      @TheRainBros1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      It's actually improper DI, opposite doesn't change your DI whatsoever. it never worked that way in old smash games either. What you do is hold the direction perpendicular. Lotta people get DI wrong, cuz they don't do their HW. We have YEARS of datamining online to explain this kind of stuff. So you get hit left, best DI would be UP and angle the stick towards the top corner that you get hit towards, so left side would be UP and TOP LEFT CORNER, right side vice versa.
      You always want to be higher than the stage too when recovering for the most part, cuz it will give you MANY more options for recovery than just from below the stage.

    • @Sharkster_J

      TheM0M I’m pretty sure DI is the same as it was in 4 meaning for horizontal knockback you are supposed to push directly against it.

    Could you discuss more on how to do 2 things (I'm a smash newb for reference) 1. How do you effectively recover from hits off the map? I feel like no matter how much I jump, I cant get back on the stage. 2. How do you do those amazing "off the stage" attack combos you do throughout this video then get back on stage easily? Those 2 things i really want to know more about. These videos are awesome btw! Thank you!

    • @MaxMonado
      @MaxMonado 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well, that depends on which character you use. Some characters just have an easier time than others, so which character are you talking about?

    • @petervilla5221
      @petervilla5221 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      1. Every character has a couple of tools to help recover: jumps and up specials (some characters have more tools like extra jumps and also their other specials), but how good each option is entirely depends on the character (little mac will never go off-stage because his recovery options suck and jigglypuff is basically always floating off-stage and in the air).
      2. Whether your character can combo off-stage depends on how good they can recover after. Once you get a feel for how far you can go with your character before it becomes impossible to come back you'll start to get the hang of which attacks you can use off-stage to edgeguard.

    • @SoundZReTuRnZ

      Edgeguarding is really just practice ... pick ur main and go in training and just practice how to effectifly use ur arials ao the enemy cant get back on stage

    • @MahBoi100
      @MahBoi100 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Monado Max One good tip I can offer is to not use your jumps at the first possibility, like mashing jump when launched off the stage. It's better to save the jump until you're closer to the stage. This also gives you a better opportunity to react to your opponent, who might try to attack you while you recover.
      When it comes to your second point, it really helps to know the moveset of most of the characters, or at least the characters that are used by the people you play with. Learn the recovery options those characters, that way you can more easily predict how they will try to get back to the stage.

    Fastfalling is also helpful in sneaking in aerial attacks as you can fastfall in the middle of the animation and potentially catch your opponent off-guard.

    • @jasonjohns9907
      @jasonjohns9907 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah fastfalling Kirby can absolutely demolish entire groups of people, especially if you can space it so you fast fall pretty much on top of their head (It almost seemed like Kirby's attack has a damage drop-off after a foot or two, I was able to 40-50% some people with a single aerial just by activating it point blank with a fast fall... More testing required but worth noting that some moves definitely work better or worse based on your speed)

  • @papamilfz1565
    @papamilfz1565 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can perfect shield by normal fighting game methods as well. In Smash Ult, there are two parries: a free parry and a shieldparry.
    free parry: You can still pull up the shield on frame for an attack parry
    shieldparry: this is the one we see in the trailers and gameplay

  • @ogfuzzy8631

    One thing to add to fast falling, if you're in a tumble state and want to reach the ground as fast as possible, dont jump and fastfall. Instead throw out an aerial. This will cancel the tumble state allowing you to fastfall with a more offensive/defensive option than just trying to get away

      @@boyapollo808 b revering, footstooling and parrying are not in melee, melee has powershielding, which while similar to parrying has differences both functionally and in how you perform it. While di is most diffenetly in melee ultimate uses a different di system, in melee for survival di you hold perpendicular to stage, ultimate has the di system from smash 4 were you just hold towards the stage. So no I wouldn't say this was all in melee.

      @@q7nator847 I guess that's pretty fair to say B-turnarounds are a thing for sure, you see them with falco lasers fairly commonly, one important difference though is that in melee you can only do them in the air, where as in ultimate you can do them grounded as well.

  • @TheShadowPhoenix
    @TheShadowPhoenix 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Solid video. It’s a good start for intermediate players. The DI part is accurate since Smash 4. The best ways to DI in games prior to 4 are up and toward the stage (when hit horizontally) for survival and down and away from the opponent (when you’re breaking a combo). If you’re hit vertically, you should move towards either side. Holding the stick in the same direction you just came from will not impact your trajectory until after you have completed the knockback. I recommend checking out DI tutorials by SSBM Tutorials or Beefy Smash Doods if anyone is interested in learning more.
    Edit: Fixed DI comment as I was misinformed (see reply) and fixed channel reference name

    • @TheShadowPhoenix
      @TheShadowPhoenix 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I need to apologize for a couple mistakes here:
      1) One of the channels referenced was incorrectly called “Beefy Smash Dudes” instead of “Beefy Smash Doods” (the latter is correct
      2) DI, as discussed in the video, is mostly correct. Since Smash 4, DIing directly toward the stage when being hit horizontally is best and DIing to one side or the other is still best for vertical hits. I was misinformed about DI for Smash 4 since I did not play much of it.

    You can also do parry by pulling up your shield before the attack lands, instead of holding and then releasing the shield when the attack lands, you press shield to have it up for a small window (the timing is little bit before what you would have to do with holding your shield and then dropping it). This will have your shield drain less compared to holding your shield since the longer it is out it will deplete.

      ...you need to have your shield up before the attack lands either way, how long you hold your shield up is ultimately up to you. The main thing to take away from this is how to execute it. Releasing the shield as you are getting hit. Keyword: releasing. Your comment might misinform some folk just by the wording

    • @srobpencer
      @srobpencer 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@krlhgn Yea I see what you mean, it is misleading to say "press shield before the attack" since to land the parry it is the release of the shield at the correct time and the only point in pressing shield before the attack is to save on shield durability, not pressing shield to parry. • @petervilla5221
      @petervilla5221 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      It's extremely character dependent, but in general: jabs > tilts > smashes in terms of speed and smashes > tilts > jabs in terms of damage/knockback. Again, what moves you will be relying on depend heavily on the character you choose, so it's best to go in to practice mode with the character youre interested in using to see how their moves work. From there it is a matter of adjusting how you play to suit the playstyle of your character. (or you can try somebody else)

    • @Kuwaga-Strider
      @Kuwaga-Strider 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Jab/tilts/smashes should be used depending on the situation.
      Jabs/tilts are generally good for safe pressure while on the offensive or during the neutral game. The specific jabs/tilts are character dependent.
      Smash attacks are generally an unsafe option because of how long it takes to recover after using one. I suggest only using them when you can read an opponents pattern and know youll hit them with one.

      @Disco Puppy im running into similar stuff, need more time in the traning room with shulk to memories the attack areas of each of his attacks because i can't seem to hit people below me or above me very often because their attack area is either a tad longer than mine or reachers me from outside my attack area. For example up B is great but several times i have had someone do a N air right above me and because of the area it hits it would hit me before i hit them, thus smashing me out.
      At first this game looks like a simple party brawler but it's got tones of mechanics and things to learn/understand just like any of your fighter games like tekken and street fighter.

      practice the basics, that's the most important thing with smash. All these guys who are making tutes who never played smash before are making it seem like "learn this tech and then you win". Naw smash is a game when you can die from 2 hits. You have to learn the basics, like spacing, combo starters, combo moves, kill moves, movement speeds, etc. There's a lot to learn than just turn around side Bs and whatnot.

    Second, you DON'T have to be at peak point to fast fall, you can even wait until you are falling to fast fall.

    I believe that there was a mistake for the horizontal DI part. If there was a move that sent you flying horizontally. Holding the stick in the opposite direction shouldn't really do anything at least in the other smash games. The best angle would be holding the stick in a perpendicular direction to where you get sent flying. So if you get sent to the left, holding the stick up or down would have a bigger influence then just holding right.

    • @Sharkster_J
      @Sharkster_J 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      No the DI system for Ultimate is the same as it was in 4 where something called vectoring dominates DI when it comes to horizontal knock back. For horizontal knock back it has been tested and proven that pushing into the stage is your best bet. It also applies to a lesser extent with diagonal knock back if the horizontal component can KO. For vertical knock back however traditional DI is the way to go.
      A lot of people think that vectoring was completely removed in 4 because it initially was also present in vertical knock back as well, but was later patched out causing a lot of people to think vectoring had been removed entirely.

    I'm confused at 2:12. You said different characters have different weights so fall downwards at different fall-speeds. But weight has nothing to do with fall-speed, because the force of gravity is exactly proportional to your weight. This sounds more like air-resistence? Like how a flat piece of paper falls slower than a crumbled-up one of the same mass.

    With any type of DI you always want to hold perpendicular to the blast zone you’re headed towards! Don’t hold directly back it won’t help!

    Talking about B-Reversals, for some reason I keep doing them BY ACCIDENT! As if the stick bounced back slightly after returning it to neutral, and that was detected as a tilt. Do I have to look at my controller to calibrate it, or is it the way I handle the stick itself?

    how does perfect shielding work for ice climbers? i cant seem to get them both to not lose shield and parry. also, using joycons, is it better to use the right analog stick for smash attacks or the button inputs combined with the left analog stick?

    • @SuperDdall
      @SuperDdall 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can't answer your question about Ice Climbers but I can say that the right stick is used for whatever you prefer. I have mine set to tilts, turned stick sensitivity on high so that I could more reliably do smash attacks. Suppose it depends on whether or not you prefer quick access to smashes or tilts.

    • @XTheBlackSoulX

      llIlIlIllIllIIllI Run > walk: As you sprint, let go of the stick completely. Then, immediately hold the stick in the direction you need to walk, but don’t flick it. Otherwise you’ll simply sprint twice. “Glide” the stick, don’t flick it.

      hold stick up and a little to the right/left to walk. if tap jump is off you just be able to walk. this method can also be useful for a quick turnaround

    I’m new to some of the things in the game, haven’t played since Brawl. I’m having trouble with one thing in particular.
    Are you supposed to use smash attacks normally even if your opponent is low damage? Or do you get their damage high with other attacks and then go for a smash attack? I’ve been using wrong I believe.

    Do you change trajectory by holding perpendicularly, or is it something else in Ultimate? I'm trying to DI like I would in Melee and I'm either goofing up or something has changed because it's not working how I expect it to.

    • @turquoise6483

      ROFLOLGAMER For horizontal launches, you hold toward the stage because vectoring from Smash 4 is implemented in Ultimate and is generally more useful. For vertical launches, just hold perpendicularly like normal.

    • @turquoise6483
      @turquoise6483 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you’re thinking of SDI; SDI is where you shake the stick towards a certain direction to escape from combos or to just slightly influence your immediate trajectory. DI is where you’re launched and hold the stick in the desired direction.
