Reason for Outboard Motor Bogging Down | See What I Discovered

  • Here is a possible reason for outboard motor bogging down. My Mercury outboard was bogging and stalling at almost full throttle after about 10 mins of running. I couldn't believe it. After some research online I learned that the gray fuel line that you can buy in a kit and comes with a primer bulb is no good.
These gray fuel lines have a liner that doesn't hold up well against ethanol that is in gas.
So I bought some black rubber fuel line to replace boat gas line and that eliminates that problem.

Hi ...thanks for the tip ... what size of black fuel line do we buy and do we buy it from an automotive store or a marine store?

Very true, but the black hose breaks down over time too--best to change it often.

Thanks for informative videos, I have the same issue with my suzuki 30 hp. It starts and goes for 5 minutes and starts bogs, have some rest and the same thing again and again. I changed the fliters, water separater, fuel filter, cleaned fuel tank, changed the fuel, but it does the same thing. I will try the hose and see the result. Thaks for the video…

Hey brother, I liked ur video. Having similar problem with my 90hp. I changed my grey line out a few months ago bcuz A buddy told me it was better. After running this by my outboard mechanic he told me Down here in Florida if ur going with a black auto fuel line not a good idea. It gets very hot in direct sunlight nd even starts to melt. I thgt he was full of shit but after it has bn on for while now I think he was rgt. Just fyi. For florida I think ur better off with grey, just have to keep an eye on bcuz ur 100% correct, It does break down the liner inside after a while. Thanks for info!

I also had a grey fuel line disintegrate on me but the culprit is not ethanol which's only downside is that it attracks moisture (water) over time. Use your fuel within a month and you"ll never have problems with it. THE problem is with benzenes that are really bad stuff that apart from causing cancer will break down plastics and most rubbers. All gasolines refined from oil has it. By the way, double-check at your gas station since most (if not all) premium fuels now have ethanol added. Regards !

My motor just started this stalling issue last time out on the way back to the launch. I burn ethanol mix unleaded fuel and have for years with fuel stabil in it. I haven't changed the fuel filter in 3 years and my fuel hose is the gray line. I did put all new fuel black hose on the motor but need to replace the ball fuel line going to the motor. l'm sure that is the issue and will fix this over the off season. I live in the opposition part of the country so haven't heard about fuel line laws around here?

I had this same issue and stumbled upon your video and after I bought a new tank and put the old grey fur line on it it still wouldn’t get fuel correctly and then I found your video and checked mine and had to change it out to the automotive fuel line like you did. But now I have to pull the carb and do another cleaning because it will only run when I work the choke to keep it running

Same thing is happeing to our motor. Interesting that we have the exact same motor. Ours is a 2005 Mercury 40ELPTEFI. We don't have a gray fuel line, so fingers crossed that if we change the fuel filter, it will work.

  • @pegsclips

great tips Roland. now why would they even make a fuel line that has the liner if it creates all these issues? Glad your issues solved with the filters and fuel line replacement. 👍

Great video - I am experiencing the same issue and just ordered the new fuel line from Mercury, which does not have the liner. Quick question though. I have a 2008 Mercury 40 hp, but the fuel line is 5/16. Your new line is 3/8th. Any reason you went with the larger line or did yours come with 3/8th? Thanks agains!

Your only half way there you also need to get fuel pump diaphragm wait till you see what crumbly stuff is in there then it will run wide open you think it's okay but ours wasn't we did fuel lines and carb diaphragm ten minutes work what a difference

I was on the lake this weekend. Ran fine all morning. Started heading in at full throttle and all of a sudden it started bogging down. And I heard a grinding as it was bogging down and then shut off. Did you hear that grinding noise as it was bogging down at full throttle? I was able to get half throttle and run it back to the camper. Now I’m here. Lol

Any updates? Same issue here, 5hp merc. Will run fine for a little while, and then it gradually loses power and then bogs down and makes a grinding noise. Let it sit for a few mins and it runs good but it happens again. Currently using a grey line.

Just so you know if you get caught with black fuel line by the Coast Guard it is a big fine for not having gray marine fuel line I have received this ticket in the St. Lawrence seaway on my 1987 Boston whaler

  • @zlvirag
    @zlvirag ปีที่แล้ว

that makes no sense, the stuff blocking the fuel filter will stay there, it will not travel back when you shut it off, ...what might happen is that the pressure built up in line might push past filter as engine just sits, then will run on that fuel. ...I've had grey fuel line on my merc 50 4 stroke for ,oh 20 yrs, never heard of this, nor did it ever starve for fuel, just sayin....

How about dont run ethanol fuel in outboard motors. Premium 90 octane recreational fuel is 10x better for outboards
