  • I bought the 2021 Honda Rebel 1100 DCT, and don't like it! Love my Honda Rebel 500's, but not the 1100 DCT. Here are the 5 main issues with this bike and why I hate it!
    1:19 Reason 1
    2:19 Reason 2
    3:38 Reason 3
    5:24 Reason 4
    7:35 Reason 5
    End Synopsis and Surprise!
    Windshield is a generic aftermarket from Amazon, "Slip Streamer Hellfire SS-24-C". I have happily purchased 4 of them so far, 2 for Rebel 500's and 2 for Rebel 1100's. I make nothing from this link, other than the satisfaction of providing you all information on the windshield:

    Subscribe to join the DMC (Decco Motorcycle Club) as we talk motorcycles. We have purchased the following bikes since 2019, some in multiples: Indian Chief Dark Horse, Kawasaki Ninja 650, Honda Rebel 1100 (DCT & Manual), Honda Rebel 500, Zero SR/S, Triumph Street Twin, Kawasaki Vulcan S 650, Honda CBR500R, KTM 390 Duke, and the rowdy little Honda Grom 125!

    I appreciate you opinion and thanks for sharing. I almost believed you and didn't get my DCT Rebel. I'm so glad I didn't. Picked it up this week and it's amazing. I hate manual cars and now I hate manual bikes. You should really learn how to set the DCT in the user setting to max and it'll hold the gears. Or better yet use the paddle shifters when it needs to be changed. It's a masterpiece. Long live the Honda DCT!

    I have a manual and my girlfriend has the automatic and I’ve ridden hers just to see what dct is like and hers is super smooth shifting to the point I was really impressed. You almost certainly have something wrong with yours. I would take it to the dealership and have the trans looked at because my girlfriends 1100 dct shifts like a Cadillac. I would definitely have that looked at.

      The only thing wrong with her bike is the owner. She's just been used to a manual for so long that she can't grasp something new and foreign to her. I own a 2017 Honda CTX700 with the DCT and it shifts like butter. Sure it clunks into gear and during shifts but that's just the nature of the DCT being a geared automatic over clutches found in vehicles. I think it's so sad to see bikes get bad reviews by diseased people like this just cause they can't wrap there heads around new technology.

      Came here to say this exact same thing, I worked at a local shop where we had a NC750 trade-in with a defective DCT/traction control that "clunked", previous owner got it used as/is and wanted rid of it, turns out it was was an easy fix for Honda, but we ended up taking a slight loss reselling it. It shouldn't clunk unless it's got a defective damaged clutch or traction control, thumping clunking and clicking are all the sounds those make when they're bad usually, or just wind up in D without giving you power in any setting.

    • @DanGilman
      @DanGilman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That being said, not everyone likes the DCT even when they're working perfectly. I'm a big dude and they feel scootery and I've never drove anything above the 750 but it is deceptive because every scooter I've been on I could just whip that throttle and bog it down and go, you do that on anything over a 500 even though everything in your brain is going "This is a scooter! Do the scooter rules!" and you're gonna have a bad day. lol

      I will ride it a while longer and see if the shifting gets smoother. This is my first time with a DCT, and the differences are quite noticeable to all of our group. I was standing in a parking lot yesterday when a Goldwing DCT came cruising past. The Goldwing had to have downshifted when it came in, but I couldn't hear any shifting or see any difference, which tells me it was very smooth. That's not my bike. I've had riders riding their bikes behind my Rebel 1100 DCT, and they could hear the clunky shifting and didn't like it. I'm going to look at the DCT reset. I'm sure the DCT is a positive game changer for many. Apparently, not for me.

    Manual transmissions clunk every time you shift them as well you just don't really notice it because you're using your foot to make the noise. The Honda DCT is one of the smoothest shifting transmissions in the world.
    Manual mode is there so you can shift when you want. you put it in manual mode when you're doing aggressive riding and automatic mode when you aren't.
    Regarding the snatchy throttle. Not being used to something and trying to use it in a manner that isn't designed for is not really fault of the machine. If someone has a problem because they are trying to use a clutch that isn't there that's kind of that person's problem

    • @DoRC

    Thank you for making the video. I actually love the DCT on my Rebel. I remember when the BMW M3 sports cars came out with them. It’s designed for maximum flexibility. In soft riding it’s to be effortless and extremely snappy under extreme riding. Pulling out of the corner you can adjust the shift aggressiveness in the user mode. Also if you don’t use the user mode you can manually downshift 2 gears rapidly since it’s a hydraulically controlled dual clutch and gear down rapidly to pull yourself through with the throttle. In reality the DCT is actually the future in sport riding. I frankly think it’s amazing that Honda has incorporated it in an awesome sport cruiser platform.

    I came off of a VFR800DLX because I’m tired of sport bikes, and i love my rebel 1100 DCT. The DCT is fantastic, I don’t feel “clunkiness.” my Ninja 650 and old sportster clunked way harder than this thing, the ninja was snatchier as well. it also shifts very quickly and even if its in too high of a gear it has enough torque to pull hard enough anyway, can also downshift with the paddles and its instant, maybe she has a defective model thats not shifting right? the reason she doesn’t hear much negativity is because there isn’t much, the bike is nearly perfect except the lack of factory accessories that are actually available. I would love to see honda put DCTs on more bikes.

      I'm glad you are happy with your DCTs. Either mine is needing a DCT reset, or it needs more break in time to smooth out more, or the DCT may not be for me. It really is a different way to ride vs. the Manual transmission. Was your Rebel 1100 DCT smooth shifting from the start? Or did it need a break in period? I've saw a Goldwing DCT where I couldn't tell it was shifting at all, it just did it. Sorry you are having that “clunking” between gears. I have a 2020 Goldwing DCT and a Rebel 1100 DCT and have not experienced that problem. You can’t even feel the shifting when it shifts. I think there might be something wrong with that bike. I’ve been riding for over 50 years, always with the a clutch, and did find the DCT a turn off when I initially heard about it. After riding a Gold Wing DCT I bought it and haven’t looked back. That’s why I bought this DCT Rebel 1100. You are right about the throttle being a little twitchy, especially in slow cornering, but I can deal with it using a little rear braking while slow speed turning. Also, I totally agree with your assessment about the foot pegs. The positioning sucks. Overall I like the way the bike looks and love the way it runs, especially in “Sport” mode. You better have a good hand on the bars when you twist that throttle.

    I have been driving motorcycles with a clutch for 55 years but recently had to sell my Harley due to bad arthritis in my left hand and leg - so needed to take a chance on the DCT. Love your comments and agree with all the points you raise especially how it takes time to get used to the throttle by wire and how the automatic reacts at slow speeds - you need to practice low speed maneuvering or you will dump the bike I guarantee. For erratic shifting you may just need to reset the DTC module - but I always drive in manual mode so I can control the RPM and shifting - shifting at higher RPM is very smooth and responsive. and I choose the gear going in and coming out of curves.Overall great fan of the bike. PS I removed the foot peg protectors 4 minutes after picking up the bike.

    Beginner motorcyclist. Now having Rebel 1100 DCT (2022 model) for about 4 weeks ... my first bike ever... and I absolutely love it. First 2 weeks drove in Rain mode. Then made user mode with P2, T3, EB1, D2 and still love it. In hindsight, should have made user mode with Rain mode + D2 (P1, T3, EB1, D2 (instead of D1 in Rain)) and would have been perfect newbie mode. When you feel more comfortable you can start increasing the P setting.
    1) the audible lil bit annoying clunk is only from N to 1 and maybe a little bit from 1 to 2. After that I don't even notice it. More irritating (and tbh only dislike I have about this bike) is engine breaking when it drops from 2 to 1 too early ... ughh.
    How ever your endless whine about missing clutch lever and shifter is just absurd -- it's AUTOMATIC. It's not supposed to have those. deal with it, but obviously it's too hard to teach the old dog new tricks? You should have bought manual.
    2) mmm... no? usually quite fine. Maybe should upshift a little faster (when you throttle fast)... when I "jump" from red light and go from 0 to 60 "fast" I end up being in 60 in 2nd or 3rd gear and have to manually help it along with the "flippers", otherwise it seems it will stay in the 2/3rd gear forever... other than that, it feels quite nice.
    3) no idea what you are talking about. Maybe pull throttle a little sooner in the curve so your possible throttle lag issue will be resolved when you want it? and/or it's a lot better on my 2022 model...
    4) another "ok boomer" moment. again the "no cluth lever" issue. BUY MANUAL if you don't like automatic and have 0 willingness to learn/adapt/evolve.
    pro tip ...or actually newbie tip to "old pro": when you let other boomers with clutch lever grabbing addiction, to try out your new bike with automatic, put it into Standard or even Rain mode, so they are more unlikely to end up in the situations where they want to grab the clutch?
    5) weird. never happened to me. ever. I never even lift the legs so high it could possibly go over the guard... why are you doing air squats on your bike? lol.

    I've got a NC700X with DCT (for around town) and a Kawasaki Concours C-14 for the highway. I've got enough miles on the DCT Honda to be used to it, although switching back and forth can actually be kinda dangerous if you're just daydreaming - like forgetting you have to shift the manual C-14 down and pull in the clutch when coming to a stop, or, worse, forgetting to shift into 1st at a stop and trying to take off in 3rd or 4th gear and stalling in the intersection. I bought the DCT after screwing up my left foot because it really hurt to shift. 3 years later and I can shift now OK but I'm really considering getting the Rebel 1100 DCT and selling the C-14, so I won't have to switch back and forth (getting old and forgetful).

You may be especially sensitive to the DCT shifting and getting rid of it is your best option. Or there may be a problem with your particular Rebel 1100. I'd take it back to the dealer and ask them to test ride it and look for Honda TSB's (technical service bulletins) on DCT equipped bikes for similar problems. I have trained myself to manually down shift coming out of a twisty if I need the extra power. I made a user mode setting that works very well with my riding habits. You should try that. The only clunk I ever hear is the first to second gear. Not a issue with me. It looks like you are not in a city traffic area. I’ve had a red DCT model since mid Feb, have run it for about 1500 miles and love it as well. The short gearing is an issue in Rain or Standard mode. I set up my User mode at Power 3, TC 1, EB 1, and D at 3 (difference from Sport is less engine braking…find it less ‘snatchy’ rolling of throttle) and find gear changes happen at much higher speeds. My shifts are also buttery smooth, none of the ‘clunking’ described in the video.
      It’s definitely a different experience vs. a manual transmission and if you’ve never used a DCT after long years of riding, it’s going to take some adjustment. That being said, mine is used mostly to commute around town and riding through traffic with a DCT is such a joy comparatively.

    What is urking me about this is how much she just doesnt do anything about the problems she faces. I have DCT also and I can agree that is likes to be at a higher gear, but it is just not true about the how clunky the shifting is. The gear shifting is incredibly smooth. Its so smooth that you wont even realize youre in 6th. If you dont like the power output in corners then dont have it in standard or just use manual, or set the gearing to be aggressive with lower power. It keeps revs high in sport mode the lowest in 4th is 35 mph and it is very aggressive with the shifting depending on the change of speed.
    Then says its too jumpy at starts, which is only in sport mode. Standard and rain you can feel the clutch slowly grab as you roll the throttle. Like what, why complain about something because its took snappy then also complain that its too timid?
    The foot position took me the first right to get used to. I currently have 3600 miles on mine.

    My dct doesn't make any weird noise or anything when shifting. Something is prolly wrong with it. Also sport mode constantly keeps me high up in the powerband so I don't know why she is getting stuck in 6th gear using sport mode. You can fix the touchy throttle by using the user mode and keeping everything the same as sport mode but lowering the power setting to 2. It will be less snatchy but still full power if u twist it all the way.

    The DCT takes some getting used to. I have an Africa Twin Adventure Sports with DCT and I love most everything about it. There are some good videos about riding with the DCT and how the back brake creates that friction zone you loose without the clutch. I ride a lot in drive mode which gives you the greatest gas mileage but yes in that mode you will be in too high a gear into a turn and have to use the paddle shifters to correct. However recently on one of my favorite twisty roads I tried the sport modes and what a difference. Sport mode 2 had the bike up shifting and down shifting just as I would do it with a clutch. Had a rebel 110 DCT - BEWARE
    I owned a rebel 1100 DCT for a couple of months and had a major, major problem. I had my bike service at 450 miles. On my ride home I noticed that the bike DCT transmission was engaging while I was stopped. I ignored the issue hoping that it was an one off. After riding the bike for ~200 miles the DCT transmission engaged again while I was stopped and the bike transmission/power over rode the braking system (Front and Back brakes) and took off. I tried with all of my energy to stop the bike but it wouldn't hold. I ended up crashing into a wall, broke a couple of ribs and my collar bone. I do not know if this has happened to anyone else? There is no clutch to override so BEWARE and practice hitting the kill switch!

      @mcSal  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow!!!! What a horrible experience!! Haven’t heard of this as an issue before, but thank goodness it’s not prevalent. I think if it happened to me, my first thought would be to counter and hit the brakes, like you. Then I t would take a minute to think about turning off the key, and by that time it’s too late. It all happens so fast. Sounds like the service department may owe you a new bike and more. Hope you have recovered! And glad it’s not a common issue!

    I have to disagree. I upgraded from the Rebel 500 also. But I got a 2023. Perhaps this latest generation (7th) is better. The shifting is silky smooth even in sport mode. Shifts quickly and smoothly, better than any human or at least me. Very very refined. I programmed the 4 parameters and it’s perfect for my riding. I’ve ridden bikes for 40 years, all kinds of bikes. This is the best bike I’ve ever owned and for the purists with the manual shifting and clutch, I say don’t knock it til you try it. Most today wouldn’t consider driving a manual shift car yet they won’t consider this. Go figure. Its brilliant. Just go or stop. It knows what you want when you want. My 100 pound, 5 foot girlfriend rides it with ease. It also handles as well or better than the 109 pound lighter 500, amazingly. My only niggles are no self cancelling turn signals and no exterior battery tender plug, I had to install (a 15 minute fix). Honda hit this one out of the park! This is the future with only a 20 pound weight penalty vs the manual version.

    Ok I also acquired the 2022 1100 DCT HINDA Rebel recently and there is one part I hate and again it's because it's a DCT when you engage it just like on a car when you put it on drive mode. Sometime on a stop sign it tends to want to go forward there's a slight resistance and the only way to get around it is you have to take the brake lever to press the neutral button. Also when doing a reverse you have to go to neutral if I had a manual all I have to do is engage the clutch and it's the gears are freed up. Lastly It stalls on stoplight I did a DCT reset and so far it's been behaving still not convinced the issue is fixed I stalled at least 4 times on a stop light and got caught when the light turned green No Bueno. Ok that's my 2 cent

  • @capurafarol
    @capurafarol 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Not trying to nitpick or be condescending but it sounds to me like you don’t know how to ride this particular model of bike well.
    #1-Not only have I ridden the DCT, but I did a ton of research before hand and not one time in all my rides or any of the reviews did the shifting go “ca-chunk”. No one heard or felt what you are talking about during the shifting of the transmission. Every review I’ve seen and heard said it’s super smooth and you can’t even tell when in automatic that the gear even shifted unless you look down at your gauge. Maybe you got one with a bad transmission.
    #2- just like an automatic car, transmissions will shift into the higher gears faster or eco mode, and in most cases be cruising around at 35 miles an hour in its highest gear. This is expected and observed in all new modern transmissions today especially with the focus on gas economy. The nice thing about the DCT is you can change modes on the bike to give you more power, less engine braking and more torque, just like sport modes in an automatic car, thus increasing the rpms and allowing you to be in a lower gear to gain faster acceleration. This is real basic.
    #3- Two things you need to practice on the DCT. If you want torque or speed coming out of a corner, throw it in manual and use it like you would a race car and accelerate out of that corner. Again, something easily done but switching to the manual user mode. Second, crank on the gas. This 1100 has enough giddy up to really push the bike even coming out of the corners. If you are not getting that response, check your mode as you might have it in low power or rain mode.
    #4- Get used to the take off on this bike. The quicker you get to speed, the less you will
    Likely dump the bike. Get use to its responsive throttle and spot trying to treat it as a manual clutch bike. It’s not.
    #5- I actually agree with you on this one. It’s a funky design. I went ahead and added some forward foot pedals and now I don’t have that problem. Purely a design flaw, easy to fix.

    ride the bike around until it's fully warmed up. don't just idle, transmission needs to be at normal operating temp as well for best results. park it and shut it off with the key. Hold D and turn the bike on with the key. Do not start the engine. when the check engine light goes out, release D, then press DDNDN. the gear indicator should then show a bar in the middle and the user ride mode display should start flashing. During this time the bike is adjusting, so just wait. When the gear indicator switches back to N and the user mode display stops blinking, it is finished. turn the ignition off, back on, and it's ready to go. it will be noticeably smoother. Honda does this every time the bike is serviced, think of it as the DCT version of checking and adjusting clutch cables and shifter linkages.

      Same procedure on a VW DSG transmission. Fluid is changed every 40k miles, and the same procedure is used once transmission is up to temperature, it' adjusts the friction points for clutch and engagement for all 6 gears, both shifting up and shifting down. I cannot agree with you. I just traded my Harley Road Glide for a 2024 Rebel 1100 DCT and I LOVE IT! It is so fun to ride and I love the DCT. There are times that I have felt like I wanted to downshift so I tapped the paddle and bam, I'm where I thought I wanted to be. But 99% of the time, I just let the DCT do its work and I don't look at the gears all the time, because on this bike, it doesn't matter. You're talking about being in a gear when you think it should be a different gear - but that's on a manual. Not sure what it did in 2021 but now the bike knows when you are on a curve so it doesn't upshift to keep more power and torque now. Most people drive automatic cars and when was the last time soneone complained about how it shifted? Never. Because we are all used to how it shifts. You want to pass, slam on the gas and let the transmission downshift. Well the DCT does the same thing. Don't have to think about it and can fully enjoy the ride. I love the DCT and it seems to be working tremendously for me

  • @Blinkubus
    @Blinkubus 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Regarding the snatchy throttle and people dropping it, could it be because of the selected riding mode? I'd assume Sport mode would cause that to a new rider, but Rain and Standard wouldn't. I can't talk about the sound/feel of the gears changing, but out of that list the only thing that seemed like an actual problem is the left pedal. Everything else seems to be pretty much about getting used to a different style of bike. One would probably be complaining about the opposite thing if they rode their entire life on DCT bikes and suddenly changed to a manual bike: "How come I need to think about which gear to shift to when coming out of a turn? Come on, Honda, make your bike smarter!"

    It shouldn't be clunky at all. From what I'v seen it should be butter smooth. So it makes a noise while shifting. If that's a dealbreaker then do you get irritated when a manual shift bike makes a noise when shifting?
    When youi need a lower gear you press the gear shift on the left side. Not difficult.
    If you aren't using the power it uses the higher gears.
    You know you are coming out of a corner. Press the downshift.
    Use rain, or custom in city driving.

    I feel obligated to comment, Honda DCT’s DO NOT have clunky shifting unless the bike has not been correctly initialized, either at the factory or by the dealer. On my 2018 Wing the shifts are virtually undetectable aside from hearing them on the 1 to 2 shifts. Although this is for the Wing it’s the same procedure Honda has used for years with the DCT.
