Clancy Brown is one of the most underrated actors in the last 25 years. He brings something unique to every character. Salute to your career Mr. Brown.
I doubt any other actor could have pulled off The Kurgan like Clancy did. Big, brutal, careless, ruthless, insane and smart. Clancy made that character mean something.
@@ThemeOfSecrets He definitely did an amazing job with the role! The Kurgan was born 6 years before Jesus. Clancy played the character as someone who has been around since the invention of the wheel. The character has seen everything and done everything. Example, when the girl says "Hi! I'm Candy", Kurgan's response was "Of course you are", as in he's heard that line a million times before. Clancy perfectly nailed all that about the character, the seen it all and done it all parts. That's the reason why it would have been unlikely for another actor to have done better than Clancy. Lambert also did a great job with his character! Lambert played the character as someone who has been outcast by society way too many times and the emotional toll shows. Connery also did well with his character. Connery played Ramirez as more of a fun-loving upper-class character. Roxanne Hart also did great! The two middle aged actors playing the bumbling detectives also did great. Still, the film is far from perfect, but that's because the production was on the fly as they filmed. Clancy Brown is a national treasure. It’s gratifying after all these years to finally hear why in the hell a Scot was playing a Spaniard and a Belgian played a Scot (with no attempt at the accent whatsoever). I love that movie.
Ironic we got the two Lex Luthors talking to each other, the best live-action version in Smallville and the animated version in the DC Animated Universe.
Heh... i only got that after Clancey had been chatting a while and the camera cut back to Rosenbaum.... "HEY!....it's....and.....both..... LEXCEPTION !!!"
Clancy Brown was outstanding as the Kurgan, in the epic Highlander movie but the real villains were the one's who didn't pay Clancy what he was worth towards the end result of this movie. In my top 10 favourite films.
The Kurgan is one of the best film characters ever. Clancy Brown was great as Rawhide in Buckaroo Banzai. And don't forget his role in The Shawshank Redemption.
With very much due respect to the other actors in this movie, Clancy’s magnetism and screen presence absolutely made this movie. The way I see it, to offset the good guys who are in top form, you need an actor that can play larger than life bad guy to offset or balance things. I just watched it again and it’s still fun to watch and does not get old.
Which is what really propelled that movie into the stratosphere. The movie will always be great, but adding Queen's music made it really special. We should all be thankful the director was experienced with music videos because it was probably his connections that got Queen on board.
Yep. Not just using Queen songs, but making brand new ones FOR the movie. Who wants to live forever I heard was pinned on a napkin in a limo after meeting with the movie team.
@@jeffthompson9622 Princes of the Universe never could have been in Queen's Greatest Hits because the album was released in 1980, six years before Highlander was made. But it was in Greatest Hits III.
A lot of that credit goes to Queen themselves. According to RM, they were only asked to do one song for the soundtrack, but they looked at the movie and said they wanted to do the whole thing. Naturally, nobody in their right mind would turn that down.
My favorite role Clancy Brown ever did was Brother Justin Crowe on hbo’s CARNIVALE. Which was very sadly cancelled after 2 seasons. He played the “anti-christ” character so beautifully well.👍
I'm so glad I'm not the only who still thinks about Carnival . He was amazing in it . First season had me always on the fence whether he was a good guy or bad guy till the later part of the season
The Kurgan was a major character and very iconic. Imagine going through all that choreography and having to shave your head, and then not getting paid. I can't fathom how Hollywood works. Anyway, glad you took the job, Mr Brown. You were amazing!
Clancy Brown is a fucking treasure... he's alway just showed up in things i love, just making them even better. awesome actor, does not get the credit he absolutely deserves. he's done so many iconic roles over the years.
'Happy Halloween ladies!' 'Don't ever speak to me...' 'Mom :-)' 'You will always be weaker than I Highlander.' 'I know his name.' Ha he just got all the best lines lol. What a great villain and Clancy Brown was brilliant. So much of it with the villain is their voice and presence just like Vader, the Joker, Thanos, Bane etc.
In Hollywood, sports, and almost anything in life, you get paid for what you have done in the past. Playing the Kurgan boosted his worth immensely, and probably got him some of his highest-paying roles because his talent got fully exposed.
I still can't get over the fact that Clancy Brown played Mr. Krabbs (my favorite SpongeBob character) AND my favorite version of Lex Luthor in animation! I also realize that the first time I saw him act was in "The Bride," the remake of "Bride of Frankenstein" that also starred Sting and Jennifer Beals!
I was a young service man at the time and I LOVED the Highlander. Got all the merchandise that I could find over the years. The soundtrack is my favorite Queen album. A few years later when I became a dad, I named my son Connor with two O's since we already had a Scottish last name. As a die hard fan, I cannot fathom this movie without Clancy Brown nor could I have imagined him being screwed over like this having played one of the greatest screen villains ever.
Sean Connery had great foresight to see himself as Ramirez! Both his and Clancy Brown’s Kurgan were what made that film great! Clancy doing Shawshank Redemption later had the same effect in that movie that he had in Highlander. Such memorable performances!
I've been a fan of Clancy Brown since the first time he hit the screen in Highlander. I agree with Creepy847 how underrated Clancy is. If I see his name on something I'm going to watch it. Not ifs ands or buts about it, because I know he's going to bring something special to the story. It's purely horrible his treatment on Highlander. He MADE that film. Thank you, Clancy, for your incredible talent.
Oh man, the memories... I saw Highlander for the first time on a pirated VHS in elementary school at a "movie club" and it left a huge impression (I was also a bit young - 11 or 12). I had trouble understanding what was happening initially, but the action was great and Clancy was just a great villain. I love this behind-the-scenes anecdote! You guys just keep knocking them out of the park!
Very few actors can portray despicable bad guys that you can't help but like. Clancy Brown is one of those actors. His role in "Cowboys and Aliens" is my favorite.
First off, Highlander, my favourite film of all time (check the username), I remember seeing it at the cinema, I was 10 years old, way too young to actually get to see it (legally), an older friend of mine bought a ticket to see it, walked inside, and, when nobody was looking, opened the fire escape for me to get in to see it for free Secondly, anybody else realised this is Lex Luthor having a conversation with Lex Luthor?
So funny he mentioned the movie Razorback. I remember seeing a trailer that scared me sh*tless back in the 80s. Never got around to seeing it though. Sad to hear Clancy Brown never got any money out of Highlander. He was iconic as the Kurgan.
Clancy Brown is amazing. He has the physical presence to be a really intimidating villain but can pull off the warmth to be a protagonist as well. Really versatile.
I still remember Clancy as VIKING in Bad Boys and Weasel in Thunder Alley. I actually started going to movies just because he was in the movies way back at the beginning of his career. Always liked the guy and the roles he played. Was a real shame though that he was forced to shoot himself in the head three times after that argument with Buster Scruggs.
One of the best bad guy actors in recent times. Along with the Kurgan I especially loved his performance in Deadly Pursuit with Sidney Poitier. Legend.
First movie I saw him in, and I am glad it was, since in the beginning it was a mystery which of the hikers was the bad guy. Had I seen highlander first, I probably would have thought it would have been him.
@@GoldenCroc Yeah watching now he seems the most likely suspect but at the time it wasn't as abvious, especially as one of the other hikers was Scorpio from Dirty Harry! The filmmakers did a good job of teasing all of the others as potential suspects which was good.
It wasn't just the actors who made the movie a big hit. Queen did the soundtrack. I don't think Highlander would be the movie it is without the music of Queen.
One of the most enjoyable to watch and under noted actors of our time.... Thank You for decades of entertainment and countless hours of bringing stories/characters to life Clancy
Highlander is so great because of the editing by Peter Honess, who was the editor on many other successful movies, such as the Fast and the Furious, LA Confidential, and Troy. I've seen many Russell Mulcahy movies and I particularly like Razorback. One of the main reasons for Highlander's success is how smooth the segues are, particularly the transition through the fish tank to the loch. That segue truly exemplifies the art of editing. Mulcahy and Honess would later work together again on The Shadow. An excellent movie with Tim Curry and Ian McKellen in supporting roles.
My favourite part of the Highlander(after seeing it 100 times) was the tracking shot of the Kurgan walking through that dirty motel, surveying all the derelicts, drunks and druggies as he passes by each one. He’s constantly on the prowl and absorbs everything. It’s the small things such as that, which makes low budget films like The Highlander instant cult classics!
It is often said that a film is not made by its protagonist but rather by its antagonist. If that is true (and I believe it often is), then Clancy Brown's turn as Kurgan hugely contributed to the success of Highlander.
Much like Alan Rickman's Roles in Die hard and Robin Hood...there something wonderful about a great scenery chewing villainous performance from a top tier character actor
I have a soft spot for actors who played iconic villains in the 80's, I always loved the job they did and thought they deserved more then to be seen as the bad guy, which is why I love it when they get to play a good guy. From Clancy Brown to Michael Ironside to Alexander Godunov.
Clancy is the reason why I still watch Highlander to this day...best antagonist ever...but I don't really consider him a villain...when the only rule is that you have to kill everyone else to survive, except when they're in a church, then how can there truly be a bad guy when they're all murderers to begin with? He was actually just the best one, if Conner hadn't gotten in a couple of lucky shots, the Kurgan would've been the One...I always root for him...best character in that movie, hands down...the most honest one too, you didn't see him running around hiding, lying to everyone about who or what he was...he was just a man who knew what he had to do & made no bones about it...ALL HAIL THE KURGAN!!!
Yeah. I hate seeing good actors getting screwed over. It raised his profile but still, hes the big bad, cut em a break. Connery would have been cool to meet in principle (frigging legend). But i do get the "never meet your heroes" vibe from him sometimes.
@@blackc1479 If you have not seen it yet I highly recommend 'the man who would be king' . now christopher plummer has died Micheal Cain is the only one still alive
Widen's career was interesting. He was working as an EMT after college and witnessed a backdraft at a fire scene and, you guessed it, turned that experience into the script for BACKDRAFT. He then wrote and directed a little horror/thriller called THE PROPHECY that, like HIGHLANDER, became a big cult film, etc.
Yeah, the Prophecy was interesting. I liked it. The only bad part was that they chose some Air Force General as the source of evil that they needed. That was weak. Of all the brutal dictators, serial killers, etc. In the world to choose from, they choose a guy from the Air Force?

Clancy Brown is phenomenal in everything. I was mildly looking forward to the new season of "Dexter," but now I'm very much looking forward to it since I learned Clancy Brown will be the primary villain.
2 of my personal favourite roles that Clancy Brown did, is Zim in Starship Troopers. When he throws the knife, pulls it out of the guys hand, then shouts "MEDIC!". The 2nd is of course, as the voice of Lex Luthor in the animated DC universe. Keep up the great work!

That’s a brave man to tell The Kurgan he’s getting no money. That guy scared the shit out of me as a kid.
Yup, me too!
@@Jango808 Ah...remember him in Shawshank Redemption. He wasn't too nice, lol.
No doubt, I figured Clancy would have just tossed the producers into a pit with hungry dogs and tossed in a sandwich.
I don’t believe NO MONEY. Just how much/little? $5000? $20000? $300? What?
Clancy Brown is a national treasure.
It’s gratifying after all these years to finally hear why in the hell a Scot was playing a Spaniard and a Belgian played a Scot (with no attempt at the accent whatsoever). I love that movie.
That’s one of the coolest things about this movie. A French as a Scotch, and a Scotch as a Spaniard/Egyptian.
@@Filthy_Larry ...and an American playing a Russian steppe monster...
@@billyboblillybob344 yup
Christopher Lambert was born French-American, not Belgian. Still, weird casting...
Lambert did attempt the Scottish accent in the scenes where he was in Scotland
Have to say Clancy was truly great in Highlander, very important to the film. I hope he has been rewarded in incidentals since then.
Oh wow, did not realize that was Rosenbaum until I saw your comment, thanks!
It's not exactly cool to discuss right now, but Rosenbaum shared a scene with Kevin Spacey in Father of Invention.
Best “TV” live-action Lex, yes.. but for films, it’s Gene Hackman..
The second time we get two Lex Luthors in place. Remember they technically traded bodies in JLU.
Buckaroo Banzai... One of my favs.
Or his most famous role. Mr. Crabs.
@@CG-vn8iy Originally, it was supposed to be series of movies. It's a shame they didn't make more.
The Carnivale HBO TV show too.
"Yoyodyne. Got it."
Didn't realize the Clancy Brown became a top-tier voice actor for so many animated series. Dude has like 300 voice credits!
I still can't believe he's Mr. Krabs from Spongebob.
They got Queen to do the sound track as well.
Yes. I was disappointed that Princes Of The Universe was not included in Queen's best-of album.
He played the “anti-christ” character so beautifully well.👍
Agreed 1000%.. That series was excellent..the ending- missing ..

I'm so glad I'm not the only who still thinks about Carnival . He was amazing in it . First season had me always on the fence whether he was a good guy or bad guy till the later part of the season
second show i saw him in - he was so good in it. love the other actors, also. really a great show. . .
The Kurgan was a major character and very iconic. Imagine going through all that choreography and having to shave your head, and then not getting paid. I can't fathom how Hollywood works. Anyway, glad you took the job, Mr Brown. You were amazing!
When he says he didn't get paid, he means he didn't get paid _Hollywood Lead_ type money.
He did get paid , he just got paid working actor rates.
The epitome of a great character actor. One of the best of his generation. Hard to take your eyes off of him regardless of who he’s playing against.
Clancy Brown is a fucking treasure... he's alway just showed up in things i love, just making them even better. awesome actor, does not get the credit he absolutely deserves. he's done so many iconic roles over the years.
the Kurgan was my fav charcater in Highlander... "Its better to burn out ... then to fade away!!!"

"Hello Pretty"

Clancy Brown is one of those guys that automatically makes any show he's in better
Some actors and actresses have a presence that makes movies truly enjoyable. Always enjoy Clancy Brown's characters in the movies.
Never would have thought he got shafted on this role. Kruger the Kurgan was iconic.
Clancy definitely should've got a lot more money. He's a great chraracter, imposing and scary, but with a sense of humour as well.
Now I'm pissed off about Brown not getting anything.
Don't be upset. Clancy Brown has achieved and earn praise for his acting skills both On screen and behind the microphone.
Maybe some satisfaction that everyone who came across him after seeing the movie did a quiet double take and had a slight flight response.
He has a lot more than you so I wouldnt sweat it big guy
@@michaelcairns8778 You can have both. I just hate seeing this actor miss out.
@@thegadflygang5381 He just deserves to get paid like all the other actors around from that movie.
If I see Clancy Brown on something, I watch it. Cause I know that just for his performance, it'll worth the watch. Love him since Highlander.
Had that movie been made now, Clancy Brown would have gotten an Academy Award nod. He deserves it.
Love how he always plays intimidating characters but he's clearly a good dude in real life.
Seems like he'd've made a great Dude/ Lebowski
Clancy stole the show in Highlander! Great actor and seems like a great guy too.
I remember Clancy from his role in "Bad Boys" with Sean Penn
I had a serious crush on Tweety!
That must of been one of his first films! He couldn't of been much older than 20 in that film?
That is the first film I saw him as a kid myself and have been a fan since!!
The Viking Lofgren.
That was Clancy's first movie, and Sean Penn's first movie too!
I loved his Kurgan character. I would've liked to have seen more of his back-story. The Kurgan is the type of guy who would bitch-slap Darth Vader.
It would be the last thing he ever did, but yeah, that sounds pretty accurate!
@@Ogrematic he’s immortal😂 but yeah darth vader may cut his head off
One of the best villains ever!
First off, Highlander, my favourite film of all time (check the username), I remember seeing it at the cinema, I was 10 years old, way too young to actually get to see it (legally), an older friend of mine bought a ticket to see it, walked inside, and, when nobody was looking, opened the fire escape for me to get in to see it for free
Secondly, anybody else realised this is Lex Luthor having a conversation with Lex Luthor?
Try watching the Justice League cartoon, Michael voices the Flash, and there's a episode where they switch bodies.
You know it's a crazy movie when a Scot plays a Spaniard and a Frenchman plays a Scot.
Wasn't he originally Egyptian?
@@Ogrematic Yeah, I think he became Spaniard when married a Spanish princess.
So funny he mentioned the movie Razorback. I remember seeing a trailer that scared me sh*tless back in the 80s. Never got around to seeing it though.
Sad to hear Clancy Brown never got any money out of Highlander. He was iconic as the Kurgan.
Razorback is a cult classic mate, check it out.
Razorback was hot garbage

From the Kurgan to Mr Krabs. Two of Hollywood’s greatest villains, Clancy Brown is one of the greats.

After Highlander, Clancy Brown became a touchstone for me, if I saw he was in a movie , I watched it.
I loved Highlander and then Earth 2 was cool (but actually it sucks)
Clancy Brown is the only reason i ever watch Highlander & he was FABULOUS!!
It wasn't just the actors who made the movie a big hit. Queen did the soundtrack. I don't think Highlander would be the movie it is without the music of Queen.
It kills how much I want to have a beer with this guy when he has been so many villains I have so viscerally hated while watching movies.
Clancy Brown always plays such menacing villains and yet he’s such a nice guy in real life. Great actor
Clancy is a dominating presence in any role he plays! Definitely one of the greatest actors to ever grace the silver screen!
It is often said that a film is not made by its protagonist but rather by its antagonist. If that is true (and I believe it often is), then Clancy Brown's turn as Kurgan hugely contributed to the success of Highlander.
Hulk Hogan was only great because of Roddy Piper.
See also Jeffrey Combs, Brad Dourif, etc.
Clancy Brown is hands down my favorite actor/voice actor/celebrity. Love the guy.
"...of course you are..." such a classic line.
Highlander has one of the greatest opening shots in cinema. The pan shot around MSG is breathtaking.
That shot established the whole movie in 20sec ! 👍
_This Comments section is Holy ground, Highlander! Remember what Ramirez taught you!_
"Ramirez was an effete snob."
He made that film and the music score was fantastic by Queen.
Clancy Brown is a Great Actor, played a fantastic bad guy in Highlander. He deserves more than he got.
yeah wow that sucks Clancy got no money. Although it did probably propel his career more. Also I am sure working with Sean was a tru joy

And the sequels to Prophecy, while not great, were more tolerable than Highlander sequels.
Have y'all seen Backdraft 2? I actually enjoyed it!

Yeah, the Prophecy was interesting. I liked it. The only bad part was that they chose some Air Force General as the source of evil that they needed. That was weak. Of all the brutal dictators, serial killers, etc. In the world to choose from, they choose a guy from the Air Force?
