Dude was 6'3" and lean, and looked pretty good especially in those kneeling shots. And probably what girls would gravitate towards rather than those mass monsters. Wouldnt mind those stats myself.
This was 1953. Only guys who think the current guys are growth and gear free and look great think amateur bodybuilders from that era (including Sean) looked unimpressive.
Lmao, if you don't know who Sean Connery is. I guess I'm kinda showing my age a little bit, but I do think Sean Connery and his name is still somewhat relevant today. I think he's an icon and icons are always relevant.
Some of those commenting on Connery's supposed lack of size - remember, he has a huge frame and was only 23 - might be forgetting/not have known that, in the UK, food rationing continued well after the end of World War 2, and that meat was rationed until 1954! Which might have impacted somewhat on the ability of UK-based bodybuilders to put on mass. Given when he was competing, his age and the size of the frame he had to fill, I think Connery looked pretty good. A pity that he didn't keep it up - he still had a decent frame in the early Bond films, but had lost any definition or muscle development - and in Diamonds are Forever he looked badly out of shape.
Jonbombs nah fam i was born in 2001 and ten years ago i had already seen indiana jones and most of his james bond movies, if you dont know who sean conney is you are simply ignorant
Sean Connery's physique looks 100 times better than the guys he's standing next to in that photo, and certainly much better than the roid monsters that have become the "norm" today. There is such a thing as going too far...
Let me see if I got the right. Connery is 86 and a multi millionaire. The other day you had a video of 'real' body builders - all of whom died in their thirties or forties. Sounds like Connery got out just in time.
I'm glad you did the video, as I was one who requested you did this video. However, never said he won.... I knew he placed 3rd. The important thing for me, I think it really shows the type of competitor (pro, amateurs, or junior) from the 1950's compared to today. The guys seems to have a more fitness/swimmer/gymnastic build than they do strongman/bodybuilder. More lean, less bulk, even for the bigger guys it seems. Just an opinion based on the pictures.
There were MANY requests besides yours. But I never did a video because I thought people just didn't know what they were talking about when they kept saying he won.
Nick's Strength and Power I saw the other requests in previous videos, and I should have worded what I said above a little better. Nonetheless, I think it was a cool topic, and thank you for the video. I also meant to say "for the record, I knew he placed third, not first..." what I type in haste while working.... anyways, love the channel, keep it up man. These videos are really interesting.
"The important thing for me, I think it really shows the type of competitor (pro, amateurs, or junior) from the 1950's compared to today." Yea that's because back then Steroids were not involved, go look at a clean drug free contest. For instance, my maximum lean bicep size is estimated at only 18 inches drug free, natural. All those competitors are on the juice, but I'm 48, and I still have my health, I'm still alive, and I'm a Beast.
More respect for these guys getting these physiques naturally than the guys who use everything today and call it hard work when scientific studies say you can even take steroids and not work out and put on more muscle mass than a natty who does work out. The whole bodybuilding thing would be a lot more interesting if we stopped putting roid/HGH physiques on a pedestal. That way we can really see who put in the hard work when it comes to diet, recovery and training.
He was 5th in the NABBA Mr Universe Amateur Tall class and in the 1959 film "The Frightened City" his character was tough guy who claimed to be "6ft 1ins tall and 13st 8lbs ( he weighed 200lbs in the 1953 Mr Universe).
Connery was by all accounts an excellent natural athelete and was offered professional rugby and soccer contracts. I'm sure he worked out to stay in optimal physical shape for sports...but being an aspiring actor around 1952 he wouldn't have been working out with mass and size in mind. That said, his genetics ( height, broad shoulders and slim torso) probably would have made for an excellent body builder.
I absolutely ł love all this quality content you are producing. First thing I do when I get home from work is search for new content on your Channel. Your chat about politics was awesome,. More of the same please. Keep up the good work.
Think you're being a little harsh on Connery considering it was early 1950s. You should check other actors, particularly those that starred in peplum and spaghetti western. Google image "Charles Bronson Run of the Arrow" (1957 film) and check the chest, shoulders and veins. Most guys today would want that look.
I once had a special edition of Joe Weider's Muscle Builder or Muscle Power magazine that featured every Mr. Universe contest and winner from the very beginning until the early 1960's. So I was very much aware that Sean Connery participated in the 1953 Mr. Universe Contest but was not the winner. That magazine unfortunately is lost to time but I would love to have it back again.
Sir Thomas Sean Connery. Connery was knighted by Elizabeth II at an investiture ceremony at Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh on 5 July 2000. Nice video but, if the reason for this video is educational, you should'nt make the mistake of forgetting the prefix Sir before adressing him.
i wonder what NABBA's "SuperBowl" is? and when? and where do i get to watch the replay or live stream of the pro show. interested about knowing what alternatives are to IFBB and what their "1 big game shows" are.
Looks like he did'nt take steroids looks like he'd never win a bodybuilding competition, but if it was a best looking guy competiton i bet he would piss it !!!
I'm more of a Power Lifter myself, not only did I compete once, but I lifted raw against equipped lifters and got second. Had I signed up as lifting raw, I would of won that class that day. I've weight lifted, powerlifted, and worked out like a body builder off and on since 1984, don't you think that's more validation than a day at a contest? You know, anyone can enter a contest, but few will place.
Mar Rastapopoulos NO but at one time you were. in high school i was a baseball player today i still get in the batting cage and hit baseballs but i dont play in a game i am not a player any more so if BODYBUILDING is a sport you must COMPETE to be a BODYBUILDER.
Lol, he looks way better than all of the guys in that photo. Way more athletic and sexy. But bodybuilding is not about looking naturally athletic... most of the guys there have short and stocky arms.... again.. prefered in bodybuilding
how about lord Cresva, he bodybuilder, youtoob celery and ispiration to milliins even though he has add, adhd, ocd, ebola, aids, squint and survived 17 major car assident and 3 aeroplane crash. it politics
What do you think of doing a full body workout every other day, I have martial arts in Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, so what if I did a full body workout on Monday Wednesday and Friday?
I read an interview with Connery (Not in muscle magazine) and, while verifying that he did enter the Mr Universe, he credited his build to heavy physical work. In a much earlier interview . . in Iron Man I think . . he was much more forthcoming about his training and of course he did lift weights. Maybe in the later interview he wanted to distance himself from what bodybuilding has become with all the drugs?
To be honest his physique was pretty decent for an amateur in the early 50's...
There can't possibly be anyone that doesn't know who Sean Connery is
Idk, there's some young fella watching my vids lol
Scott Siegel me lol
Nick your right, some of these youngsters don't know any actors before the 90's
wayne marshall bruce lee and many others i know the ones who do martial arts
i didnt
Dude was 6'3" and lean, and looked pretty good especially in those kneeling shots. And probably what girls would gravitate towards rather than those mass monsters. Wouldnt mind those stats myself.
hes sean connery they gravitating towards him regardless 😂
Amas Bansal you know his weight
Building your muscles isn't about attracting women, if you do it just for the ladies it is your confidence you need to build not your biceps.
Do you think these mass monsters train to impress girls???
craig cotter, building your body does help build your confidence though. It's not the only thing you should do
...but it helps.
The name is Universe...Mr. Universe.
Good one..!
knock knock
who's there?
dishes
dishes who?
dishes sean connery
Andefir LoL
😂
This was 1953. Only guys who think the current guys are growth and gear free and look great think amateur bodybuilders from that era (including Sean) looked unimpressive.
Hands down my favorite James Bond ..imo he played the roll perfectly..
The best James Bond hands down.
My names Bond, Natty Bond
Lmao, if you don't know who Sean Connery is. I guess I'm kinda showing my age a little bit, but I do think Sean Connery and his name is still somewhat relevant today. I think he's an icon and icons are always relevant.

He didn't win the Mr Universe, he won the 'Mishta Universh'
he looks pretty good for a tall guy. Anybody with size were generally short back then.
How about a video about Jean-Claude Van Damme? He's nicknamed "Muscles from Brussels", and he once won the Mr Belgium title.
I remember him especially from 1988 Bloodsport, along with Bolo Yeung. Good ol' times. Would be nice to see both these actors on Nicks channel.
Michael Wan I'd love a JCVD one too.
Just did movie w
him.
Michael Wan It wasn't a body building competition though. He became the belgian Shotokan Karate Champ...
Michael Wan i think he did one about him
Zurvan Sorry, you're wrong, as I've mentioned above, he once won the Mr Belgium title, and Mr Belgium was a bodybuilding competition.
Years ago I saw him speaking of this on the Tonight Show. He said that he lost to a guy named Bill Pearl, who made him look like Minnie Pearl.
"For those of you who don´t know who Sean Connery is"... poor TH-cam Generation...
hgwiechie he hasn't been in a film or the spotlight for years. Probably the main way young people will find out about Connery is actually via youtube
Jonbombs nah fam i was born in 2001 and ten years ago i had already seen indiana jones and most of his james bond movies, if you dont know who sean conney is you are simply ignorant
He had an impressive physique ... tall with very wide shoulders ... A man's man .
I read that he placed 3rd in his class. He was a lifeguard at the time and entered on a lark.
Thanks for covering this Nick!
1953 my nigga back then they told athletes lifting weights would make you slow!
I'm glad you did the video, as I was one who requested you did this video. However, never said he won.... I knew he placed 3rd. Yes he was a Royal Navy diver, definitely the jacked swimmer look.
"The important thing for me, I think it really shows the type of competitor (pro, amateurs, or junior) from the 1950's compared to today."

He still had a great physique for his age. Lean and mean.
You should do a video on "old" classic physique vs. the "new" classic physique
Sean Connery had a good body. A 3rd place isnt bad.
He was 5th in the NABBA Mr Universe Amateur Tall class and in the 1959 film "The Frightened City" his character was tough guy who claimed to be "6ft 1ins tall and 13st 8lbs ( he weighed 200lbs in the 1953 Mr Universe).

Greatest Bond ever. Also who I was named after. Great video as always Nick
hey Nick ur recent uploads r very interesting n informative!!!
I absolutely ł love all this quality content you are producing. First thing I do when I get home from work is search for new content on your Channel. Your chat about politics was awesome,. More of the same please. Keep up the good work.
Alex Brookner which video was that
Good job investigating and presenting Nick!
How many bodybuilders are visible in this photo 2:05 ? Answer: 007.
No steroids in them days
TRUTH-XPOSED steroids were first made in 1939 so there was probably guys on roids at the show but not that many
Think you're being a little harsh on Connery considering it was early 1950s. You should check other actors, particularly those that starred in peplum and spaghetti western. Google image "Charles Bronson Run of the Arrow" (1957 film) and check the chest, shoulders and veins. Most guys today would want that look.
Steve Reeves won Mr Universe in the 50's and non of them guys look anything compared to him.
Damn never knew this, good video.
You mean there was a time that actors didn't use steroids but there are so many super ripped natural body's on screen these days ,BS
Enjoyed the video. How about a video talking about the evolution of criteria for judges
"He Choose, Wisely" in his career path.
Sean Connery...bodybuilding all before the "steroid" era" came into full swing.
One of my fav actors of all time, cool to know where he competed once.
great pics of Sean in Bill Pearls Keys to the inner universe
Hey, could you do a video about Marvin Eder?
Yeaaah, Marvin Eder!!
bodybuilding Fact: Sean Sonnery played old James Bond in THE ROCK woth nicholas cage
How about doing one on Carl Weathers? He was proper bodybuilding material!
Need a video on William ''Falconetti''Smith, incredible physique, phenomenal triceps
Guy pearse was a bodybuilder in Australia. Have you heard of Rory Leidelmeyer?
Sir Thomas Sean Connery. Connery was knighted by Elizabeth II at an investiture ceremony at Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh on 5 July 2000. Nice video but, if the reason for this video is educational, you should'nt make the mistake of forgetting the prefix Sir before adressing him.

Nicks Strength and Power You make great videos and certainly do your research, keep up the great work, always enjoying the videos from Australia 🇦🇺
I had no idea amazing content as usual
"For those of you who don't know who Sean Connery is..." that's where I started choking on my lunch.
He looked fantastic, for what he was, l'm sure Kenny K.O will set you straight on this 😂😂😂😂
*_He's the 4th guy from the right too lmao_*
sorry had to throw in a joke :)
You ain't wrong lol
No, he's the 1st guy from the middle. I'm dead serious.
WELL at least he COMPETED! i my opinion if you never COMPETED you are not really a BODYBUILDER you just work out.
Raymond Ervin competing in the man bikini contest is def not a must
interesting opinion...
So if you competed once, you're a bodybuilder for life? Just curious.

Nick, Are you ever gonna do more videos with ur hedgehog?🙄
yes
I think the hedgehog is very interesting and not a mass monster.
Highlander, The Rock....
i don't think they were doing steroids as much so winning something like a body building back in the day like that must of been more legit.
Sean Connery still a legend tho
Is it even possible not to know who Sean Connery is? Like me not knowing John Wayne
Lol, he looks way better than all of the guys in that photo. Way more athletic and sexy. But bodybuilding is not about looking naturally athletic... most of the guys there have short and stocky arms.... again.. prefered in bodybuilding
how about lord Cresva, he bodybuilder, youtoob celery and ispiration to milliins even though he has add, adhd, ocd, ebola, aids, squint and survived 17 major car assident and 3 aeroplane crash.
it politics
pisstrooper101 he also survived the slight 1 percent of autism
he looks best in that group...
Nick, love your videos ! Keep it coming brother.
What time is the first match at Wimbledon, Sean?
Ten ish
That guy on the far left with Sean being 4th if he was on steroids he would be a MONSTER.
Sean Connery is the reason for my slicked back hair ... and love of blondes 😩
can you make a video about "thierry pastel"
How do you make so much content
hey Nick I feel you should do a video about abs
I do have the abs but there's no definition in them I feel you should make a video on that
You forgot highlander
Went on to do more important things than impressing other men with his body.
Awesome! thanks for the video. :)
Sean looks more like a swimmer than a bodybuilder!
Especially with those posing trunks!
The Best Bond.
What do you think of doing a full body workout every other day, I have martial arts in Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, so what if I did a full body workout on Monday Wednesday and Friday?
Bond James Bond
I'm waiting for your biography on Dennis Tinerino, he had a very colorful life. Pro bodybuilder, Convicted Pimp and Christian Minister.
Of course Sean Connery wasn't Mr. Universe.
He was Universe.....Mr. Universe. ;-p
Don't forget Highlander
Is Sean Connery holding a Kukri knife at 3:16?
with 300 million net worth he could have the history books rewritten.
what about Bruce Lee? Could he have been a golden age lighweight bodybuilder mr olympia?
I heard he was a very good pozher.
I heard this as well...great research man
Chris Farley was a 5 time Universe Chapion.
never clicked a video so fast!!
wow, awesome, learn something new every day.
Cheers!
I thought he came in 3rd
I read an interview with Connery (Not in muscle magazine) and, while verifying that he did enter the Mr Universe, he credited his build to heavy physical work. So who give rat ass he won Mr. universe or not , the main thing he was the best Bond and the best actor !
Nick, why don't you do a review for Muscle Man from Regular Show...should be a good one...
Man I’m big bond fan but didn’t know he won Mr. Universe
I bet he got extra points for his accent. Blew away the competition in that regard at least. Raised his eyebrows at the judges too high to win.
