      What I don't get... is... don't the trigger warnings remind people of the same shit anyway? So you would need a trigger warning about the trigger warning... or you could just make it self referencing, like, "this trigger warning will remind you of a very sad death, and the fleetingness of your own short existence". But, for episodes that don't even mention death. "Oh, and cancer, and animal cruelty. Remember the holocaust? Starving children? That woman who put a cat in a bin? Remember that?"

    For what it's worth, I've had treatment for PTSD & one of the first things you learn in therapy is how to manage your triggers in a healthy way. If people are triggered by TH-cam videos, maybe the internet is just not for them

    • @annoloki
      @annoloki 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yep, the most important thing is to remember where your feelings come from... when people try to block out the painful memories, they only forget that the feeling is there, so the brain tries to find reasons for the feeling in the rest of life... like, the feeling of being attacked, if you try to forget why, people become very good at interpreting other interactions in ways that explain the feeling of being attacked, pushing those who love and care away. That's when trauma becomes a disorder, as it gets in the way of other interactions, and where the "and how does that make you feel?" trope of counselling comes from... not to remind you of the feeling, but to remind you where the feeling comes from, so you don't seek to explain the feeling in situations that aren't the cause of it.

    • @MisakaMikotoDesu
      @MisakaMikotoDesu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I'm in treatment for PTSD as well and I'm taught NOT to avoid my triggers. You slowly have to train your body and mind to recognize that situations which trigger you are safe, that way you stop getting triggered. Giving "trigger warnings" just enable PTSD symptoms.

    • @0tterMom
      @0tterMom 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@MisakaMikotoDesu I mean, I feep like the warnings at least give people with PTSD a chance to prepare themselves or avoid if it's been a day full of triggers. It's not good to get overwhelmed, but take it slowly and safely

      That's assuming people A) have access to mental health providers and B) we don't have startlingly clear evidence that *talking* about suicide makes people who are suicidal more likely to do it. "Just suck it up" is such a boomer mentality of helping people. It doesn't work. These warnings are for people who *can't* suck it up. That's the fucking point. Not everything has to do with ptsd.

    I wish you'd sell a small package with testers, containing all of the perfume scents. For those who can get headaches from perfume, and/or have asthma issues due to it, it would be nice to be able to test these products without buying a full bottle.

    • @otakuman706
      @otakuman706 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I gotta say I too would like this. I'd like to give them a shot, but some stuff is so damn rough on me. Sadly I kinda doubt it'll happen, but I would like it.
      Not quite serious asthma stuff, but it hurts my sinuses, and throat, and does make breathing more difficult. Bad enough that some have caused problems just from being opened/sprayed on the other side of the house- rooms away. Generally I just have to leave and wait for it to settle.
      Obviously it's not as bad with distance like that, but its still a hassel.

    Hi Simon, on the topic of trigger warnings, Jonathan Haidt and Greg Lukianoff, who wrote "The Coddling of the American Mind," quote Richard McNally, the director of clinical training in Havard's Department of Psychology as saying "Trigger warnings are counter-therapeutic because they encourage avoidance of reminders of trauma, and avoidance maintains PTSD." They state that avoidance of distressing material is a symptom of PTSD, not a treatment for it. I'm always happy when people forgo the trigger warnings, as I find that they just increase anxiety over a topic. When friends and family try to avoid talking about a few select topics that they know may trigger my PTSD, or they say "you shouldn't listen to this podcast or watch this show because it may upset you" it makes me feel weak. Building up an expectation that I couldn't possibly handle listening to a particular topic makes me more anxious than I would normally feel were I to stumble onto the topic unexpectedly, which when it has happened, has not caused me to freak out. I've been able to handle it every time. If people are never exposed to what triggers anxiety in themselves, they'll never have the opportunity to overcome their fears.

    • @TalanXavier
      @TalanXavier 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's also the fact that trigger warnings usually come with a descriptor of what they're warning you about, which still tells you what's going to be discussed even if you do decide not to watch it. You're now primed with an idea about a "trigger" without any context around it and it leaves you to imagine what it might be and can actually end up worse than the reality in your mind.

    So one of my favorite channels does use trigger warnings in their videos, and I greatly appreciate it because it gives people who are struggling with things or are extremely sensitive the chance to skip something they’re not in the headspace to watch.
    I’m so glad I was able to watch this episode AFTER my bout with negative thoughts had dissipated because that abrupt cut to su*c*de would have messed me up more than I already was.
    Trigger warnings aren’t for “softies”. Even though I’m past the negative thoughts, I was so uncomfortable watching that segment I just skipped past it. Not everyone has developed coping strategies, just like not everyone knows if they have triggers. That’s the worst part of it. Some people are in desperate need of mental healthcare, but due to who knows what factors, they can’t seek it out.
    Roast me all you want. I’ve got depression. I’ve got anxiety. I’ve got ADHD. Hell, I’ve even got PTSD. I see a therapist weekly and a psychiatrist every few months. I’m still prone to negative thoughts even being on medications and doing therapy. It takes a LOT of work to unpack decades of trauma. I’m 6 years in and still haven’t dealt with a lot of things. You need to remember those that are just starting their journey to healing. A trigger warning, even as text or a title card, helps everyone. Going off on those you consider “soft” doesn’t just hurt feelings, it causes harm that can be irreparable.
    That’s just my honest opinion. I’ll let the medical professionals take it from here.

Marketing isn't usually that out of touch and disturbing.

  • @malinbergvall

    The point of trigger warnings is that the person can choose to expose themselves to it, in stead of having it sprung on them by surprise. Just like someone who has a spider phobia can get over it by deliberately exposing themselves to situations containing spiders while they remain in control. But you surprising them with spiders by putting them in their stuff or waking them up by putting a spider on their face will make their phobia worse.
    Would it really be such a sacrifice to ask Sam to put a small content warning before the video if it contains stuff like suicide jokes? You don't need to change anything about how you do the video, but the people in your audience who would get affected by it get agency over if they want to expose themselves to it. And that's how you can help them grow their balls in stead of kicking them in their balls.
