Antoine's Very First Seal Rescue August 2019

- Naudé and Antoine met in August last year at the local Crossfit gym. It was clear they were likeminded and Naude invited him and Alba (another Sea Shepherd crew member) out on patrol at Pelican Point.
This video is a highlight of their first rescues together. It was immediately clear Antoine was 100% committed and really handy to have out there.
They missed the first big seal, but managed to catch and disentangle 3 more that afternoon.
It was after this that Antoine decided to come back and visit Namibia for some more rescues in February this year. He was supposed to come for 10 days, but due to Covid-19 lockdowns stayed for 6 months, and together with Naude they freed nearly 500 seals in that time! 🦭

My son love how Antoine pets the seals to calm them down. Its nice to see how they got started.

So from his very first seal he was talking to them? I used to work in a forensic service for adults with learning difficulties. My boss at the time was a world leader in the field. He used to say you can have a dozen people apply for a job with him, eleven could have lots of qualifications but the twelfth has no qualifications but an unquantifiable 'it'. The person who had that 'it' would always get the job if it was up to him. The rest you can teach, you can teach values but not that 'it'. Antoine has that 'it' with wildlife as does Naudé and Denzil.
Your videos have become a highlight of my day. There's a small group of people in a country many thousands of miles away, that I know little about and can’t visit. As the world gets crazier and crazier and is going into meltdown, they are just trying to do the right thing because it needs doing. A beacon of hope for this messed up planet. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

"It" is the ability to read animals. Half the problems you get with wild animal interactions/ biting pets etc can be solved if the ppl involved could understand the animals body language

I love the way Antoine talks to the seals and reassures them that they are ok. One sentient being to another.
The last one gasped and writhed in pain a lot, but then got calm and stayed for a moment. Her/His relief must have been enormous. I hope she/he is having a wonderful life now.
I kinda sensed that too. And then she either acknowledged their help or was perplexed by the kindness of human strangers. Yeah, projecting a lot but who knows? We don't understand their language and so we don't know their level of awareness and intelligence.

I love that you showed how Tony got started with Naude doing seal rescues. I loved that someone called him "the seal whisperer". That's perfect. It was too bad that the big male got away. I loved that little female at the end who was in so much pain from that damn fishing line. I think it was so sweet and wonderful that she stayed around for a couple minutes to thank you guys for helping her. You guys have had a great history together of saving all our furry puppies. 😊

Awe that last pup stuck around to say thank you. There is no bigger compliment then an animal being released and sticking around to show you they are completely comfortable and no longer scared of being close to you. She gave you the beautiful stance and swayed her head back and fourth to show you her gratitude. Gorgeous. Just gorgeous. What a first day of two hero’s coming together.
Antoine is a gentle soul. He is the seal whisperer of them all. Kudos to Naude and everyone for their untiring crusade to save the seals.

I don’t know what he’s doing now, or if he’s still with you guys doing other work, but he was always a treat to watch. Runs like the wind, captures with aplomb and great care, and always petting and soothing the seal. Best to him!

Despite the wounds, the third seal was dexterous enough to slip out of the hands of both Naude and Antoine in first time! And then she looked so calmly at her rescuers. Any heart would melt from this! Antoine is a great part of the team. From the first minutes he was so brave and kind to animals.
Things have improvised for good..you guys have come a long way..kudos.. 🤟
Back then Antoine himself was a 'pups' when it came to rescue. He has 'grown' so much in experience since then. :)

The two most surprising parts to me:
1) from only just having seen this after watching countless other rescues, I would have bet (and lost) huge sums of money that these two were lifelong friends, instead learning they first met in 2019
2) from day one Tony is a natural born seal whisperer.

I've always loved the way Antoine talks his rescues. It touches my heart to hear him comfort and encourage his "puppies" like they were his own kids. You can really hear the sincerity and love in his voice. And also the compassion in every calming stroke & rub he gives them.
My fully respect for the great job you do for this animals. And from the beginning the technik how to use the net and catch the seal was brilliant.
