    Question of the Day: What else would you like to know about the Boss Katana Mini or Fender Champion 20 amps?

    I chose the Katana because I can strap it to my head and chase my kids around the house while practicing.

    I use a $53.99 rechargeable power brick to power both my pedals and my Boss Katana Mini. it works fine. With max volume it reaches 80-ish db within a 5ft radius. That is equal to a normal sized amp with its volume on 11 o'clock. Almost mid way. . With the aux out you can plug it into a PA to get a louder sound. The delay is also a "secret" reverb also if you max the level and reduce the time to nothing or almost nothing. At max it does stay more or less clean. Point of breaking up. .

    I’ve set my Champ 20 on Blackface Amber voice (Princeton) a few years ago and haven’t moved it since. It has great cleans, good breakup and the effects are more than enough. Boss Katana tones have always sounded too digital and plasticky for my taste.
    As it is already 2022 in our GMT +8 time zone, this was the first video I’ve watched in the new year. Wishing you all the best in this upcoming year Deric, thanks for your content and stay safe!

    Apples and oranges. You need a cart to carry the fender amp. Absolutely love mine. Enough volume to match your un amplified voice for busking. It is also small enough to walk and play. It also works great as a preamp for a louder speaker
    Only design flaw. Placement of powder switch means it is way too easy to turn the amp on while you're putting it away
    That means dead batteries when you go to use it again
    .Add something to shield switch from accidental power ons. Huge success in a micro amp; excellent clear tone. A friend, way better than me, couldn't help from sitting there envying the tone of this little amp against his Street Cube amp. Yeah, volume is stronger on bigger, more expensive amps. But, that is not the point of an amp lighter and smaller than your kid's lunch box.

    You mention, too, that they're two different units for different purposes of use, given their size.
    If I wanted to take it everywhere, I would choose the Katana,
    If I only use it at home, or if I take it out somewhere I can carry it in my car, I would choose the Champion.

    Always a pleasure watching your videos. I was going to go with the Katana Mini but after I heard the crunch sound on the Fender. That did it for me. Louder, bigger sound and more effects. Of course if you buy the Katana and buy a few pedals, that might work. But with the Fender I guess size does matter...oops. I do have the Blackstar Fly 3 combo amps. Their sound is great!! Thank you for posting this. Makes my decision easier. Go Fender.

    Having a pile of rechargeables and charger made the Katana and easy decision for me. But I'm really impressed by that Fender 20, too. Lots of great choices compared to what we had in the 70s and 80s. I like that Squire, too. Did you replace the origin neck pickup, or no ?

    • @5MinuteMusic
      @5MinuteMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree, I wish I had these choices when I was starting out!
      I bought the Squire used and it already had Lollar pickups installed, upgraded switches and wiring, brass saddles installed, and the back of the neck had been sanded and refinished with a satin finish. It had all the stuff done to it that I wanted to do. Thank you for watching and commenting!

      Yeah I don't have chargeable AAs so it ends up being like 150€ and and at that point I can spend 100 more and get a 15 W tube combo that's loud AF with powerscaling... there arr cheaper battery amps that have internal lithium ion batteries. I wish this one had it. Because the portability is fantastic, I can put it in a large gigbag along with a few pedals, that's cool. If I ever start teaching, I l need something like that.

    using the wall plug you get full power of the katana on battery power you dont get full power of the katana.. you play play small venues with either amp unless you mic them up to a pa.. the katana has delay effect as a seperat opion true but you have clean crunch and the brown channel so 3 channels on the katana also when you look at a great tone at low volume sorry but the katana wins hands down the dirty channel on the fender amp sucks also use a guitar with humbuckers single coils never sound good with any sort of distortion.. also as a side note putting a 20 watt amp loaded with toys compared to in this case the more basic katana mini well thats just not fair to the katana , i get you really like your fender modeling amps but there is a limit you know .. they are not even in the same class. now take a real video on comparing something like the katna mini to the black star version then you have some hope for fairness. in power features and so on , all this does here is slam the katana down really bad , i get what your talking about but your choice is well not very well thought out ..

  • @pjo1964
    @pjo1964 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I have both so it don't matter.
    Katana for battery portable, Fender 20 for bedroom, and Spectra 225 for gigging. And a PA if i need more.
    I'm set.

    Champ 20 is pretty good, BUT the treble is useless. I use it with the treble all the way down and it is still a bit trebly for my taste (especially with single coils). Wish it was a better design in that regards

      FX loop? My amp is too bright and I have an EQ in the loop, 6.4k basically on 0. Works great, killed the fizz in high gain.

  • @daviddigital6887
    @daviddigital6887 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just use dollar store batteries. Stay stocked up. Even with my 1 Spot it is noisy but too much for just amp with no pedals hooked up. Roland claims their magic power supply is the answer ? When cost half as much as the amp. On the batteries it is quite. I have a Fender too an it makes no where near the noise as the tiny boss.
    You do gotta love that Brown sound setting though. I think its the best built in OD of any practice amp ive owned and ive had a few since the 80s.
    I personally think the Boss is for the guy or gal that just wants something new or extra. The Fender would take all the pedals you might want. The Boss is what it is and aint gonna be much else. The Delay is very limited VS a pedal. I would buy my kid the Champ before the Boss.
    Edited to say that the Boss will handle a multi effect modulation board very nicely but not the pedals.

    which one do you recommend for Clean, Rock and Metal for home practice and playing along with backing tracks ...is Katana mini ok with sound to play with backing tracks or we need more louder amps like fender champian 20 or roland cube 20X etc

    • @harryflocyberman
      @harryflocyberman ปีที่แล้ว

      I play backing tracks through my computer sound system comprising of 4 speakers a center speaker and a sub woofer and the Boss Katana mini easily handles it, in fact I am often told to turn down this tiny amp because it gets really loud. I am seriously considering buying the big version of this amp to use live because this tiny amp sounds sooooo good.

      @harryflocyberman ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wolfpacak47 I haven't had the opportunity to try the black star, but it was definitely under consideration before I purchased the Boss Katana. I watched several videos on mini amps, it's hard to gauge exactly what they sound like through a computer sound system. But to my ears the Boss had the sound and features I been looking for in a mini amp. Not only does it sound fantastic with my custom telecaster but also with my acoustic guitar to my surprise. For a tiny low wattage amp it produces a hell of a good tone. Don't get me wrong, I liked the black star a lot, either of these mini amps would be a good choice I think. It's all a matter of personal taste I think, just because I think the boss is the best, it just means it sounded the best to my ears, it may not to your ears.

      You're absolutely right. But, the main reason it sounds so bad like crap, is because he thinks scooping all the meds out makes it sound better which actually makes it sound 10 times worse the meds need to be cranked all the way up for rock and roll especially on a digital amp like that
