    For example, in Japan people are super nice and kind though I don't get that same genuine feeling.

      The Japanese will never let you know what they really think. Better not be fooled by their apparent niceness.They will eat you alive if it will serve their purpose. Koreans are much more open, genuine and warm hearted. Koreans do not carry any hidden agenda not shown to you, unlike the Japanese often do. If you are in trouble, you can turn to Koreans and they will help you out even if they are strangers without looking to something in return.

    I'm so glad you finally went to Korea, Poppy! I lived there for a short time, and I have a soft spot for Korea and its culture. I feel like (though maybe I'm wrong) in a lot of the travel content I watch on TH-cam, Korea often gets overlooked or passed over in favor of other Asian countries, like people don't know much about it except the whole North Korea thing and maybe Kpop. But really it's a beautiful country, with a very interesting history, complex culture and language, and lots of cool places to visit and things to do and see. The food is amazing too. It makes me so happy to finally see Korea videos on your channel. 정말 감사합니다!

    I'm not sure when you went, but if you went during one of their big holidays (Chuseok is the big one in the fall) then usually Korea is pretty dead. Chuseok is a family holiday where people go home to visit their families and eat meals together. I lived in Korea for a couple years, and I know Korea isn't normally as empty as it seems it was in your video so this is the only explanation that I think it could be.

    As an old Korea hand, I feel for your struggles with Romanized Korean. It's a very scientific, consistent system of rendering the Korean alphabet into Roman alphabet - and it doesn't work. The only way you can pronounce things correctly is learn how each letter or combination is supposed to be pronounced - and, guess what - it's easier and faster to learn the Korean alphabet.

      You won't know it by its appearance
      Korea actually has serious problems internally
      The left is now in power, and after they took office, Korea suffers in many places internally.
      Trade unions are South Korea's leading leftist group, and their protest are notorious and they often use violence.
      The corruption of high-level leftists is currently being revealed and is the biggest issue in Korea.

    I think, why the Koreans said "It is NOT a Protest" for the protest is matter of a term. Koreans usually say "Demo" (Demonstration) for protests. "Demo" is more used by Koreans than even a Korean word of "SeeWee" which means protest. Most of Korean Demo are very peaceful, so you don't need to be afraid.

    (Comment from S.Korea)
    Thanks for filming this video. I'm in abroad now, and this really makes me miss my hometown ;)
    The protest you took in your camera, 'is' a protest. Near Kyeongbok-Palace there is a plaza where people hold a protest, and protests are held literally everyday, by diverse parties. You don't need to be afraid of it, since it's really rare to see a violent protest., at least for tourists. People just assemble and sing&shout something, and then go back home. Police surrounds the protest just to maintain order, not to fight against them.
    About the kites at the last of your video, I checked the slogan written on them. You were in the center of another protest :)
    As you saw, protests in Korea are happening in different ways from other countries around the world. People do not lit fire, destroy something or else. They won't attack you, so just feel safe and enjoy your trip :)

    What you ate the end was Ho Dduk, typical Korean street food (Chinese-origin), basically a pancake filled usually with a ground up mixture of nut + cinnamon + brown sugar. Ready-made street food versions will be piping hot like that to get the filling very syrup-y, plus ideally a crisp to one side.... I'm salivating just writing this (they make green tea versions, which I'm more partial to).
    .... And yes, the "pumpkin" at the palace was indeed taffy, made from pumpkin (called Ho Bahk [pumpkin] Yuht [taffy]), something Koreans associate with super old school, traditional Korean culture.

    • @houseofjob
      @houseofjob 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      ogidokki lol don't be butthurt. almost everything traditional from Korea or Japan have Chinese origins. There's nothing to be butthurt about. Most Japanese people know and accept this (except for the far right ultra nationalists). Sure, they have their own variations and also their own stuff but it all originates or are inspired by the Chinese taste, aesthetic, philosophy etc from one Chinese dynasty or another. China is basically the Roman Empire that still exists today. So many cultures, food, flavors etc in the West have origins in Rome. It's the same thing. Don't be butthurt cuz you're just embarrassing yourself.

    • @momochizabuza2558
      @momochizabuza2558 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Duh, of course there are distinctions. There are even lots and lots of distinctions within China itself, regional, provincial and even unique distinctions of food, culture and language just a few km away from one Chinese village to another. It's still Chinese in origin. And please, even Korea historians have admitted that Hodduk originates from Chinese merchants that brought it to Korea in the 19th century.

      @ogidokki if you clicked my link, this is by definition in Naver, the Korean Google. So you're saying they're wrong?
      Then perhaps Korean historians detailing the evidence of 호떡's origin from the migrant Chinese workers from Hubing/후빙, setting up shops selling similarly delineated home Chinese foods is wrong as well, detailing how the ingredients evolved into the 호떡 we know today? hk.incheon.ac.kr/Webzine/webzine_view.html?id=610

  • @sooyoonkim1166
    @sooyoonkim1166 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Idk when was this filmed but looking at what people wear im assuming it was late september-ish? Thats during the college semesters and college students are the ones who really get out there; thats why you dont see a lot of people. Plus, palaces and the market are not popular places to hang out for korean college students. Go to Itaewon, Hongdae or Shinchon by night and its gonna be crowded.
    The "yeot" you ate is made of pumpkin sugar extracts or pumpkin syrup i guess. Its coated with flour so that it doesnt stick and thus making it handling a lot easier.
    The pancake is called hotteok and it contains brown sugar with a variety of seeds. As you know sugar when melted gets "caramelized" so thats why the syrup looks so dark.

    If you want to see the real Korean village, go to Gyeongju Yangdong Village. It is one of the few villages that retains its original appearance. Andong and Hadong village and Yangdong village are almost the only villages. A little interesting fact is that the countryside in Korea was mostly thatched houses (rice dried dried stems) or slate roof houses until the 70s and 80s. The rural population was much higher than the urban population. It was a long explanation.

    the protest at 9:20 is about part time / temporary workers (people who are hired on an irregular basis, such as those ) protesting about having their positions to become a permanent employees (i.e., annual salary basis). You can take pictures. It's rarely, RARELY if ever, violent.

    What you ate at Namdaemun Market is 호떡(Hotteok). It's one of the most popular snacks in Korea.
    The ingredients are flour, brown sugar, walnut and cinnamon powder.

    7:16 I can read the poem on the wall there. It is in Chinese, it says from the right "Keeping the bamboos and they become street bamboo shoots, "Loving the pine trees that they block the door", "Happy is the atmosphere that the birds talk to each other".

    I was accidentally drawn to your video and enjoyed to see my city from a different point of view! Usually locals don't go to Namdaemun Market anymore, I've been there with my foreign friend few months ago, and it is too touristically outdated in my opinion...Anyhow what's inside the thing you ate, hotteok, is brown sugar and some nuts and sesame mixed together

  • @alexjin8187
    @alexjin8187 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Quite funny a thing. The sentences on the pillars say “Planting bamboos without clipping, the bamboo shoots obstruct your way. Loving pine trees without trimming, their branches block your door. Collect different opinions conflict each other just like hear chick talking to duck.” That obviously are political methods. Ancient governor believed he should herd people like animals. AND hilariously outside this yard, people are protesting.

    Gyeongbok-gung is pronounced like: g + yuh (when you say 'yummy') + ng + bok + goong, and 'gung' means actually palace, so it's also Gyeongbok Palace. Hotteok (ho-tuck) inside is not from soy sauce, but it's just brown sugar and cinnamon and peanut maybe. Inside is very hot, so you should be careful and they should have told you and served proper dish for everyone. :(

    • @ahk1225

      @暖心公主 your statement is false and do not receive any supports from others because your statement is based on your personal perception which is china is a center of world. i have met more humble koreans than arrogent. However china becomes more arrogant since china dream policy was implemented. Also i met so many rude and unmanner chinese like you.

    It's a blessing that you got to experience all those places in the quiet.... I was there last year the first week of October and it was pretty packed then too. Yeah those are protests... Koreans have a strong sense of duty and they expect leaders to uphold their duty too. They pretty much kicked out their previous president which didn't get a lot of media coverage outside the country. Can you imagine the ideas we would get if people saw people kicking out their leaders? lol..

    Was this shot around September 12-14th? That was Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) for this year, where basically the whole country goes to the countryside and spends time with family. This is the only time of the year I've ever seen Seoul basically become a ghost town. (Love your vids BTW)

    As a people from south east asia, we really admire korean and japanese people, they both hardworking people. We can differentiate both korean and japanese.Korean speak loud voice than japanese, physically japanese smaller than koreans, koreans a little bit more competitive than japanese, japanese more conservative and koreans love striking colors for their clothes fashion and their food are much more spicier😃

    Facts from a Korean living in Seoul for 29 years
    1. Except for a pumpkin guy and members of labor unions (protesters, not sure who they are though) All shown up in the video are not Koreans but I guess Chinese.
    2. Except for the first place, Korean Traditional village, all are places Koreans barely visit but mostly only foreigners go to see.
    3. You are cool
