    One aspect that this show had over the original was that the narrative didn't frame Adult/Teenager relationships as romantic. Tabby is rightfully creeped out by Wes' uncomfortable advances on her.

      I mean, yes and no. Wes tried to kiss her, manipulated her to make her stay in his house and made a whole date for her. He's a pedophile. Even so, he has no consequences for it. Tabby is still his friend, she trusts him to to take her home late in the night, when her mom accused him about being nasty and all that she was treated like she was wrong and crazy and even when he said to her mom he tried something with her he had no legal consequences and it's just there with his live. Also the fact that Imogen gave her baby to such amazing parents that are Ezra and Aria even when he's a pedophile too.
      At the start they did good, as you said they made it like something wrong and creepy, I thought they were talking the correct path but then all of this happened and tbh they just didn't do it right.

    The only things I didn’t like about the reboot was Mouse’s storyline, the A reveal and who it was, and the lil Ezria sneak at the end because it defeated the entire purpose of them calling out predatory relationships in other plot lines but then describing them as a ‘perfect couple’. Other then that, I loved the series. The cast was incredible, the episodes had me hooked, and it was promising for a first season. I look forward to where the story goes in the second season

      My thoughts exactly! The A reveal was a bit underwhelming to be honest, but it doesn't erase how enjoyable the rest of the show was. But describing Aria and Ezra as the perfect couple after making such a good plot about grooming being bad... it's like they didn't learn their lesson. Ik in the original it was Aria who found out she couldn't have kids but they could have still chosen literally any other one of the girls to opt for an adoption

      I think them calling them the perfect couple was on purpose. the girls don’t truly know who they were but who they are in the present just like the moms storyline. Also plays into the idea that you truly never what happens behind closed doors you only know what people want you to know about them.

    • @idk-man125
      @idk-man125 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@brandonpadilla5402 yeah but at the same time, for the audience that does know what happened and have now reflected on the impact that that relationship had years after the show finished, it was just a terrible choice. Like out of everyone in the OG show they update us on Ezria and tell us that not only are they happily adopting Imogen’s baby but also fulfilling their dreams and the predator has a book store? Yeah that wasn’t it. A recall to the OG in a pretty terrible way and their response to fans criticism is that they still stand by Ezria

  • @SweenyTodd98
    @SweenyTodd98 2 ปีที่แล้ว +392

    I audibly groaned when they said Aria and Ezra were adopting the baby. Because we really need to be putting another child into that groomer’s life. I mean Ezra was in a relationship with not one but two high school students! One of which he actively sought out and stalked. I knew they were going to say Aria and Ezra but I really hoped for a moment that they’d say Hanna and Caleb. What was the point of the Wes subplot if they were going to continue romanticizing Ezra’s creepy ass!

    • @avalonperry1628
      @avalonperry1628 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      I get where you’re coming from, but I think you’re reading way too much into it. The fact is that although this show is in the same universe as the original, it’s a completely different story with completely different characters. I think the writers just wanted to feed the fans of the original show by giving some of the OG characters attention/a small place in the story, and Aria and Ezra are really the only couple that it makes sense for the writers to have adopt Imogen’s baby. Spencer and Toby were never confirmed endgame by the end of pll, Emily and Allison split according to pll: the perfectionists, andd Hanna and Caleb we’re already pregnant when the original pll ended. We know that Aria can’t have children of her own, and Ezria said they wanted children, so they were the best choice. No, I don’t condone and never will condone the way that Ezria got together and how a lot of their relationship was, but this was just a fun thing from the writers to bring in some OG characters.

    • @Starbits7

      And they always gloss over how young Alison was.
      When Ezra & Aria meet, she's 16. Alison was missing a year...and they said at one point it was 'almost' a year before that that Eza & Alison knew each other. So....she was maybe 14? or barely 15??
      So gross.
      And It did feel like they were trying to bait viewers like, if they mention Aria & Ezra maybe they will somehow convince them to join the cast or something.

      I'm 20 also, and the dialogue did seem somewhat accurate to how teens talk, especially with the over use of buzz words, because of Tik Tok, so many people over use gaslight, misogyny, stereotypes, sociopath, words like that, because teens want to sound smart and when they find out about words like that, they use them, even if it comes off a little cringe. And I think the cussing was also accurate because they're suppose to be like 15/16 and when you're that age, you still think cussing makes you sound cool and older so you do it as much as you can, until its not exciting to u anymore yanno?

    One huge issue I had with Original Sin was the lack of emphasis placed on grief and trauma. Imogen has JUST lost her mother, essentially her only parent and family, to a harrowing suicide/murder, yet barely a month later she is behaving relatively normally. After everything Tabby and Imogen have gone through with being r*ped, there's zero emphasis placed on grief and trauma and processing this. Pretty Little Liars did a good job showing grief, from the liars processing Alison's "death", to the absolutely heartbreaking performance of Emily when they find Maya's body. The girls also go to therapy relatively regularly (given the timeframe back then), to see Dr. Sullivan to resolve some of what they are going through. I think the fact that all of the girls in Original Sin are acting relatively normally without processing pain and trauma is creating a huge disconnect from reality. As you said, seeing Imogen with the Ouija board cursing out her mom for dying seems...almost rude. It's just not a natural reaction. Pretty Little Liars had wayyyy more episodes per season, which is why they were probably able to spend more time building real personalities for each girl, and giving us time to see each friendship and each relationship separately, giving us screen time to see the girls grieve, cope, and deal with their own problems. It humanized them, whereas all of the characters except maybe Tabby felt two-dimensional in Original Sin, like their only purpose was to drive the plot ahead.

    All of the things you mentioned are just typical mistakes Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa makes from one show to another (Riverdale, Sabrina, Supergirl). It's just literally like he has this type of list and follows it:
    * cringy dialogues in a "teen" style (even though NO ONE talks like that) - done,
    * the caricatured portrayal of any socially relevant topics (feminism, racism, all sorts of abusive behavior) - done
    etc.
    Just my humble opinion : stop assigning Roberto as a show-runner to potentially cool projects, he ruins them (sooner or later). If the first seasons of his projects can still be called more or less successful, it's going to get worse after that. Look at the Riverdale and Sabrina. There' s a fiasco waiting for us.

      Ugh it SUCKS to see because I wanna see these issues talked more about in shows, tv, and media but everyone who does it does it in SUCH an annoying and (like you said) caricatured way that makes me HATE IT. Like I'm a black woman, I love seeing other black women in these shows but the way Tabbi and Faran talked were just so unrealistic and cringey. It made me hate Tabby, and I was okay with Faran because she did it significantly less but it was still...weird whenever they randomly jumped into SJW mode. Especially because (at least with Faran) the topic would be set up, she'd make a comment, and then that was it (i.e. when she changed her hair, her dad getting arrested, etc.)

My teenage son and I watched the whole season together and he said multiple times "teenagers don't talk like that" or 'no one acts like that" or "Mom, no one my age dresses like that" etc. The Christmas scene had him literally laughing hysterically. Also in the original, Toby was SAed by Jenna and it was never talked about. Like really talked about. Like he was terrified by Jenna at some point. Like he was scared for anyone to be on their porch if Jenna was home. And she even slapped him. She made him do those things with him and it was just left like that and they were even cool by the end of the show. Jenna actually had his number and could call him. That's so unrealistic. I'm not saying it's impossible but it's just gross that they kept them in contact. Like no one is going to keep in contact with someone who raped them if they had a choice. I do not like how the original pll handled sexual assault at all. Same with Emily, Hanna, and even Hanna's mom (officer Wilden) I do agree that the outfits were a bit off at some point. Also, why were none of them telling Imogen to sit the hell down and take her prenatal vitamins? Like why was she rippin and runnin around as pregnant as she was? If I was her friend I would leave her out of the mystery hunting. I also hate how when they went on missions they never brought weapons except for that one time. That also bothered me in the original.

    Just binged the season, I’m not crazy about it. I feel like I have more questions then answers. The whole mouse drama really confused me. The fact that her mother is keeping her locked in this bubble. Especially knowing the truth about what actually happened to mouse. It was so stupid. I thought the back story would be way better. They could have made the back story a really insane spider web. The amount of profanity in this show was absolutely ridiculous. There isn’t one character that I like more then the other. I thought the fight at the party was so stupid. Tyler getting attacked in the bathroom was laughable. I don’t feel like them all hating Karen is enough reason to become friends. I feel like none of the cast has chemistry. They feel like a bunch of puzzle pieces jammed together. Before the end of season one, of PLL, I felt like i knew the characters so well. I felt a connection to every character. With this new show I feel nothing. If one of the main characters died off, I would be fine.
    P.S
    I think what Wes did was absolutely disgusting. Plotting to get tabby to come over to his house for her flash drive. Then he is making her dinner like they’re on a date. She never agreed to that. She is in high school and he looks 40. Wes creeps me out.

    I definitely agree that they tried to cover too many topics in such s short season, and Tabby's character really suffered for it. I may have really liked her, but she was the only one who's story line MAINLY covered SA AND misogyny AND made so many obnoxious horror movie references and spelled everything out like we can make inferences, as viewers, based on her reactions to things. I like that she always spoke up for herself and said what she was feeling, especially to the awful men around her, but it felt like a lot was dumped on her character to tackle as many hot-topic issues as possible which was way too much. Mouse's story could have been so scary and intense, but it felt like Steve was about to literally do something awful, like he was an actual predator, but then her moms show up and they all hug and they take her home. Like? Send that man to prison? also, there was never a time that I suspected him as being A or leather face which was a big missed opportunity. On the flipside of that, I never felt since the moment I saw leather face that he intended to hurt the girls at all. I knew they were never in any actual danger. It really took away from the suspense. Mainly, the show doesn't focus on the "Liars" at all. The "Liars" in this show are the mothers. The daughters are all basically innocent, which is why I couldn't get invested in them. Our original liars were victims as well, but also had their own secrets of things they did that were wrong. We have Mouse's weird thing with all those parents and Tabby filming the boy's locker room, but neither of those are ever really confronted. We never learn WHY Tabby was filming those guys. Was she trying to find her attacker? Was she hoping to hear them talk about something? Did she want to make them feel violated in her own way to cope? Like what WAS that? and A being the principal was so cheap, we hardly ever see him in the show and Archie was a throw away and deserved more story line! the girls could have learned about who he was and then thought hey, maybe Archie is A or something. We also never got an Archie face reveal, which was super disappointing.

    • @emilydemille6934

      I wanted to like Tabby so bad but? While I can see several motives for her to do what she did with the filming, I can’t really forgive her for filming that. It’s predatory, not all those boys are guilty of sexual crimes. And obviously they didn’t and couldn’t consent to that. It’s not okay to assault innocent people because you were harmed. I’m human, I could see the impulse I guess? To cope in a weird way or find her attacker- try to jog your memory- but?
      None of those boys ended up being guilty as far as she knew of anything.
      The whole scene with her and Greg filming and he’s naked? I was so? Confused I guess. She’s right to be upset, but if seeing him naked without her permission is assault than why is it okay for her to have a video of him naked in literally the same shower on her laptop- that he didn’t agree to filming. Like babes he’s your victim just like you’re his now. And with Greg, while he doesn’t know it, SHE ASSAULTED HIM FIRST. It’s? It’s a tricky situation that goes so unaddressed as a viewer I can only be like, okay that’s criminal behavior. AS outlined by Tabby’s ethics herself! in the show. I would maybe find this interesting if she was framed as being? Idk less moral in practice than speech or something. If they really utilized this flaw or revenge or something. Blackmailed her with her more sinister truth and if that effected her standing as well morally good and a safe person to be around, but also! That shit would have sent her TO PRISON and it’s not even a secret that’s used in the story really. I was confused by her storyline and characterization.

    • @domsvelvetrope2379

      You do make some good points, I think the whole locker room thing was her trying to out who her attacker was due to her being at a party in the woods, which jocks were at, also because in said locker room, the jocks talk about girls they’ve been with, but I kind of agree with you, it does seem weirdly invasive & could have been played out better.

    The last 3 episodes seemed rushed. I feel like upon the A reveal they were indecisive upon the story that they want to use so it seemed kinda…blah. My thing is not enough people pay attention to the theme song so the hints that were in the theme song essentially didn’t resonate with a large group of people.
    I mean it’s the first season and there still a lot of things that need to be discussed the second season but I definitely feel like the ending wasn’t as great as it could’ve been. Honestly would prefer if they waited to do that it was real or if they have more episodes or just something so that it didn’t seem so rushed.

If you remove any of the "A" stuff (a few texts, spray painted, circled A's on posters etc) from this series, it changes absolutely nothing about it. Actually, I'd argue that the removal of the "A" stuff would make the show way more cohesive. i don't think this show, despite the name, can really be compared to PLL. especially with Roberto involved, it makes much more sense to compare it to Riverdale season one and other horror type thing. The whole aesthetic is giving very much archieverse, he even had to connect the sisters of quiet mercy, like sir, you can't connect the universes if lucy hale is in both lmao.
    Like you said, there was a bunch of good, the whole assault storyline was very well handled, and I knew who it was from the psycho scene, I was like sir I stopped trusting you episodes ago. when they sent A after him , i was like get his ass! the chase scenes were all good, very slasher vibes. and i liked that it was a self contained mystery, especially since HBO max is cancelling everything right now, but it did feel like something was missing.
    - like with Karen and kelly, i kept thinking there would be something there, but by the end of the season, i don't understand half of what kelly does. i wish they showed more of them before, in flashbacks or something, because it's never clear to me what the dynamic is. sometimes they say kelly and Karen are both equally evil, sometimes karen is the evil one and kelly is the more shy one. sometimes karen is the better dancer, sometimes kelly is. we didn't know enough about them for anything to matter or make sense.
    - i still don,t get why there was a "football team uses drugs" plot in the back, like i get it was connected to noa, but it was dropped way too quickly like none of that is resolved. i wish they gave her a more substantial story.
    - and faran, i feel like they kept doing random things with her, i liked the general theme of ballet and control and with her mom and stuff, but it's like every episode was a new random thing. there was a way to make it more coherent perhaps.
    - and mouse, her story, which psychologically is arguably the most interesting, like the trauma and everything, it also felt like it was ended too abruptly with no real resolution.
    - also, sometimes, the tabby references were so much, i was like damn is this what i sound like when i make references?
    - also also, the fact that in one season, none of these girls are queer, like okay babes, sure, we'll see about that.
    - it felt like they wanted to create an insta group of friend that love and support each other with no catty-ness, which i am okay with obviously, but like you said, except for tabby and imogen who we saw bond because they lived together and their shared trauma, the other girls never develop a genuine bond with each other, they're always doing their own thing, i don't think any of them know anything about mouse's stuff, or noa, she was always hanging with her boyfriend. i get they each have their own thing, which is cool, but i wanted a bit more connection maybe.
    - i thought the mystery of what happened to angela was cool, but we needed to see more i feel. like why would angela keep hanging with those girls if they all treated her like shit? and at the party, they said she looked like a mess, like something happened to her, and that was never addressed. it made sense to me that there would be a mastermind and a mindless brute, very slasher of them, but there was no way of guessing it was the principal and i feel lik you want to be able to guess things. like archie was guessable cuz we saw a picture of him and angela as kids, so thinking she had a brother was possible. but her dad? completely not. we were missing information for the reveal to truly be impactful.
    - also WHAT HAPPENED TO THE PEOPLE THAT WERE KILLED? WHERE ARE THE BODIES???
    OVERALL, i enjoyed the show, i liked watching every week, but it does feel like a lot of fluff and not enough neat. it's vibes and aesthetic over truly good writing that carry the show, and i wish the writing was a bit better.

    i agree with just about everything you’ve said. they became friends so fast it felt so rushed to me bc they go from not saying anything to each other to saying they’re bffs in the pilot episode felt so unearned. and then you go from from the stupid dialogue to imogen wanting to abort her baby at SIX MONTHS knowing she wouldn’t be able to like girl get it together. and then they’re all like we’re gonna kill karen and she dies and they’re all shocked when she ACTUALLY DIES was hilarious to me bc i’m like y’all just said you wanted that. and then tabby who had a movie reference every 5 seconds made me wanna claw my eyes out. the whole show trying to dive into SA and then have imogen give her baby to EZRIA OF ALL COUPLES ?!!! YOU HAD THREE COUPLES TO CHOOSE FROM (excluding emison) AND YOU CHOSE THEM?!! and then the A reveal (OF ALL NAMES THEY COULDA CHOSE) the build up was actually getting good towards the end but the mastermind behind it really made me disappointed bc it just wasn’t giving what it was supposed to give and when greg was shot i literally laughed out loud bc i didn’t even realize the principle was holding a gun. everything was so over the top but in the worst of ways. i doubt the writers planned on going past a first season bc there’s nothing to really build off of for future seasons.

      Spencer and Toby weren't thinking about kids at that time.
      Emily and Alison already had kids.
      So, Ezra and Aria make the most sense, since they said they were going to adopt. And not to mention that the Lucy Hale, who plays Aria, is friends with the actress who play Imogen irl and is also friends with the producer. And also the original actors couples would have to be willing to come back for a cameo and Lucy Hale wanted to, so it makes sense.

There was no relationship building at all. If Archie was staying with Rose Waters (Angela's mom) who was then subsequently taken to Radley after her daughter's death....HOW TF DIDN'T THE POLICE FIND ARCHIE IN THE CAGE? Are we just meant to assume Principal Clanton took him into his care after that? How would no one have noticed??

  • @foxytine7532
    @foxytine7532 2 ปีที่แล้ว +46

    I personally liked the show. Loved the kind of creepy, horror vibes.
    To me, it didn't feel like the girls became friends out of nowhere after detention. It felt more like they were bonding over their dislike for Karen but still were not too keen on going down for what happened after publishing the video of Karen cause the girls minus Imogen and Tabbi, wanted to put the blame just on these two.
    I agree that the final episode was underwhelming. It's a bit like they are not sure whether it gets a second season or not so they tried to tie up as many loose ends as possible. The A reveal was something I didn't expect cause I didn't pay much attention to the principal and Archie.
    Honestly, Aria and Ezra getting the baby was just for the fans of the original. I guess they gave the baby to Aria and Ezra cause they were the only couple in the original that wasn't able to get kids. Wasn't Hanna pregnant in the last episode? And Spencer never showed any sign that she wouldn't be able to get pregnant so they just thought that Aria and Ezra are the most obvious choice.
    Something I hated so much was that they called their couples by shipping names. I heard that they did it in Riverdale and I thought it was cringy there. I just never heard someone talking about their relationship like that. Maybe teenagers these days are, I don't know, but it just feels weird to me.
    Loved your video as always.

The actress who plays Imogen sounds so cynical all the time and her character is always so ahead of the curve and running the other girls that I SWEAR there was no way she could be a victim. I have mixed feelings about Original Sin. I like Original Sin because there was a cohesive story. Although, that story definitely revolved around the mothers more than the girls. A's motive was definitely a stretch, although much better than any of the original PLL A reveals other than Mona.
    I hope if the show does get picked up for another season, they'll flesh out the characters more, because there's not much more to their characters than the one sentence description of who they are. Karen and Kelly are the dumbest names for those characters. No one under the age of 50 is named Kelly and no one under the age of 60 is named Karen.
    Nothing will compare to the first two seasons of the original Pretty Little Liars. But after season 3a, the writers literally lost the plot. The references to the Original PLL were very heavy-handed. As far as Aria and Ezra adopting Imogen's baby, I'm going to choose to believe that nothing that happened after PLL season 3a was cannon, and Aria and Ezra broke up and then got back together after Aria graduated from university, had some life experience, and then made the decision as an adult woman to pursue a relationship with Ezra.

    I was also very underwhelmed by the reboot, though there were some parts I liked, like the mystery surrounding the mothers and Angela waters, most of it really bothered me, like the dialogue acting, and overall A reveal. It just felt like the build-up of A through the entire season was almost rushed through in the final episode, and it ended up feeling very surface-level and unsatisfying to me. I wish they had gone into Archie's backstory a little more, rather than him being this spooky killing machine. I appreciated their trying to discuss all the issues they did, like racism, sexism, and SA, but because they were trying to address everything I felt like they weren't handled all that well. Overall I didn't hate the show but I definitely didn't love it. One show I did like, for the most part, was "I Know What You Did Last Summer" on Amazon Prime. It has a very similar feel and plot to PLL, but I thought the mystery and reveal of the anonymous person was a little better.

    The blood collection scheme killed me. Oooo we have a match only 66 people to now go through. Truly a breakthrough. Their mindset the entire time while figuring out the clues was wild.

    Honestly I think that the reason most ppl enjoyed it is becuz it has everything that this generation is obsessed with in current teen dramas: a pretty cast, moody atmosphere and very brutal murders is all u need to get ppl to tune in.
    If u look at al the other popular teen dramas atm theyre all pretty much the same(Euphoria, Elite, 13RW and Winx)

      people are attracted to Original Sin because we're in another golden era of slasher movies. halloween, scream, texax chainsaw massacre are all getting a soft-reboot & people love that.

    I honestly loved this show more than the original to be honest. But I did feel like the final was a little underwhelming in my opinion

      Me too! I was surprised she didn’t like it, I enjoyed it more and more with each episode (though I haven’t seen the finale yet).

    Thank god you posted this! Like you I feel it was just average. Original Sin definitely fixed some issues like not romanticing any creepy behaviour, making A more scary, revealing everything by the finale, diversity, and I liked the parents being involved in the plot the way they were. However, I think the main issues for me were the girl's friendship, boyfriends, and the reveal. What made PLL the way it was is the main girls and their secrets together as a group as well as the things they hid from each other. But they always felt like they had a strong friendship the whole time. I never felt with O.S. that they were real friends. I think they could have either had them loosely as friends from the start or they needed more episodes to develop a stronger bond. Same goes for the relationships, like you I didn't care about any of the boyfriends/love interests and was just bored. I never felt connected to it because it needed more time to develop. As for the reveal, yes it's good that it wasn't obvious but I was disappointed because it wasn't someone connected enough to the plot for me. The Principal was too much of a basic forgettable character and A himself being an unknown face is worse. I want the reveals to be deeper and more hard hitting.
