    My, my, my, it's Diane Jessup. First Richard F. Stratton and now Diane Jessup? This fellow could have stopped with Mr. Stratton and the world would be very informed on real bulldogs, but Zeke here went above and beyond and talked to another top-notched authority on the original working/purpose bulldogs we now know as American pit bulls. DogumentaryTV, it is official. Dogumentary TV has secured its spot as TH-cam's best channel for dog lovers and producer of the best breed documentaries. You don't get much more informed on bulldogs than folks like Ms. Jessup and Mr. Stratton. And I dare say that this video was more informative than even Mr. Stratton's video. Granted, this video was more than twice as long as Mr. Stratton's video, but it is all well and good. Both videos are going to be fine watches for folks from experienced fanciers to novices and folks that are just curious to learn more about these swell dogs. I would now like to talk a little about gameness, or what I like to call grit, to folks and some jobs/activities that breeders and bulldog fanciers can use to test their bulldogs for ability, health, and the spirit/grit that is gameness. There are more ways than warring (fighting) against another bulldog. Before matching bulldogs against bulldogs, folks were doing things such as hunting large, heavy game animals such as hogs, bears, and stag along with sports like bull baiting to breed the best of their bulldogs. And folks are still doing and breeding their bulldogs for purposes like bull baiting today as well as more legal and socially acceptable purposes like hog hunting. To the bulldog folks that don't like the animal-against-animal contact of things like hog hunting, hog-dog rodeo (basically the hogging version of bull baiting), bull baiting, or the like, I would suggest weight pull, spring poling, and tug of war so that you can be showcasing and testing the power, gripping ability, and the agility real bulldogs are suppose to possess for conformation or breeding purposes,

      Yup, dogs for tough jobs. I'm pretty convinced that there is a lot from the smaller tunnel Terriers in the APBT. Working Staffies and Patterdales are still used to flush badgers and foxes from their lairs. Very much on the quiet, mind you. Powerful, athletic dogs with enough heart to go toe to toe in the black, confined space of a tunnel against bigger and very tough animals. Similar dogs have been doing similar jobs for hundreds of years. Gameness or heart, as I prefer, can be tested in many ways.
      A "new" sport is appearing in the UK where a rat is caged and hidden in an underground maze. Owners of small Terriers release their dog and they are timed to the rat, then removed. More a test of drive and brains, admittedly. I believe the idea is to re-instate the working qualities back into breeds which have suffered the humiliation of the "aren't I pretty" Show Ring.
      I feel the Bull and Terrier leading to the dogs we have now is the Swiss army knife of dogs for the working man.
      Not stating facts, just my personal musings on how the modern dogs have come about and their incredible abilities.
      Fantastic video, the most sense I've ever heard. Cheers.

      Thanks for the comment, buddy. Yes, I feel heart is a fitting name for it. Grit is another good name for it as well. Rough, tough jobs indeed. Surely heart and grit were needed for work such as pursuing quarry underground and other things. That is a mighty interesting sport you were talking about with the rat in a cage. I think I heard an individual by the name of Leri Hanson mention it once before also. It’s good to see that folks are still concerned and dedicated to the integrity of the working/game dog to create sports that simulate what the dogs were designed to do so that they never lose their essence.
      There are a number of theories about how the American pit bull--also known as pit bulldog and just simply bulldog-came about. Some folks say terrier blood was used while others say that it wasn’t. Either theory could be correct, and I would not be surprised with either one. There is one particular theory in favor of the terrier blood that says the blood from terriers and the blood from the dog that baited bulls (the original bulldog) was used to form the breed, but that one seems to be the least likely. As Diane Jessup has said:
      “the show bulldog is developed from the original working bulldog - the pit bull. The history of the pit bull far predates the time when bans on bull baiting caused blood sport fanciers to turn to fighting dog against dog. The very name "bull" or "bulldog" gives us the clue as to what the original purpose of this breed was.”
      Even so, there is still a possibility that terrier blood could have been used for the American pit bull. Now this is just the theory I’ve heard and feel is very likely, but if the blood from the large, powerful, sturdy mastiff dogs of the past used for things like war, guarding, and even sometimes hunting was mixed with the blood of smaller, agile, terriers that had a lot of grit, that could very well explain the powerful, sturdy, agile, game, medium-sized dog used for bulls that became the original bulldog that is now known as the American pit bull. I think this theory could satisfy some of theorist and explain some of those theories. Those that believe terrier blood is in the American pit bull would be right because terrier blood would have been mixed with mastiff blood. Folks that believe the American pit bull is the original bulldog would be correct because that mastiff and terrier mix would have lead to the dog used for catching and baiting bulls. Also, I can kind of see the breed being a combination of the larger mastiffs and the smaller terriers-two of the most iconic and long-standing dog types in history.

    • @1998TDM
      @1998TDM 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very interesting thoughts. Part of my thought process with the dogs comes from the common mans access to land in the UK and Europe. The Lord had big dogs, the Serfs had little ones, fitting the space and resources each had available. Dogs for big game and dogs for little game, both types for sport.
      I can't help thinking of how people lived when thinking about the breeding and development of the dogs.
      Ancient history I know, sorry. It's refreshing to be able to chat about this stuff. Cheers.

      Thank you kindly. I have heard similar things about class and the dogs kept and used by the different classes of people at the time. Here is what this individual says on that:
      “It is interesting to note, historically, that small bulldogs were often called terriers, for the bulldog itself was considered a “hound,” a hunting dog that was forbidden to peasants. Terriers were generally small dogs that were used for ratting and other small vermin, and so they were not forbidden to the poor class of people.
      In any case, it is our breed today that does all the work that the old-time bulldog did, from hunting wild boar to catching rough stock for ranchers. And yes, they are the ones once used for fighting too, but such things are only whispered about these days. One reason the two bulldogs were confused in the public mind in the middle of the 19th century was probably because the brachycephalic type still retained some fighting propensities. England made the breed the symbol of its country, even if they usually displayed the show type. But it had to be the original type that the public had in mind when Huxley was dubbed “Darwin’s Bulldog.”
      Ours, at least some of them, are still bred for performance, (hog hunting, cattle herding, weight pulling and the like) while the show Bulldog was and is bred for its odd, almost human appearance. The consequence is that the modern show bulldog cannot do ANY of the work or sport of his ancient progenitors. Because of this difference, I had once hoped to reclaim the name bulldog for our breed.”

    • @1998TDM
      @1998TDM 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aye, there was a time when pet was a human reference. I'm from the north of England originally and we still call younger family members "pet" as a term of endearment.
      Dogs have suffered terribly under this endearment. Bulldogs strikingly so.
      It's impossible to look at a dog and not see human aspirations. I adore good bulldogs, APBT's and Staffies, because they show how we can improve a dog, not handicap it for vanity.
      Dogs with that history ended up in the US to do a job, well, many jobs. I see the modern working bulldog, not show dogs, as the pinnacle of mans best friend. A tool and a companion, utterly reliable if you know how to look after your tools and absolutely loyal if you're a good leader.
      Here in NZ we still have the space, terrain and game to breed dogs for purpose, putting food on the table, not just sport. (Many pig hunters only carry a knife, when the bush is to thick for a rifle. Pigs in the bush can hit over 380lb, gutted..) Usually they are a motley pack but I guarantee you would instantly recognise the dogs that are at the sharp end, those holding the pig or wild cow. Usually the first ones to demand a chest rub when the dust has died down and some of the spoils shared, too.
      Great chat, nice to be missing out on polarised opinions and insults which conversations like this often stir up.
      Dunno if youtube is the best place for it, but cheers to Diane Jessup and Dogumentary TV for the chance.

    I was so excited to watch this video. At long last, we get to see Diane Jessup interviewed to give people information on one of the most talked about, loved, respected, feared, and controversial dogs ever created. I remember about a year ago asking Dogumentary TV if they could get into contact with Diane Jessup. To my surprised and delight, Dogumentary TV was way ahead of me and a collaboration was already in the works. Now the day has come. It was everything I had hoped it would be. I especially appreciated the information on gameness at 28:19 - 31:32 which I feel would be a great help to American Pit Bull fans and breeders to help them truly understand the essence of this trait. Thank you Dogumentary TV for what you do for this breed and for dogs in general.

    Great interview very empowering. I have always agreed that rescue groups shouldn't have dealings with the APBT. You can't help what you do not accept/understand, leave them to the like minded individuals who have embraced/accepted(not necessarily agree with or condone) the standards of those who produced them from the start. Rescue groups do more Harm than good.

      Rescue people are always getting arrested for fraud, dog abuse, and drugs. Imo, many rescues rescuing pit bulls are not rescuing them at all. Maybe some are, but it is more likely a nationwide dog trafficking ring supplyjng dogs for fights. Otherwise, it makes no sense to pull the worst pits from doggy death row, or to have yard-like "rehabs" that dogs disappear within, or to transport the pits from state to state when they're exploding from shelters in every single state to the point that rescues literally can't give them away, which they try to.
      In 2020 a rescue transport called Who Saved Who out of Arizona was picking up dogs every two weeks from Mexico (though AZ has millions) and driving them to Canada, (which doesn't want them.) Pointless and unexplainable. Even other rescues in AZ questioned this. WSW crashed the van and the owners died but the son of the owners said he was going to take over.

    I have watch this video more than one time because it is full of trustworthy, good and educative information. The knowledge Diane Jessup shared with us is very precious although for me. As a dog lover with respect of origin and understanding what the purpose is for a breed, I loved to watch this video. I have no experience with the Pit Bull but always eager to educate myself and after I have read the book The Battle over an American Icon by Bronwen Dickey and the article Dogs of Character, I understand so much more about the breed, his history and what it has become. I hope Dogumentary TV that if it's possible there will be a video with Diane Jessup but than about the Dobermann Breed. Just want to thank you both for this share !

Man, some people are just trolls. I hope this video goes viral. I learned so much here, like the Staffy Bull and AmStaff being more like the more recent show versions while the AmPit Bull is more the original working version used for catch work, bull baiting, fighting and what gameness actually means. Awesome stuff.

      A lot of americans don't like the idea that pitbull were basically made in britain + ireland and registered in the US, she says in the vid the old english bulldogs looked exactly the same as pits and that people were breeding a long time before Colby and the breed was well established before then. Over time brits and irish selected for smaller sized dogs due to dog fighting being outlawed sooner, americans kept selecting the larger dogs resulting in size dif between british/irish staff and american pit.
      She also hints that most modern pits are no where near thoroughbred.

    Wonderful video from one of, if not the most, informed person on Pit Bulls and someone who truly cares, understands, and appreciates dogs. I noticed a person on the comment thread (which may have gotten removed thankfully) that was against culling and calls it terrible as well as calling Diane Jessup a bad breeder and person. I personally would not bother trying to reason with this individual, for people have tried and were met with having their comment deleted by him/her. But I will say here what I said to him/her before he/she deleted my comments.
    Culling is the removal of an organism from the breeding program. This is usually done in two ways: spaying/neutering dogs or euthanizing. Culling is a very common, and even necessary, practice that responsible breeders use to help insure the mental and physical health, stability, and soundness of their pet and livestock animals by removing the unhealthy, mentally unstable, and/or poor-tempered animals from their breeding program so that they breed good, healthy, and properly-tempered representations of the breed they are a part of and produce.
    WILD THINGS called this nonsense and deleted my comment. I am sorry, WILD THINGS, but what people have been telling you is not nonsense. Actually, culling is quite common knowledge that many breeders, many responsible breeders I might add, do. What was said to you is actually very logical and well-thought out points that really could not be effectively argued against so you simply deleted the comments. Culling is one of the things that separates true, caring breeders from backyard breeders and puppy mills which only care about profit. It would be easy to just breed and sell every dog they have with no regard for quality and health, but they want both people and dogs to have the highest quality of life, health, and happiness. You also seem to be focused on culling as euthanizing, and sometimes euthanization is the more responsible way for the mentally unstable, and possibly dangerous, dogs that are born with some kind of mental defect (to give an example), but remember that culling is not always going to end in the euthanization. Even if culling does end in euthanization, it is most likely for a reason--and a good reason at that.

    • @jamesbeitia1353
      @jamesbeitia1353 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Gears Starting well said and I agree, sometimes culling is not an option but necessary to insure a good line of dogs not just physically but mentally. I don't have much respect for people that breed or sell dogs with health or mental issues

    • @annabell3385
      @annabell3385 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only way to responsibly breed is to cull. Anti-cullers present themselves as no-kill but it's really just to make a buck off of "special needs" and crappy, mentally deficient dogs. It's rescues that will sell anything with no liability and no take-backs, and they put a spin on it that these project dogs are found and needy rather than just carelessly bred and even outsource bred to other countries.

      Pits have been bred out the aggressiveness in general; a pit that gets aggressive is a "cur" (still a pitbull if bred from pitbulls but low quality). Game dogs that follow all the desirable standards of the pirbul should: human friendly, enjoy fighting, avoid pain and never surrender. I would punish a pitbull that doesn't follow that by neutering it and giving it as a pet, I think animals that work for you shouldn't be punished with death unless they are a serious threat to you and others. Also I would not fight my dog. Just in case I may roll it once against a wild boar but I would never pit my pit against other pit.

      A good trained dog doesn't growl to get what it wants. In doing so you are reinforcing bad behavior. Owning a dog and properly training it does not require you to reinforce bad habits. I owned over 40 dogs in my life never an issue. With aggressive, food, pecking order..even some rescued pits from fighting ring that never showed dog aggression.

    59:24: "Once again, it's not how you raise them; it's genetics and how you manage them."
    That should be tattooed to the brain of every uneducated Pit owner who thinks their dog is just like any other dog.
    Perhaps the most profound thing she argued was that there needs to be a project to get the dogs out of the hands of the ignorant and into the hands of people who can establish a plan for the long-term purpose and Improvement of the breed. The loose comparison to the Dobermans of the 70s was quite telling.

    • @mikefrost8815
      @mikefrost8815 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      People should have realised "it's not how u raise them" from the very beginning.. Not just APBT but any breed really. You can raise them with housedogs from the time they are pups. When they mature their genetics kick in and they can easily become unstable around other animal's. We only hear about pitbulls because of the damage they can do.

    • @shuael3032
      @shuael3032 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2
