The Bizarre Origin of Green Vegeta

- It's well known that Vegeta's anime debut predates his color manga appearance, resulting in a completely different color palette. But there's actually another instance of this green and orange Vegeta from a special feature in Weekly Shonen Jump. Is it possible Toei was not the progenitor of this infamous color combination?

I just assumed the planet’s lighting was effecting how Vegeta looked.
That's what I thought years ago. Then I noticed that in the anime, when Raditz is telling goku about saiyains, there are a few still shots where you see saiyans. One shot shows a bunch of saiyans, adults and children, waving goodbye to some adult and children saiyains as they're getting into pods to begin a mission. The other still image shows Raditz holding a piece of paper upto some aliens and Nappa and Vegeta are right behind Raditz and I noticed Vegeta and Nappa both had the color scheme you see when they arrive on Arlia. Vegeta had the color in this video and Nappa's armor was the same as Raditz instead of the black and yellow.
@@slthjawa5062 Wow, great catch! I totally forgot about this scene. That would push Vegeta's first appearance back from May 24th to May 3rd, which definitely stretches the likelihood of my theory.
But Nappa looked normal, so that doesn't explain it
Exactly my thought and the space pod’s red glass window light reflecting off Vegeta
@@curse5697 Nappa didn't look exactly the same either. His armor was black and brown. This theory could still explain Nappa's color change from brown to yellow.
Moral of the story: Nobody knows why/how he looks like that but at least it's a sick alt costume for video games
What are you talking about ? The answere is miscommunication and its widely known.
well yes and no they didn’t know what was the pallet so they use some promo material so they just didn’t know what to do rather than it being a miscommunication
Yeah don’t they have this alt in Fighter z?
@@Not_obligated2careYess sir, all 3 Vegeta's in that game have this color as an alt
Honestly I was always thinking that it was because of the planet's atmosphere making them look different because I didn’t really think much about it
That was always my head-canon too
I think It was radiation of a different sunlight!
That's what I thought when I first watched it as well.
Same broo
Same
Green vegita: “I AM THE PRINCE OF ALL SAIYAN RECOLOURS”
My saiyan palette prevents me from losing to the likes of you!
My hot take is that I kinda liked Vegeta's reddish hair better. Made him stand out more. It was one cool thing about seeing him hit SSJ4 in GT, seeing the reddish color come back.
In some of the video games' anime openings he had a more brownish hair colour. That was before Battle of Gods though.
@@brainwheeze6328Now only Vegito has that brownish tint.
@@brainwheeze6328 Not only did Vegeta have reddish brown hair in the Budokai game animations, but Raditz had dark blue hair too. It very much seemed like an active effort to include more detail in the characters than was available in black & white manga or the anime that had limited budget.
@@Madara8989 video games almost never prioritized the actual lore of the series all that much they're essentially their own thing all full blooded U7 Saiyans canonically are supposed to have black hair so Vegeta having reddish brown or purple hair or Raditz having blue is basically just artistic license simply put
Plus king Vegeta has that reddish/ brunette hair.. figured Vegeta got it from his father.
And that would probably explain how Trunks had purple hair LOL
I feel like him being a different color in the bug planet episodes is a nice touch to contrast how desolate and dark the place was for the most part.
Nappa's armor and Scouter are a different shade too, so you can always write it off as Vegeta's armor and usually darker brown hair being now a lighter shade due to how the light works on the different planets atmosphere.
Yeah, but this color wasn't only showed in the bug planet, but also in the first planet they showed up after hearing about the Dragon Balls and while space traveling too.
I wonder why they couldn't have just asked Akira Toriyama.
It's a lesser-known fact that in the manga industry that there's usually several middlemen between the manga's author and what actually gets printed, let alone the people involved in adapting what was printed into something else like a show, play, or even game. The most infamous of these middlemen is usually the Editor, which most famously for Toriyama on account of his several appearances as the butt of a gag was Torishima. Getting a direct line from a literal-who cell-shader at an animation studio, through their animation supervisor and/or director, into the publishing sphere, to ask Toriyama himself, is not the kind of chain that can be linked during the crunch time that anime production is infamous for. It's likely a small miracle that they were able to get an answer from the publisher at all, on top of the miracle that there just so happened to be a single colored panel of Vegeta for a powerscaling page available for reference a few weeks before the issue's release.
In fairness he was probably in severe desire of sleep after getting his 1 hour of the overall week trying to churn out ~15 pages in less than a week.
I just assumed it was always to show the "alien lighting" of the planet they were on
So did i. I'm glad so many people came to this conclusion when we watched.
In an alternative universe they probably keep the weird collor pallet like they keeped Bulma's hair as blue
Abomination ? That is by far Vegeta's best color scheme. And its not just Vegeta that was coloured differently, Nappa had the same color armor as Raditz, black and brown.
This also isn't a secret. They didn't know what Nappa and Vegeta were supposed to look like.
I used to think that Vegeta's armor was either a older color scheme or it's to show his rank
And as a side note here's my explanation for Vegeta's alternate natural hair colors the reddish brown was essentially a complete guess on Toei's part there was no official color for Vegeta's hair at the time so they went with what they thought it'd be and that same color would eventually be seen again in a couple DB media later on as a nod to the first anime appearance the exact same way they still have the original anime colors of the armor as a recolor in some of the games as for the purple perhaps it's either a nod to the purple hair of the Capsule Corp family as he's a part of it or it's just simply artistic license that they thought would look cool since it's essentially different
purple part doesn't make much as sense as your others, plus it was most likely used for highlighting, like how spider-man's orginal color scheme was red and black, but blue was added in as a coloring highlight so the black wasn't all solid, same could be said for batman's random blue color scheme in some comics too.
@@Mr._Anonymous342maybe however everytime Purple hair Vegeta is right next to Goku and the rest he's literally deliberately depicted differently from the rest they all have black hair that's highlighted normally yet Vegeta's very noticeably purple in comparison so again most likely just artistic license to make him standout
Why is it always someone's "fault" when we already know the lack of communication issues. Especially in that era pre-internet
Red head Vegeta is kinda cool though
Feels to me like a prequel/ season 0 dlc boss. Calamity Vegeta, maybe.
super saiyan god:
I chalked it up to 'space atmosphere'
Same.
Damn I just commented about that! Beat me to it 😂
When I was a kid, I assumed it had something to do with the bug planet or it's closest star just illuminating things differently than we're used to on Earth.
Turns out, they probably weren't thinking about it that hard.
It actually looks very unique. I like how they added this costume into BT3. When I was a kid I thought the planet he was on gave him that color.
i just assumed it was cause he was on a freaky planet with freaky colors that made him look freaky
how freaky tho? 👅👄
Green Vegeta: 🤨
Red Haired Vegeta: 😏
I always thought it made sense it was due to the planets atmosphere affecting its light and colors.
My headcanon was simply that they were under a different colored star, so the light they were seen in made them look different.
You'd think someone would've ask about this back then in an interview. Someone out there knows.
I always chalked up his hair color just being that way because of lighting on the bug planet/ in space. It helped me get over it lol😅
When Trunks come to his time line, Vegeta say All saiyan have black hair!
I just assumed Nappa and Vegeta stopped off somewhere and changed clothes.
Please make a video about the hair color changes of the rest of the Capsule Corp family i.e. Bulma,Trunks, and Bulla since it's basically the same sort of thing kinda with tons of misinformation thrown around they had like at least 3 natural hair colors if ya get what I mean those being purple, blue, and turquoise
I'm still not sure why they couldn't just... Ask Toriyama?
You should do these retrospectives for all the movies like how the Cooler movie could not have happened after the destruction of Namek but after the defeat of Frieza from the spirit bomb and going over timelines when the manga of trunks came out during the production of the cooler movie to better understand where each characters hypothetical power lies in all the movies
We need more games to reference this color scheme.
Just binged all your videos keep up the good work
Its honestly Toriyama's fault. "hey guys here's a new character" "what does he look like?" "I will reveal it in 2 months" "but we have to put him on the show this week!" "sucks to be you, pal"
I'm always appreciative when games include it as an alt color/costume
Good vid sir!
It’s an awesome look
The music at 3:20 really hits, any way I can listen o tht outside of here (fantastic video btw)
I always thought him looking like that had something to do with the atmosphere of the planet they were on. It had this greenish reddish mist.
Vegeta’s Hair color is a really dark brown, we can see it in moments where massive light sources cover the characters, such as when Super Perfect Cell returned or, better yet, when Goku and Vegeta fused into Vegito. Vegeta having brown hair also obviously is the reason for Vegito also having brown hair
I love that the first Sh Figuarts Vegeta got a SDCC using this color scheme
I genuinely thought his color design was that because of the climate in that planet they were oj
I always loved this color
It would make sense that behind the scenes the animators would get access to the magazine artwork before it was released publicly, using that artwork as a reference to what Vegeta's color scheme was supposed to look like.
What I'm wondering is why didn't they ask Toriyama himself what Vegeta's colors were supposed to exactly be, but I'm guessing the answer to that would be since Akira has much of a tight schedule as the animators as a mangaka, he would have no time to even answer such questions....
i always just thought it was because of the planet they were on. cuz sometimes the colours on characters in shows look different when going to different places with a complete colour change.
I thought it was the planet's peculiar lighting that made him look that way. In many anime at the time they changed tge color pallette of characters in some special scenes, like dream sequences ir ones in a dark enviroment.
That's a shiny Vegeta!
I always just assumed it was the lighting on that planet/ space
Honestly, I wish they kept Vegeta's red hair, it made him stand out more in the sea of black hair that is the majority of the Z-Fighters. Plus, his hair looks like fire so red or orange would fit
i thought it was just like, different lighting
1:I think he looks cool with red hair and 2:when I was a kid I thought it was just the lighting of the place he was in so I never thought of it as a mistake or animation color error,I still don't think of it that way
The Vegeta hair color point reminds me of Vegetto somehow having Brown hair in DBS even though Goku and Vegeta have black hair
This guy deserves more views
I preferred this version - he looks like a villain, and his odd shape and form broods high power level vibes.
So fascinating 😮
I actually liked that color scheme when i first saw it
Cover dates on magazines and comic books are typically the "keep on shelves until this date" timer as opposed to the date they were meant to be put out.
Regardless of what happened, now its iconic ❤
The best alternative color in FighterZ
Whatever the cause, at least it's meant Vegeta actually has a lore "accurate" alternate color scheme for fighting game mirror matches.
Vegeta went super Saiyan god before dbs
Vegeta's hair colour was just all foreshadowing his future powers.
I always like these more meta oriented look at db stuff.
1:45 i love the color
People also cite Toei for turning Bulma's hair color from it's manga purple to blue-green, when in reality, that's how Toriyama originally colored it. Sure, he settled on purple, but in the colored version of chapter 1, including 1 or two other illustrations, it's colored blue-green, like in the anime. That's what they used as a color reference and they decided to stick with it.
I want an Arlian Vegeta/Red Shirt Shaggy crossover event.
It annoys me how the numerous filler Saiyans they made during Namek have diverse technicolor hair. Also they invented King Vegeta out of thin air, he was just mentioned in like one line in the manga
I mean... The fact he's called "Prince Vegeta" implies that there was a king.
@@MSCDonkeyKong i think he means the design
Their hair is shown to be pretty normal. Mostly brown or black and a couple blondes. You need to find better things to be upset about.
@@slthjawa5062 There are ones with every conceivable colour; the filler is awful and you need to find better things to defend.
@@Supahdenning no, there aren't. You're a liar.
Vegeta is such a genious that he was a Dragon ball super character even in the sayan saga.
such a 'genious' indeed
The outfit vegeta has on is covered in moss
Nah is not correct the colors are picked way before the character is even drawn on a manga page, Toriyama had to design the character first and get approved, he probably changed his mind or was advised to change the color, listen ... Probably Akira wanted to color code the ranking of vegita to show he was above Raditz and Napa, what would be the color of royalty in a planet named after vegetables? .... Green... So probably early in its design stage Vegeta did have green armor. They anime and magazines went along with it because that was the original intension then either Akira changed his mind or was requested to change the color by the Editor or publisher.
Thats my favorite vegeta design
His colors remind me of the orange/green palette used for Luigi in Super Mario Bros NES.
First ever super saiyan god before he got ripped of that title and made it into a legend! XD
I alway figured the seperate of color were for two reasons. 1: Story wise, Vegeta is not only a much higher rank sayian compared to Napa and Raditz, but he's also royalty. Maybe they were implying this was the sayian royal colors. 2: Metawise it would make sense to drastically him from Napa and Raditz by giving him a completely unique color since his role is so much greater.
When it comes down to it, Vegeta's yellow and white being treated as canon always felt odder to me since we later see redesigns of Raditz and Napa implying the yellow and white was a common among ALL SAYIANS. Yet, Raditz to this day is still given his unique browns in the opening episodes of the series no matter how many times TV/Video Game retell the story. In doing it flipped the confusing narritve I established above and saying Raditz has a very important unique role, which we all know, despite how much we want him to, he doesn't
Regarding Vegeta's hair, my understanding has always been that it's dark brown, but sometimes appears black (not to be confused with the manga, which has it as black because it's in black and white) either as a corner cutting measure or just a creative decision. This is in contrast to Goku's hair, which is actually black. It seems like black is a highly common and dominant gene for hair color among Saiyans, while brown is more rare and can be considered a recessive trait. I don't know about any official examples of Saiyans having any other hair colors aside from through cross breeding, such as with Trunks who inherited his purple hair color from his mother (But confusingly doesn't represent this in the Z anime due to Bulma having blue hair. This was later fixed in the Super anime by giving him blue hair to match his mother, but even more confusingly only his future timeline variant until the Super Hero movie).
Vegeta's father, King Vegeta is also often shown to have brown hair that's much more obvious than that of the iconic Saiyan prince. This could be indicative of Saiyan hair color being more strongly decided by the genetics of their mother, though without more examples there's not really any pattern to draw observations from, and as far as I'm aware prince Vegeta's mother is never shown so for all we know she could also have had brown hair and the prince's darker shade comes from dominant genes that skipped a generation.
I always wondered why they made Vegeta green and orange in that part of the anime.
Great Video!
i hope we get this fit on sparking
I'm more and more convinced they took a troll doll as a reference
I always actually preferred it.
Here’s a made up theory - since Vegeta and Nappa are on a different planet. maybe the atmosphere impacts the planet’s light and color palette that’s coming through from the sun or star. 🤷♂️
Yeah I thought it was just a cool attention to detail
It looks kinda weird in comparison to how he normally is. But really, it ain’t even that bad. The armour comes in a variety of colours and hair changing colour in Dragon Ball is kind of trivial by now.
I like green vegeta
Toei is more obsessed with making vegeta's purple or brown
Abomination? That is drip.
Honestly though I kinda like the colors. The hair not so much but I kinda like the armor colors.
the green skin in the game is Menacing!
Ya me friend started to watch dragon ball from beginning to end and when he hit saiyan saga he was so confused and when he asked me about i told him i had no clue myself with my best guess being a false super saiyan situation.
when i was a kid and saw this episode i thought it was the lighting of the planet he was on making his hair and suit look different
I miss the old days when Vegeta had Super Saiyan God.
It's a Good thing Vegeta's Default Color Palette was eventually Fixed in the DBZ Kai Remastered Anime.
I'm not a big Dragon Ball fan, but I don't think the colours are awful. I don't think they're great, honestly they're a little bold and brash but it's a distinct and weirdly pleasing palette that when done perfectly - that is less saturated, such as how they're done in FighterZ - offers a unique and eye catching look for a Prince without being strictly ostentatious.
his hair color is black & it just changes differently then human hair. Think about it. His hair glows almost gold at some point, so is it so hard to wonder that maybe other things can change his hair color
i thought that was just "Space Vegeta"
Clearly Vegetas diet eating the sentients of the planet changed his skin 🤧
Green Vegeta? I always thought of this one as the red/orange Vegeta lol
i kinda like red head Vegeta, sure it shouldnt be his main desing at all, but as an au thing why not, maybe whit is own disting story and powers
I’d like to think it’s a sign of Royal Blood or maybe it’s just an effect from the lighting on other planets and space idk 😅
In jojo, character colors are about the feeling of the moment
But this isn't jojo
@@wreday720 maybe it is.
@@wreday720 when Goku is mad his hair turns yellow not because of super sayian but because of artist color pallet change jojolike
I kinda like it, but the Hair and the blue clothes kinda kills it, as well for the scouter being Purple insted of green or orange in such case (Suprisingly the only thing they got right). Not gonna lie the printing version looks way better.
I think I've heard that someone who worked on dbz said that Vegeta's hair is brown they just show it as purple, redish(the design's hair you've talked about) or mostly black cause of the other saiyans also have black hair.
great video, but whats the last song?
All music is my own work unless otherwise specified
@@UchihaTobito my friend, you have amazing taste in music production 😌
Why didn't they just ask Toriyama himself at that time what color vegeta is
I like that version of vegeta I hope it's in sparking zero
I actually missed that version of Vegeta
I would love to see how he would look now if they kept that look
