7 Times Games Stole All Your Stuff

  • Many a time we've spent a game acquiring precious items and equipment, then lost it all when the game ransacked our inventory - by means of a fussy elevator, quad bike crash, island shipwreck or, more often than not, throwing us in jail. Nightmare. Subscribe for a video like this every Thursday!
What better way to test your complacent, loot-laden player than by nicking all their gear? Is presumably the thinking here.
Take the elevator in Silent Hill 2's Lakeview Hotel, which has a capacity of exactly one person. And when it says "one person", it means it.
What’s more, that person must weigh exactly however much protagonist James Sunderland weighs, apparently, and they can’t be carrying anything else, no matter how light.
That means if you want to ride this elevator, say goodbye to all your health drinks, first aid kits, guns, music boxes and, most importantly, your torch, the only thing standing between you and what lurks in the spooky darkness.
If you’ve ever played a survival horror game you’ll know that having health kits and guns and the ability to see are the only things keeping you from freaking out like a cat who’s seen a cucumber.
So fair play to Silent Hill 2 for the next half hour of Silent Hill 2, which was some of the most unpleasantly tense time we’ve ever spent in a game, made possible by this despicable act of thievery.

A few more I can think of:
When Raiden was naked in Metal Gear 2. No weapons, LITERALLY no clothes, and no ability to grab anything to defend himself because he has to use his hands to... preserve his modesty.
In FFVII when Yuffie stole your materia. Sure, it wasn't ALL your items, but it might as well have been, if your team relied on magic and summoning attacks.
AND ALSO that part in Castlevania Symphony Of The Night, when Death shows up near the beginning, steals all your items, and then you, with all your eloquence, just go "WHAT?!"

The original Half Life did just this very thing. After being teased that you've finally reached the surface - a feat you're urged to complete for pretty much the whole game up to that point - the screen suddenly goes black. It turns out you've been captured by the military types who you've had little trouble (ok, maybe some trouble) dealing with beforehand. They mutter something about wanting to get rid of your body and you awake in a rubbish/trash compacter with none of the equipment you'd grabbed. Luckily the guys who put you there made two fatal errors; turning their back the second they turned the thing on and failing to remove the boxes stacked, rather handily, in increasing size like a set of stairs. You quickly get the crowbar back, but the rest of your guns have to be earned again.

What about Dishonored? When your allies, after you do the supposed "final mission", betray you and drop you off to Daud's lair in a flooded district. Sure, it's optional to get your stuff back, but come on, you most likely got a bunch of good equipment that you've been saving.

Half Life. It happens in the middle of the game when poor Gordon gets knocked out by dumb soldiers, stripped of his weapons and he needs to reobtain his arsenal all over again.
Then there's the ending where he is stripped of his weapons AGAIN. Gordon is given an ultimatum ending: work for gman or totally dying by aliens while unarmed.
AND Gman let Gordon keep the HEV suit in the ending. But in the beginning of Had Life 2, Gordon is without his armor! Gman totally nicked that too!

Odyssey and Brotherhood does the same! I think it's another trope, "a taste of power", many games (FF6 & 12, most NFS games, Dragon Age 2, Force Unleashed, Far Cry Blood Dragon, Chaos Legion) have the first level with you being overpowered and then take stuff away from you, it's less egregious in racing games where you lose your car, of course... But losing skills and having to re-learn them is Ubisoft's favorite trope, notice how rarely you start as a fully trained assassin and in those cases, you get heavily injured or something.

Final Fantasy 8 has a variation on this in the final dungeon of all places. True, the game doesn't steal your stuff but it does prevent you from using any items, magic, summons, limit breaks or other commands in battle AND removes your ability to save the game inside the dungeon until you unlock them again! One at a time that is, by defeating bosses. Without most of your abilities.

Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark actually opens with some dark elves stealing all the stuff your character would have acquired in the previous NWN expansion. What was really memorable about that to me was that you play through two of the game's three chapters before you finally confront the dark elves who stole your stuff, and the dialogue options allow you to play as if the only reason you'd been following the game's main quest was because you wanted to get your stuff back.

Fun fact about Eventide, before reaching the island (via raft or cryonis, up to you), you can drop some weapons and items and then pick them up for the run. Beware, though, because once the test is over, you'll lose everything you picked. Including your weapons you dropped previously. To keep them and everything you collected on the island, just drop them before placing the final orb and you can keep everything.

Add Metal Gear Solid 3 to that too, where they take away all your weapons, equipment, camouflage and med gear, leaving you to run around topless with just a fork and an empty revolver. Oh, and a slightly altered aiming view thanks to Ocelot's showing off also completely ruining your perfectly good eye.
Snake might get to keep his trousers, but I think he'd have given them up (if you ask Sigint, anyway) to have his eye back no matter how well he rocks the eyepatch.

I'm pretty sure there's going to be a Part 2 to this video. Between old-timey shooters trying to make sure you couldn't hoard powerful weapons from early levels to make the late game easy, story-driven games trying to find a way to make the player feel the character's loss, and sequels/chapters that just can't/don't check your inventory from the end of the last section, losing useful items is a pretty common occurrence in video games.
I'd like to specifically call out the strategy games, city-builders, roguelites, etc with random events that just take stuff from you. You can't plan for them, except by hoarding enough stuff to make sure you can carry on no matter what events get thrown at you.

Or when a mission decides to make you do stuff without using YOUR stuff.
Star Trek Online(an MMO) has a LOT of story missions, and some of these disable your stuff to force you to do the mission without it. You technically still have all your stuff, you just can't use it. Examples:
Coliseum: You get trapped in a gladiatorial arena where most of your gear doesn't work, and have to get out without using it, then find a way off the planet.
Step Between Stars: you are exploring an alien space station and have to make a quick escape... in a borrowed alien ship... with junk gear.
Temporal Ambassador: a temporal paradox occurs and crates an alternate timeline where you're a slave to the Tholians, it does BOTH of the above AND forces you to wear a prison suit for most of the mission.

You're forced into what is essentially a boss fight/mook rush against the most powerful Splicer you've seen at that point with only your Wrench, Electro-Bolt, Incinerate, and Telekinesis. Meanwhile Peach has a GUN, can see you through the fog of the boss room, has allies in the form of other Splicers, Turrets and security bots/cameras. Also did I mention he has a GUN?? On higher difficulties this is a slap in the face as Plasmids drain your Eve Meter in about 2 uses...

-you're far more powerful as you're in endgame at that point. Your Gene Tonics(assuming you prepared beforehand) and weapon arsenal can carry you to the second dose without much of a hassle.
-at least it raises the Plasmid it gives you at each cycle to its highest Rank(save the few that don't have upgraded versions), so you get to try try them out in combat against mooks (my first playthrough had me use the Swarm Plasmid for the first time there and as a result I'm sold on it in each subsequent playthrough)

For a real oldie.... Chrono Trigger After the Fall Of Zeal, you are imprisoned aboard the airship Blackbird and your weapons, armor, money and items have all been confiscated. However, depending on how much you have used Ayla you can use her (if you placed her in the party before triggering the event) to bypass the stealth section as she is the only character who fights with her hands.

Wouldn't count. These are games where your inventory of items you actually spent your time acquiring were taken from you. This doesn't apply to items you started the game with. Otherwise, all Metroid Prime games and Castlevania: SOTN would have also qualified for this list. This type of thing kind of happens with Ducktales 1 & 2 as well for the NES, as all of the treasures you've acquired during the game have to be given to Glomgold towards the end. But you do eventually get them back after beating the final boss.

Suddenly the weapon you've grown so used to using throughout the entire game is suddenly ripped away from you, forcing you to rely on Beast to protect you from the Heartless you would otherwise dispatch with ease. Oh and in addition to losing your weapon, Donald and Goofy leave you too...great

Granted you don't have to be captured if you fight Cauthrien and win, but waking up in nothing but a loin cloth in the prison was likely to happen on at least one playthrough. I'm not sure if anyone plays this game or even knows about it, but "Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark" starts with an epic prologue with an evil drow queen wanting to invade the surface. But plot twist! You happen to be in the town just above the entrance to the Underdark and to keep you from coming down to defeat her, she sends one of her top tier graduate assassins to murder you while you were sleeping. Ha ha!!........Well, what actually happens is that the assassin got too greedy for its own good and decided to first steal all your clothes and anything you've collected from your previous adventures BEFORE killing the owner, who was a monk that goes on to kill undead dragons, giant floating eyeballs with tentacles, and an ancient race of evil squid people that can control you if you don't have a special helmet before you finally get all your good stuff back. There are several routes you can go and if you don't know where the chest is, you end up doing everything before getting your gear from that random chest in the middle of the drow outpost camp. I had a Robes of the Dark Moon and, oh boy, was I literally speed-running through the rest of the game. But yeah that's my "moment that game steals all your stuff". :)

So, you're the magical hero of the land, you're travelling around with a wealth of rare, expensive and extremely powerful weapons and armour, some of which may even be mythical weapons of legend not seen by human eyes in hundreds. maybe even thousands of years.
Somehow, (because story reasons..) you get captured, stripped of your items and thrown in jail.
Many months or years later, you finally get a chance to escape from prison. As you're fighting your way out, you stumble upon a chest in the guards quarters. To your amazement, this chest contains LITERALLY ALL OF YOUR GEAR from years before! Weapons, Armour, potions, money, food, everything.....
    ....Wait, what?
You're telling me I've been locked away helplessly for YEARS, and literally NO-ONE went through my stuff and helped themselves to it?
The evil ruler who orchestrated my imprisonment wasn't curious as to what I was packing? The guards didn't have an absolute field day with my weapons and armour?
    NO-ONE STOLE MY MONEY???
They couldn't even be bothered to move it all to a different, secure location?
No. They just thought they'd keep all of this stuff together neatly, in the same castle/prison that the dude you took it from is being held in, just on the off chance that he might one day want it back.....
    So nice of them!

There is a way you can still keep your weapons for Eventide Island except your clothes.
All you have to do is land in the water and swim to the shore. When you get to shore begin to barely walk on land then drop the weapons you want to keep. After the cut scene your items will still be on the ground.
I did this the first time I played but I don't know if they patched it out somehow. When I did it I approached the island from the left side near some rocks. There is a section of land near a tree that doesn't trigger the cut scene until you walk passed it. That's where you can drop items and not worry about them falling in the water. I know that's not the point of the trial but it makes it way faster to get through.
