    I just "Sold" my BMW, a 1999 323i sedan, to a contractor who was gouging me. One of his workers asked if I wanted to sell it and I looked him straight in the eyes and without hesitation said, "Why, yes, I do!" The contractor took my asking price off his bill.
    I bought it used in 2018 knowing it would require maintenance and repair, which it immediately and near constantly fulfilled that prediction while I taught my son to drive in it. I will always remember this car. When it was working, it was the nicest car I'd ever owned. Smooth, comfortable, quiet, and an absolute pleasure to drive, but never a month passed without something breaking and requiring expensive repairs. There was always a warning light on the dash letting me know of the next attack upon my wallet.
    If Hoovie says that 2001 was a Golden Year for BMWs then it may have been for the E46 3-series, but 1999 was the first year for the E46 and there were many parts for the 1999 model year that didn't make it to the 2000s. I bought many parts that worked on every model of E46 except the 1999 model year. All parts were rare and expensive. The simple repairs I performed in my driveway, but my mechanic soon dreaded my many return visits. The electronics were 20 years old and so were the mechanicals, both were at EOL and it had become a money pit. The final straw was when the Xenon headlamp amplifier failed and burned out the bulb. I replaced the ridiculously expensive bulb and still no headlight. Car couldn't be driven at night and the amplifier was part of an $1100 replacement headlight assembly. Should I replace it and then find out the failure was somewhere else in the CAN bus system? That's when I decided to sell the car. I was glad to get rid of it and remove it from my driveway and my insurance policy.

    In the late 1990s when I was in high school BMWs were absolutely rolling status symbols; everyone wanted one and they made something excellent in every category. I’ve seen enough videos & heard enough stories that I doubt I would ever buy a BMW newer than about 2001 unless it was brand new & under warranty. The reliability & depreciation just make them a no-go. Now, something from the 1980s & 1990s is a different story.

Advance wanted $110 for a dorman brand, and my parents and I worked on it ourselves.

I would agree more if it was an old Corolla or something that really could be driven by those less well off, trying to make do.

      Or at least swap bell housing from smg,

    • @mrflippant
      @mrflippant ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's doable on the E46 M3 SMG, but in that case you still have to get a new hole cut and tapped to install the different reverse-gear sensor. Apparently the later SMG transmissions are substantially less amenable to the conversion to the point where it would cost WAY more to make the modifications than to just replace with one that has always been manual.

    • @stamboer99
      @stamboer99 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That’s because the smg trans is shared with the manual on e46 m3. Smg 3 is a 7 speed on the e60/e63 cars not a 6 speed, so it’s not something you can just remove the hydraulic system on and have a manual car. Needs a full trans swap.

    Don't what happened, I had a 1995 740i that went 300K miles before I sold it to a mechanic. The engine and transmission were still solid and QUIET on that car. It had a better stereo system than I had in my house. It just kept getting little electrical issues that I would figure out and get some parts from RockAuto and be on my way. I was moving across country and didn't want to spend 3K to move that tank and sold it to my Eurotrash mechanic.

Next time you plan to buy a BMW or some other car that is going to cause you heartache, how about you buy me a fun car for say $5000 so I can have something cool. I've lost count the number of times I've chopped up bell housings swapping around to make things fit, often for manual conversions for configurations that never had a manual option. I'm assuming there's a lot more involved here than just finding a dead transmission, chopping the incorrect bell housing, and then welding the working one from said paperweight? That might be impossible, I'm ignorant of the new stuff. I've had more than a few E36's in the past and have an E31 now, but nothing newer than the 90s and even the E31 has a Toyota 1UZ V8 supercharged instead of a BMW engine (most reliable BMW I've owned). I had to make the BMW transmission work with the 1UZ through some creative solutions in my machine shop.
