I have a exam about Carbon Cycle in two days. I should study 3 lectures about it but this video was enough. I mean, he explains better than the lecturer, it is a better summary than my notes and it's also funny lol
the fact you took the time to look, shows where you are going in life, and if you can't understand what i like, then don't worry yourself about it. and who said i was attacking her, i was trying to help from the first replier, who apparently can't take a simple compliment given to someone else. Also, other than you, who said I was insulting anyone, i dont see an insult, do you?
An anatomy and physiology professor at my university, that I work with in a biology lab, thinks that Hank and John and your crash course videos are awesome and he loves them. Just so you know, now you're validated by a professor at a leading research university.
I feel like he has a lot more energy in this episode. I think it was in part because of the personal anecdote. Thank you! You should do this more often :D
We can't stop climate change from happening, but we can reduce how fast it happens. I really wish more people would try, because it's a real issue that is affecting literally everything, whether we realize it or not.
Permaculture, reforestation, reduce consumption, stop burning fossil fuels, reduce birth rate. Everyone on earth must be educated in all five. We have started. how long it will take partly depends on the lash back from stubborn greedy bastards.
Yea humans are either to greedy to stop or they just don’t care. I’ve asked people about this and a lot of people told me “well, it won’t happen in my lifetime, so why should I care?”
Jessie Class Im assuming by "climate change" your reffering to environmental degradation due to climate change but why should we slow it, if it is inevitable than shouldnt we spped it up and bring the collapse quickly to avoid even more damage?
"Earth is basically a closed system." *THANK YOU!!!!* Seriously, I've been trying to get this into the brains around me for YEARS!! It's a daymn relief that I'm not COMPLETELY alone!!🤣😫🤣
Your videos are so helpful and entertaining. With so many unreliable and differing answers out there, I find that this has been the most reliable source of info. Has helped me so much with studying for tests and exams! Thank you and please never stop creating these. They're literal life-savers.
For those of you talking about the ocean getting saltier and saltier, remember that there's only so much salt that water will retain. Think of adding salt to a glass of water. You can add a certain amount and it will mix, but too much will just leave a lot of salt at the bottom.
I have ADHD, and it makes it laughingly easy for me to lose my focus while doing just about anything, especially learning. But somehow, I didn't lose my focus while watching this video! You explained it in an interesting way, talked at the right speed, and made little jokes that kept my interest. The background is plain and dark, and your clothes weren't incredibly bright or distracting. I just want to say thanks, since I really enjoy science and can't typically learn about it because of my ADHD, and now I can!
Right there with you! Been binge watching, and loving it. ADHD is NOT "classroom compatible" (generally speaking, anyway). We need more variety in instruction, and I THANK HANK for providing some!!😁👍❣❣❣
Cramming for my Bio exam tomorrow, this is helping astronomically.... Thanks so much, Hank, for making Biology/Ecology interesting! I'll dedicate my grade to you!
Great video guys! I was hoping you guys would add a section on ocean acidification as it seems highly relevant to the cycles that you cover. The fact that the oceans dissolve carbon dioxide and act as a huge carbon sink is pretty important. Especially as this acidifies our ocean and leads to the "bleaching" or death of coral reefs, or what I like to think of as the womb of the oceans.
+Marianne “Marzanna” Nowottny how about his brother (John) and the rest of the crash course people. I only mention specifically John because ap world history exam was easier because of him.
0:49 Phosphorus is a noun that names an element, phosphorous is an adjective that relates to the element phosphorus (especially with a valence of three).
I learned Sublimation (Solid --> Gas), Deposition (Gas --> Solid), and a greater understanding of permafrost, that it contains frozen plant matter that decomposes when permafrost melts and Carbon Dioxide and Methane are released into the atmosphere! Thanks
I love you, Hank! You are always informative, interesting, and, of course, awesome. AA big thank you to you and John for always providing nuggets of cool information to share with my more eager learners, and thank you for helping me to build my background knowledge as I continue to change grade level teaching assignments. Nerfighters!
Except they continue to increase their reliance on Russian natural gas. They just built a new pipeline and two more are in construction. Yet they still have blackouts because their solar grid isn't reliable enough.
I have to say, the ecology videos are much easier to understand than the biology ones. I've managed to watch and understand all of them in a day, rather than the weeks it took me to get through the biology ones.
So does this mean as the salts are dumped into the ocean (obviosuly some is used by plants/animals and some is stored in rocks) that as time goes on salinity levels of the ocean increase? Is there evidence that shows salinity changes over geologic time scales? Also if true, wouldn't that mean eventually life in the oceans is untenable?
Spazzy is right. Thanks to evolution, aquatic life can adapt to the salinity increase since the change is extremely slow. I don't have a evidence-based answer for your first question though... (its a really good question).
Not really, there are mineral sinks in the ocean, like the organisms making shells, that turn the salts into rock. So the ocean has been in somewhat of an equilibrium for millions of years.
Michael Dority I always thought the salinity of the ocean gradually increased with the age of the Earth. Could you tell me anything more about these mineral sinks?
@crashcourse ... my father is a retired meteorologist (worked for the Royal Canadian Meterological Society) ... and at around 3:00 you note that gravity is what causes the rain to fall ... but from what I understand and what he's told me before, most rain comes from the Bergeron Process (ice crystals forming then falling) rather than from direct coalescence. Just a point of clarification.
Hey Pedro, I would point out that momentum "p" is calculated as: p = m*V for anything that have mass. The reason why we say that photon have momentum it's because of the way we detect it. (historically, we looked at the energy of electrons that were kicked of plates by the photoelectric effect) So saying photons have "momentum" is more about describing the "effect" that photons have on matter then it is about describing the type of "energy" a photon have. If you get what am saying...
this is so interesting it ;) Keep it up :D advice: please slow down a bit ! the viewers need to take in what ur saying ! but no hard feelings ! i dont want people bashing me ! this is just advice ;) to improve
Oh Hank. Your love (or should it be hate) of climate change has spanned the past 5 years and keeps going at a steady pace on all of your channels. It's very invigorating to see someone who shares my same views. DFTBA!
I really appreciate this channel I’m not in a science course this year but I really wanted to keep learning as much as I could l. These videos really help out. :)
So, do I have to wait for this cousin of yours to grow up before Crash Course: Oceanography comes out? Well, I've waited 20+ years for the Final Fantasy 7 remake, I guess I can wait for this, too.
Totally right. I don't have the photosynthetic process clearly in mind. Of the 24 oxygens that come into the process (half from CO2, half from H2O), 6 wind up in glucose. It is, of course, immaterial which 6 those are, since the half from the air and the half from the ground are both needed to do the work, but I am curious.
This is very helpful. Very informative indeed. Learned a lot fr u in 10mins than on my highscool days.. like spent too much time fr one stuff to another! How I wish I could watch all your vids like within 24hrs lol but seriously! Thanks!
Have you and your brother ever considered an entire high school curriculum? Too late for me having graduated in 1992 but I know many students who, though very intelligent are not adapted to the high school ecosystem. I would have loved to have an option like this. Most homeschooling curriculum seems to be created by religious zealots and therefore does not address science very well.
Hi Hank. I came to this channel for John's history vids, but was trapped by the Biology/Ecology section pretty soon after, which is awesome. I found your videos to be truly informative and thought inspiring. I tried to show them at my Bio teacher, but she replied that you talked rather fast and our (non-first language English) colleagues wouldn't understand you. So I would like to ask you to speak somewhat slower or at least put up some subtittles on your videos. Thanks, mayorqw.
Global Warming is not really a good word for it, Climate Change expels some of the misconceptions. The earth is getting warmer but its getting colder too. Climate Change or "Global Warming" is the earths weather becoming extreme, bigger storms, serious droughts, colder winters and so on.

It winds up being about 50-50. While trace nutrients like minerals come from the ground, the bulk of mass coming from below is water. And the bulk of mass coming from above is carbon. HuffPo-style research (i.e. googling around) indicates that pretty close to half the mass of a block of trunk wood remains when you oven dry all the water out.

Which is only part of the picture, the glucose made from photosynthesis is made from water (from the ground) as well as carbon dioxide (from the air). So even if you dry out the wood, a sizeable proportion of it's dry mass still originates from the ground rather than the air.
I was referring to the natural buffer that occurs when the earth's temperature is raised. Actually a large population growth already provides a natural temperature change to begin with before factoring in unnatural events. So just that alone causes the natural buffer to kick in.
I don't know how true it is, but I have also heard there have been some sustainable alternative energy cars, or at least promising ideas, that have been bought out by the oil companies. Either way, I hope that one day we can use these alternative sources to lessen whatever impact we are having on the world. Thank you for enlightening me a little more on the possibility.
