should watch this video and do a bit more analysis of the problem 😉
The fact that a lot of people are on their third or fourth new speedo could support the theory that the connectors are the problem 🤔
We shall see but I’m surprisingly confident that this will be an acceptable occasional fix. My new speedo has just arrived ( typical ! ) but now I’m determined to give my original one a bit longer to prove itself !

Hi ER. Glad you are finding some good stuff on Worro's channel. He has some excellent content.
My personal debate on which (of now 3) Enfields to get, is over.
I visited a small dealer in Western Germany yesterday and got to sit on every model available. Only the Meteor had the low seat height I was looking for, so I took one for a test ride. I fell in love with it in 200m.
    So bought a yellow Fireball.
Expect to see some other bods mods soon.

      Awesome Tim !
I think you chose the right bike ! The Meteor is adorable, I understand how it won you over and just so easy to live with. Will your one still have the Tripper pod as standard ?
These days the Tripper is finally worth having but RE had supply issues and were going to stop fitting it as standard on Meteors and Himalayans. I’d recommend the Tripper now, even though I wouldn’t have done so previously !
The yellow Fireball is definitely the sexiest one off the peg, excellent choice ! Mine always attracts a lot of attention 🤗

Mine just failed at 3,300 miles. Removed speedometer as I found the connector was too tight to separate by hand. Pulled red tab, then used flat blade screwdriver to disconnect. Used contact cleaner on both the connector and mating socket. I actually added an electrical contact oxidation prevention grease to the speedometer contact pins. Reconnected, reassembled. No issues. Will test long term. Electrical contact grease used is called NO-OX-ID “A Special” made by Sanchem Inc. The conductive formulation was specifically developed to prevent contact rust and corrosion. Intended for microelectronics and others. Appreciate reading all the feedback. Would rather service myself and see if I can fix rather than deal with warranty repair and new gauge at zero miles.

Well done Daniel, glad it worked for you too !
The fix lasted for six months and then I sold the bike with the speedo still working perfectly. It's possible that I may have had to repeat it eventually but I'll never know now.
But I think your grease is probably a good idea.
I think the speedo is very sensitive to variations in current across the connector pins. In hot weather and as the bike cools down again, I think that it's likely that condensation can form within the connector, causing mild corrosion on the pins. That seems to be enough to make the speedo freak out. I think keeping the connector pins clean and dry is critical with these speedos, so your special grease should help with that.
Good luck with yours Daniel 👍🏻

Update: went for a long ride today and the issue came back. Same 20mph offset, but I realized something important. It found this issue only occurs when I select the menu to check miles or time while the bike is running. It loses its mind after this. If I leave the menu alone… no issues. There seems to be a CPU logic issue.

Yes this is interesting. I found the same. When I use the trip odometer specifically, and e.g. reset it with the engine running, the Speedo loses track while riding soon thereafter. After resetting (6 ignition cycles) with only the total miles showing on the LCD… the error does not occur. Must be a trip odometer and menu access related software bug.

Good morning. Mine started doing this at 1400km. I couldn't get the plug out to clean it. It seems to have some kind of glue. But just shaking the plug and pushing it to the bottom the speedometer returned to normal, which deprives that it is really bad contact in the plug. Probably motivated by the glue they put there in the assembly.

I subsequently sold the Classic but this repair held until I sold the bike, so ten months or so. The problem didn't reoccur in that time. It was certainly less faff than doing a three hour round trip to the dealer to get a replacement speedo AND lose the odometer mileage I had done with the bike.

I definitely think there is an issue with the speedo connector rather than the speedo itself. In this video a speedo which was clearly defective suddenly works again after being disconnected, having the contacts cleaned and being reconnected. I think RE are replacing speedos at great cost which may not even be necessary. This is backed up by people saying that they are already on their third or fourth speedo. Maybe the connectors are just dirty or slightly corroded when fitted and they just need a proper clean out to work reliably. Who knows ? It's certainly interesting and credit to Warro for trying this out !

The speedo thing is a strange one. I'm glad I didn't bother replacing mine now. After sticking a few times in some 20°+ weather, but then after our, distant memory, heatwave at 32+°, it hasn't stuck since! I was always slightly doubtful about the heat issue, thinking, if the plastic had warped, it could have stuck at any speed, but it always seemed to be exactly at a 10mph interval. Then on start up would sweep up to 10mph past 100 or whatever it is and back, still very smoothly, so thought maybe it was an electronic thing instead. It will be interesting to see if cleaning the contacts sorts it permanently for you. Perhaps mine had an intermittent dodgy connection and it vibrated itself into the right place, who knows, but it's not let me down for months 😁
Anyhoo, enjoy your ride when your legs will allow. Take care out there 😊

Yes, mine fixed itself the first couple of times, it was sufficient just to leave it in the garage overnight to cool down and the next time I went out, it would calibrate correctly.
This time I parked it showing 20 at a standstill before I left for Germany and fully expected it to calibrate to zero nearly four weeks later, the next time I tried it. I was very surprised that it remained stuck at 20 after all that time, it was the first time it had ever done that ! Fortunately in the meantime I had seem Warro's video and wanted to make people aware of it via my channel, so decided to do the thing to my bike, really not really expecting it to work !
If it keeps on working I would recommend cleaning and lubing that connector as preventative maintenance, so even for the folks who have yet to have the problem. Maybe these connectors are not perfectly clean or corrosion-free from the factory or something.
But let's wait and see if the fix appears to be permanent first. If not, at least my replacement speedo has finally arrived at my dealer's shop.

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hi ! Glad it worked for you too 👍
I have a theory that when it is hot enough and the air is humid enough, condensation can possibly build up in the connector. Once it dries out, there is mild oxidation which affects the conductivity through the connector. The speedo itself seems to be very sensitive to changes in conductivity within the connector. Cleaning the contacts solves the problem and WD40 prevents the condensation from building up again. WD40 will lose its effect eventually, so you might have to repeat the process at some point. But it is easily done and preferable to getting a replacement speedo and losing your total mileage.
I sold my Classic six months after doing this and the speedo was still working fine when I sold it. So the “fix” certainly seems to last quite a long time 👍
I did tell my dealer to do this before replacing speedos on other customers’ bikes but from what I hear they are still replacing speedos whenever it happens, for some customers multiple times ! 🤷‍♂️

I think the extreme heat causes some kind of change in the speedo connector, maybe oxidisation on the contacts due to humidity in the air or something. If cleaning the connector solves the problem for a while, I will continue to clean the connector because my dealer says that if they change the speedo, they cannot restore the original odometer reading. possibly, but I also believe that these connectors can be dodgy. Curious, my current view is that that the engineering is sound but production to meet demand mean that there are some short cuts. I’ve bought a Classic and an Interceptor this year. Both have had a couple of loose spokes in both wheels. Generally finish is good but regular cleaning and protective coatings etc….mind you….is that any different to other bikes?

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  ปีที่แล้ว

I definitely think that the production side has been under a lot of pressure for the past couple of years at least. RE are selling A LOT of bikes and have also had a pretty hectic release schedule for new models. It wouldn't surprise me to see the odd error creeping in although I think most of the issues stem from suppliers not being able to maintain the quality which RE agreed to buy in. I think RE have chopped and changed suppliers for various components too, in an attempt just to get the parts needed by the production side, and of course you are introducing massive variables if you start doing that. It is always a risk to deviate from your proven suppliers.
Fortunately so far, the problems have been quite minor and probably no worse than many other brands. Parts supply is a nightmare globally at the moment and RE and other manufacturers may have been forced to buy in the odd part which isn't quite up to spec, just to get the bikes out of the door. What they can't start doing is delivering bikes with poorly assembled engines and gearboxes. That's the sort of thing to ruin a reputation. On that side of things we don't seem to be hearing of any issues, which is good, obviously.
It's a tough time for manufacturers at the moment. Considering their output I'd say that RE are doing pretty well in keeping on top of things, overall.
Cheers Pete ( I'll check the spokes on my Classic ! )

It looks as though it was just a matter of disconnecting and reconnecting. Also, the needle did go from above 20 to 20 or a little below after the first on and off. If turning the ignition on and off a few times may have done it maybe. Worth the electrical chemical. Doesnt hurt.

    • @economicalrides

      Hi,
turning it off and on 10 times fixed it THE FIRST TIME it happened. This was the second time and it just would not return to zero. Cleaning the connector is the thing that helps, since I did this, no reoccurrence in eight months.
Some people have had a new speedo fitted multiple times and the problem returns very quickly. This would suggest that it is not the speedos themselves that are the problem, a new speedo on the same old connector, quickly starts playing up again. I really believe that the connector needs to be perfectly clean and have perfect contact for these speedos to work correctly.
It's very easy to clean both sides of the connector with contact cleaner and I would recommend that to anybody having similar problems.

Great video. I was wondering if you added a little electrical contact grease after you sprayed the contacts with WD40? I’ve had to clean out all the factory gunk from the relays on my Interceptor and added a little grease to prevent corrosion. It must be great living in Spain. My wife and I have an apartment in Murcia and hopefully soon we will be spending a month or two at a time there and luckily there is a Royal Enfield retailer in Murcia City! Happy days👍

    • @economicalrides
      @economicalrides  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark,
thanks, glad you found this one useful 👍🏻
No, I was wary of using grease because I suspect that the factory grease may have been causing the issue. I decided that WD-40 would be nice and light and less likely to affect conductivity in the connector pins. I've no idea if that was a good idea or not, I just figured that this way it would be easier to clean the connector and spray it again, should a repeat be necessary.
This "repair" has held for over eight months so far, but I was prepared to repeat it if necessary because it is a ten minute job. Preferable to fitting a new speedo, losing your previous odometer reading and potentially having the problem again anyway.
I've just traded the Classic in for a new Himalayan but the speedo was still working fine when I handed the bike over 👍🏻
I have heard that the shipping grease RE use on electrical connections has caused issues with relays on all kinds of different models and particularly on Himalayans. So if my Himalayan starts acting up, I will definitely open and clean all connectors before losing a whole day taking the bike to the dealership. I believe that the dealers are instructed to remove the shipping grease before delivery but that memo seems to have been ignored ! I think the grease can affect conductivity as its state changes, i.e. as it gets warm on a hot day, it becomes more liquid. That then results in a different level of conductivity through the connector and depending how sensitive the following components are, these slight changes in current could cause weird side effects. It's just my theory, I'm not a scientist or micro-electronics specialist. I would always prefer to have a CLEAN connector and then just try to keep it out of the wet and preferably add some water repellent element like WD-40. Also I don't like getting mucky and grease is mucky stuff 🤗
Yes, I am familiar with Intruder Motorcycles in Murcia, I've been there a couple of times but it is a bit far for me to go there regularly. They tend to have a good selection of RE models on demo but it's a two hour drive each way for me, so a five hour round trip just to test a bike is not really terribly appealing ( particularly with Ruby waiting impatiently for my return ! ).
Whereabouts do you have your apartment if you don't mind me asking ? Mazarron way maybe ?
Cheers Mark, enjoy your Interceptor 👍🏻

Hi. Thanks for your reply. It sounds like you’ve done exactly the right thing especially as it’s still working after 8 months. Why have you sold your Classic 350? Are you doing a bit of light off roading which would be perfect on the Himalayan? We bought a place in Lo Pagan which is on the Mar Menor in the San Pedro Del Pinatar district. We’re only 50 metres from the Mar Menor with the Mediterranean just a five minute drive away. It suits us perfectly and since buying it on a bit of a whim in 2020 and visiting for the first time in 2021 we find ourselves going there more and more as I can work whilst I’m there. Murcia City is 30 to 40 mins away and Cartagena is about 45 minutes away. We are about an hour from Alicante and 30 mins from Murcia International airport which is brilliant as it’s a much smaller, quieter airport. Originally I was thinking of something faster than my Interceptor but in all honesty I’ve realised that it’s quick enough as it will comfortably do 100mph (not that I ever do🤣) and with a free flow DNA air filter, free flow headers and Zard silencers together with YSS suspension it sounds amazing and handles brilliantly. What attracts me to the Classic 350 is the thumper single cylinder engine, the military colours they do and the well documented uplift in overall quality and fit and finish. I’ll be going for the Signals Marsh Grey which strangely is actually green and my preference as it will be a nice contrast to my Interceptor and which won’t involve even more polishing of engine cases and exhausts🤪 The Interceptor’s sweet spot is 50mph to 70mph. Having the Classic 350 for bimbling around the lanes between 40mph and 50mph I think will suit me perfectly. It’s great to have found your page. Happy and safe riding👍

      @@markfletcher443 Hi Mark,
if you watch my last video it will all become clear, it's all very recent but yes, since taking both the Meteor and the Classic down a mountain trail about eight months ago I realised how much fun that would be on a bike which didn't make me feel guilty every time I did it. The Meteor and Classic both did well but were filthy afterwards and I always tried to keep them pristine. Since I can't be doing with three bikes at the moment, the Classic had to make way for the Himalayan because I wanted one bike for the roads ( now the Meteor ) and one for the trails ( the new Himalayan ). As much as I liked the Classic, as soon as I discovered the local trails, it did bug me having two road bikes and no bike for the trails. Something had to give !
I can always buy another Classic later on, if my circumstances change again. It was certainly a lovely bike.
RE's black finishes are really easy to clean, so you'll be glad you don't have too much chrome on yours. The Meteor is all blacked out and it comes up like new with zero effort. After two years and a few dusty trails, it still looks brand new. To be honest, my red/chrome Classic was pretty easy to clean too. The only downside with chrome is what the English winter might do to it. If you only ride in the dry, like me, you can hose it off and dry it and it holds up fine.
The black finish does seem to be very durable though and as I said, just rinse off and dry and it looks like new 👍🏻
Yes, Murcia is a lovely little airport. Unfortunately it's no use to me because there are no flights from there that work for me. I always have to fly from Almeria to Madrid and from Madrid you can get anywhere, obviously. Unfortunately the regional airports are really suffering and struggling to get flights, since a lot of the budget airlines went bust !

I don't know if it makes any difference, but I ALWAYS wait for the speedo to complete its start up cycle totally before pressing the starter switch. (It's obviously got some sort of computer chip in it, so a power spike or drain at the wrong moment could cause the device to have a fart attack.) ?????

      Hi Kevin,
no, I always do that too, I even wait for the fuel injection to finish priming.
In my case it started when the bike was parked in the sun. On the next start the needle just got stuck. I think that this instrument is very sensitive to changes in voltage and there is something in the connector which causes issues when it gets hot. This seems to affect the calibration sweep. It's weird but I'm sure that heat is causing the connector to deliver inconsistent voltage to the instrument itself and that manifests itself in the speedo getting confused in its calibration sweep. It may just be grease or corrosion on one pin. It certainly seems as though cleaning and lubing this connector has made a difference. I'm convinced that the issue is not with the speedos themselves but with the quality of the connection to the speedo. I would recommend this as preventative maintenance personally, it can't do any harm if you are careful and may prevent issues occurring in the future. I might even do it annually if it proves to have solved the problem !

It had ample time to cool down whilst I was in Germany but when I came back and started it for the first time, it still stuck at 20 kph. Hi there MJR,
that doesn't sound good. I am trying to remember how it was done because I haven't touched it since making this video last year. I recall that it was quite stiff to pull apart and I think it also comes apart slightly differently than you would imagine, so you might be pulling in the wrong place. I also struggled initially and nearly gave up but eventually I started pulling in the right place and it did come apart. Just freeze frame this video, where the connector is separated and see if you can work out where the join of the two parts is. I think you may be expecting it to separate in the wrong place.
If you are trying to pull it apart in the right place, it should eventually come apart with some pulling and wiggling, no need to use tools on it and if you do you'll probably break the plastic on the connector.
So just make sure that you are trying to separate the two halves IN THE RIGHT PLACE and pull and wiggle. It should come apart, just be patient.

It was a long time ago now but I think once the red tab is up, there is a raised something or other, either in the centre or one each side, which can be pressed down or in and then the two halves come apart.
If you do get a new speedo, maybe ask your dealer beforehand to find out if they can program in your previous mileage. I believe they can but only when the speedo is new. I think they should have that option when they connect their code reader / programmer thingy 👍🏻 Most dealers just say "No, you'll lose your previous odometer reading" but I think that if they actually bothered to enquire, they will discover that actually it IS possible. It certainly should be possible, but of course only when the speedo is reading zero, after that the option would have to disappear to prevent mileage tampering.

I left it at the dealership because here in Australia while you are on your L’s you cannot have the phone on the bike (means I can’t use gps Speedo on the phone).. really bummed. Wondering if it should pick the bike up and do this myself. The guys are not sure how long this whole thing will take

      @@beedee7392 Hi Bee Dee,
      honestly I WOULD !
It's quite possible that when this happens it creates an ABS error code. After all, the speedo is just a display for the signal the ABS sensor sends with the wheel speed.
In this case the ABS error is probably just "speedo error" or "speedo calibration error".
It is possible to switch the ignition off and on again multiple times to get the speedo back to zero. That's what I did the first time it happened to me and that worked for a brief while.
But for me, disconnecting, cleaning and reconnecting the speedo connector fixed the problem immediately ( as this video shows ) and the fix is still working months later, although as I mentioned, I really need to ride through a hot summer before being sure that the fix is permanent. But even if it did start playing up again, I'd still repeat this fix before bothering my dealer with it. Even if I have to repeat this process every six months, it's easy to do, takes about 15 minutes all told.
So honestly, before the dealer starts swapping out bits which don't need to be swapped out, I would definitely give this a go. 100%. Maybe even ask the dealer to do it for you. You could be saving them a lot of work !
It's a shame that a GPS speedo on a phone is not an option for you. There are probably bluetooth displays which connect to the navigation app on your phone ( which could then be in your pocket ) or I believe that a bicycle speedo is also considered legal and they are dirt cheap ! Just as a backup I mean.
If the bike is now at the dealership I would just ask them to do what I did here, tell them that you want the bike back quickly. If it doesn't turn out to be a fix, you will bring the bike back later. But if it is a fix, you've just saved them a ton of grief !
If you had the bike at home, I would tell you to just crack on and try it for yourself, definitely. But since you don't, ask the dealer if they could try it for you.
You can link to the video and tell them that since I did this just the once, I have had about four months without a reoccurrence.
      Good luck Bee Dee,
let me know how it goes !
      ER.

So before I could pick up the bike the guys have already replaced the speedo and speed sensor, the speedo of course is down to zero, so basically have a “new bike”
Anyways, seems to be working good now, I need to go for a longer ride on the weekend and see how it goes, hopefully doesn’t happen again. All replaced under warranty

@@beedee7392 Bummer. Going back to 0km is mildly annoying 🫤
Well at least they got it done very quickly, sounds like a good dealer !
I had a three month wait for my new speedo and by the time it had finally arrived, I had done my "fix" and decided that I didn't need it anymore.
Plenty of people are on their third or fourth new speedo already, so if the problem does crop up again, try the "fix" before going back to the dealer. You could save yourself some aggro 🙂
If my Classic makes it through the summer without the speedo playing up again, I'm calling the fix permanent. A bit too cold at the moment to be sure that it's not just coincidence that it's still working. We'll see.
Thanks for letting me know how you got on Bee Dee 👍🏻
Good luck with the new bike, make sure you run her in nice and gently ! 😂
      Cheers 👍🏻

    WD40 and a hammer.
If that does not work, use a larger hammer...

It sounds like you went to the same school of mechanics as I did CC 😂
Add some cable ties and some duct tape and you have a fully featured toolkit, adequate for any job !
      Cheers buddy 🍺
