Saw him a couple of times in the Lobby bar in Cork in the early 90's. Great nights. He could keep you transfixed by his long, long funny stories, which he told while picking his guitar. What an entertainer and a seriously good guitar player. Guys like him will never make the headlines, but he and his like are where real music lives.
I don't know if Roy still does it but there was a time when you could pay him to come and play at your house or your party so somebody I know hired him. He said for a few more dollars I'll even give a guitar lesson to a small group of people so I laid out a few extra dollars for the early bird guitar lesson. That afternoon a small group of us are sitting in the living room waiting for Roy and just going in a circle picking old blues songs and I was in the middle of playing the Rev. Gary Davis ala Jorma / Hot Tuna's version of Candy-man Blues when he and his wife knocked on the door and came in. He said "I can hear them Candy-man Blues" and came in the living room and said "yeah, your playing that nice...sweet". Of course I stopped playing because I was star struck and he said "I can't figure out people like you. You play so good and then you come up and ask me if I could teach you to play." During the lesson he mentioned that just the other day he learned to play an A Minor chord on the 5th fret and showed us the position. I told him that I use that in my solo for Hesitation Blues and showed him the solo I do. He said don't know about the whole solo but I really like what you do with that A Minor do you mind if I steal it from you. That evening during the show he played Hesitation Blues and when it came to the solo he did my little A Minor trick and looked over and smiled at me. It's an honor to know I added a little guitar riff to his bag of tricks and wonder if it worked its way in to any of his other solos over the years. LOVE YOU ROY!!!!!!
