Dude keep this up. I'm loving this. I'm 51 and just started to get really interested in science since high school. Your comedic, rapid, informative style is a winner!
Hank, I would just like to say that as an Ecologist I would like to say that your videos, although simplified immensely, is a great way to introduce people I know (who are not scientists) to my field. Also, it is an amazing tool when teaching, especially since I teach non-biology majors at a university. Thank you for your hard work and nicely done videos!!!!
Population Ecology: The Texas Mosquito Mystery - Crash Course Ecology #2 NOTES 1: What is Ecology? 1.1: Ecology zooms out on the Earth as opposed to individual bodies 1.2: Population ecology is the study of how groups within a species live within an area 1.3: Community ecology is the study of how different species live in an area 1.4: Ecosystem ecology is the study of how all things coexist within an ecosystem 2: Intro to Population Ecology 2.1: Focusing on the 2012 West Nile Virus outbreak in Dallas, there was more than a tenfold increase in cases of West Nile Virus between 2011 and 2012 2.1.1: This was the result of a population explosion of mosquitoes, carriers of West Nile Virus, in 2011 2.2: Population ecology explains the specifics of the outbreak, such as why it happened at that time and place 3: Fundamentals of Population Ecology 3.1: A population is a group of one species who interact regularly 3.2: Population density, or the size of the population in a given space, affects how often individuals come in contact with each other 3.3: Population density increases when individuals are born or immigrate to the area and decreases due to deaths and emigrations out of the region 3.4: Additionally, the dispersion of these individuals as it’s important to know how close they actually are as opposed to an average which assumes they are equally spaced out 3.5: Fecundity, or the number of offspring an individual can have in a lifetime, make a huge difference in population growth 3.5.1: Mosquitoes can have thousands of offspring in two weeks while other animals have them less common 4: Limiting Factors of Population Growth 4.1: Population can’t grow infinitely, and rarely even reaches a full potential 4.2: Limiting factors are deduced by finding what a species needs to survive and determining whether or not it exists in sufficient quantities for growth 4.3: In Dallas, there are a lot of options for mosquito food, and it is extremely warm, especially during a heatwave in the summer of 2012 and a relatively warm 2011-2012 winter 4.3.1: Additionally, mating options were plentiful and a drought allowed mosquitoes to lay eggs in static water 5: Density Dependent and Independent Factors 5.1: Dependent and Independent Factors affect a species’ carrying capacity, the number of individuals a habitat can sustain with its’ available resources 5.2: Density Dependent Factors are determined by a population’s density 5.2.1: A population may not have enough food, water, and space to accommodate everyone, or a predator population explodes, keeping the prey population in check 5.2.2: Population density also affects damage done by disease as a population living in close quarters is more likely to spread the disease 5.3: Density Independent Factors are unaffected by population density 5.3.1: Natural or man-made disasters can devastate populations regardless of size 5.3.2: Even minor weather events like an above-average number of thunderstorms or a slightly cooler winter may also damage a population if eggs are disturbed 5.4: There are so many different factors that could lead to a population reaching carrying capacity 6: Calculating Growth 6.1: Exponential growth is common in ecological situations as species grow by multiplication 6.1.1: It’s important to note that, while population increases rapidly, something will cause growth to stop and possibly reverse 6.2: Logistic growth occurs when a population grows when constrained by its habitat 6.2.1: Logistic growth often shows a population growing exponentially until reaching carrying capacity, then plateauing 6.3: To calculate growth, first subtract the number of deaths from the number of births (if there are more deaths than births, this will be negative). Then, divide this value by the initial size of the population 6.4: While this number may appear large, note the exponential nature of the growth
This is sooooo helpful for a review for exams or tests, i highly recommend everyone to watch crash course after studying a topic!! THANKS FOR HELPING ME GET A'S IN MY COURSES. Also, Physics crash course is seriously needed!! D;
Thank you so much for doing ecology. I feel that in school, unless you're really a hardcore biology major, they tend to focus on microbiology (which can be a lot of memorization and regurgitation as opposed to excitedly learning about life). Ecology is much more brain-friendly and allows us to think over not only the world, but our place in it.
Hank! I'm in an ecology class right now and we're talking about population ecology...you are a lot more entertaining and easier to understand than my professor. Thanks! :)
A lot of classmates in my school complain that this guy, and his brother talk too fast, but I think the pacing is perfect. Absolutely love these nerds.
Hank, you should do a crash course on biochemistry, taking on a wide variety of topics like inmunology, microbiology, physio-pathology, celular biology, food science, toxicology, and so on.
I'm studying environmental science and ecology at university right now, so this was a lovely reminder that yes, I do remember the fundamentals of ecology and yes, I am in the right program for me. So thanks!
I love that straight away you're into "BOOM - why the heck does anyone even care?", and actually giving an answer. Rather than the standard high-school answer of "BECAUSE EXAMS"
Was about time you included some math in Crash Course. A lot of the topics discussed in crash course have some distant mathematical connection, but this one was more direct. I wish for more!
This would have been helpful when studying for the test I took today. Oh well. You and your brother have successfully helped me get through (almost) the first semester of AP Biology and AP World history. Thank you SO much.
I actually really like the lack of math in most of the videos. I feel like it really helps to understand the overall concept as a story, and then the math makes more sense later because i know what the numbers mean. It would be cool if there was like a link to a math worksheet in the description or something though, but I feel like I remember it better when it's in story form. Anyway, thanks so much!

The ironic part about Chernobyl is that the lack of a human population in the restricted zone has actually counteracted the radiation in the area to the point that many species have flourished and some have even returned.
Hi Hank, just would like to throw in that there is also physiological ecology (dealing with individual organisms and how their physiology and their environment interact) and biosphere ecology (dealing with relationships between global-scale climates and the distribution of organisms)
if someone is a homie answer these questions for me thank you 1. Define population ecology. 2. Define population. 3. Discuss how the following factors affect population. a. I think it's fascinating how Hank (and Co.) make an awesome video with a lot of really interesting and easy understandable stuff and everyone plays Sherlock Holmes to find out if Hank is a backwards writing lefty or if they used a mirroring for that shot...
The fun thing with exponential curves is that they don't usually come with tops. Unless you factor in all the deaths by starvation, then you get an asymptote (bit where the curve stops going up) as human death by starvation matches population growth, and we reach our carrying capacity.
If Hank makes a video over Thanksgiving week, Crash Course Ecology will have caught up with my AP Environmental Science class, making test reviews so much easier!!
