    NOTES FROM THE AUTHOR: Hi and thank you so much for watching! (Last update: Aug. - 21 - 2024)
    First of all, apologies if voice doesn't sound that good, even with Lounge's help, I'm not that good with audio mixing/recording. Now, about the video;
    01:28 This was fun! Most of it, like 90% of all this information comes from the Dragon Crest Box books. I wish I had more space to show more Sanjo sketches to be honest. The original design for Crocodine was pretty funny. If opportunity presents for future videos, I'll absolutely show more of this. Also, many thanks to Cheems who was responsible for scanning the books and the manga for this video specifically!
    19:02 The animation section was hard! Most of it, it's because it's mostly speculation based on very limited sources as well as some previous knowledge regarding the industry. I know that a lot of Sakuga folks know way more than I do, so please, feel free to use this comment section to expand upon this conversation! The more legitimate information we have, the better :D
    TV Ratings seem to be also a realistic reason for not continuing adapting animated shows. At least back then where shows under Shueisha or Kodansha's signature suddenly stopped. It makes sense for Dragon Ball in this case to not get cancelled at all. Can you imagine if they stopped adapting the show after Freeza? That would've been a huge hit in TV ratings!
    The wikipedia source with the list of "best selling manga" is OUTDATED! This is data from 2008 and it's not a trustful list anymore! Should've taken a deeper look into it :( As of 2008, then, Dai was in fact one of the best selling mangas in Japan. I have no means to know exactly how the sale numbers changed since then and particulary with the newest kanzenban edition and the 2020 anime series. Please don't use that page as an argument anymore if you happen to talk about this topic online.
    Please remember this video is not made to spread sass to those who fall for youtube misinformation. It's the complete opposite and it was made, first, to bring these misconceptions to the table, to then encourage you to join the conversation! All of these videos are made for community purposes and never to make others feel bad. At the end of the day it's a Dragon Quest thing made by fans for fans. Thanks again for watching and reading these notes :) !

  • @cloud_strife8
    @cloud_strife8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    I always give the same example about Dai and Pop: Dai is Superman, having great power at birth because of being from a powerful species, while Pop is Spiderman, an everyday guy struggling with his own problems at the same time that improves his abilities, someone that normal people can relate easier to.

    • @LanerGuy
      @LanerGuy หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hmm...
      While I can sorta get the intended sentiment, this analogy feels kinda mismatched and ill-fitting. Like, many incarnations of Clark Kent's Superman are shown needing to and going through the process of improving their abilities before they become their in-universe present-day paragon selves they typically do, which is very much true of Dai as well. And for Peter Parker, he didn't become Spider-Man because he improved his abilities; he didn't have any such "abilities" to improve before the events where he got his powers. Not to mention that functionally speaking, in their respective present days, they're both very powerful individuals irrespective to where those powers were sourced from, and I don't see how that would affect any notion of relatability in any direction for either of them.
      So I'm not sure the analogical mapping between them and Dai and Pop really works here. Again, even though I do sorta get what the sentiment of doing so was trying to do.

    I wouldn't call myself an expert when it comes to the anime industry, but I know enough about the 2020 production to say that they were an effort for the show to have a consistent level of polish. To make a comparison, there is some staff overlap between Dai and Dragon Ball Super (Dai's series director Kazuya Karasawa was a regular episode director on Super and got to board some very big set pieces on Super: Broly) and Dai's lowest points don't even match Super's.
    It certainly was a remarkable effort by the staff. One that was given a good amount of time to cook in the oven. Which is impressive for a series that ran nonstop for two years.

    Hey, I found this video on twitter. This was a very good watch, it’s not often that I see a DQ Dai video of this quality so this was a surprise! Just in addition to moves making it into games, Medroa makes it’s game debut in DQXI as a pep power localized as frizz cracker. It doesn’t look the same as Popp’s, however it later came to DQX in the 6th expansion as a coup de grace for the mage class, where it looks much more similar. Also I’m pretty sure the luminary’s splitter attacks have the same names as Avan’s attacks in the original Japanese, looking at the fandom wiki.

    I recently discovered something on my own through extensive research. The series debuted in fall of 1989, right? Well, in the second chapter, there is an appearance by a King Slime. King Slimes made their debut in Dragon Quest 4. Dragon Quest 4 didn't come out in Japan until early _1990!_ Here's what I think happened: So you know how the Pokémon series will frequently have new creatures debut in the anime well before the next game came out? I think they did the same thing here. We know Yuji Horii was involved in the manga's creation. I think he gave the mangakas the design for the King Slime to promote its debut in the upcoming game.
    EDIT: Holy shit, you actually mention that at the very end of the video. I guess that's what I get for posting only five minutes onto the video. But I really did do _extensive_ research into specific release dates of both the manga and games.

    One of the most common misinformation about Dai, at least in the Latin America and Spanish fandom, was that the Dragon Crest "Transformation" was a copy of the Super Saiyan. You know, because it was a pure heart legendary warrior whose power rise to legends due to rage... This obviously is false, as the Dragon Crest appeared almost 2 years before Goku turned Super Saiyan.
    Loved this video BTW, Dai has been my favorite Anime/Manga of all time

    • @slimeestation
      @slimeestation  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi and thank you for your comment! By transformation you mean the Ryumajin? Transformations of pure heart characters into super powerful monsters has been a common thing in battle shonen manga. A good example of that would be Devilman in the 70's and even so, with werewolves and other similar stories, this has often been a regular trope in story telling worldwide :O I'm amazed at how everything is credited to Dragon Ball in the west despite these facts haha.

      @@slimeestation The rule of thumb when it comes to Wikipedia is to check for a source cited for the information given on a particular page, then check _that_ source yourself to verify its veracity. And this way, if you need a source to cite yourself, you use _that_ source (as opposed to Wikipedia itself). And if there's no source given for a claim or information on the given Wikipedia page, then you just move on with the understanding of what a lack of a cited source on Wikipedia entails.
      This was one of the things I learned in school. Despite the more general widespread academic aversion to it, I was taught that Wikipedia often makes for a good starting point as long you understand and respect that that's all that it is: a _starting_ _point._ It should never be the deepest you go for your information gathering. As long as we remember and adhere to that, Wikipedia can be a very useful tool.

    I remember when I bough the first Dragon [Warrior] game for NES well after it's original release (I got it in the 90s) and opened the map and manual and was, like, "Hey! This looks exactly like Fly! (grew up in Mexico) so that alone had me hooked. Like everyone else I was sad to see the original anime not be completed and got very excited then the recent one was announced. Upon watching it I realized the story was VERY simple. But somehow it was still enjoyable and still ended up causing feelings in a good number of moments (e.g. every time Crocodine sacrifices himself). This series is undervalued in the west and something needs to be done about it.

    I first encountered Dragon Quest manga in the early 1990s, unaware it was based on video games. Two series stood out: "Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai" and "Dragon Quest: Emblem of Roto."
    As a nine-year-old, I gravitated towards "Dai" for its lighthearted tone and art style reminiscent of Dragon Ball. At the time, I didn't know about Akira Toriyama's involvement with Dragon Quest or its influence on the manga.
    "Emblem of Roto," in contrast, didn't resonate with me due to its darker themes. The story opens with the protagonist's parents falling to demonic possession and death, kingdoms in ruins, and sworn brothers turning evil. Subsequent chapters depicted more tragedy: the companion's brother becoming a villain, killing the protagonist's mentor-sister, and atoning for massacring his village. The disturbing image of Baramos' corpse also left a lasting impression.
    Curiously, "Roto" abruptly concluded after only six volumes in my region, ending with a battle against a possessed Sea Lord who perished alongside his Queen.
    I believe "Dai" achieves a perfect ending, arguably the best conclusion to a hero's journey I've encountered. The narrative cleverly resolves the antagonist's situation. defeat from Baran leaves Velzar trapped, relying on Killvearn's trickery to pursue his earthly ambitions. By the series' end, it's evident that Vearn far surpasses Dai in power, even with Dai's two dragon crests making him stronger than Baran ever was. Dai's victory over Vearn's Sovereign Supreme Form hinges on a stroke of luck, with his sword fortuitously lodged in Vearn's body.
    Given this context, I question the narrative value of Dai and his companions venturing into the underworld to face a significantly weaker enemy. While Velzar might have hidden abilities, such a development risks becoming tedious. The existing conclusion feels more satisfying and complete.

    For Slam Dunk I believe it was because Takehiko Inoue never really like the idea of animating the title. He felt animation at the time cannot capture what a real basketball game feels like. @crestofhonor2349 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I very much have grown tired of the argument being "budget". Budget is rarely if ever the issue for any anime. Time and pre production are always factors in how a series looks. Plus you have to consider whether the series is well liked and makes money via merchandise. GT ended because it wasn't popular, it had nothing to do with DBZ and it's movies. Those were separate productions. Time is such an important factor in animation that I wish people would know more about how important it is.
    The disastrous production of Dragon Ball Super's anime series is a huge example of that. That anime in the beginning was so rushed that it has not only some of the worst character art but animation in the series to date because of how rushed it was. The time taken between when DBZ Resurrection F and DBS air date was tiny. The series only got better later on once Toei then relaxed the series with more filler episodes with rather limited animation were produced to allow for the more action packed episodes to shine more. Artist's need time to work.
    Budget for pretty much every anime series is pretty much identical. The difference always comes down to time and who is the director involved with the series or episodes.

    • @LanerGuy
      @LanerGuy หลายเดือนก่อน

      "Budget for pretty much every anime series is pretty much identical."
      I don't see how this can be true.
      But beyond that, if I had to guess why budget is brought up a lot, it's because budget and time are intertwined concepts when it comes to the production of works of art (so shows, games, books, etcetera). Artists need to be paid for their art, for the hard work that goes into creating it. As you mentioned, making good art takes time. And that time needs to be financially and monetarily compensated. This compensation is factored from whatever budget the production of the work of art has access to. If it's a corporate production studio, it's gonna come down to what the executives of that studio corporation are willing to allot for the production of said art. If not enough money is allocated (budgeted) to that production, then that means the artists cannot be afforded the time they would need to create quality work in humane working conditions, as that time would require more money be paid to the artists. using the allocated money up faster than the production could be finished. And so we get what often happens, where the artists are grossly underpaid and simultaneously overworked and rushed, invariably leading to lower quality in the end result.
      And that's why (the lack of) budget is brought up when there's a discernable lack of quality in a given work. Time was not afforded to the work because not enough money was afforded to the work to allow for the necessary time to be afforded to the work.

    Unless the manga is significantly different than the show, Dai is definitely not based on DQ3 at all. I believe you are thinking of the earlier show, with a protagonost named Fly. I'm not certain, but I believe it's just called "Dragon Quest". 13 episodes were localized as "Dragon Warrior" (following the trend set by the games at the time) before the English version was cancelled because the localization studio failed to credit Akira Toriyama.

      Fly is the name of Dai in localization in spanish speaking areas specifically but it's the same story in manga and both anime adaptations. Dragon Quest The Legend of Hero Abel was localized in the US with only 13 episodes and remained in syndication due failure as it was broadcasted in terrible timeslots. A show will never get cancelled for not crediting the character designer in this case, or people in the staff that are irrelevant to broadcasting contracts.

      And yes, Dai was originally supposed to be a promotional work for DQ3, as the creators themselves tell in the interviews of the Dragon Crest Box, and as you can see in the initial one shots and chapters that include a parody of the hero party, several promotional monsters for DQ IV, items, spells and weapon names of DQ3, etc, but because of popularity and story flow, it turned out into it's own story. Even Horii left the supervision because it wasn't needed for what he says. All of this was specified in the video.
