Prasad Lohokare absolutely agreed. I love pits and wouldn’t really consider having anything else but I don’t recommend them for the average casual dog owner. Same would go for a rottie, a German Shepard, a Doberman... any of the strong breads. Although I could say that Pitties have noticeably less human aggression then the dogs I just mentioned, but you do have to be careful with them around other animals.
Exactly the same goes for Bull terriers. Same danger to other animals. In all honesty what sets them apart is the documented fact ( statistics) that many varieties of pit bulls lines nowdays do have a predisposition towards human aggression that Bull terriers don’t, generally speaking.
In fact, not really. The tragedy was being brought to mainstream because the fighting aspect was there since day one, that was the whole reason why they created and improved over the years that fighting instinct that they disguise under the word “ gameness”. The ppl who created them did so to fight them. Whoever tells you different is full of shit. If you read between the lines this interview, this guy (which is one of the ones that pit bull dog enthusiasts look up to) was all about that.
@@LHMOM.8610 untrue. just because someone is old doesn't make them a good or smart person. And older generations did a lot of shit dude. Alot of bad shit. To the world, to each other. Had all his books .started getting them when I was 13, I'm 47. Met him. He actually picked the dog I showed in a Massachusetts conformation show. Legend!!!
No, it was a wieght pull / conformation, ADBA,, MY DOGS are all game and game tested.but yes it was a adba show.. it doesn't ruin the breed.. lol. If your at a adba show and your dog is all scared up and is on fire and looks like what a apbt looks like .. then I don't see how it hurts. The dog. It's people who have no idea and breed the dog for looks rather than gameness. Please don't get it twisted,, allot of people are getting this confused.. the dog I showed that Dat was right off crenshaws Gator and the dam was Crenshaws Donna, my friend who's a breeder in Massachusetts got them rigjt off the yard.
@@James_I_Archer He really isn't dishonest he's shown the family tree and the mastiff he used to produce hulk. I agree that they aren't pitbulls and I own an American bully but it is common knowledge.
2020 and I still stand and salute you Mr stratton. I lived and breathed your books in my 20's in my 40's now, I owe everything to you about learning all about this breed. And it is all still relevant.
I remember laying in bed as a small boy with his book studying his writings and fantasizing about fighting dogs, I grew up with pits and have always kept at least 1 game bred pit as an adult. They are truly an amazing animal. Richard knew all those great dog men personally and I count you lucky to have gotten to sit and listen to him in person, thank you both for this interview.
This is the video that has been slowing things up guys. I'll be posting fan submitted videos all week. Sorry for the delay but this video was priority.
All his dogs are indeed bully bloodlines. Plus they are clearly too big for APT's. Everything above 80lbs is questionable. The biggest APT's i've seen are 77-78 lbs.
Richard Stratton is probably the most knowledgeable dogman and the reason I started watching dogumentary tv years ago.it showed up on my recommended videos again and I'm watching it
*It's 2018 and I'm still here.. it will be 2020 and I will be here.... Because it's RICHARD STRATTON!!!!* *I won't stop saying that this Interview was outstanding Zeke..* 👏
Definitely great interview! Which channels talk about the old school Pitbulls if you don't mind me asking but I'm really interested! I raised the dogs for many years and have managed to keep a few! I had people come from all over to get my pups in the 80s and 90s! I started out with some Boudreau and Carver dogs and have been fooling around with the Jeep and RedBoy mixed with some Hyde's Bloody Sunday and Grand champion Art and Davis's Midnight Cowboy! Really good mouth and no stop at all. They were dead game! But I really had some that were smart as a whip!!! Never ever produced a man biter!!!
Had a red nose who was on the smaller size but when it came to ANY other animal being around her she was the boss. I miss her and strive to find another dog like her.
AWESOME VIDEO MR STRATTON 👍 I purchased my first ADBA papered pure red back in 1985 and like you said, nobody had a clue what type of dog it was . They would just comment at how beautiful she truly was .. I purchased your book shortly after and learned all that I could . After learning the history I then would tell people that it was an American Staff Terrier as to not frighten them should they be familiar with the breed . That dog was with me for 12 years and died in my arms of natural causes . She was raised around my infant daughter and many other children and I can’t say enough wonderful things about her . I have always been extremely responsible and for that reason I’ve never had a single incident of my dogs harming another dog or biting a human . When my daughter was 2-3 we were out back playing and a large Doberman was charging across the field towards us . I couldn’t reach my daughter quick enough , but the dog was at the sliding glass doors two feet away . I opened that door and that female red took off like a gunshot straight at that Doberman . She hit that dog head on like a ram and turned that dog the other direction . She chased it away nipping at its mane and once out of sight she came straight back to us . She didn’t hurt that dog too badly other than it’s pride . She never had a fight in her life, but as you said her gameness was already bred into her . She just naturally reacted to what she saw as danger to her Master and human sister . Thank you for all of you have done and the research put into your work . I’ve been an owner for 32 years now and have spent most of that time trying to educate the public . Unfortunately where I live there are far too many irresponsible bully breed owners . However we will continue to try and shine a positive light on one of the most loyal, athletic and wonderful family dogs in the world . Peace my brother 👍✌️
After spending most of my life wanting absolutely NOTHING to do with this breed, I have now had one for 3 years, and they are definitely not for everyone....yet....at the same time, one of the absolute best breeds you can have, somehow.
I have called them Bulldog since I was able to speak. The only dogs I ever owned are Game Bulldogs. I'm 48 now and that will never change. I love my Jeep bloodline Bulldogs. In my opinion Mr Stratton is King. Great job guys. Great Job!
I am a dog lover. I watched this entire presentation. It has always been my perspective that responsibility belongs to the dog owner. If you own a chihuahua, your responsibility to keep others safe from harm is relatively small. If you own an American Pit Bull, your responsibility is huge. The breed was specifically bred to be game, to never give up in a fight. They were also bred for better strength and survivability in a fight. These traits were perfected through fighting them to show off who had the most game dog. Mr. Strtatton makes it clear that the responsible pit bull owner must keep the dog on a leash at all times and never allow it to attack another animal. My son's pit bull mix needed to be sequestered in the basement because she was determined to show off how game she was by attacking one of my dogs whenever they were together. Keeping her bound to a person or object in the house at all times would not have been fair to her, so she had her own portion of the house. A game pit bull is tenacious and does not know the word quit. Many pit bull owners simply do not possess the hyper vigilance required to be fully responsible for a game dog. Frankly, a game pit bull with all its power is an inherently dangerous animal in the typical pet environment.
Sou Brasileiro, de São Paulo, aqui adoramos os bulldogs mais o povo é muito descuidado e usam eles para caçar jacaré, piranha e até onça pintada tanto na cidade quanto na selva.
Fantastic Video thankyou so much for providing me with this video with the man you interviewed...I gained so much of a history lesson by reading his books as a young teenager I am now 45 yrs. old and this was a treat....Sincerely Thank you.
My pitt (possibly mix) showed up on my door step right before quarantine. Now I truly know patience from training him, waiting for things to open, and watching this.
I've had and bred American pitbull terriers for about 15 + years and at times had up to 40 dogs on my yard and I have yet to be disappointed.. Awesome family dog with lots of heart...
I would like to buy this gentleman a drink..wow he blew my mind and his tone of voice makes you want to listen and grab as much knowledge you can from him.🍻 cheers!
Back in the mid-80s the only thing that I had for reference was a book by RICHARD STRATTON. I raised, trained, bred and loved this breed for more than half of my life. THANK YOU RICHARD STRATTON. If it weren't for you, I'd never have had a clue. This is the only breed for me.
Yep the real pit bull I love to death but also love the game Staffordshire bull terrier ,get a old type s.b.t they're the nearest thing to a game pit bull just smaller version lol both dogs are the best.
Mr Stratton back in the late 70s I became friends with Mr Bob Wallace of Little Rock. I used to ride over there to see him. He told me about you. I had Bulldogs myself. I had Carver bred dogs mostly. I also had one of your books. Nice to hear from you sir.
I've never had a purebred pitbull terrier but I'm on my 3rd pit mix and I can say without a doubt they've been the best dogs I've ever had. They've been SO loving, loyal and protective on the rare occasion when it was necessary. They're definitely not a dog for a timid "hands off" owner who isn't willing and/or able to train them and be consistent but if you can provide them with the proper training and the means to burn off their seemingly endless amount of energy, you honestly couldn't ask for better dogs. We've been very cautious about introducing them to other animals because we know they unfortunately are predisposed to animal aggression but the one we have currently is best friends with our yorkshire terrier and 2 cats. We've always been cautious with her around them because she's so much bigger than they are(50 lbs) but other than being concerned she may hurt them from playing too rough since they're so much smaller, we've never been worried about her being around them. She's hands down the sweetest of all our pets and she even gets along well with the dogs of our friends and family when they bring them over. I hate how all "pit bull" type breeds have such a bad rap.
This old man is absolutely right in everything he said. Listen to what he has to say and believe it because it’s true. The game bred pitbull is an amazing dog and with responsible ownership and never allowing them to turn on they can be an amazing pet and friend and just a dog you absolutely fall in love with.
He makes a few leaps. Claiming lions don't know how how to fight is ridiculous they spend half their life fighting hyenas and wild dogs. The animal being baited where often deliberately injured or dosed before the show...
@@dagnut hyenas are not pitbulls, they fight different. Imagine we discover a new animal and it attacks a human, the human would have absolutely no idea what the animal is capable of, does it bite and shred? Is it venomous?? You get what I mean? So when the lions has to fight these small dogs it has no prior experience and doesn’t really know what to do etc and when it figures it out it’s usually too late. Hyenas in the other hand the lions understands what it’s up against in its dna. It’s not that the pitbulls kill a lion because of ability there’s a lot of shock factor for the lion.
Yes because they love to work and were bred to fight something just not each other. But somebodys twisted ideah of a good time said they shpild fight each other
Yeah they said that on here n' it bit 2 people- a diplomat and someone else- a president or something. He was probably educated n' the art with those dogs in it is everywhere seems like. N' maybe rich people or someone does that or did that then, but he said the rich people like them for show. You got to wonder why they ever started fighting dogs in dog fights. Sounds like they were interested to see if they could fight lions and win.
Love hearing and reading from the old bulldog people. A Bulldog or Pit Bull. I found by accident the absolute treasure these dogs are in the right hands. I spend time out in woods where we have cougars , bears Ect... and feel safe with my dogs. Perfect dog for my life style.
I never wanted a pit bull due to the stories about how dangerous they were and I didn’t want the liability. But one day my son bought one and brought it home. I fell in love with her and now I have had her almost 6 years. The best dog I ever had! I’m not her handler, she’s mine.
@@maestro4086 I've had dobermans which were very close to being the best. But they're huge dogs. So you need to run them a lot - I'm talking miles. Same with German Shephereds. Too big. Too hairy. Way too loud. Pits are a really perfect size, tough as hell and short hair. They're pretty easy to clean. And they're known as nanny dogs means they're great w your family's kids. Look up nanny dogs.
THANK YOU!!! I'm 57 yrs old, and back in 1984, I bought the last and BEST American Pit Bull Terrier I ever owned as a pup just weaned. The seller owned both of the parent dogs, and they BOTH were UKC registered & were descendants STRAIGHT out of the Colby farm/bloodline. The seller set me down at his kitchen table & opened one of Stratton's books & invited me to trace the names of some registered dogs mentioned in the book and then compare the papers of both parent dogs to the pup I was about to buy. THERE WERE SEVERAL ANCESTORS IN THOSE PAPERS, MENTIONED IN THE BOOK FROM THE COLBY FARM!!! I was blown away. I don't even know if you can get a true Colby pit bull anymore, but I sure had one. I also later on owned Mr. Stratton's first book shown in this video. IT'S ABOUT TIME SOMEONE POSTED A VIDEO OF TRUTH. I didn't even know Richard Stratton was still alive. And I can't wait to shove this video ( and the historical facts it contains) down the throats of a bunch of punks who don't know crap about the TRUE American Pit Bull Terrier.......but only THINK they do.
Maaaan a Colby dog??? Nice.... haven't seen a true Colby dog in person to this day, and man thats awesome u got to be around them. And yes punks have ruined this breed. Blame the media too.... i see stuff on TV the media tells the public. How dog fighters let their APBT kill dogs and use them as "bait" dogs, starve them, make them vicious so they can be better fighters. Now u got idiots doing stuff like that thinking its cool. Now im not saying i agree with dog fighting, but as a fan of the APBT i have read about dog fighting, and dog man like Don Mayfield and Maurice Carver. No dog fighter wanted their dog to fight poodles or chihuahas because that woudl teach them bad habits. How would letting ur APBT kill little dogs make it fight better against another APBT??? APBT were known for endurance so how would starving ur dog help it. How would a dog that was some psycho agressive mindless kill be able to be around trainers, handlers ect??? Makes no sense at all. Now people like make their APBT mean, thinking is cool to be agressive, and its not. Id rather have a APBT that is great around people and not have to worry about it around friends and family. Or if by some accident it gets loose (it happens no matter what dog breed u have) and not have to worry about a law suit.
@@209Richsta Thanks for the kind words. I never mentioned the colors & how beautiful Dino was. He was a dark chocolate brindle with gold tiger stripes on white.......meaning he had a perfect brindle "burglar's mask" with a white muzzle & black nose, ears & head were brindle, along with a brindle "cape" that covered his entire back, neck, shoulders, rump, sides & all 4 legs most of the way down. The underneath side of his lower jaw, neck and entire belly was snow white, plus all 4 feet up about 5 inches each looked just like he stepped in a tub full of white paint & then stepped back out. The white was the exact same "height" above each foot. The tip of his tail going up 4 inches was snow white too. Man, he was drop dead gorgeous standing on a green lawn. Wish I had a dollar, for everyone that commented on how beautiful he was. I forgot to mention my 2 older step sons as well, ages 9 and 6 when my oldest son was born, and them and all their friends, basically every kid in the neighborhood, would run all over the place with Dino with them. Looked like a scene straight out of the little rascals. There wasn't a single parent or any adult for that matter, who took issue with our dog, they all liked him. Never had an issue with him about aggression. See my other comment below if ya haven't already, about some of the cool & funny things he used to do.
I've just recently inherited a pit bull and I'm trying to learn as much as I can about the breed. He is such a sweetheart and I want to learn how to train him properly and show the naysayers that these dogs can be great dogs. I will be watching every video by this man and Bully TV. I'm a cat person but slowly turning into a cat/dog person.
I could listen Mr. Stratton stories all day long. He reminds of another great dogman Louis B. Colby who I was luck to become friends with and lived only a half hour away from me. I still stop by from time to time to see his dogs but it’s not the same without Lou. The late Louis B. Colby was probably the friendliest dogman I was lucky to meet. He would show us around his yard tell us who each dog was off of and then would take us in his barn where he kept all his pups. Then off to the right he had quite a few gamecocks, but the best was when he would invite us into his home and we would talk dogs for hours and the stories he had about growing up with these great dogs and the people who would come there, it was such a pleasure listening to his stories and I’ll never forget the famous door he had in his barn but that’s a whole story in itself. I offered to buy it but he just laughed and continued on. R.I.P. Richard F. Stratton 6/24/2008 & R.I.P. Louis B. Colby 7/10/2011 “Both legends of the A.P.B.T.”
Why do you say RIP to Richard Stratton when he didn't die yet??? This video was filmed in 2017, long after the 2008 date you put for his death... just ridiculous
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge Sir. I really appreciate it. We're probably going to adopt an amstaf and pit bull mix pup (or so it is said at the shelter) and now I understand so much more about the history of the dog, even if it's not pure breed.
+cat fight Yeah, Stratton is the man. Very knowledgable person who has helped many understand these awesome dogs. But why'd you put game in quotes? lol
Thank you for this interview. Richard Stratton and his books were foundational to me as young man and it fueled my love for the Classic American Pit Bull Terrier and other gladiator breeds. This was a real treat.
As a child I first see this book in a pet store in England and was hooked and being in England and in the 80/s pits wasn't available so my mum got me a Staffordshire bull terrier called max and he was awesome he'd face a lion this gorgeous dog set me up for a life of loving bull breeds and in the 90/s got my first Pitbull and wow there's nothing like them in the canine world just so,so awesome in every way ..what a breed..
i remember when i first got his first book i was a teen and he made the breed come alive to me. The stories in those books had me hooked then i got the second one. Since then i lended the books and never got them back now im looking again.
Thanks for being so informative! So many of the younger hosts spend their time talking about their own lives. You were full of anecdotes and I am glad that we got this piece of history on the record.
"They need special ownership" "Not everyone should have them".... And you have Shelters/Rescues dishing them out like candy telling prospective families "would be great for dog park", etc.
+karunald Well, to be fair, most of those dogs aren't even AmPit Bulls. The vast majority of the dogs in shelters and rescues are labeled as Pit Bulls, but are actually other breeds and mixed dogs that may classify under the Bull breed category because of certain physical characteristics.
***** You have to know your dog. There are Pit Bulls that are taken to and do well at dog parks. Though this is not the type of dog that, if you had to generalize, would do well in a place like a dog park, there are those that do well at them. I'm not saying people should go out and just take their Pit Bulls to the dog park. Just know your dog. If they do not generally get along with other dogs, then they probably would not do well at a dog park. If people aren't sure, they could always test it out by taking their dog with a muzzle on and seeing if their dog tries to go after or get into a fight with other dogs.
Muzzles are so underused in this Country and the stigma against them needs to go away. They can be a wonderful thing for a dog. But as a rule, Pits shouldn't be at the damn dog park. And I don't think it's a matter of knowing the dog. They can go from 0 to 100 with no warning, for no reason. It's mostly a matter of 'when'.
karunald Not exactly. Like the guy in this video says, not all will fight and there are some that get along well with other dogs. For the most part, supervision is the key. It is not irresponsible for a person, especially someone that knows their dog, to have their Pit Bull around other animals when supervised. It is irresponsible, however, to leave them around other animals unsupervised. Because it is not really about when it happens, it's if. Even if a Pit Bull is good around other animals, if another dog or something attacks them or starts a fight with them, it will usually not end like it would end with other dogs. The Pit Bull does not give up and sees a task through to the end. That is its resilience/determination or gameness. They might not start it, but they will make sure it is finished one way or the other. Usually this would mean bad injury or death to one, the other, or both dogs.
I hope that this video goes viral. There are a lot of people that desperately need to watch this and actually learn something about the AmPit Bull breed. Too much lack of education, misinformation, and just plain stupidity. Thanks Dogumentary TV for letting people know the truth of this incredible breed of dog. I wanted to talk about his definition of gameness though, because I feel that it could confuse people and give them the wrong idea. I know that is this individual's definition, and that he is referring to a specific use for gameness, but that is not all that gameness is. Gameness is the trait of having the intense desire to accept any challenge and to succeed at a task. Basically, it means the trait of not giving up. In a fight, gameness would be not giving up or losing interest in a fight, but gameness really means a dog that never gives up and always tries. Even if a game dog cannot do something, the dog will still try and try long after a normal dog would have just quit. If people talk about only one aspect of gameness, it might get people thinking that only fighting is the way to test, show, and breed for gameness. That is not true. Even before fighting, gameness was a thing, and the AmPit Bull was game long before it started being used to fight against other dogs. This guy practically said that in this video when he talked about how they have been used for hog hunting and catching bulls. Because if it is true that the AmPit Bull is the original Bulldog, then that would mean that they were game tested in things like farm work and hunting large, wild animals as well as things like bull baiting long before dog fighting. There are sports like tug-of-war and weight pulling. Yes, things like weight pulling are game tests also.
Thanks for explanation. As a non native english speaker I didn´t really understood what he meant. I only thought it would have something to do with dog fighting. Glad I was wrong and thanks again =)
+Sneakypi You're welcome. Glad you better understand. I'm glad it is not only something to do with dog fighting as well. It would be ashame if gameness could only be tested and produced through something that is mostly illegal and seen as morally conflicting. But no, gameness is something that can be tested and produced in different things that are legal and seen as good and/or useful. Things like hunting and dog sports like tug of war.
Amazing video I have American Staffordshire terrier but both these breeds are the most loyal dog's ever and tough as nails I love em I'll never own another dog besides a bully breed
Very informative. I've never owned a Pit Bull but have been a dog enthusiast all my life and a dog owner for much of my life. From what I've seen, I think that Pit Bulls, more than most other breeds, are what you make of them. If they fall into the wrong hands and are encouraged to become aggressive, that's what they will become. But if brought up to be good canine citizens, they are quite tractable and I have seen dozens of well-behaved Pit Bulls at various dog parks where I've taken my own dogs. My present canine companion is a large male Rhodesian Ridgeback. One of his regular canine pals at dog park is a large male Pit Bull and they get along just fine. When Pit Bulls go bad I suspect that it is pretty close to 100% the fault of the human handler.
you are correct. its all up to the owner. they are kinda like people. if you keep treating a person wrong you will get a reaction just like if you treat any type of dog wrong soon or later you will get a reaction
Did you watch this video? He destroyed all the pit pusher propaganda about "its all how you raise them." That's the exact opposite of what he said. He said 50% of today's poorly-bred pits will probably attack other animals. And that's exactly what's occurring now... Regular idiots are owning high-prey pits as pets, without the slightest clue of how dangerous they can be. They see those stupid rescue shows on TV and just decide to get one. It's creating a huge problem. The guy in the video was right, only the best (most experienced) people should own such powerful dogs.
The only dogs I’ve ever had in my adult life have been APBT’s. They’re the best, and I wouldn’t trade my girls for anything. I’m actually getting another puppy next week. That’ll be 3 in my house😂 I love them.
My apbt is far and away the most loving, loyal, eager to please dog I've ever had. He follows me to the bathroom and waits outside. He is respectful to me and I've trained him to be submissive and respectful to my other dog. I think it's so important for people to understand that these dogs have a powerful instinct that must always be respected and controlled. If you are willing to make the effort they pay it back in spades.
@@drebodollaz3504 you are wrong bro. I raised my apbt and American bulldog since puppies and they get along pretty well. They don't like any other animals though.
Oh man, I finally get to see one of my Idol's...I have all his book's, I got into the American Pit Bull Terrier back in the 70's, and since than I went and tried a bunch of other different breeds for Personal Protection, Malinois, Dutch Shepherd, American Bulldog, Fila, etc...and now it's 2021, and so I went back to the American Pit Bull Terrier, using her for Personal Protection...I'm in shock, lol seeing Mr. Richard Stratton on here!...oh my!
As a breeder this man is a one of the best of anyone to learn ur pitt facts from. I recently had a lil arguement on topbuzz about someone saying they are not real pitts unless they came from england. An well so Noooooooot true. I told him. Some of the 1st bloodlines heal from the shores of irland iv even bought a import from germany. This man an kolby he speaks of i grew up reading the books an listenimg to my father an grandfather talk about. My grandfather new Mr. Stratton personaly he is the reason my family began breeding. Awsome man. Knows his breeds an is a icon to tru breeders
Without a doubt am a proud owner of past and recent pitbull terriers ,a BREED APART.. great video, very informative and a great look into the history, myth and reality of the breed...keep the breed alive not for 1,000 years but until there's life ..
Just an outstanding video Zeke. Im a breeder as you know but Im a student of dogs and breeding for life and I was intrigued to learn more about other breeds, history and the though process behind what they have done as well as the evolution of the Bully breed. Great informative video, indepth and well done. You do great work brother.

The history and classification of pit bulls has always been sort of muddled and difficult to find definitive info on. Though I'm not an expert on the breed.. this to date is the best video I've seen on the subject. Great job- keep em coming!!
guys, thank you so much for your work and for interviewing such a legend. Also, great work by the Brazilian cynophilist Jairo Teixeira for mentioning the interview in his channel and even adding subtitles in portuguese for the very large group of Pit Bull enthusiasts here in Brazil and Portugal. Thumbs Up!
Your books have been legendary Mr.Stratton!!!!! "This is The American Pit Bull Terrier" was classic. I got my hands on it in 2006-2007 and it changed my entire outlook on the breed. My hat is off to you, without you this breed wouldn't be in existence!!!!!! The American Pit Bull Terrier (A.P.B.T.) Purify our breed!!!!! Thank you sooo much!!!!! You are keeping farms and kennels alive with your Pure breeds and you have a strong following in Appalachia and Eastern Ohio!!!!!! One Love
I’ve always heard pit bulls are dangerous, but every dog I’ve met that looks like a “pit bull” has been goofy, hyper, and playful. Their owners told me that if I played with them I should let them win because they’d keep going until they won. Certainly sounds like what this dude is talking about.
If I'm not mistaken didn't that man write the book " The American Pit Bull Terrier ". I bought my first APBT in 1983 based on that book and the pedigree I wanted. Old school ties going all the way back to dogs like Wise's Sister Sue and to " Barney " to recall a couple. He was an awesome 60# game, blue ribbon brindle dog I used for my constant companion. No fighting. 15 years by my side. In the woods, on the street, herding cattle, in the truck, everywhere I went.
Similar story. My father had a large German Shepard, an awesome lady! Beautiful dog, great demeanor, and of course, Queen of her territory. At the time my first Pibble rescue was about 65-70lbs, was always gentle and sweet, but most definitely, QUEEN of her domain. Well the first time the two met, the Shepard of course went to exert dominance, and to this day, I have never saw such a large dog put on their back and whimpering so quickly. Don't get me wrong it sucked, but it was super quick and my Pibble did not hurt her even a little (except her pride of course). This happened a few times with unleashed dogs rushing her, and it always ended the same, but not once did she EVER hurt the other dog. She was raised lovingly, she loved our babies like her own, and would have laid down her life for one of her pack in an instant. I miss her so much. Gonna go cry now for a bit :)
Richard is a walking talking book of knowledge on bulldogs and a all round nice person that’s committed his life too the apbt and to bring factual information about the breed. I was hoping he’d talk about people breeding bulldogs with patterdales. 😂
MISTER STRATTON IS THE KING FOR PIT DOGS HISTORY!!! I HAVE HIS LATEST BOOK IN GERMAN, BACK AT 95'! I GOT MY FIRST PIT BULL GIRL IN 96! FROM YUGOSLAVIA.SHE WAS ONLY 10 WEEKS OLD WHEN I TOK HER WITH ME TO ZÜRICH, SWITZERLAND!! SHE WAS A REAL PIT DOG!!! THE BREED WAS OG FROM ENGLAND, FORBIDEN AT 91 !!! There was someone that said that Stratton loves dog fighting, so they would not listen to a word Stratton says. Actually, he said that he was not necessarily an advocate for it in this video, so I don't know what that person is talking about. But even if this expert is on the side of dog fighting (I would not say he loves it. Love would be too strong a word to use), this person won't listen to anything Stratton says? I mean I do not agree with his definition of gameness. Gameness is not simply the trait of not loosing interest in a fight regardless of how the dog is doing. Gameness is the intense desire to participate or accept any activity and have the mindset to continue on despite the challenge and even when physical limits have been met. Yes, what he said is what gameness means in fighting, but I still understand that gameness, like dog fighting, is open for interpretation with people who are both on the side of and against it. Other than that, what he says is pretty much common knowledge. These dogs are no doubt the most resilient, determined, and willing. In other words - the toughest. That is the main reason they are so frequently used for very challenging and competitive things such as fighting and weight pulling. It is clear that the person that said he would not listen to Stratton does not like AmPit Bulls and other similar Bull breeds, and that's fine, but they should not just ignore/write off the facts just because they don't like something or don't agree with an activity the expert agrees with.
You Tuber I'm not trying to argue-I respect your opinion, but I disagree. I feel like why your describing is more closely related to prey drive. Gameness is jus that-GAME.
Lovememore Hurtmewhy Not really. Prey drive is more the desire to go after something, especially smaller things that run. Gameness is the intense desire to participate or do something and continue to do something despite the difficulty or physical/mental strain the activity or challenge gives. While a dog with high prey drive would like to chase after something and have high energy, it is not necessarily going to be a good weight pulling dog, fighting dog, or butchers dog for bringing down angry bulls and will continue working even when the going gets rough or even dangerous. How is having the intense desire to participate or accept any activity (like a fight or pulling weight) and having the mindset to continue on despite the challenge and even when physical limits have been met prey drive and not gameness?
+Donovan Hunt Yeah, but then again there is another video of another expert that is just as knowledgeable and respected as him that says something more along the lines of what I said. Actually, that is where I got it from. Also, he did say the trait of not losing interest in a fight. I know that the AmPit Bull was made for basically fighting other animals, but some of the things they were used for to fight animals weren't really considered fights. Like hunting. Even though they were used for hunting first like he talks about when he talks about the old artwork from centuries ago, they still fought against the animals they hunted. Even though they fought the animal, we call it hunting.
Legendary. That man is the goat and the man who put all this together and filmed it and what not or everyone involved just literally made a little piece of history God bless everyone Involved and watching this
probably the best insightful dog video I have seen for sure. What an education so much wisdom displayed from this gentleman. Love and respect from Staffordshire. Thank you bully badass
adding this to my faves Sir. Trying to keep my Corso exclusive here in the UK I cannot agree more with the gent in the video of the welfare of the dog v a fashion accessory. Any idiot asks me what my dogs are I resort to tell them they are crossed. I would have a pitt in a heartbeat if it was not for the discrimination and the ban here. Even Corso is not recognised here, which maybe good for the breed. I payed top dollar for my lines and it pisses me off people selling them on craigslist/gumtree for a fraction of the price. Unsuspecting owners then realise their mistake when the dogs fall apart. I 💯 agree, breeds need a great owner. More vetting needs to take place to insure responsible owners and go to hell the owners who dilute lines for a cheap buck. God Bless
I owned a 38lb. Female whose sire was out of New Mexico. I resided in Phoenix,Az. at 13years old. She was great with anything as long as it was not another DOG itching for a scrap. The sire was PETY
Just found out our mix is 41% American Pit Bull. So I’m really diving into the breed now (she’s amazing in every way and crossed with many other breeds including 3 livestock guardian breeds, German Shepherd, Boxer etc). I’ve been into dogs my whole life and I’ve never fully delved into this breed although I’ve always liked them. Excited to get here involved in different activities. To anyone who has this breed, what are some activities that you would try/ do with them?
Hunting is a good, historic activity. AmPit Bulls tend to have very high prey drive. Most use them for hog hunting, but they can hunt all manner of animals big and small. They can catch raccoons, armadillos, and even muskrats and regular rats. Weight pulling is another popular thing people use them for. For things you can do at home, tug-of-war and springpole are two great choices.
This guy is the man ... his book is til this day the only pit bull dog book I’ve ever needed..world of the apbt...like the bulldog bible. Thank you mr Stratton for saying it simply how it is.
“The tragedy of this breed is that they often attract irresponsible people”
This couldn’t have been spoken any better...
Not only this breed, it's mostly same for all the powerfull breeds
The best documentary I've seen on the breed. Thank you, Mr. Dickson, for the production and thank you Mr. Stratton for the education.
Read his books
This has to be the most factual and educational video on the breed I have came across to date

'Conformation show' ? His books are full of statements where he blames such show for the ruination of dog breeds.
The dog.

AWESOME VIDEO MR STRATTON 👍
I purchased my first ADBA papered pure red back in 1985 and like you said, nobody had a clue what type of dog it was .

I have a red nose, English mastiff, dogo argentino & she's a honey. Very loyal affectionate & a great watch dog.❤

Well, to be fair, most of those dogs aren't even AmPit Bulls. The vast majority of the dogs in shelters and rescues are labeled as Pit Bulls, but are actually other breeds and mixed dogs that may classify under the Bull breed category because of certain physical characteristics.

+Sneakypi
You're welcome.
People have always enjoyed watching animals fight they have been fought for as long as people have owned dogs
Amazing video I have American Staffordshire terrier but both these breeds are the most loyal dog's ever and tough as nails I love em I'll never own another dog besides a bully breed
This video is just gold, thank u for the effort
I could listen to this man for hours
Please do another interview with this man! I enjoyed this throughly!
You have to read his books!!!
This video is full of valuable information for anyone who owns a pit bull Good Job
I had his first book. Our first Amer Pit Bull was in 1976, her name was Solo. Red brindle, white chest, white socks and a red nose.
Mr. Stratton is a national treasure in the world of game APBT. What a great source of knowledge. Thank u sir. Good interview Zeke
When Pit Bulls go bad I suspect that it is pretty close to 100% the fault of the human handler.
game pits are not large
you are correct. its all up to the owner. they are kinda like people. if you keep treating a person wrong you will get a reaction just like if you treat any type of dog wrong soon or later you will get a reaction
+Yarumalito Sangre some the males were kinda large many of them but ide say like half were
Which ignores Genetics
What kind do you got and what bloodline looking for one myself but I don’t want a staffy or bully
I have 2 and will be moving so i can get 1 or 2 more..😂😂😂The Good Life is Puppies in the house.
I have 2 males and one female as well, best dogs ever!!
Christina Hampton my mom has one she’s most loyal dog my mom has ever had I love pit bulls
That isn’t a real pbt if he is submissive to another dog. They want to dominate life or death
@@drebodollaz3504 that's a myth, bullteriers and staffs are like that not pitbulls
@@drebodollaz3504 you are wrong bro. I raised my apbt and American bulldog since puppies and they get along pretty well. They don't like any other animals though.
Maddison Pharis no that’s completely incorrect staffy bulls and bull terriers are show dogs. Pit bulls are pit dogs
I just lost my pitbull terrier Krew... I wish I crossed this sooner I never knew... I only knew so little ... I miss my best friend. Thank you.
1:04 I've owned that book for at least 15 years. What a read with fantastic illustrations and historical stories.
Can do anything any other dog can do and whip em too! Facts. This is why u gotta love the breed

I love your channel! I appreciate this video and great info ty Mr Stratton
The best interview. Thanks man, good job
The books are better.
This is an amazing video. I owned and read all his books, when I was young.
This is very down to earh unbiased advice. Thanks for the info. Keep it up!
Bought at least 3 of his books, first time I hear his voice!!
Royalty, he is
This video is great! It just so happens I'm adopting two Pit Bull pups today.
I hope that this video goes viral. There are a lot of people that desperately need to watch this and actually learn something about the AmPit Bull breed. Too much lack of education, misinformation, and just plain stupidity. Thanks Dogumentary TV.
The history and classification of pit bulls has always been sort of muddled and difficult to find definitive info on. Though I'm not an expert on the breed.. this to date is the best video I've seen on the subject. Great job- keep em coming!!
No such thing as a "breed" of dog. Only types. If you're thinking outside of work, you're messing up.
guys, thank you so much for your work and for interviewing such a legend. Also, great work by the Brazilian cynophilist Jairo Teixeira for mentioning the interview in his channel and even adding subtitles in portuguese for the very large group of Pit Bull enthusiasts here in Brazil and Portugal. Thumbs Up!
This man! Hats off to you, Sir Stratton. Thank you for informing the masses.
Great Job Zeke you out did your self with this one !
In the woods, on the street, herding cattle, in the truck, everywhere I went.
that is the best apbt documentry ive ever watched
♥️🕊
They herd not ard 😂😂😂
What the fuck is a pibble
Richard is a walking talking book of knowledge on bulldogs and a all round nice person that’s committed his life too the apbt and to bring factual information about the breed. I was hoping he’d talk about people breeding bulldogs with patterdales. 😂
That interview made my life thanks so much
Congratulations to you on your interview and awesome video. I've read all of his books on the pit bull and I'm glad you made this TH-cam vid

You Tuber this guy on the video knows more than you if he says that is game then that is game Mr know it all
+Donovan Hunt
Yeah, but then again there is another video of another expert that is just as knowledgeable and respected as him that says something more along the lines of what I said.

Watch a video called "DIANE JESSUP WORKING AMERICAN PIT BULL TERRIER" for another expert's definition on gameness.
They didn’t call him nails for nothing
Legendary. That man is the goat and the man who put all this together and filmed it and what not or everyone involved just literally made a little piece of history God bless everyone Involved and watching this
Yep, this is an amazing piece of dog breed history. Well said
probably the best insightful dog video I have seen for sure. What an education so much wisdom displayed from this gentleman. Love and respect from Staffordshire. Thank you bully badass
+eezeegeezaa please share the video. I look all over TH-cam and I see the worst videos with millions of views. We need to push this to the top!!!
adding this to my faves Sir.
Best Dog I ever had APBT
Excellent vide from a legendary author of this breed. I still own his first book from my tenage year's.
I was a little confused and now I’m even further confused 😭 this man has vast knowledge
Emiliano Landa What are you confused about? Maybe I could help.
