Three seals Rescued in Cape Cross Parking Lot

  • In this rescue, the OCN team came across 2 entangled seal pups right next to the walkway and parking lot of Cape Cross, one of the largest seal colonies in the world. They prioritised the first one, and went after after him with their specially built net. They were hoping that while they were busy, Likius would keep an eye out on the second one.
As soon as they were done with number 1, they took a little while to spot the second one. As they started running for him, Denzil noticed a third and went of to grab him, while Naude and Francois attended number 2.
Once done with number 2, they could help the third one who had a particularly bad cut around his neck and chest. All three of these pups were entangled in discarded recreational fishing line. Sadly right now there is no viable alternative to this type of fishing line.... 🦭

I lost my dad yesterday. He taught my brother, sister, and myself how to love nature. He taught us that we were also part of nature and that we had to be the caretakers of it. He told us it was an obligation we had because we were on the top of the chart. I so wanted to show him your TH-cam channel but I couldn't get it in the hospital. He loved watching people studying & discovering new aspects to life here on the 3rd Rock. He loved watching the NOAA ship Okeanos and their mission to find new life.... Evidently, I've learned to love nature like he did. Thank you for your work.

Steven Horne: 💐 If you ever want to show a video outside of wifi range, ask a friend or relative or someone to play it on their digital device, or you play it on your computer screen AND use your smartphone camera video function to make 1 temporary copy. Then after you have shown it you can delete it. That serves the same function as using the 'Share' capacity to send it to someone. They still get the distribution credit.
You would have thought of that except your grief was in control.
Rest assured that your father was aware that there really are good conservationists in the world. He knew in general if not specifically.
You might appreciate watching the TED Talk 'How to Green the World's Deserts' in his honor. It is 19 minutes. Africa asserts that it has found the solution to global warming. That video explains.
Your father probably would have appreciated that one, also.
You now represent his values in the world. May you live long and thrive and magnify his values in the world.💐

The first one turned out to be a complicated operation! It is so horrible that those thin lines can cut such deep wounds, like with the second and third pups. The seals don't seem as frightened and wary of humans in this area, perhaps because people are often strolling upon the boardwalk…? A GREAT day's work for you heroes!

I have made sure that EVERYONE I KNOW who goes to the beach, fishes or owns a boat sees what it is you guys are doing. Many have said they had no idea that such a small piece of line could spell certain death for a seal. They have all promised to be more careful with all types of line, tape, plastics etc. around the water. Everyone can help to get the word out!

The worst part is that fishermen hate seals...or any sea life that the ppl think of as 'stealing' fish from them.
In Oregon (USA) they passed a law to be able to shoot seals.
These are people making money by emptying the oceans of food, even to the extent of breaking the link of the food chain in the ocean.
I live in a town off the Strait of Juan de Fuca in the state of Washington.
When I moved here in 2003 there was a resident harbor seal, and several cormorants.
      They have all disappeared.
There is an orca pod that is indigenous to my area...the pod has been reduced to the point where they will not recover.
When the last of them dies it will be the end of our pod.
Recently I saw a video where Orca became aggressive toward a boat.
Very unusual behavior and as they starve we will have more of it.

@@Livefreeordie-182 - OMG, that is terrible! That is like shooting the lady in front of you at the store to make sure there is enough food for you! Sadly, many of the animal disappearances are due to food chains being destroyed by Fukushima Radioactivity as well as human stupidity. @@rblibityes...Fukushima devastated the ocean life.
      You know what I noticed?
Tuna travel very far and very fast so they get the highest levels of ocean contaminates and fukushima detritus.
A few years after fukushima three new canned catfood manufacturers came out...all with tuna based canned food for cats.
      That's all they make.
Not a natural food for cats (fish inhibits thiamin absorption in cats) and seems to me like tuna must've gotten cheaper so it's like they're disposing of toxic waste by putting in cat food...and making money doing it.
Yeah I dont watch mainstream news anymore.
      It's an insult to intelligence.

@@OceanConservationNamibia I don't even understand HOW can see the thin line around them from a distance! Especially when it's a sea of seals. I only just started watching these vids the day before yesterday and I'm seriously committed! I love that you do this, but it's so sad that it seems like a full time gig. I wonder how often that this needs to be done. Every day? Once a week? It seems endless. The things you find.. shirts, bandages, packaging tape, soccer net - shocking and so sad. Now with covid the plastic waste is so excessive it breaks my heart. Thanks to these individuals for making a difference.

I wonder also if there are "danger" signals we as humans don't perceive but at this location the general threat level is low so the triggers are not there. I never could quite understand why I found normal bird song calming then realised one day, it could be because it's the rest of nature (with a good vantage point) saying "no obvious threats, get on with life".

It's ironic that the natural curiosity of these marine animals makes them one of natures unwitting vacuum cleaners, albeit at some cost to themselves. Not sure that the guys at Ocean Conservation would like to be regarded as the dustmen though! ;-) Never tire of watching these amazing rescues. Many thanks to you all.

You definitely should replace that zipper on the net, and when you do, you need a heavier one. A heavier-duty zipper will both, unzip, and zip up, more freely. Your job will be easier. A sailmaker would be able to handle that kind of work. Heavy duty marine grade or military grade zippers are widely available. This is not expensive. You should have a zipper that works reliably, in situations which require it to operate more smoothly than what you have now. Your closest, local, marina should be able to refer you to a sailmaker, who will be able to remove the old zipper and sew on a new one, as well, he may be able to repair the rents in your netting (if you want that). Hope this helps!!
    Thanks for the great content.
    Keep up the good work.
