BioShock Infinite is not that confusing. Booker DeWitt is distraught that he slaughtered everyone at the Battle (see: Massacre) of Wounded Knee, so he gets baptised and renames himself as Zachary Hale Comstock and builds a floating city in the sky. Scientists realise that trans-dimensional travel is possible, thanks to the same quantum floaty technology that keeps Columbia from crashing into the sea, tears in the time-space continuum happen as a result (which is why music from the future can be heard in the game, as the music was heard via tears and copied), Comstock takes his own daughter from another dimension because messing with the space-time continuum makes you old and infertile (it also gives you nosebleeds), and he does this by telling Robert Lutece (Rosalind Lutece from another dimension) to offer to clear Booker's massive debts if Booker gives the baby (Anna, aka Elizabeth) to Comstock but Booker in that dimension immediately regrets this and goes after his daughter (Anna, aka Elizabeth) which causes Elizabeth's finger to be cut off at the last minute when the tear closes behind her. Robert and Rosalind Lutece (same person from different dimensions) take Booker to the lighthouse aka rocket silo off the coast of Maine and he is taken to Columbia to get the girl back, because jumping to another dimension confuses you, as all memories converge into one big mess. Comstock has a vision (through a tear) of Booker coming back for his daughter so creates the idea of the false shepherd depicting the hand tattoo AD which he saw in the tear vision. Comstock discovers Elizabeth's ability to open trans-dimensional tears and locks her in a tower on Monument Island with a machine called the Siphon, built to keep her power under control, and guarded by a huge mechanical bird called Songbird, built by some guy called Fink. Comstock then tells everyone that Elizabeth was born by him after 7 days of pregnancy and Lady Comstock initially agrees but then realises that Elizabeth is not her daughter and protests so Comstock kills Lady Comstock, blaming the death on Daisy Fitzroy who just happened to be hanging around at the time. Daisy runs off to form the Vox Populi, a gang of impoverished and non-white/underclass people who are discriminated against in Columbia, which is basically the land of racism and religious fundamentalism. Long story short, Booker eventually kills Comstock and ends up in Rapture after he and Elizabeth go through a tear, while Elizabeth states that there are constants, variables, and multiple lighthouses (dimensions) and brings Booker back to the convergence point (the baptism), where he either accepts and becomes Comstock or changes his mind and rejects the baptism and so remains as Booker DeWitt, but since the baptism is a fixed point in time (Doctor Who fans), the only way to break the cycle is for Booker to die, so Comstock never exists in the first place, otherwise the story keeps repeating. Booker allows Elizabeth to drown him in the river there and then, while multiple versions of Elizabeth (from multiple dimensions) fade away in front of him, signifying the existence of Elizabeth in the multiple dimensions has now been deleted. You can tell that it is a repeating story, because there is a point near the start in the fairground where you see the Lutece twins (same people, really, but that's just semantics) with a huge chalk board and a coin that you flip. The board shows that heads has come up 122 times in a row, showing that Booker has been through that exact place at that exact time 122 times in a row. There are also comments by the Lutece twins when you pick the badge/medal/medallion, either the bird or the cage, that show that Booker has been there before, as well. There is a significance to the number 122, which would take me ages to write here so look it up, but there is the fact that on the lighthouse, you ring the first bell once (1), the second bell twice (2) and the third bell twice (2). Makes sense to me.

I would tell her that she needs to go find the spiciest curry she can barely handle and eat it, but pneumonia is not to be trifled with. I love the entire cast at OX but Ellen loves KOA as much as I do and I don't think the rest of them care for it much. It is a bit heavier on British accents than most RPG, at least without influence by Peter Mullenue (apologize if misspelled), but it's a great game and I play it more than I do Diablo III.
Bioshock 2: Subject delta is literally forced to shoot himself at the start of the game, only to be ressurected years later, where he gets cool new plasmids and an awesome drill.

Here's a couple you forgot: 1. all system shock and Bioshock games. Besides a major spoiler for the ending and after credits stinger for Infinite, the other games use Pattern Buffers from Marathon except unlike Marathon they actually work as opposed to functioning like checkpoints you use whenever you want. (As Metroid 2 did with its save stations, with Prime's appearing based on System Shock's) In the System Shock games however, you need to switch them on first. In SS1, failure to do so makes the machines turn you into one of SHODAN's cyborgs instead and if you don't have enough nanites (read: money) in SS2, you still have to reload a save anyway. 2. Marathon Trilogy: The Pattern Buffers make their debut here but unlike system shock, they are basically starposts from Sonic that you can use whenever you want like a traditional save game, now functioning as quicksaves in newer engine port builds. Long before this, our protagonist died himself but was resurrected at least 300 years before the events of the first game as a Battleroid cyborg, the Marathon version of the Spartan II's. 3. New Sonic the Hedgehog: The antagonist, the angered subconscious mind of an elder God given form kills Sonic and proceeds to enact Armageddon itself. Barely surviving black holes opening and destroying the world, Sonic's friends retrieve the chaos emeralds and his new girlfriend uses them to bring him back from the dead, sealing the deal the same way as a Grimm fairy tale. 4. Super Meat Boy: you thought it was just in gameplay that Meat Boy dies and comes back instantly? Think again. The comic book "manual" that comes with the physical edition of the game, at least on PC as well as the cutscene right before the final boss reveals that Meat Boy actually does get killed constantly but because he's just that awesome, he keeps coming back. The Hell chapter reveals all his dead copies end up in hell as zombies as there isn't room in heaven for them all. Presumably Lucifer gives them special privileges as they are never bad enough to deserve going to him. 5. Blood: At the start of Blood, tcheronbog kills all of his Cabal cult's leaders including our protagonist, the vampire cowboy Caleb, who looks like Alucard/Dracula from Hellsing only in black clothes instead of red. Being a vampire akin to Dracula from Hellsing and/or Akumajou Dracula, he comes back to life in the very first level, climbing out of his crypt in a cemetery while making an Army of Darkness joke.
6. Both Kain and Raziel from the Legacy of Kain franchise start their first game dying and being resurrected as the badasses you control through the game.
Andy inviting us to watch another video while gesturing confidently at blank whiteness for a while made me die laughing, so thanks to whoever edited this (don't worry, I got better)

Orion Hunter I can get that. Tali is the one for me. Left that racist Ashley in the dust. Mostly only chose her in the first game because ambiguous dialogue options don’t let me know wether this will be a productive pat on the back, or if it will lead to a long and uncomfortable scene in which I watch Shepard flirt with a racist.
Jake Cotton I found that out after I had already started on the irreversible path. As soon as I could I was outta there. A dialogue option I thought would be “go kiss Garrus then” turned out to be... well... you know...that. So I chose Tali because she is great. Never left my girl tali after that.
Or maybe in the 'quick time events'. I feel like that one is way more common nowadays. A lot of devs don't opt for cut scenes as much from what I've seen, but in a quick time event you can do some really cool shit that you can't do in the regular game. Kind of a shame, really.
Planescape Torrment is the granddaddy of this trope, as The Nameless One’s entire journey is to figure out why he can’t stay dead. He’s brushed off brutal death so many times, his body is completely covered in scars.
Shadow of Mordor/Shadow of War also works because you can canonically die an infinite number of times, and you just come right back, because ... magic?
I mean not really, you're still dead you're just an undead. It would be like saying Vampire the Masquerade also works, undead don't come back to life they just do stuff after dying.
The most recent character I know who did this was Markus from Detroit: Become Human. He got shot in the head and then literally managed to repair himself while unable to hear, see, and walk correctly AND on emergency power.
No Asura's Wrath? Come on, not only did Asura die, he forced his way back into the world of the living on his own, he did it like three times, and went to crush everyone in his way shortly after. Doesn't that deserve a mention at least?
Spoilers for Titanfall 2 (like really its amazing play it) So you're not going to mention how in Titanfall 2 BT died twice in one game and was fine Edit: he's hinted to be alive but I chose to think he is because he is the best giant robot ever and I cried when he sacrafised himself to save the planet and I really want him to be alive
Whenever a game doesn't reload your last save when you die, but instead just respawns you somewhere nearby, I just assume all those deaths are canonical and the protagonist is the most nonchalant immortal around.
what about Saints Row? You get betrayed & blown up in the first game's final mission, only to start the sequel in the prison hospital after major reconstructive surgery that may or may not include a sex change because you apparently just ended up disfigured & comatose....
and yet only thing anyone mentions after you wake up from the coma is whether or not you got a new haircut. tho in the 4th game if your the female Boss you have a convo with Asha and mention you had horrible childhood and when you joined the saints you were so shy you never spoke to anyone and hid your gender from everyone.
In my headcanon retcon, the player from Saints Row 1 did die. My female SR2 character was modeled after my favorite gang recruit he would pick up before every activity or mission. So, the Boss of the Saints didn't get a sex change-- she got a promotion!

I vaguely remember there's a list of scientific factors that have to be present for something to be classified as Alive, one of them being it has to be able to die. The go to consultant for this would of course be Jane, but I really don't want her to Experiment ANY MORE. Whispers: she might get a bit carried away. The clone body count is mounting up.
What about A Crack in Time? Ratchet was shocked in the chest (followed by falling off of the edge of the Great Clock) and Clank had to go back in Time in order to save him.

If we're counting undeadideadness on this list, then obvious follow-up entries include Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines (where you die and are turned into a vampire in the first 20 seconds) and Planescape: Torment (where you wake up on a mortuary slab and canonically die and come back to life multiple times as you play through the game).
Guys, just had a decent video idea, Top Farmable Locations/Goods in video games! Here's an idea for one, The Visionary's Hut in Witcher 2 for Harpy feathers. You could easily get 100 in 10 minutes, and they sold for 9 orens a piece! All in all 20 minutes work would net you 1,800 orens!

What about Kratos? Died after he got impaled by a giant spike thrown by Ares in God of War 1. Then died again in God of War 2 after being stripped of godly powers and stabbed by a god killing sword. Then fell of Mt. Olympus into the river Styx in God of War 3.
Hey, where's Breath of the Wild Link? You do know he eventually learns he essentially died by finding the very spot where he fell, right? The final memory? Nightbreed! I've been trying to remember the name of that game for literally a decade. All I remembered about it was that you were a patient at a mental institution that escapes and drives a car around a top down map trying to avoid police roadblocks and running out of fuel. Even after all these years all it took was two seconds of the music to bring it all back!
Fun fact, the human head remains alive and conscious for about 30 seconds after decapitation. Doctors have observed this on people executed via guillotine.
@B.J. Wise well there was a doctor who called out to the beheaded and his eyes opened and focused on the doctor. It didn't appear to be involuntary spasms but a conscious reaction. But that's just one case that I read.
And Fire Emblem Awakening’s Robin don’t count? He/She literally disintegrates if they kill Grima due to being Grima’s heart, yet come back if they got married? At least Shepard’s revival was due to science, despite how little that makes sense, but it’s better than the Power of Love

Dude! Bioshock 2? That game where you're forced to blow your own head off in front of your adopted daughter and then get resurrected by said daughter years later? C'maaaaaaan.

"I'm pretty sure that was more than 3 seconds" Every time I watch a movie or play a game that shows a timer, I start counting down in my head to see if it checks out. It very rarely does.
One surprising exception: the 1989 Batman. When Joker tells a helicopter to pick him up in ten minutes, it shows up ten minutes later almost down to the second.
I remember Booker dying in BioShock Infinite, but I'm still wrapping my head around the many timelines
BioShock Infinite is not that confusing.
Booker DeWitt is distraught that he slaughtered everyone at the Battle (see: Massacre) of Wounded Knee, so he gets baptised and renames himself as Zachary Hale Comstock and builds a floating city in the sky. Scientists realise that trans-dimensional travel is possible, thanks to the same quantum floaty technology that keeps Columbia from crashing into the sea, tears in the time-space continuum happen as a result (which is why music from the future can be heard in the game, as the music was heard via tears and copied), Comstock takes his own daughter from another dimension because messing with the space-time continuum makes you old and infertile (it also gives you nosebleeds), and he does this by telling Robert Lutece (Rosalind Lutece from another dimension) to offer to clear Booker's massive debts if Booker gives the baby (Anna, aka Elizabeth) to Comstock but Booker in that dimension immediately regrets this and goes after his daughter (Anna, aka Elizabeth) which causes Elizabeth's finger to be cut off at the last minute when the tear closes behind her. Robert and Rosalind Lutece (same person from different dimensions) take Booker to the lighthouse aka rocket silo off the coast of Maine and he is taken to Columbia to get the girl back, because jumping to another dimension confuses you, as all memories converge into one big mess. Comstock has a vision (through a tear) of Booker coming back for his daughter so creates the idea of the false shepherd depicting the hand tattoo AD which he saw in the tear vision. Comstock discovers Elizabeth's ability to open trans-dimensional tears and locks her in a tower on Monument Island with a machine called the Siphon, built to keep her power under control, and guarded by a huge mechanical bird called Songbird, built by some guy called Fink. Comstock then tells everyone that Elizabeth was born by him after 7 days of pregnancy and Lady Comstock initially agrees but then realises that Elizabeth is not her daughter and protests so Comstock kills Lady Comstock, blaming the death on Daisy Fitzroy who just happened to be hanging around at the time. Daisy runs off to form the Vox Populi, a gang of impoverished and non-white/underclass people who are discriminated against in Columbia, which is basically the land of racism and religious fundamentalism. Long story short, Booker eventually kills Comstock and ends up in Rapture after he and Elizabeth go through a tear, while Elizabeth states that there are constants, variables, and multiple lighthouses (dimensions) and brings Booker back to the convergence point (the baptism), where he either accepts and becomes Comstock or changes his mind and rejects the baptism and so remains as Booker DeWitt, but since the baptism is a fixed point in time (Doctor Who fans), the only way to break the cycle is for Booker to die, so Comstock never exists in the first place, otherwise the story keeps repeating. Booker allows Elizabeth to drown him in the river there and then, while multiple versions of Elizabeth (from multiple dimensions) fade away in front of him, signifying the existence of Elizabeth in the multiple dimensions has now been deleted.
You can tell that it is a repeating story, because there is a point near the start in the fairground where you see the Lutece twins (same people, really, but that's just semantics) with a huge chalk board and a coin that you flip. The board shows that heads has come up 122 times in a row, showing that Booker has been through that exact place at that exact time 122 times in a row. There are also comments by the Lutece twins when you pick the badge/medal/medallion, either the bird or the cage, that show that Booker has been there before, as well. There is a significance to the number 122, which would take me ages to write here so look it up, but there is the fact that on the lighthouse, you ring the first bell once (1), the second bell twice (2) and the third bell twice (2).
Makes sense to me.

How about pretty much every single God of War game? It seems like Hades should just have a revolving door installed for Kratos, because every time he gets killed and sent there, he just kinda... walks back out.

I would tell her that she needs to go find the spiciest curry she can barely handle and eat it, but pneumonia is not to be trifled with.
I love the entire cast at OX but Ellen loves KOA as much as I do and I don't think the rest of them care for it much. It is a bit heavier on British accents than most RPG, at least without influence by Peter Mullenue (apologize if misspelled), but it's a great game and I play it more than I do Diablo III.

Bioshock 2: Subject delta is literally forced to shoot himself at the start of the game, only to be ressurected years later, where he gets cool new plasmids and an awesome drill.

Here's a couple you forgot:
1. all system shock and Bioshock games. Besides a major spoiler for the ending and after credits stinger for Infinite, the other games use Pattern Buffers from Marathon except unlike Marathon they actually work as opposed to functioning like checkpoints you use whenever you want. (As Metroid 2 did with its save stations, with Prime's appearing based on System Shock's) In the System Shock games however, you need to switch them on first. In SS1, failure to do so makes the machines turn you into one of SHODAN's cyborgs instead and if you don't have enough nanites (read: money) in SS2, you still have to reload a save anyway.
2. Marathon Trilogy: The Pattern Buffers make their debut here but unlike system shock, they are basically starposts from Sonic that you can use whenever you want like a traditional save game, now functioning as quicksaves in newer engine port builds. Long before this, our protagonist died himself but was resurrected at least 300 years before the events of the first game as a Battleroid cyborg, the Marathon version of the Spartan II's.
3. New Sonic the Hedgehog: The antagonist, the angered subconscious mind of an elder God given form kills Sonic and proceeds to enact Armageddon itself. Barely surviving black holes opening and destroying the world, Sonic's friends retrieve the chaos emeralds and his new girlfriend uses them to bring him back from the dead, sealing the deal the same way as a Grimm fairy tale.
4. Super Meat Boy: you thought it was just in gameplay that Meat Boy dies and comes back instantly? Think again. The comic book "manual" that comes with the physical edition of the game, at least on PC as well as the cutscene right before the final boss reveals that Meat Boy actually does get killed constantly but because he's just that awesome, he keeps coming back. The Hell chapter reveals all his dead copies end up in hell as zombies as there isn't room in heaven for them all. Presumably Lucifer gives them special privileges as they are never bad enough to deserve going to him.
5. Blood: At the start of Blood, tcheronbog kills all of his Cabal cult's leaders including our protagonist, the vampire cowboy Caleb, who looks like Alucard/Dracula from Hellsing only in black clothes instead of red. Being a vampire akin to Dracula from Hellsing and/or Akumajou Dracula, he comes back to life in the very first level, climbing out of his crypt in a cemetery while making an Army of Darkness joke.
6. Both Kain and Raziel from the Legacy of Kain franchise start their first game dying and being resurrected as the badasses you control through the game.
I've died twice now in Graveyard Keeper. It's a fun game, but really, the keeper could be more impressed with the fact that he's immortal!
Andy inviting us to watch another video while gesturing confidently at blank whiteness for a while made me die laughing, so thanks to whoever edited this (don't worry, I got better)

Jake Cotton I found that out after I had already started on the irreversible path. As soon as I could I was outta there. A dialogue option I thought would be “go kiss Garrus then” turned out to be... well... you know...that. So I chose Tali because she is great. Never left my girl tali after that.

Halo series. Sure you blaze down hundreds of bad guys but John is still ten times more badass in the cutscenes.
Or maybe in the 'quick time events'. I feel like that one is way more common nowadays. A lot of devs don't opt for cut scenes as much from what I've seen, but in a quick time event you can do some really cool shit that you can't do in the regular game. Kind of a shame, really.

Planescape Torrment is the granddaddy of this trope, as The Nameless One’s entire journey is to figure out why he can’t stay dead. He’s brushed off brutal death so many times, his body is completely covered in scars.
Shadow of Mordor/Shadow of War also works because you can canonically die an infinite number of times, and you just come right back, because ... magic?

The most recent character I know who did this was Markus from Detroit: Become Human. He got shot in the head and then literally managed to repair himself while unable to hear, see, and walk correctly AND on emergency power.

Whenever a game doesn't reload your last save when you die, but instead just respawns you somewhere nearby, I just assume all those deaths are canonical and the protagonist is the most nonchalant immortal around.
what about Saints Row? You get betrayed & blown up in the first game's final mission, only to start the sequel in the prison hospital after major reconstructive surgery that may or may not include a sex change because you apparently just ended up disfigured & comatose....
and yet only thing anyone mentions after you wake up from the coma is whether or not you got a new haircut. tho in the 4th game if your the female Boss you have a convo with Asha and mention you had horrible childhood and when you joined the saints you were so shy you never spoke to anyone and hid your gender from everyone.
In my headcanon retcon, the player from Saints Row 1 did die. My female SR2 character was modeled after my favorite gang recruit he would pick up before every activity or mission. So, the Boss of the Saints didn't get a sex change-- she got a promotion!

If we're counting undeadideadness on this list, then obvious follow-up entries include Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines (where you die and are turned into a vampire in the first 20 seconds) and Planescape: Torment (where you wake up on a mortuary slab and canonically die and come back to life multiple times as you play through the game).

Guys, just had a decent video idea, Top Farmable Locations/Goods in video games! Here's an idea for one, The Visionary's Hut in Witcher 2 for Harpy feathers. You could easily get 100 in 10 minutes, and they sold for 9 orens a piece! All in all 20 minutes work would net you 1,800 orens!

What about Kratos? Died after he got impaled by a giant spike thrown by Ares in God of War 1. Then died again in God of War 2 after being stripped of godly powers and stabbed by a god killing sword. Then fell of Mt. Olympus into the river Styx in God of War 3.

First thing I thought when I read the title was, The Nameless One, from 'Planescape: Torment'. He kept on waking up in the mortuary. The dude was so metal, he could wear some of his old dismembered body parts, like a bracelet made of his guts.

I've been trying to remember the name of that game for literally a decade. All I remembered about it was that you were a patient at a mental institution that escapes and drives a car around a top down map trying to avoid police roadblocks and running out of fuel.
Even after all these years all it took was two seconds of the music to bring it all back!
Fun fact, the human head remains alive and conscious for about 30 seconds after decapitation. Doctors have observed this on people executed via guillotine.

@B.J. Wise well there was a doctor who called out to the beheaded and his eyes opened and focused on the doctor. It didn't appear to be involuntary spasms but a conscious reaction. But that's just one case that I read.
