@@DruBee333 agree, but they need the feature of adding arbitrary points to a path first, right now it seems to only follow ways. A GPX would be useless because it rarely follows the path exactly.
Thanks for the video! There are a few things here I haven't seen reported anywhere else. The all-day training load feature is really interesting! It might end up being a good surrogate for something like Garmin's stress score.
The significant feature for me, which many reviewers have largely overlooked, is the double-tap to scroll through pages during a workout. Using a touch screen with gloves or sweaty hands is impossible, and I’m not a fan of the scroll wheel. Previously, the double-tap enabled scroll was only possible when paused, but with the most recent version, it works while moving.
Now they need to add the ability to edit treadmill distances post workout! Excited for watchOS 11 to release. I have thought about getting the beta, but I may wait because I hear the battery drain has been a little rough.
Downloaded the public beta on my watch yesterday, battery life seems mostly unchanged. But the battery life with iOS 18 on my iPhone is really bad. And that’s with a 13 Pro Max that’s not even a year old (Apple Watch Ultra 2 is about half a year).
@@frankg7412 interesting, maybe I will give the beta a try then. iOS 18 has been great on my 14 pro max unlike iOS 17’s battery drain last year. And I have an Apple Watch Ultra 1, so hopefully I don’t notice any effect in the battery
Thank you for this video! I went back to Apple Watch for business reasons, and have been missing a lot of these metrics from my Garmin. I’m currently downloading the beta.
Considering switching from Garmin to Apple this year. Use my edge computer for all my serious training and think I can let go of body battery etc now that Apple seems to have a decent alternative. The training load from Apple I like a lot! With Garmin I only really get kudos from intervals.
Very interesting updates, particularly with the mapping. It’s much harder with garmin to sync stuff to the watch, and that’s one of the reasons I might switch. Bottom line is Apple seems to progress more quickly than garmin. I see the gaps on gpx etc, but wouldn’t be surprised if they fix that fairly soon.
Garmin has gotten a lot better with routes. You can design a route in a very similar way in Garmin Connect and simply tap "send to device" and you'll have it on your watch moments later!
Great video. So, if I were to get a Garmin or Suunto watch would it be easier to just use the iPhone fitness app to track everything vs using the Garmin or Suunto apps?
I'm still waiting for a quick toggle for always on display. They gave us volume toggle 😒. Also a full red, low light interface would be great not just the home screen. Thanks for the insight.
Thank you for this! Do you happen to know if you can save the route of a previous walk activity as an offline map so you can repeat the route again in a future activity?
This was a great video. I’ve always had Apple Watches and recently switched to Garmin and it’s being great but I still miss some of the Apple Watch Ultra features. Will download new update and give it a try again…
New route feature looks like a massive improvement - just wish they had suggested route creation like Strava / Garmin for exploring a new area. Also they really should make the maps/navigation view as a workout view in the workout app when running. Just like the heart rate view is.
@@ChaseTheSummitYou don’t need a schedule if you manually start sleep in the do not disturb button, been doing it like that at least since watchOS 10 came out
You don’t need a schedule nor do you have to manually set it. It does a pretty great job at detecting when you’re sleep. I’m a aircraft technician and i work overnights and it picks up my naps as well when I finally get home and go to sleep
Good question, I should have mentioned that. I don't understand it either. HRV is arguably one of the best metrics for keeping tabs on your wellness... Apple even collects HRV in the background but for whatever reason decided not to use it here. I suspect because it's a more "advanced" metric and they're trying to make the vitals app appeal to the masses and not super health nerds like us lol.
As a Garmin user who doesn't run, the training load is very interesting as it might be more helpful to strength training than Connect. Sucks that Vitals seems to only work with AW, though.
No doubt Apple has come a very long way with their sport features on the Apple Watch. In the end I suppose it is really just down to personal preferences, and budget, when it comes to choosing your next sports watch. For me though I will stick with my Garmin Fenix 7 Pro, which does absolutely everything I need it to do, and an awful lot more than that too.
Thanks for the video Dave! Just downloaded the PB for watchOS 11. Excited for the updates but really would love to see that import/export for route creation. Would be great for sending routes to WOD (my preferred running app), for now I'm using easyroute or Strava.
Maps should be world wide however the more details contour maps with contour lines and detailed trail names are USA only for now but will expand over time.
Thank you so much for your videos and this one, quick question, for the routes planning and maps, are they just limited to walking, running and hiking or is cycling an option? Thank you.
Works on hiking trails as well! But those trails need to be available in Apple Maps. In my area there’s pretty good coverage. However I can’t find a way to change my “activity” type for the estimated completion time. For example run vs walk… again this is beta and could change!
Question: about vitals app Any information about the wrist temperature information for series 6 and series 7 Since those series doesn’t have temperature sensors What would be it’s user UI interface looks like and does affect your vitals measurements
Basically whatever feature the watch supports will be displayed. For example, new Ultra 2's don't support SPO2 since Apple was sued over it last year and ultimately removed from new devices. In that case, SPO2 simply won't be displayed and there will be no icon for it at all. Same goes for wrist temperature, if the device doesn't support it it simply won't exist within the vitals app.
Yup, but you need to jump between the two different apps. However turn notifications will still pop up at the top of the screen regardless and you’ll see that during your workout.
Hey! Thanks for the video!! - happen to know if there is still no way to have health app steps match in activity app? Essentially want my steps from garmin activity to show up on Apple Watch. THANKS
Two different things. Training readiness is tracking how ready you are to take on more training judging by sleep, recovery, HRV, Stress. along with your training load. Training Load and Training Status are only considering your activities and ignoring the other factors. They're both useful in different scenarios but I would like to see a "training readiness" competitor on Apple WatchOS natively.
It will work anywhere Apple Maps is supported. However, the contour maps and trails will only work in the USA for now until it's expanded to other regions.
Can you do manual routes? Like if you create a route where there is no predefined trail does Apple let you do that? Or force you to stick to roads/trails that are in Apple maps
I find it so annoying that Apple uses a circle instead of an arrow as the icon for the maps on the watch. it makes it so much harder to orient myself and know which direction I’m facing. Sometimes the small UI differences can actually be full on dealbreakers.
With the routes on the watch do you have to open the maps app start the route and then start a run workout? Or is there anyway to start th route and run in the workouts app?
Maps/Navigation are totally separate from the Workout app so you need to sort of switch between apps mid-run to start a navigation or execute a route. Not a huge deal with a double tap of the digital crown but it would be nice if they embedded maps in the workout app or made that an option. Once you're navigating though you will get turn notifications at the top of the screen even if you're in the workout app.
So they basically killed athlytic, gentle streak, training today and so on, for most people at least. Does look cool though, not gonna lie. Especially the modular ultra bezel with the 2 metrics.
I wouldn't say they killed those apps. Athlytic is more of a Whoop competitor providing insight into your sleep and recovery. The Vitals App just displays the metrics your Apple Watch was already collecting and provides indication if anything looks off but doesn't give you a "recovery score" or any insight on how training is affecting your sleep/health.
Yesterday I've upgraded to public beta on iphone and watch, set this training mode on ultra 2 modular face, but it just loaded the sleep stuff on the left, the training is saying 1/14 days, but not graphics there on the right.
