Idk if you read these but thanks for these guides dude. You're helping me get better and inspiring me to improve a little each day. Btw I went to Chillán during the summer to visit my fiancée and I was so shocked to learn that you were from there. Poggers.
Hey zero you probably won't see this but if you want to keep doing these tutorial/guide videos, one idea I saw an overwatch youtuber do a while ago is let people submit videos of their matches and you watch it and review what they did wrong/what they could do better.
Zero proceeds to demolish all other non-pro TH-camr videos trying to teach Smash edge guarding by coming out with a more advanced concept ledge trapping. He is the most interesting Man in the.. I mean best Smash 4 player
This is probably the most useful Ultimate guide you have done yet. My old ledge guarding method was just waiting for them to come up [unless I could attack]. This makes way more sense.
A no nonsense guide that just taught me the thing I wanted to see and very well too. Seeing options broken down and the whole "options" concept applied to a real scenario has definitely helped me begin to understand this game better. So, thank you.
Zero, regarding Lucina's neutral B getup on shields; you could release the shield as it's about to hit to perfect parry, or get hit by the move if released too early. It doesn't necessarily have to be a big punish.
@@captainnwalps6689 I highly doubt it. Due to a lot of attacks having high shield damage, learning the technique that can mitigate shield damage is invaluable. There's no way they _aren't_ learning to parry.
If your good at parrying, you can use the shield method vs a lot more players. Shield breaker can be parried, and if you do that, it leaves marth/lucina wide, wide open.
As someone who has always over-relied on Jumping and smash attacks for offensive options, I've been struggling with punishing people getting up from ledges in Ultimate. It's kind of a nice to have a simple video point out that "Yes, there are other simple options, such as just waiting and shielding, that will work better." Appreciated, man.
This is your best guide yet. This is one thing I've been struggling with understanding, even though I sorta understood the concept I didn't really get "how" to ledge trap. I think I have a good grasp of it now, so this is pretty great.
So, a note on doing this with Incineroar, the generally ideal option to punish ledge rolls is a back throw. It starts killing around 90 by itself, and if the opponent has a recovery you can exploit with Revenge, it works even earlier.

Izaw is great at complete guides and tech found out by multiple people who help him (he has the best editing no contest). Beefy Smash Dudes are great at concepts, testing advance tech, and showing every character in certain situations (like seeing which character can be hit by this or do this tech skill). Zero is great at explaining concepts that would be useful in the competitive scene (since he’s proven to master each concept he explains in real time) as well as viewing characters in the competitive eye since he was best at a game that was closest to this game. Leffen gives more of a view from a player who understands fighting games, he really gives some insight into into looking at this game more objectively (watch his Tweek/Dabuz analysis, there’s some golden nuggets in that if you’re trying to understand how this game is supposed to be played). Dabuz is great for understanding option coverage and very specific interactions the best, has notes on everyone he analyzes). Nario is just entertaining to watch him casually dominate ppl haha. You can literally learn everything you would need to know (outside of some characters that they don’t cover). And if mysmashcorner comes back, he’s is like izaw and beefy smash dudes but also features top players in character guides. It’s awesome all of these guys can do this pretty much full time, that’s not always been true
ZeRo, thank you a lot for this video. I’m really trying my best to improve as much as I can and this one opened my eyes to how much easier it can be by shielding and reacting. I’ve been putting way to much effort into guess work when I was able to react to it consistently. Thank you for all this educational content, it means a lot and is doing wonders
You might accidentally fall in love with the game and try a locals. Get 0-2’d and either play red dead or keep coming back to learn more and make friends. That’s usually how it works.
Something that ZeRo didn't mention in this video, is that if you are playing a character with a counter, and you read a getup attack or a double-jump aerial, you can counter at the edge and it can easily kill them if they are at high %'s.
A move I have been messing around with (Inkling) is to jump on ledge right after them (super tight window, spent 5 hours in training to get it consistent enough to make it worthwhile) and when they r thrown off jump and spike. If they've seen it before, force them into the situation using the gun to waste their jump and a bomb to take away the options of getting on without grabbing the ledge or hesitate to throw off the timing. Its nice to use sparingly as its quite risky, but nice to make a comeback on a low % opponent. Its kind of like a trick play in football when down and u need a big play.
I struggle at this with most characters but with Brawler a well placed shotput covers pretty much every option including waiting on the ledge. You can also just get walled out by a dozen shotputs if you get caught by them offstage. That move can be really annoying if you have a bad recovery.. Good Belmont players can also just murder you with axes but they don't have the bounce and are easier to get under. But then there's usually the Holy Water in your way. Oh and Wolf's upsmash is really good for catching most options from the ledge if you miss or can't get the 2-frame. That move has really silly range and does a lot of damage. Also a pretty good combo ender.
It's important to say that every strategy has its pros and cons... In the case of ledgetrapping close to the ledge with your shield on, apart from the punish shown with shield breaking, there is another punish even more basic: normal get up to grab. You really have to be aware of the most of the posibilities and... well, this is when the mind games begin.
So it turns out this guide was for something I've naturally been doing already, just less successfully than ZeRo, and didn't know there was a special term for it. Video did give me some ideas to improve though!
I'm loving the comment sections on these videos 😂 so much love towards Zero. On a side note, how much lifting do I need to do to get Chrom's delts and triceps, I mean dang, they crazy
Really enjoy these videos you make. Thanks for putting in the work on these. Much appreciated. Quick question: What's more ideal? Ledgetrapper or edgeguarding? Is it a general rule to edgeguard if they are high percentage and ledgeguard if they are at low percentage? Does it just depend on your character's strengths? Thanks!
Could you do a video on different methods of ledge recoveries? I don’t know how to do anything other than just climbing on the stage and hitting the person.
What about slower characters? Ike main here. Neutral B isn't too reliable. Opponents can hang on the ledge and wait out the attack, then use the invincible frames to get up and move in position to punish. Striking at the ledge randomly isn't too good either because of the speed of forward tilt
I can explain dor you. Lucario used to be trash at low percents because lack of damage and a threatening presence. Then they buffed his aura and base damage so that even in low percents lucario has several options and at high percents he is busted strong and can easily stay alive
@@hotsauce8780 lucario's aura was toned down a little but his base power was increased to compensated, but in terms of knockback, smash 4 lucario full aura with a full charge up smash kill a ganondorf at 0% whether in ultimate ganondorf die at 21% with a full aura powered up smash
Can you please do a video on best options for getting back to neutral if you are forced to either recover high or if your opponent hits you straight up?
Hi Zero I was wondering if you could make a guide on recovering when you're hit off the stage or more specifically getting out of disadvantage from the ledge. I have trouble getting back on stage with characters with bad/linear recoveries. I usually see pros get out of disadvantage from ledge/edgeguarding consistently (at least more than other players) I was hoping you could teach even just the concepts and all the options you have to recover. I feel like this will really help me and a lot of players that struggle to get back on stage especially with characters with bad recoveries.
ZeRo - In your introduction, you forgot to mention you were the best player in the world in the previous Smash game, _Smash Bros. for the Wii U._ I'm not being sarcastic. You should be proud of that claim.
Wait, why can you see the Mechonis on Gaur Plain? Does this mean Master Hand built the entire Mechonis just for aesthetics on that stage, or are we actually fighting on the Bionis?
Great vid, Zero! Could you make a vid on how shields work in this game? Especially shield lag and shield grab? Sometimes I can punish a shielgrab, because the grab came out to slow and sometimes I can punish it even though it was perfect. Sometimes I'm a couple feet away and still get grabbed or they dash and grab me, though the distance seemed to be too far for it. Thanks!
When to edge guard vs when to ledge trap? Some characters kind of have to ledge trap because their options are just too strong not to abuse like diddy and some characters have too good of an offstage game to ignore, like meta knight. That isn't to say that you can't do both with either of those characters, it's just that those characters make the decision between the two a lot easier. But what about with characters like chrom who's recovery is kind of weak, but can still get really early kills with edge guards because of his sheer power and ability to go further out than you might initially think and still survive due to his airspeed. Woe betides to those that have a stock disadvantage on a chrom that has you offstage since he's so fast he can basically teleport to the blast zone and delete you if he has no intention of surviving himself. Meanwhile, chrom can also ledge trap fairly effectively since his fast ground moves and oos options enable a lot of option coverage as shown in the video. Would you choose based on the opponent and character for a whole game? For example, seeing that meta knight is hard to edge guard and just ledge trapping the whole time. Or just kinda fly by the seat of your pants, ledge trapping until they assume that's just what you do before flying offstage and killing them?
I'm assuming you can also counter the waiting on ledge option with ledge trump bair? Is trumping not as good as it was in sm4sh? Also, I suppose the let go jump special attack can be beaten with a well timed parry out of shield.
thanks for this guide , this was really useful in connection to smash ultimate. but i guess whats the difference between ledge trapping and edgeguarding. i see it is nearly the same, and i think if i am in front of the edge, standing there with shield and waiting, how my opponent recovers for especially get-up attack, i allways could use like holding shield and then punishing him. its not really a new tecnique right?
I main Roy/Chrom and even tho this works for all characters it's so nice to be able to see with one of those characters. It just clicks so much easier. 😁👍
could you do a vid on escaping ledge trapping? or like the kind of mindset and mix ups to a good escape, you could mix it in with a camping vid or something~ o.O
I know it might be quite lazy, but how do I get into competitive smash? I would like to improve and start taking part in local tournaments, but I don't know where to start
ZeRo, one day (maybe probably not) we shall meet in a finals. You are my goal. Getting the win over you will mean the world to me. I'm still learning but don't let that fools you, I may possibly be the one you pass the torch to. Who knows lol thanks for making all these guides, been out of the loop for years (played a few local tournaments but honestly not much of a competition here, really wish I was demolished to learn but alas, local competitors back in the day was non-existent here.) Really hope we meet in a finals one day. Thanks once again for all the recent guides, been definitely helping me learning the basics. Once I get that down I'll be able to flourish in my own and hopefully face you at a tournament. I like to dream big, don't judge me lol
yeah but like, he didn't say anything about who he is, so he might be trash at smash for sure, im sure he didn't even do a +50 win streak at tournaments.
This is a nitpick, but can you choose chiller, less harsh music? The quality of the audio makes it hard to make your voice out sometimes with all the electric guitar & the music volume fluctuating so much. Also, don't set automatically fluctuating music if listening to the game audio isn't the focus of the video.

Also, I suppose the let go jump special attack can be beaten with a well timed parry out of shield.
yoshi's down b against ledge counters everything but roll, and it's super safe
thanks for this guide , this was really useful in connection to smash ultimate. but i guess whats the difference between ledge trapping and edgeguarding. i see it is nearly the same, and i think if i am in front of the edge, standing there with shield and waiting, how my opponent recovers for especially get-up attack, i allways could use like holding shield and then punishing him. its not really a new tecnique right?
Come back man
Spoiler alert...
Chrom VS Lucina is totally child abuse....
I main Roy/Chrom and even tho this works for all characters it's so nice to be able to see with one of those characters. It just clicks so much easier. 😁👍
This is exactly what I needed. Thanks!
That thumbnail is Animal Cruelty. Isabelle just wanted to be left alone. :D
Ganondorf uptilting to ledge trap, viable? The big blade makes spacing around him much harder now.
What K Rool neutral B vacuum? I haven’t particularly had to play against it but it looks hard to beat when you’re on the ledge.
So when u do the out of shield option are you releasing shield and attacking? Felt like it came out very fast
Remember your best player of each character series, Will you bring that to Ultimate? But of course like a good few years after the game?
could you do a vid on escaping ledge trapping?
or like the kind of mindset and mix ups to a good escape, you could mix it in with a camping vid or something~
o.O
So basically, charge f-smash and hope your opponent does a neutral get up
I know it might be quite lazy, but how do I get into competitive smash? I would like to improve and start taking part in local tournaments, but I don't know where to start
So is ledge trapping more viable than edge guarding in Smash ult? Or should we be incoporating both concepts?
Good luck with that.
Really informative video! Good work 👍🏼
Dont let this distract you from the fact that Pit's shriek's sounds like Shy Ronnie.
This is a nitpick, but can you choose chiller, less harsh music? The quality of the audio makes it hard to make your voice out sometimes with all the electric guitar & the music volume fluctuating so much. Also, don't set automatically fluctuating music if listening to the game audio isn't the focus of the video.
I’m calling the RSPCA for that thumbnail
